All refractories show enhanced corrosion near the slag/metal interface due to Marangoni and convective flows. However, in the case of oxide refractories containing graphite flakes, corrosion is severe due to periodic oscillations in the contact angle at the slag/metal interface, resulting in cyclic dissolution of oxide and graphite into the slag and metal, respectively. Alumina--graphite (AG) refractories should be used only where they are not in simultaneous contact with slag (flux) and low carbon steel.

The standard Gibbs' free energies of formation of compounds of type Cu2L%05 (Ln = Tb,Dy,Er,Yb) were measured using the solid state cell in the temperature range of 970 to 1323 K For formation of Cu2L?O5 compounds from their binary component oxides according to the reaction 2 CUO (s) + L%03 (s) -, Cu,,L%05 (s),the Gibbs' free energy changes can be represented by the following equations:AGO = 13 080 - 13.70 'I" (+80) J mol-' (Ln = Tb)AGq = 11 480 - 13.51 T (260) J mol-I (Ln = Dy)AGO = 10 750 - 13.99 T (260) J mol-I (Ln = Er)AGO = 9 920 - 13.90 T (260) J mol-' (Ln = Yb) Since formation of the compounds is endothermic, the compounds become thermodynamically unstable with respect to their component oxides below 955 K for Cu2Tb205, 850 K for Cu2Dy205, 768 K for Cu2Er205 and 714 K for Cu2Yb2OS When the oxygen partial pressure over Cu2L%05 is lowered, they decompose according to the scheme, 2 CU,L%O, (s) -r 2 L%03 (s) +2 cu20 (s) + 02(g)The equilibrium chemical potentials of oxygen corresponding to the dissociation reactions are computed from the emf data and auxiliary information on Cu20 and CuO. The computed decomposition temperatures at an oxygen partial pressure of 5.0 x ld Pa are compared with those obtained directly from combined thermogravimetric (TGA) and differential thermal analyses (DTA).The free energy, enthalpy and entropy of formation of Cu2Ln205 compounds show systematic variation with the ionic radius of the trivalent lanthanide ion. The trends obtained in this study are compared with information available in the literature. The staZbility of Cu2Ln205 compounds increases with the decrease in ionic radii of the ~ n ion~. +

K0.5La0.5Bi2Nb2O9, a relaxor, was synthesized and the structural studies confirmed it to be an n = 2 member of the Aurivillius oxides. The ½{h00} and ½{hk0} types of superlattice reflections in the electron diffraction patterns reflected the presence of ordered polar regions. A broad dielectric peak with frequency dependent dielectric maximum temperature was observed. The dielectric relaxation obeyed the Vogel-Fulcher relation wherein Ea = 0.04 eV, Tf = 428 K,and ωo = 1010 Hz. The diffuseness parameter γ = 2.003 established the relaxor nature and it was attributed to the A-site cationic disorder. The piezoelectric d31 coefficient was 0.5 pC/N at 300 K and 2 pC/N at 480 K.

