The electrocatalytic oxidation of hydrazine (N2H4) on a glassy carbon electrode (GC) modified by monolayer and polymer films of cobalt protoporphyrin dimethyl ester (CoPP) has been studied. Both the monolayer and polymer films of CoPP are very active to the anodic oxidation of N2H4. The activity of CoPP for the anodic oxidation of N2H4 is dependent on the pH of the solution, and the thickness of polymerized CoPP film. The oxidation kinetics were examined by methods of cyclic voltammetry, rotating disc electrodes and steady-state polarization measurement.

A copper-based chemically-modified electrode has been constructed and characterized by various experimental parameters in flow-through amperometric detection of carboxylic acids and phenolic acids. Novel hydrodynamic voltamperograms were first obtained in flow-through amperometric detection with the Cu-based CME and subsequently negative and positive peaks were observed in a single chromatogram. This unique and flexible potential dependence could be of great benefit in chromatographic speciation and quantification. These observations suggest that the detector response was governed by the complexation reaction of copper ions with the solutes.

The solid state complexes of trivalent lanthanid, yttrium and scandium with cyclohexane carboxylic acid have been isolated and characterized by IR and Raman spectroscopy. It was found that there are only chelated carboxylate groups in the scandium complex and that there are the chelated, bridged and chelate-bridged carboxylate groups in other rare earth complexes. Among marine bacteria isolated from the cytotoxic sponge Hymeniacidon perleve, one strain NJ6-3-1 classified as Pseudomonas sp. showed both cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities. Fatty acid analysis indicated that the bacterial strain consists mainly of C16:1, C16:0, C18:1, C18:0, C15:0, C14:0. One unusual 9,10-cyclopropane-C17:0 fatty acid and C26:0 also constitute major components, as well as the existence of squalene, the precursor of triterpenoids. The major metabolites in the culture broth were identified as alkaloids, including diketopiperazines and indole compounds, namely 3,6-diisopropylpiperazine-2,5-dione, 3-benzyl-3-isopropylpiperazine-2,5-dione, 3,6-bis-(2-methylpropyl)-piperazine-2,5-dione, indole-3-carboxaldehyde, indole-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester, indole-3-ethanol, and quinazoline-2,4-dione.

Nine novel triazole compounds containing ester group were designed and synthesized. Their structures were confirmed by elemental, H-1 NMR and IR analyses, and optimized by means of DFT (Density Functional Theory) method at the B3LYP/6-31G* level. Based on the quantum-chemical calculation results and the Pearson coefficients between FA and quantumchemical parameters, V, LogP, MR and E-HOMO are shown to be the important relative factors which affect FA of the title compounds.

This paper describes the simultaneous determination of allantoin, quercetin, and 1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-beta-carboline-3-carboxylic acid (MTCCA) in Nitraria tangutorum Bobr seed by HPLC-APCI-MS and CE (capillary electrophoresis) methods. The final optimized chromatographic conditions were investigated in a reversed-phase Eclipse XDB-C8 column (150 x 4.6 mm, 5 mu m). A seventeen-minute gradient elution, (A: aqueous acetonitrile 20% (v/v); B: aqueous acetonitrile 60% (v/v); C: pure acetonitrile 100%) at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min was selected for the separation of three natural products with diode array detection (DAD) at 220 nm. A CE experiment was carried out in a fused silica capillary with 32 mmol/L boric acid (pH 10), 32 mmol/L SDS and acetonitrile (10.0%, v/v). The applied potential and temperature was, respectively, set at 19 kV and 25 degrees C. After development, the validation was performed in parallel for HPLC and CE, with the same standards and sample to avoid differences due to the manipulation. The validation parameters of both techniques were adequate for the intended purpose.

A two-week multi-step experiment that introduces students to mechanistic organic chemistry and substituent effects. A simple preparation of differentially substituted para-nitrophenyl benzoates is followed by ester hydrolysis with monitoring by UV-Vis spectroscopy to provide rate data for the reaction.
