The yttrium(III) extraction kinetics and mechanism with bis-(2,4,4-trimethyl-pentyl) phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272, HA) dissolved in heptane have been investigated by constant interfacial cell with laminar flow. The data has been analyzed in terms of pseudo-first order constants. Studies on the effects of stirring rate, temperature, acidity in aqueous phase, and extractant concentration on the extraction rate show that the extraction regime is dependent on the extraction conditions. The plot of interfacial area on the rate has shown a linear relationship. This fact together with the strong surface activity of Cyanex 272 at heptane-water interfaces has made the interface the most probable location for the chemical reactions. The forward, reverse rate equations and extraction rate constant for the yttrium extraction with Cyanex 272 have been obtained under the experimental conditions. The rate-determining step has been also predicted from interfacial reaction models. The predictions have been found to be in good agreement with the rate equations obtained from experimental data, confirming the basic assumption that the chemical reaction is located at the liquid-liquid interface.

The solvent extraction of rare earths from chloride solution has been investigated using mixtures of 2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid mono-(2-ethylhexyl) ester (HEHEHP, P507) and organophosphorus acids [di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (HDEHP, P204), isopropylphosphonic acid 1-hexyl-4-ethylocryl ester (HHEOIPP), bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272), bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)monothiophosphinic acid (Cyanex 302), and bis(2,4,4-trimethypentyl)dithiophosphinic acid (Cyanex 301)]. Results show that the extractability of the selected extractants for rare earths decreases in the order: HEHEHP/HDEHP > HEHEHP/Cyanex 301 > HEHEHP/HHEOIPP > HEHEHP/Cyanex 302 > HEHEHP/Cyanex 272. A possible explanation of the different extractabilities is given based on the structure of the extractants. Furthermore, the possibilities of the separation of adjacent rare earths with these mixtures were investigated according to the extractabilities; the results show the possibility of separating the rare earths.

Kinetics and mechanism of stripping of yttrium(III) previously extracted by mixtures of bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272, HA), and 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexl ester (P507, HB) dissolved in heptane have been investigated by constant interfacial-area cell by laminar flow. The corresponding equilibrium stripping equation and equilibrium constant were obtained. The studies of effects of the stirring rate and temperature on the stripping rate show that the stripping regime is dependent on the stripping conditions. The plot of interfacial area on the rate has shown a linear relationship. This fact together with the strong surface activity of mixtures of Cyanex 272 and P507 at heptane-water interfaces makes the interface the most probable locale for the chemical reactions. The stripping rate constant is obtained, and the value is compared with that of the system with Cyanex 272 and P507 alone. It is concluded that the stripping ability with the mixtures is easier than that of P507 due to lower the activation energy of the mixtures. The stripping rate equation has also been obtained, and the rate-determining steps are the two-step interfacial chemical reactions as predicted from interfacial reaction models.

We describe the controlled fabrication of ultrathin multilayer films consisting of tri-vanadium- substituted heteropolytungstate anions (denoted as P2W15V3) and a cationic polymer of quaternized poly (4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with osmium bis(2,2'-bipyridine) (denoted as QPVP-Os) on the 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface based on layer-by-layer assembly. Cyclic voltammetry and UV-vis absorption spectrometry have been used to easily monitor the thickness and uniformity of thus-formed multilayer films. The V-centered redox reaction of P2W15V3 in the multilayer films can effectively catalyze the reduction of BrO3- and NO2-. The resulting P2W15V3/QPVP-Os multilayer film modified electrode behaves as a much promising electrochemical sensor because of the low overpotential for the catalytic reduction of BrO3- and NO2-, and the catalytic oxidation of ascorbic acid.

The extraction of zinc(II) from an aqueous chloride medium has been studied using mixtures of sec-nonylphenoxy acetic acid (CA-100) and bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272). The results demonstrate that zinc ion is extracted into heptane as ZnA(2).2HA with CA-100, ZnL2.2HL with Cyanex 272, and ZnA(2)L(2)H(2) with synergistic mixture. The equilibrium constants of the these species have been calculated and extraction mechanisms have been proposed. Thermodynamic parameters of the extraction process were determined by the temperature coefficient of extractability. The synergistic system enhances the extraction efficiency of zinc(II) and also improves the selectivity between zinc(II) and cadmium(II).

