In order to find leading compounds with an excellent fungicidal activity, the tide compound 2-(1,3-dithiolan-2-yl-idene) -1-phenyl-2-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl) ethanone was synthesized according to the biological isosterism and its structure was confirmed by means of IR, MS, H-1 NMR and elemental analysis. The single crystal structure of the tide compound was determined by X-ray diffraction. The preliminary biological test shows that the synthesized compound exhibits some biological activities.

The solid-state structures of a series of seven substituted 3-methylidene-1H-indol-2(3H)-one derivatives have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and are compared in detail. Six of the structures {(3Z)-3-(1H-pyrrol-2- ylmethylidene)-1H-indol-2(3H)-one, C13H10N2O, (2a); (3Z)-3-( 2-thienylmethylidene)-1H-indol-2(3H)-one, C13H9NOS, (2b); (3E)-3-(2-furylmethylidene)-1H-indol-2(3H)-one monohydrate, C13H9NO2 center dot H2O, (3a); 3-(1-methylethylidene)-1H-indol- 2(3H)-one, C11H11NO, (4a); 3-cyclohexylidene-1H-indol- 2(3H)-one, C14H15NO, (4c); and spiro[1,3-dioxane-2,3'-indolin]- 2'-one, C11H11NO3, (5)} display, as expected, intermolecular hydrogen bonding (N-H center dot center dot center dot O=C) between the 1H-indol-2(3H)-one units. However, methyl 3-(1-methylethylidene)- 2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indole-1-carboxylate, C13H13NO3, (4b), a carbamate analogue of (4a) lacking an N-H bond, displays no intermolecular hydrogen bonding. The structure of (4a) contains three molecules in the asymmetric unit, while (4b) and (4c) both contain two independent molecules.

Voltammetric studies of the reduction of oxygen in the room temperature ionic liquid [C(4)dmim][N(Tf)(2)] have revealed a significant positive shift in the back peak potential, relative to that expected for a simple electron transfer. This shift is thought to be due to the strong association of the electrogenerated superoxide anion with the solvent cation. In this work we quantitatively simulate the microdisc electrode voltammetry using a model based upon a one-electron reduction followed by a reversible chemical step, involving the formation of the [C(4)dmim](+)center dot center dot center dot O-2(center dot-) ion-pair, and in doing so we extract a set of parameters completely describing the system. We have simulated the voltammetry in the absence of a following chemical step and have shown that it is impossible to simultaneously fit both the forward and reverse peaks. To further support the parameters extracted from fitting the experimental voltammetry, we have used these parameters to independently simulate the double step chronoamperometric response and found excellent agreement. The parameters used to describe the association of the O-2(center dot-) with the [C(4)dmim](+) were k(f) = 1.4 x 10(3) s(-1) for the first-order rate constant and K-eq = 25 for the equilibrium constant.

The reductions of nitrobenzene and 4-nitrophenol were studied by cyclic voltammetry in the room temperature ionic liquid 1-butyl2,3-dimethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C(4)dmim][N(Tf)(2)] on a gold microelectrode. Nitrobenzene was reduced reversibly by one electron and further by two electrons in a chemically irreversible step. The more complicated reduction of 4-nitrophenol revealed three reductive peaks (two irreversible and one reversible) which were successfully simulated using the digital simulation program DigiSim((R)) using a mechanism of rapid self-protonation, given below.

Five new compounds in the system (NH4)Cl/HgCl2/H2O have been obtained as colourless single crystals, (NH4)Hg5Cl11, (NH4)(2)Hg3Cl8(H2O), (NH4)(4)Hg3Cl10(H2O)(2), (NH4)(2)HgCl4(H2O), and (NH4)(10)Hg3Cl16. In all of these, as in HgCl2 itself, (almost) linear HgCl2 molecules persist with Hg-Cl distances varying from 229 to 236 pm. In (NH4)(10)Hg3Cl16 there are also tetrahedra [HgCl4] with d(Hg-Cl) = 247 pm present. If larger Hg-Cl distances (of up to 340 pm) are considered as belonging to the coordination sphere of Hg-II, the structures may be described as consisting of isolated octahedra and tetrahedra as in (NH4)(10)Hg3Cl16, edge-connected chains as in (NH4)(2)HgCl4(H2O), edge-connected chains and layers of octahedra as in (NH4)(4)Hg3Cl10(H2O)(2), corrugated layers of edge-connected octahedra as in (NH4)(2)Hg3Cl8(H2O), and, finally, a three-dimensional network of connected six- and seven-coordinate Hg-Cl polyhedra as in (NH4)Hg5Cl11. The water molecules are never attached to Hg-II. The (NH4)(+) cations, and sometimes Cl- anions, play a role for electroneutrality only.

