We review our recent progress on the study of new nonlinear mechanisms of pulse shaping in passively mode-locked fiber lasers. These include a mode-locking regime featuring pulses with a triangular distribution of the intensity, and spectral compression arising from nonlinear pulse propagation. We also report on our recent experimental studies unveiling new types of vector solitons with processing states of polarization for multi-pulse and tightly bound-state soliton (soliton molecule) operations in a carbon nanotube (CNT) mode-locked fiber laser with anomalous dispersion cavity. © 2014 World Scientific Publishing Company.

We overview our recent results on polarisation dynamics of vector solitons in erbium doped fibre laser mode locked with carbon nanotubes. Our experimental and theoretical study revealed new families of vector solitons for fundamental and bound-state soliton operations. The observed scenario of the evolution of the states of polarisation (SOPs) on the Poincare sphere includes fast polarisation switching between two and three SOPs along with slow SOP evolution on a double scroll chaotic attractor. The underlying physics presents an interplay between effects of birefringence of the laser cavity and light induced anisotropy caused by polarisation hole burning. © 2014 IEEE.

For a fibre Raman amplifier with randomly varying birefringence, we provide insight on the validity of previously explored multi-scale techniques leading to polarisation pulling of the signal state of polarisation to the pump state of polarisation. Unlike previous study, we demonstrate that in addition to polarisation pulling a new random birefringence-mediated phenomenon that goes beyond existing multi-scale techniques can boost resonance-like gain fluctuations similar to the Stochastic Anti-Resonance. For mode locked fibre lasers we report on fast and slow polarisation dynamics of fundamental, bound state, and multipulsing vector solitons along with stretched pulses. We demonstrate that tuning cavity anisotropy and birefringence along with parameters of an injected signal with randomly varying state of polarisation provides access to the variety of vector waveforms previously unexplored.

Modern comprehensive high schools do not formally track students into different programs, but schools offer different curricular sequences with important and stratified consequences for students' post-secondary education. This study used qualitative methodology to examine how schools' organizational cultures influence the maintenance of tracking practices in four comprehensive high schools in Miami. The methodology included long-term participant observation in each of the four schools, unstructured and semi-structured interviews and the collection of written documents produced by the district. A framework based on the concepts of environment, mission, information, strategy, and leadership was used to analyze the data. ^ It was found that school cultures shared deeply held beliefs that regard ability as a fixed trait. This prevented schools from providing access to information about the consequences of course selection to the majority of the student body, with the exception of those students defined as “college bound.” State and County level policies that reward achievement in standardized tests combined with school overcrowding, resulted in organizational cultures that favored the adoption of strategies stressing efficiency, as opposed to a challenging education for all students. Only one of the four schools in the study had a policy requiring students to attempt courses that were more challenging. The practice was resented by both teachers and counselors, since it was perceived as interfering with other goals of the institution, i.e.: graduating students in four years. ^ The culture of the schools stressed college as the only legitimate post-secondary option; consequently, the majority of counselors did not encourage students—even those already defined as “not college material”—to consider other alternatives, such as vocational education. The elimination of formal tracks in these comprehensive high schools resulted in the school culture lacking a clear mission in regards to non-college bound students. Findings are discussed in relation to current theoretical explanations for educational policy and equality of opportunity. ^

Following up on earlier work on the $q\bar{q}$-bound-state problem using a covariant, chiral-symmetric formalism based upon the Covariant Spectator Theory, we study the heavy–light case for both pseudoscalar and vector mesons. Derived directly in Minkowski space, our approach approximates the full Bethe–Salpeter-equation, taking into account, effectively, the contributions of both ladder and crossed ladder diagrams in the kernel. Results for several mass spectra using a relativistic covariant generalization of a Cornell plus a constant potential to model the interquark interaction are given and discussed.

The properties of the ground state of N anyons in an external magnetic field and a harmonic oscillator potential are computed in the large-N limit using the Thomas-Fermi approximation. The number of level crossings in the ground state as a function of the harmonic frequency, the strength and the direction of the magnetic field and N are also studied.

We discuss the q-state Potts models for q less than or equal to 4, in the scaling regimes close to their critical or tricritical points. Starting from the kink S-matrix elements proposed by Chim and Zamolodchikov, the bootstrap is closed for the scaling regions of all critical points, and for the tricritical points when 4 > q greater than or equal to 2. We also note a curious appearance of the extended last line of Freudenthal's magic square in connection with the Potts models. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

A scale-independent approach, valid for weakly bound three-body systems, is used to analyze the existence of excited Thomas-Efimov states in molecular systems with three atoms: a helium dimer together with isotopes of lithium (Li-6 and Li-7) and sodium (Na-23). With the present study and the available data, we can clearly predict that the He-4(2)-Li-7 system supports an excited state with binding energy close to 2.31 mK. We propose a novel mathematical approach for the calculation of near-zero energy states by solving potentials which are isospectral with the original one. For any potential, families of strictly isospectral potentials (with very different shape) having desirable and adjustable features are generated by supersymmetric isospectral formalism. The near-zero energy Efimov state in the original potential is effectively trapped in the deep well of the isospectral family and facilitates more accurate calculation of the Efimov state. Application to the first excited state in He-4 trimer is presented.

The vitamin K-dependent γ-glutamyl carboxylase catalyzes the posttranslational conversion of glutamic acid to γ-carboxyglutamic acid in precursor proteins containing the γ-carboxylation recognition site (γ-CRS). During this reaction, glutamic acid is converted to γ-carboxyglutamic acid while vitamin KH2 is converted to vitamin K 2,3-epoxide. Recombinant bovine carboxylase was purified free of γ-CRS-containing propeptide and endogenous substrate in a single-step immunoaffinity procedure. We show that in the absence of γ-CRS-containing propeptide and/or glutamate-containing substrate, carboxylase has little or no epoxidase activity. Epoxidase activity is induced by Phe-Leu-Glu-Glu-Leu (FLEEL) (9.2 pmol per min per pmol of enzyme), propeptide, residues −18 to −1 of proFactor IX (3.4 pmol per min per pmol of enzyme), FLEEL and propeptide (100 pmol per min per pmol of enzyme), and proPT28 (HVFLAPQQARSLLQRVRRANTFLEEVRK, residues −18 to +10 of human acarboxy-proprothrombin), (5.3 pmol per min per pmol of enzyme). These results indicate that in the absence of propeptide or glutamate-containing substrate, oxygenation of vitamin K by the carboxylase does not occur. Upon addition of propeptide or glutamate-containing substrate, the enzyme is converted to an active epoxidase. This regulatory mechanism prevents the generation of a highly reactive vitamin K intermediate in the absence of a substrate for carboxylation.

In this paper we analyse the effects of highway traffic flow parameters like vehicle arrival rate and density on the performance of Amplify and Forward (AF) cooperative vehicular networks along a multi-lane highway under free flow state. We derive analytical expressions for connectivity performance and verify them with Monte-Carlo simulations. When AF cooperative relaying is employed together with Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC) at the receivers the average route error rate shows 10-20 fold improvement compared to direct communication. A 4-8 fold increase in maximum number of traversable hops can also be observed at different vehicle densities when AF cooperative communication is used to strengthen communication routes. However the theorical upper bound of maximum number of hops promises higher performance gains.