Background and aim of the study: The quantification of incidentally found aortic valve calcification on computed tomography (CT) is not performed routinely, as data relating to the accuracy of aortic valve calcium for estimating the severity of aortic stenosis (AS) is neither consistent nor validated. As aortic valve calcium quantification by CT is confounded by wall and coronary ostial calcification, as well as motion artifact, the ex-vivo micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) of stenotic aortic valves allows a precise measurement of the amounts of calcium present. The study aim, using excised aortic valves from patients with confirmed AS, was to determine if the amount of calcium on micro-CT correlated with the severity of AS. Methods: Each of 35 aortic valves that had been excised from patients during surgical valve replacement were examined using micro-CT imaging. The amount of calcium present was determined by absolute and proportional values of calcium volume in the specimen. Subsequently, the correlation between calcium volume and preoperative mean aortic valve gradient (MAVG), peak transaortic velocity (V-max), and aortic valve area (AVA) on echocardiography, was evaluated. Results: The mean calcium volume across all valves was 603.2 +/- 398.5 mm(3), and the mean ratio of calcium volume to total valve volume was 0.36 +/- 0.16. The mean aortic valve gradient correlated positively with both calcium volume and ratio (r = 0.72, p <0.001). V-max also correlated positively with the calcium volume and ratio (r = 0.69 and 0.76 respectively; p <0.001). A logarithmic curvilinear model proved to be the best fit to the correlation. A calcium volume of 480 mm(3) showed sensitivity and specificity of 0.76 and 0.83, respectively, for a diagnosis of severe AS, while a calcium ratio of 0.37 yielded sensitivity and specificity of 0.82 and 0.94, respectively. Conclusion: A radiological estimation of calcium amount by volume, and its proportion to the total valve volume, were shown to serve as good predictive parameters for severe AS. An estimation of the calcium volume may serve as a complementary measure for determining the severity of AS when aortic valve calcification is identified on CT imaging. This paper addresses the problem of multiple unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) rendezvous when the UAVs have to perform maneuvers to avoid collisions with other UAVs. The proposed solution consists of using velocity control and a wandering maneuver, if needed, of the UAVs based on a consensus among them on the estimated time of arrival at the point of the rendezvous. This algorithm, with a slight modification is shown to be useful in tracking stationary or slowly moving targets with a standoff distance. The proposed algorithm is simple and computationally efficient. The simulation results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach. DOI: 10.1061/(ASCE)AS.1943-5525.0000145. This paper presents the details of crack growth study and remaining life assessment of concrete specimens made up of high strength concrete (HSC, HSC1) and ultra high strength concrete (UHSC). Flexural fatigue tests have been conducted on HSC, HSC1 and UHSC beams under constant amplitude loading with a stress ratio of 0.2. It is observed from the studies that (i) the failure patterns of HSC1 and UHSC beams indicate their ductility as the member was intact till the crack propagated up to 90% of the beam depth and (ii) the remaining life decreases with increase of notch depth (iii) the failure of the specimen is influenced by the frequency of loading. A ``Net K'' model has been proposed by using non-linear fracture mechanics principles for crack growth analysis and remaining life prediction. SIF (K) has been computed by using the principle of superposition. SIP due to the cohesive forces applied on the effective crack face inside the process zone has been obtained through Green's function approach by applying bi-linear tension softening relationship to consider the cohesive the stresses acting ahead of the crack tip. Remaining life values have been have been predicted and compared with the corresponding experimental values and observed that they are in good agreement with each other.

Growth of high density germanium nanowires on Si substrates by electron beam evaporation (EBE) has been demonstrated using gold as catalyst. The germanium atoms are provided by evaporating germanium by electron beam evaporation (EBE) technique. Effect of substrate (growth) temperature and deposition time on the growth of nanowires has studied. The morphology of the nanowires was investigated by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). It has been observed that a narrow temperature window from 380 degrees C to 480 degrees C is good for the nanowires growth as well as restriction on the maximum length of nanowires. It is also observed that high substrate temperature leading to the completely absence of nanowire growth.

The primary objective of the present work was to study the electronic and in vitro electrochemical properties of micro-arc oxidized titania films on Cp Ti, fabricated independently in various electrolyte solutions consisting of anions such as phosphate (PO43-), borate (B4O72-), citrate (C6H5O73-) and silicate (SiO32-). Further the role of anions on the structural, morphological and compositional properties of the fabricated films was studied. All the titania films were developed by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technique for a fixed treatment time of 8 min under constant current mode. The surface morphology, elemental distribution, composition and structural characteristics of the films were assessed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The thermodynamic and kinetic corrosion properties of the films were studied under simulated body fluid (SBF) conditions (pH 7.4 and 37 degrees C) by conducting chronopotentiometric and potentiodynamic polarization tests. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) coupled with equivalent circuit modelling was carried out to analyse the frequency response and Mott-Schottky analysis was performed to study the semiconducting (electronic) properties of the films. Salt spray fog accelerated corrosion test was conducted for 168h as per ASTM B117 standard to corroborate the corrosion and semiconducting properties of the samples based on the visual examination. The XRD results showed that the transformation from the metastable anatase phase to the thermodynamically stable rutile phase and the crystalline growth of the respective phases were strongly influenced by the addition of anions. The SEM-EDS results demonstrated that the phosphorous (P) content in the films varied from 2.4 at% to 5.0 at% indicating that the amount of P in the films could be modified by adding an appropriate electrolyte additive. The electrochemical corrosion test results showed that the film fabricated in citrate (C6H5O73-) containing electrolyte is thermodynamically and kinetically more stable compared to that of all the others. The results of the Mott-Schottky analysis indicated that all the fabricated films showed an n-type semiconducting behaviour and the film developed in citrate (C6H5O73-) containing electrolyte exhibited the lowest donor concentration and the most negative flat band potential that contributed to its highest corrosion resistance in SBF solution. The results of the salt spray accelerated corrosion tests were in agreement with those obtained from the electrochemical and Mott-Schottky analysis.

In this study, we present a new computational approach for studying the effect of melt convection on solidification at the micro-scale level. Models for dendritic and eutectic growth are developed on the basis of the enthalpy technique and incorporate the presence of flow in the domain. Simulation results show the growth and motion of dendrites and evolution of eutectic lamellae and their interaction with melt flow. The present study provides the foundation for development of an efficient generalized micro-scale solidification model, which can potentially be coupled with system-scale models based on the same framework.