Two modification methods for multilayer formation, i.e. immersion growth and electrochemical growth, were studied comparatively for their influence on the electrochemical behavior and the electrocatalytic properties of the thus-fabricated SiMo11V-containing multilayer films. Electrochemical growth was proven to be a more suitable method than immersion growth in preparing uniform ultrathin multilayer self-assemblies with good functions. We investigated the effects of scan rate and pH on the electrochemical behavior of the monolayer and multilayer films. We also compared the electrocatalytic effects on the reduction of BrO3- and HNO2 by the multilayer films prepared by the two methods. Moreover, the influence of multilayer thickness and the identity of the outermost layer on the electrocatalytic properties were studied. Much higher catalytic currents appeared on the thicker multilayer films than those on the thinner ones. On the other hand, the catalytic currents became smaller when the multilayer films with SiMo11V as the outermost layer were covered with an additional quarternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) layer partially complexed with osmium bis(2,2'-bypyridine) chloride (QPVP-Os layer). These influences were believed to be due to the different quantities of electrocatalyst loaded in the multilayer films and the blocking effect of the QPVP-Os outermost layer. We describe here a controlled fabrication of ultrathin monolayer and multilayer films consisting of silicotungstic heteropolyanion SiW12O404- and a cationic polymer of quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with osmium bis(2,2'-bipyridine) on Au electrodes previously self-assembled with cysteamine monolayers based on layer-by-layer electrostatic interaction. The thus-forming monolayer and multilayer chemically modified electrodes are investigated by cyclic voltammetry on their electrochemical behavior and electrocatalytic properties. The composite ultrathin films exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic effects on the reduction of BrO3-, H2O2, and HNO2. The electrocatalytic effects on HNO2 reduction are enhanced with increasing layer number from 1 to 3 but level off with much thicker multilayers. The stability of the monolayer and multilayer films is also examined. (C) 2000 The Electrochemical Society. S0013-4651(99)04-057-4. All rights reserved.

Extraction and separation of Eu3+ and Zn2+ in sulfuric acid solution was investigated by hollow fiber membrane with cyanex 302 (bis (2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) monothiophosphinic acid) in counter-currently circulating operation. Reaction mechanism of membrane extraction and effect of extractant concentration and H+ concentration in aqueous phase on the mass transfer coefficient were discussed. It can be concluded that Zn2+ can be extracted completely from Eu3+ sulfate solution according to the kinetics competing difference. In one extractor process, extraction percentage of Zn2+ was not completely and Eu3+ was not extracted. Extraction percentage of Zn2+ reached 94.92%, but Eu3+ only reached 8.59% after 100 minutes extraction in two series connectors and that of Zn2+ and Eu3+ reached 99.9% and 6.53% respectively after 40 minutes extraction in three series connectors.