Co3O4, Fe2O3 and a mixture of the two oxides Co–Fe (molar ratio of Co3O4/Fe2O3 = 0.67 and atomic ratio of Co/Fe = 1) were prepared by the calcination of cobalt oxalate and/or iron oxalate salts at 500 °C for 2 h in static air using water as a solvent/dispersing agent. The catalysts were studied in the steam reforming of ethanol to investigate the effect of the partial substitution of Co3O4 with Fe2O3 on the catalytic behaviour. The reforming activity over Fe2O3, while initially high, underwent fast deactivation. In comparison, over the Co–Fe catalyst both the H2 yield and stability were higher than that found over the pure Co3O4 or Fe2O3 catalysts. DRIFTS-MS studies under the reaction feed highlighted that the Co–Fe catalyst had increased amounts of adsorbed OH/water; similar to Fe2O3. Increasing the amount of reactive species (water/OH species) adsorbed on the Co–Fe catalyst surface is proposed to facilitate the steam reforming reaction rather than decomposition reactions reducing by-product formation and providing a higher H2 yield.

The Schiff base, 3-hydroxyquinoxaline-2-carboxalidine-4-aminoantipyrine, was synthesized by the condensation of 3-hydroxyquinoxaline-2-carboxaldehyde with 4-aminoantipyrine. HPLC, FT-IR and NMR spectral data revealed that the compound exists predominantly in the amide tautomeric form and exhibits both absorption and fluorescence solvatochromism, large stokes shift, two electron quasireversible redox behaviour and good thermal stability, with a glass transition temperature of 104oC. The third-order non-linear optical character was studied using open aperture Z-scan methodology employing 7 ns pulses at 532 nm. The third-order non-linear absorption coefficient, b, was 1.48 x 10-6 cm W-1 and the imaginary part of the third-order non-linear optical susceptibility, Im c(3), was 3.36 x10-10 esu. The optical limiting threshold for the compound was found to be 340 MW cm-2.

The tridentate Schiff base ligand, 7-amino-4-methyl-5-aza-3-hepten-2-one (HAMAH), prepared by the mono-condensation of 1,2diaminoethane and acetylacetone, reacts with Cu(BF4)(2) center dot 6H(2)O to produce initially a dinuclear Cu(II) complex, [{Cu(AMAH)}(2) (mu-4,4'-bipyJ](BF4)(2) (1) which undergoes hydrolysis in the reaction mixture and finally produces a linear polymeric chain compound, [Cu(acac)(2)(mu-4,4'-bipy)](n) (2). The geometry around the copper atom in compound 1 is distorted square planar while that in compound 2 is essentially an elongated octahedron. On the other hand, the ligand HAMAH reacts with Cu(ClO4)(2) center dot 6H(2)O to yield a polymeric zigzag chain, [{Cu(acac)(CH3OH)(mu-4,4'-bipy)}(ClO4)](n) (3). The geometry of the copper atom in 3 is square pyramidal with the two bipyridine molecules in the cis equatorial positions. All three complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. A probable explanation for the different size and shape of the reported polynuclear complexes formed by copper(II) and 4,4'-bipyridine has been put forward by taking into account the denticity and crystal field strength of the blocking ligand as well as the Jahn-Teller effect in copper(II). N-Propynoyl (5R)-5-phenylmorpholin-2-one undergoes nonregioselective cycloaddition with aromatic azides to furnish mixtures of the corresponding triazoles, whereas N-propenoyl (5R)-5-phenylmorpholin-2-one reacts to furnish the corresponding diastereoisomerically pure aziridines in moderate to good yields, presumably via the intermediate triazolines.