A simple method to study the air bubble dynamics and to burst the air bubbles formed on the electrode– electrolyte interface in a parallel gate electrode fluidic channel is demonstrated. Upon application of a voltage across the electrodes, volume of water contained between them begins to electrolyzing depending on the conductivity, as well as it boils due to heating effect. This results in bubble formation within. These bubbles grow in radius with higher potential difference applied across the electrodes. As an approach towards removing these bubbles, an alternating current is applied at low potential difference of a 5 volts and high frequency at few megahertz. The alternating electric field had a heating effect on the bubbles where the energy input due to current heats up water and bursts the bubble. The bubbles of size up to 480μm were burst at 2500 V/m using this approach.

Thrust-generating flapping foils are known to produce jets inclined to the free stream at high Strouhal numbers St = fA/U-infinity, where f is the frequency and A is the amplitude of flapping and U-infinity is the free-stream velocity. Our experiments, in the limiting case of St —> infinity (zero free-stream speed), show that a purely oscillatory pitching motion of a chordwise flexible foil produces a coherent jet composed of a reverse Benard-Karman vortex street along the centreline, albeit over a specific range of effective flap stiffnesses. We obtain flexibility by attaching a thin flap to the trailing edge of a rigid NACA0015 foil; length of flap is 0.79 c where c is rigid foil chord length. It is the time-varying deflections of the flexible flap that suppress the meandering found in the jets produced by a pitching rigid foil for zero free-stream condition. Recent experiments (Marais et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 710, 2012, p. 659) have also shown that the flexibility increases the St at which non-deflected jets are obtained. Analysing the near-wake vortex dynamics from flow visualization and particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements, we identify the mechanisms by which flexibility suppresses jet deflection and meandering. A convenient characterization of flap deformation, caused by fluid-flap interaction, is through a non-dimensional effective stiffness', EI* = 8 EI/(rho V-TEmax(2) s(f) c(f)(3)/2), representing the inverse of the flap deflection due to the fluid-dynamic loading; here, EI is the bending stiffness of flap, rho is fluid density, V-TEmax is the maximum velocity of rigid foil trailing edge, s(f) is span and c(f) is chord length of the flexible flap. By varying the amplitude and frequency of pitching, we obtain a variation in EI* over nearly two orders of magnitude and show that only moderate EI*. (0.1 less than or similar to EI * less than or similar to 1 generates a sustained, coherent, orderly jet. Relatively `stiff' flaps (EI* greater than or similar to 1), including the extreme case of no flap, produce meandering jets, whereas highly `flexible' flaps (EI* less than or similar to 0.1) produce spread-out jets. Obtained from the measured mean velocity fields, we present values of thrust coefficients for the cases for which orderly jets are observed.

In China, the recent outbreak of novel influenza A/H7N9 virus has been assumed to be severe, and it may possibly turn brutal in the near future. In order to develop highly protective vaccines and drugs for the A/H7N9 virus, it is critical to find out the selection pressure of each amino acid site. In the present study, six different statistical methods consisting of four independent codon-based maximum likelihood (CML) methods, one hierarchical Bayesian (HB) method and one branch-site (BS) method, were employed to determine if each amino acid site of A/H7N9 virus is under natural selection pressure. Functions for both positively and negatively selected sites were inferred by annotating these sites with experimentally verified amino acid sites. Comprehensively, the single amino acid site 627 of PB2 protein was inferred as positively selected and it function was identified as a T-cell epitope (TCE). Among the 26 negatively selected amino acid sites of PB2, PB1, PA, HA, NP, NA, M1 and NS2 proteins, only 16 amino acid sites were identified to be involved in TCEs. In addition, 7 amino acid sites including, 608 and 609 of PA, 480 of NP, and 24, 25, 109 and 205 of M1, were identified to be involved in both B-cell epitopes (BCEs) and TCEs. Conversely, the function of positions 62 of PA, and, 43 and 113 of HA was unknown. In conclusion, the seven amino acid sites engaged in both BCEs and TCEs were identified as highly suitable targets, as these sites will be predicted to play a principal role in inducing strong humoral and cellular immune responses against A/H7N9 virus. This article considers a semi-infinite mathematical programming problem with equilibrium constraints (SIMPEC) defined as a semi-infinite mathematical programming problem with complementarity constraints. We establish necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for the (SIMPEC). We also formulate Wolfe- and Mond-Weir-type dual models for (SIMPEC) and establish weak, strong and strict converse duality theorems for (SIMPEC) and the corresponding dual problems under invexity assumptions.
