Oceanographic observations for the Mazatlan Project: October 1966 - August 1967

ENGLISH: To learn more about the early life of yellowfin tuna in their immediate environment, the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission initiated a 2-year cooperative investigation with the Direccion General de Pesca e Industrias Conexas (DGP) of Mexico in August 1966. The project called for monthly cruises of about 5 days duration to be made in a triangular track between Mazatlan, Cape San Lucas and the Tres Marias Islands. Laboratory space for the field work was provided by the DGP in their biological station in Mazatlan and the research vessel Yolanda, property of the DGP, was made available for the monthly cruises. SPANISH: Con el fin de obtener un conocimiento mas avanzado sobre la vida temprana de estos atunes aleta amarilla, y del ambiente que los rodea, 1a Comision Interamericana del Atun Tropical inicio una investigacion colaborativa de 2 anos con la Direccion General de Pesca e Industrias Conexas (DGP) de Mexico, en agosto de 1966. El proyecto requirio cruceros mensuales de unos 5 dias de duracion para que fueran realizados en un rumbo triangular entre Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas y las Islas Tres Marias. La Direccion General de Pesca ofrecio amab1emente las facilidades del laboratorio para el trabajo experimental en la estacion biologica de Mazatlan, y e1 barco de investigacion Yolanda para los cruceros mensuales. Induced diploid meiogynogenesis in the African clariid catfish Heterobranchus longifilis (Valenciennes, 1840) (Pisces: Clariidae)

Diploid meiotic gynogenesis was induced in African catfish, Heterobranchus longifilis by injection of 0.5ml/kg ovaprim on the breeders, followed by application of UV light irradiation on the spermatozoa and temperature shocking of activated eggs. Diploidy was restored by shocking haploid activated eggs at 5 degree C for 40 minutes. The normal control spermatozoa did not receive any UV irradiation nor temperature shock, while the haploid control spermatozoa were irradiated, but did not receive cold shock. The percentage hatchability in the treated group was 25%, while in the control it was 53%. Less than 15 fingerlings had morphological aberrations. After two weeks of indoor rearing, the survival percentage of the treated group was 45% in the control experiment. Cytogenetic analysis of chromosomes revealed 25 chromosomes in the haploid embryo and 50 chromosomes each in diploid gynogenesis and normal diploid control

Embryogenesis of Heterobranchus longifilis (Curvier and Valenciennes, 1840)

Studies on development of H. longifilis (Curvier and Valenciennes, 1840) were conducted at a temperature of 25EC ( 1Ec) in aquaria tanks continuous development were monitored with the use of wild Heerbrugy photomacroscope and length of yolk and larva were monitored using Stereo Olympus microscope with ocular micrometer. The division into animal and vegetal poles was observed 22 minutes after activation. The first cleavage occurred 65 minutes after activation while the second division which was perpendicular to the first line of division occurred 74 minutes after activation. This was quickly followed by the third and fourth cleavage at 80th and 82nd minutes after activation respectively. Morular stage was reached at 4 hours 20 minutes with formation of optic bud at 14 hours 35 minutes. (DBO) Developing embryo hatched after 27 hours of activation at a mean length of 6.63 and mean yolk length of 2.17. Yolk size decrease at an average rate of 38.5 % till the 5th day of total absorption. Growth of larvae proceeded faster in tail-anus region than in anus-snout portion of the body. The rate of yolk absorption and larva development (survival) as monitored in this work gives important information in Research and development programme for H. longifilis larva - an important aspect of Research development and implementation of appropriate technologies in small scale fisheries

National report of IFMP catch assessment survey (CAS) for August 2005

The first comprehensive CAS was carried out during the month of July 2005 This is the second report of CAS for the month of August 2005 following the July report. The design and methodology followed was the same as in July. This report highlights the results obtained in August catch assessment survey. The report gives estimates of mean catch rates in Kgs./boat/day, total catches in M.tons and values of the catch by species. The total catch for August was 31,633.0 M. tons. This is lower when compared with the July catch which was 39,745.1 M. tons. In August the catch composed of Dagaa (45%), Nile perch (33%), Haplochromines (16%), Tilapiines (5%) and all other species combined (1%). (PDF contains 14 pages)

Report on Fourth FIDAWOG Workshop held in Kisumo, 16 to 20 August 1999: summary of proceedings

The FIDAWOG workshop held at the Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu was the fourth stock assessment workshop held under the LVFRP programme. There were two main objectives: training in paper and report writing and presentation, and presentation of research results collected to date.

