Magnesium/calcium data from Southern Ocean planktonic foraminifera demonstrate that high-latitude (~55°S) southwest Pacific sea surface temperatures (SSTs) cooled 6° to 7°C during the middle Miocene climate transition (14.2 to 13.8 million years ago). Stepwise surface cooling is paced by eccentricity forcing and precedes Antarctic cryosphere expansion by ~60 thousand years, suggesting the involvement of additional feedbacks during this interval of inferred low-atmospheric partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2). Comparing SSTs and global carbon cycling proxies challenges the notion that episodic pCO2 drawdown drove this major Cenozoic climate transition. SST, salinity, and ice-volume trends suggest instead that orbitally paced ocean circulation changes altered meridional heat/vapor transport, triggering ice growth and global cooling.

The late Quaternary sequence off eastern South Island, New Zealand, consists of ~100 m of alternating bluish gray pelagic oozes and greenish gray hemipelagic oozes that extend uninterruptedly back to the Brunhes/Matuyama boundary (0.73 m.y.). A very high resolution (~2400 yr.) record of sediment texture, calcium carbonate content, and planktonic and benthic foraminiferal oxygen and carbon isotope composition demonstrates an in-phase cyclical fluctuation between the sedimentary parameters that closely correspond to the pelagic-hemipelagic sedimentation cycles and the isotope composition. Pelagic oozes, formed during interglacial periods of high eustatic sea level, are characterized by calcareous microfossils, relative enrichment in sand and clay sizes, high carbonate contents, reduced delta18O values, and increased delta13C values. Hemipelagic oozes, associated with glacial episodes and lowered eustatic sea level, include common terrigenous material and siliceous microfossils, are enriched in silt sizes, have low carbonate contents, high delta18O values, and low delta13C values. The history of alpine glaciations and associated erosion of the South Island of New Zealand, as expressed by the appearance of hemipelagic oozes, can be correlated directly with the major fluctuations of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets as expressed by the influence of eustatic sea-level changes on the oxygen isotope composition of both planktonic and benthic foraminifers. This high-accumulation-rate record contains conspicuous intervals of highfrequency, high-amplitude isotope variability including the presence of multiple glacial/interglacial intervals within single isotope stages, and offers one of the best sections cored to date for detailed study of the evolution and history of climate change over the last 0.75 m.y.

In situ measurements of Mg/Ca, Zn/Ca, Mn/Ca, and Ba/Ca in Globigerinoides bulloides and Globigerina ruber from southwest Pacific core top sites and plankton tow are reported and their potential as paleoproxies is explored. The modern samples cover 20° of latitude from 34°S to 54°S, 7-19°C water temperature, and variable influence of subantarctic (SAW) and subtropical (STW) surface waters. Trace element signatures recorded in core top and plankton tow planktic foraminifera are examined in the context of the chemistry and nutrient profiles of their modern water masses. Our observations suggest that Zn/Ca and Mn/Ca may have the potential to trace SAW and STW. Intraspecies and interspecies offsets identified by in situ measurements of Mg/Ca and Zn/Ca indicate that these ratios may also record changes in thermal and nutrient stratification in the upper ocean. We apply these potential proxies to fossilized foraminifera from the high-resolution core MD97 2121. At the Last Glacial Maximum, surface water Mg/Ca temperature estimates indicate that temperatures were approximately 6-7°C lower than those of the present, accompanied by low levels of Mn/Ca and Zn/Ca and minimal thermal and nutrient stratification. This is consistent with regional dominance of SAW and reduced STW inflow associated with a reduced South Pacific Gyre (SPG). Upper ocean thermal and nutrient stratification collapsed during the Antarctic Cold Reversal, before poleward migration of the zonal winds and ocean fronts invigorated the SPG and increased STW inflow in the early Holocene. Together with reduced winds, this favored a stratified upper ocean from circa 10 ka to the present.

Abundance of picophytoplankton in the Subantarctic and subtropical frontal zones was found to be 10**6-10**7 cells/l. Biomass of eucaryotes and procaryotes reached 2 g/m**2 and accounted for 1-15% of total phytoplankton biomass. A deep peak in the distribution of phytoplankton abundance was found at 40-120 m. Maximum number of dividing cyanobacteria cells occurred at depths of 40-60 m. An estimate of picophytoplankton production shows that picophytoplankton accounts for 30-40% of total primary production.

A collection of dredge samples from the Hunter Fracture Zone includes holocrystalline massive and cumulose basic and ultrabasic rocks and volcanites of the ophiolite complex: from basalts to rhyolites. The ultrabasic rocks are largely serpentinized harzburgites and lherzolites; their relict mineralogy is typical of peridotite considered to be the refractory residue of partial melting of the mantle. Cumulate textured ultramafic rocks probably are related to the cumulate gabbro and granodiorite rather than to the residual mantle material. The gabbroic rocks are dominantly cumulate textured Pl-Opx-Cpx±Ol gabbronorite and Pl-Cpx±Ol gabbros; the mineral features of these rocks are the result of their crystallization at moderate pressure (in a moderate level magma chamber). The massive Pl-Cpx±Ol gabbros are less common. Green and brown-green Ca-amphibole has partially or totally replaced the clinopyroxene in many samples. There is an overlap in mineral chemistry between the cumulate rocks and the Opx-Cpx-Pl volcanic rocks and boninites. It is interpreted as an indication that the cumulate rocks were co-genetic with Opx-Cpx-Pl volcanic rocks and that they both constitute remnants of an island arc volcanic-plutonic series. The petrologic evidence indicates that ophiolite gabbroic rocks were derived from an island-arc rather than from a mid-ocean ridge.

Ration of mass species of infusoria and their consumption of phytoplankton in the 0-200 m layer of antarctic and subantarctic waters of the Pacific Ocean are evaluated from microscopic study of digestive vacuoles and counts of algae present in them. In antarctic waters tintinnids, which make up 63-75% of total biomass of infusoria, consumed 19-27% of biomass of nannophytoplankton or 0.1-0.3% of biomass of all phytoplankton. In Subantarctic the main infusorial consumers of phytoplankton were large strombidia, which were dominant in infusorial biomass and in their areas of maximum development consumed 14% of biomass of nannophytoplankton, equivalent to about 10% of total biomass of phytoplankton in the 0-200 m layer.

Ebridians and actiniscidians are described from Sites 588, 591, and 594 in the southwest Pacific. The middle Miocene to early Pliocene interval at Site 591 can be subdivided into five ebridian-actiniscidian zones. These are correlated to standard nannoplankton zones. Five new species are described from the Neogene of the southwest Pacific: Ammodochium serotinum, Hermesinum obliquum, Actiniscus flosculus, A. laciniatus, and A squamosus.
