It is well known that during alloy solidification, convection currents close to the so-lidification front have an influence on the structure of dendrites, the local solute concentration, the pattern of solid segregation, and eventually the microstructure of the casting and hence its mechanical properties. Controlled stirring of the melt in continuous casting or in ingot solidification is thought to have a beneficial effect. Free convection currents occur naturally due to temperature differences in the melt and for any given configuration, their strength is a function of the degree of superheat present. A more controlled forced convection current can be induced using electro-magnetic stirring. The authors have applied their Control-Volume based MHD method [1, 2] to the problem of tin solidification in an annular crucible with a water-cooled inner wall and a resistance heated outer one, for both free and forced convection situations and for various degrees of superheat. This problem was studied experimentally by Vives and Perry [3] who obtained temperature measurements, front positions and maps of electro-magnetic body force for a range of superheat values. The results of the mathematical model are compared critically against the experimental ones, in order to validate the model and also to demonstrate the usefulness of the coupled solution technique followed, as a predictive tool and a design aid. A novel multi-scale seamless model of brittle-crack propagation is proposed and applied to the simulation of fracture growth in a two-dimensional Ag plate with macroscopic dimensions. The model represents the crack propagation at the macroscopic scale as the drift-diffusion motion of the crack tip alone. The diffusive motion is associated with the crack-tip coordinates in the position space, and reflects the oscillations observed in the crack velocity following its critical value. The model couples the crack dynamics at the macroscales and nanoscales via an intermediate mesoscale continuum. The finite-element method is employed to make the transition from the macroscale to the nanoscale by computing the continuum-based displacements of the atoms at the boundary of an atomic lattice embedded within the plate and surrounding the tip. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation then drives the crack tip forward, producing the tip critical velocity and its diffusion constant. These are then used in the Ito stochastic calculus to make the reverse transition from the nanoscale back to the macroscale. The MD-level modelling is based on the use of a many-body potential. The model successfully reproduces the crack-velocity oscillations, roughening transitions of the crack surfaces, as well as the macroscopic crack trajectory. The implications for a 3-D modelling are discussed.

Molecular dynamics has been employed to model the fracture of a twodimensional triangular atomic lattice. The N-body Sutton-Chen potential developed for fcc metals and its extended version (Rafii-Tabar and Sutton) for fcc random binary alloys were used for the interatomic interactions. It is shown that at low temperatures cleavage fractures can occur in both an elemental metal and an alloy. At elevated temperatures the nucleation of dislocations is shown to cause a brittle-to-ductile transition. For the brittle crack propagation in the elemental metal, crack propagation speeds have been computed for different stress rates, and a crack instability found to exist as the speed reaches a critical value of about 32% of the Rayleigh wave speed. For the random alloy, we find that the dislocation movement can be affected by the distorted lattice.

There has been a recent revival of interest in the register insertion (RI) protocol because of its high throughput and low delay characteristics. Several variants of the protocol have been investigated with a view to integrating voice and data applications on a single local area network (LAN). In this paper the performance of an RI ring with a variable size buffer is studied by modelling and simulation. The chief advantage of the proposed scheme is that an efficient but simple bandwidth allocation scheme is easily incorporated. Approximate formulas are derived for queue lengths, queueing times, and total end-to-end transfer delays. The results are compared with previous analyses and with simulation estimates. The effectiveness of the proposed protocol in ensuring fairness of access under conditions of heavy and unequal loading is investigated.

The performance of the register insertion protocol for mixed voice-data traffic is investigated by simulation. The simulation model incorporates a common insertion buffer for station and ring packets. Bandwidth allocation is achieved by imposing a queue limit at each node. A simple priority scheme is introduced by allowing the queue limit to vary from node to node. This enables voice traffic to be given priority over data. The effect on performance of various operational and design parameters such as ratio of voice to data traffic, queue limit and voice packet size is investigated. Comparisons are made where possible with related work on other protocols proposed for voice-data integration. The main conclusions are: (a) there is a general degradation of performance as the ratio of voice traffic to data traffic increases, (b) substantial improvement in performance can be achieved by restricting the queue length at data nodes and (c) for a given ring utilisation, smaller voice packets result in lower delays for both voice and data traffic.

This paper presents a reified temporal logic for representing and reasoning about temporal and non-temporal relationships between non-temporal assertions. A clear syntax and semantics for the logic is formally provided. Three types of predicates, temporal predicates, non-temporal predicates and meta-predicates, are introduced. Terms of the proposed language are partitioned into three types, temporal terms, non-temporal terms and propositional terms. Reified propositions consist of formulae with each predicate being either a temporal predicate or a meta-predicate. Meta-predicates may take both temporal terms and propositional terms together as arguments or take propositional terms alone. A standard formula of the classical first-order language with each predicate being a non-temporal predicate taking only non-temporal terms as arguments is reified as just a propositional term. A general time ontology has been provided which can be specialized to a variety of existing temporal systems. The new logic allows one to predicate and quantify over propositional terms while according a special status of time; for example, assertions such as ‘effects cannot precede their causes’ is ensured in the logic, and some problematic temporal aspects including the delay time between events and their effects can be conveniently expressed. Applications of the logic are presented including the characterization of the negation of properties and their contextual sentences, and the expression of temporal relations between actions and effects.