Ultrathin multilayer films of a polybasic lanthanide heteropoly tungstate-molybdate complex and a cationic polymer of quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with osmium bis(2,2'-bipyridine) have been fabricated on a gold electrode precoated with a cysteamine self-assembled monolayer. The multilayer films have been characterized by optical spectroscopy, small-angle X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical methods (cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance). Especially, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is developed to monitor the layer deposition processes. It provides important information such as double-layer capacitance and charge-transfer resistance. All obtained results reveal regular film growth with each layer adsorption. The synergistic extraction of Sc(III) from H2SO4 solution with bis(2, 4, 4-trimethylpentyl)monothiophosphinic acid(HBTMPTP, HL) and branched chain alkyl phosphine oxide mixture (Cyanex 925, B) in n-hexane has been investigated, The results indicated that synergistic effect was showed in low acidity (c(H2SO4) < 0.25 mol/L). The composition of the extracted complex of Sc(III) has been determined to be Sc(HL2)(2)B-3(SO4)(1/2) by the method of slope analysis, The mechanism of the synergistic extraction of Sc(III) may be : Sc3+ + 2(HL)(2(O)) + 3B((O)) + 1/2SO(4)(2-)reversible arrow(K12)Sc(HL2)(2)B-3(SO4)(1/2(O)) + 2H(+) ScL(HL2)(2(O)) + 3B((O)) + H+ + 1/2SO(4)(2-)reversible arrow(beta')Sc(HL2)(2)B-3(SO4)(1/2(O)) + 1/2(HL)(2(O)) Sc(SO4)(1.5)B-2(O) + B-(O) + 2(HL)(2(O))reversible arrow(beta')Sc(HL2)(2)B-3(SO4)(1/2(O)) + 2H(+) + SO42- Their equilibrium constants have been calculated to be lgK(13)=6.77+/-0.12, lg beta'=7.71, lg beta '' = 0.10, respectively, The IR spectra and FAB-MS of the saturated synergistic extraction complex of Sc(III) have been discussed as well.

1,4-Bis(2,3-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene dianhydride, 1,4-bis (3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene dianhydride, bis(2,3-dicarboxyphenoxy) sulfide dianhydride, bis (3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)sulfide dianhydride, and 2,3,3',4'-tetracarboxy diphenyl sulfide dianhydride were synthesized from 3-chlorophthalic anhydride and 4-chlorophthalic anhydride. Bis(2,3-dicarboxyphenyl)sulfone and bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) sulfone were obtained by the oxidation of the corresponding bis(dicarboxyphenyl)sulfide by hydrogen peroxide. The polyimides from the dianhydrides mentioned above and 4,4'-oxydianiline were prepared. The properties, such as dynamic mechanical behavior, thermooxidative stability, stress-strain behavior, chemical resistance, and permeability to some gases have been in investigated for the isomeric polyimides. The solvent extraction of Sc(III), Zr(IV), Th(IV), Fe(III) and Lu(III) with Cyanex 302 (bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)monothiophosphinic acid) and Cyanex 301 ( bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) dithiophosphinic acid) in n-hexane from acidic aqueous solutions has been investigated systematically. The effect of equilibrium aqueous acidity on the extraction with these reagents was studied. The separation of Th(IV), Fe(III) and Lu(III) from Sc(III), or the separation of other metals from Lu(III) with Cyanex 302, can be achieved by controlling the aqueous acidity. However, Cyanex 301 exhibited a poor selectivity for the above metals, except for Lu(III). The extraction of these metals with Cyanex 272, Cyanex 302 and Cyanex 301 has been compared. The stripping percentages of Sc(III) for Cyanex 302 and Cyanex 301 in a single stage are near 78% and 75% with 3.5 mol/L and 5.8 mol/L sulphuric acid solutions, respectively. The effects of extractant concentration and temperature on the extraction of Sc(III) were investigated. The stoichiometry of the extraction of Sc(III) with Cyanex 302 was determined. The role of different components of Cyanex 302 in the extraction of Sc(III) was discussed.

Among marine bacteria isolated from the cytotoxic sponge Hymeniacidon perleve, one strain NJ6-3-1 classified as Pseudomonas sp. showed both cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities. Fatty acid analysis indicated that the bacterial strain consists mainly of C16:1, C16:0, C18:1, C18:0, C15:0, C14:0. One unusual 9,10-cyclopropane-C17:0 fatty acid and C26:0 also constitute major components, as well as the existence of squalene, the precursor of triterpenoids. The major metabolites in the culture broth were identified as alkaloids, including diketopiperazines and indole compounds, namely 3,6-diisopropylpiperazine-2,5-dione, 3-benzyl-3-isopropylpiperazine-2,5-dione, 3,6-bis-(2-methylpropyl)-piperazine-2,5-dione, indole-3-carboxaldehyde, indole-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester, indole-3-ethanol, and quinazoline-2,4-dione.