A survey of aquatic invertebrates of the Somerset Levels, August 13-14, 1981

Since 1975 the wildlife interest of the Somerset Levels and Moors have been assessed. Detailed information has been obtained on the conservation interest of meadows, breeding and wintering bird populations and the botany of aquatic habitats (rhynes). Little work to date has been carried out on the terrestrial and aquatic invertebrate fauna. The prime aim of this survey was to sample a wide variety of rhynes in order to obtain information on the nature and distribution of aquatic invertebrates.

O naturalismo em perspectiva comparada: de Émile Zola a Aluísio Azevedo

Considerado pela maioria da crítica como uma literatura pútrida (cf. ULBACH, 1868) ou torpe (cf. VERÍSSIMO, 1894), acusado de confundir ingenuamente ciência e literatura, bem como de cientizar a linguagem literária, e em particular no Brasil, além disso, questionado por plágio ou importação de uma moda estrangeira, o naturalismo foi relegado às margens da historiografia literária. Assumindo como ponto de partida esse panorama crítico, a tese propõe uma reavaliação crítica e historiográfica da estética naturalista, começando por descrever e analisar sua origem no decurso da história, a partir do advento do realismo moderno nas obras de Stendhal e de Balzac (cf. AUERBACH, 2004). Enfoca a lenta afirmação dos termos realismo e naturalismo, bem como a importância da contribuição de diferentes romancistas franceses no processo de consolidação da estética realista e de seu prolongamento no naturalismo. Discute-se também o projeto estético proposto por Zola, assim como se desconstroem mitos corroborados pela historiografia literária a respeito da teoria e do movimento naturalistas. Por fim, correlacionando a estética naturalista com o ideal republicano, aborda-se a aclimatação dos princípios naturalistas no Brasil, na obra daquele que foi seu principal representante, Aluísio Azevedo. A partir de uma abordagem comparativa entre o naturalismo na França e no Brasil, busca-se, em síntese, contribuir para o processo de revisão crítica e historiográfica de um período literário muito produtivo nos dois países, não obstante a tendência para sua desvalorização em geral observada nas manifestações da crítica novecentista

Inmigración, familia y empleo. Estrategias familiares en los inicios de la industrialización, Pamplona (1840-1930)

Dónde, con quién y de qué vivir son cuestiones clave a la hora de explicar las estrategias familiares, y también los ejes de este libro. Tras explicitar sus premisas teóricas y plantear las líneas generales en la evolución de la ciudad, Iruñea-Pamplona, el libro se estructura en tres capítulos que analizan cada una de las estas preguntas. Por un lado, el autor constata la importancia de la inmigración y analiza las lógicas familiares que guían estos movimientos, así como su influencia en la realidad lingüística urbana. En segundo lugar estudia las diferencias sociales en la formación de los hogares, apreciando un fortalecimiento de la familia obrera en los inicios de la industrialización. Por último se centra en la participación de los diferentes miembros de la familia en el mercado laboral, prestando especial atención al empleo femenino, los valores de género subyacentes y la feminización de la pobreza. Se trata de una investigación sobre estrategias familiares, que también pretende reflexionar sobre el papel de los valores familiares en el mantenimiento del orden social.

Toxicité des sulfures dissous chez le poisson-chat africain, Heterobranchus longifilis (Valenciennes, 1840)

Biological tests were carried out using static bioassay systems to determine the median lethal concentration of total sulfide (H2S, HS, S2) for African catfish (Heterobranchus longifilis, Valenciennes, 1840) at fry and juvenile stages.

El impacto de la Guerra de Cuba en la economía española, 1890-1913

[ES] El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar el impacto real que supuso para la economía española la pérdida de las últimas colonias, y en concreto, Cuba, y la visión que los economistas de la época tuvieron sobre este hecho. Para ello, me he centrado en los análisis de esos economistas, y he analizado datos estadísticos económicos de aquella época. Para concluir que, el impacto de este suceso en el desarrollo económico, no fue negativo, y que incluso en los años posteriores a la guerra, la economía creció en diferentes sectores. Fue un hecho que marcó el devenir del país y por el que se inició el trabajo de recuperación y desarrollo económico.

Salmon action plan. River Ribble - August 2000

In February 1996 A Strategy for the Management of Salmon in England and Wales was launched by the National Rivers Authority. The strategy concentrates on four main objectives for the management of salmon fisheries in England and Wales: (i) Optimise the number of salmon returning to home water fisheries, (ii) Maintain and improve the fitness and diversity of salmon stocks, (iii) Optimise the total economic value of surplus stocks, (iv) Ensure necessary costs are met by beneficiaries. These four objectives will be addressed through local Salmon Action Plans (SAPs) which will be produced for each of the principle salmon rivers in England and Wales by the year 2001. This Salmon Action Plan for the River Ribble reviews the status of the stock and the fisheries, seeks to identify the main factors limiting performance, to draw up and cost a list of options to address these, and to consult with local interest groups.