In this paper, a knowledge-based approach is proposed for the management of temporal information in process control. A common-sense theory of temporal constraints over processes/events, allowing relative temporal knowledge, is employed here as the temporal basis for the system. This theory supports duration reasoning and consistency checking, and accepts relative temporal knowledge which is in a form normally used by human operators. An architecture for process control is proposed which centres on an historical database consisting of events and processes, together with the qualitative temporal relationships between their occurrences. The dynamics of the system is expressed by means of three types of rule: database updating rules, process control rules, and data deletion rules. An example is provided in the form of a life scheduler, to illustrate the database and the rule sets. The example demonstrates the transitions of the database over time, and identifies the procedure in terms of a state transition model for the application. The dividing instant problem for logical inference is discussed with reference to this process control example, and it is shown how the temporal theory employed can be used to deal with the problem.

A general system is presented in this paper which supports the expression of relative temporal knowledge in process control and management. This system allows knowledge of Allen's temporal relations over time elements, which may be both intervals and points. The objectives and characteristics of two major temporal attributes, i.e. ‘transaction time’ and ‘valid time’, are described. A graphical representation for the temporal network is presented, and inference over the network may be made by means of a consistency checker in terms of the graphical representation. An illustrative example of the system as applied to process control and management is provided.

The conception of the FUELCON architecture, of a composite tool for the generation and validation of patterns for assigning fuel assemblies to the positions in the grid of a reactor core section, has undergone an evolution throughout the history of the project. Different options for various subtask were possible, envisioned, or actually explored or adopted. We project these successive, or even concomitant configurations of the architecture, into a meta-architecture, which quite not by chance happens to reflect basic choices in the field's history over the last decade.

This paper introduces a few architectural concepts from FUELGEN, that generates a "cloud" of reload patterns, like the generator in the FUELCON expert system, but unlike that generator, is based on a genetic algorithm. There are indications FUELGEN may outperform FUELCON and other tools as reported in the literature, in well-researched case studies, but careful comparisons have to be carried out. This paper complements the information in two other recent papers on FUELGEN. Moreover, a sequel project is outlined.

We continue the discussion of the decision points in the FUELCON metaarchitecture. Having discussed the relation of the original expert system to its sequel projects in terms of an AND/OR tree, we consider one further domain for a neural component: parameter prediction downstream of the core reload candidate pattern generator, thus, a replacement for the NOXER simulator currently in use in the project.

The paper describes the design of an efficient and robust genetic algorithm for the nuclear fuel loading problem (i.e., refuellings: the in-core fuel management problem) - a complex combinatorial, multimodal optimisation., Evolutionary computation as performed by FUELGEN replaces heuristic search of the kind performed by the FUELCON expert system (CAI 12/4), to solve the same problem. In contrast to the traditional genetic algorithm which makes strong requirements on the representation used and its parameter setting in order to be efficient, the results of recent research results on new, robust genetic algorithms show that representations unsuitable for the traditional genetic algorithm can still be used to good effect with little parameter adjustment. The representation presented here is a simple symbolic one with no linkage attributes, making the genetic algorithm particularly easy to apply to fuel loading problems with differing core structures and assembly inventories. A nonlinear fitness function has been constructed to direct the search efficiently in the presence of the many local optima that result from the constraint on solutions.

In many practical situations, batching of similar jobs to avoid setups is performed while constructing a schedule. This paper addresses the problem of non-preemptively scheduling independent jobs in a two-machine flow shop with the objective of minimizing the makespan. Jobs are grouped into batches. A sequence independent batch setup time on each machine is required before the first job is processed, and when a machine switches from processing a job in some batch to a job of another batch. Besides its practical interest, this problem is a direct generalization of the classical two-machine flow shop problem with no grouping of jobs, which can be solved optimally by Johnson's well-known algorithm. The problem under investigation is known to be NP-hard. We propose two O(n logn) time heuristic algorithms. The first heuristic, which creates a schedule with minimum total setup time by forcing all jobs in the same batch to be sequenced in adjacent positions, has a worst-case performance ratio of 3/2. By allowing each batch to be split into at most two sub-batches, a second heuristic is developed which has an improved worst-case performance ratio of 4/3. © 1998 The Mathematical Programming Society, Inc. A nested heuristic approach that uses route length approximation is proposed to solve the location-routing problem. A new estimation formula for route length approximation is also developed. The heuristic is evaluated empirically against the sequential method and a recently developed nested method for location routing problems. This testing is carried out on a set of problems of 400 customers and around 15 to 25 depots with good results.
