In this article, the authors explore media coverage of a recent acquisition across national borders. Their starting point is that the media represent a key arena of “discursive strategizing” for actors such as corporate managers. They illustrate and specify how global capitalism, as discourse relying on economic and financial rationale and exemplified here by the acquiring firm’s attempts to expand, meets national spirit, exemplified here by the complexity in selling the acquisition target to foreigners. The main contribution of this study lies in identifying how key actors draw on and mobilize rationalistic and nationalistic discourses in public discussion. The analysis illustrates that the same actors can draw on different—even contradictory—discourses at different points in time. Furthermore, different actors—even with opposing objectives—may draw on the same discourse in legitimizing their positions and pursuing specific ends.

Copper(II) hydrazine carboxylate monohydrate, Cu(N2H3COO)2·H2O and chromium (II, III) hydrazine carboxylate hydrates, Cu(N2H3COO)2·H2O and Cu(N2H3COO)2·3H2O have been prepared and characterised by chemical analysis, IR, visible spectra and magnetic measurements. Thermal analysis of the copper complex yields a mixture of copper metal and copper oxide. Chromium complexes on thermal decomposition yield Cr2O3 as residue. Decomposition of chromium(HI) complex under hydrothermal conditions yield CrOOH, a precursor to CrO2.

Using the recently developed model predictive static programming (MPSP) technique, a nonlinear suboptimal reentry guidance scheme is presented in this paper for a reusable launch vehicle (RLV). Unlike traditional RLV guidance, the problem considered over here is restricted only to pitch plane maneuver of the vehicle, which allows simpler mission planning and vehicle load management. The computationally efficient MPSP technique brings in the philosophy of trajectory optimization into the framework of guidance design, which in turn results in very effective guidance schemes in general. In the problem addressed in this paper, it successfully guides the RLV through the critical reentry phase both by constraining it to the allowable narrow flight corridor as well as by meeting the terminal constraints at the end of the reentry segment. The guidance design is validated by considering possible aerodynamic uncertainties as well as dispersions in the initial conditions. (C) 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

A thermal model for a conventional biogas plant has been developed in order to understand the heat transfer from the slurry and the gas holder to the surrounding earth and air respectively. The computations have been performed for two conditions : (i) when the slurry is at an ambient temperature of 20°C, and (ii) when it is at 35°C, the optimum temperature for anaerobic fermentation. Under both these conditions, the gas holder is the major “culprit” with regard to heat losses from the biogas plant. The calculations provide an estimate for the heat which has to be supplied by external means to compensate for the net heat losses which occur if the slurry is to be maintained at 35°C. Even if this external supply of heat is realised through (the calorific value of) biogas, there is a net increase in the biogas output, and therefore a net benefit, by operating the plant at 35°C. At this elevated temperature, the cooling effect of adding the influent at ambient temperature is not insignificant. In conclusion, the results of the thermal analysis are used to define a strategy for operating biogas plants at optimum temperatures, or at higher temperatures than the ambient.

We present the x-ray absorption data at the oxygen K-edge using total yield technique for Gd1−xPrxba2Cu3O7 (x= 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0). The data clearly to oxygen that the holes doped in the GdBa2Cu3O7 due to oxygen composition are not removed by Pr doping even for the x = 1.0 sample, suggesting that Pr is predominantly in the formally trivalent state. However, the data also clearly indicate the evidence of hybridization effects between the Pr3+ and the adjacent CuO2 layers. This is suggested to be responsible for the progressive suppression of Tc and the metallicity with Pr doping in these systems.

The 3' terminal 1255 nt sequence of Physalis mottle virus (PhMV) genomic RNA has been determined from a set of overlapping cDNA clones. The open reading frame (ORF) at the 3' terminus corresponds to the amino acid sequence of the coat protein (CP) determined earlier except for the absence of the dipeptide, Lys-Leu, at position 110-111. In addiition, the sequence upstream of the CP gene contains the message coding for 178 amino acid residues of the C-terminus of the putative replicase protein (RP). The sequence downstream of the CP gene contains an untranslated region whose terminal 80 nucleotides can be folded into a characteristic tRNA-like structure. A phylogenetic tree constructed after aligning separately the sequence of the CP, the replicase protein (RP) and the tRNA-like structure determined in this study with the corresponding sequences of other tymoviruses shows that PhMV wrongly named belladonna mottle virus [BDMV(I)] is a separate tymovirus and not another strain of BDMV(E) as originally envisaged. The phylogenetic tree in all the three cases is identical showing that any subset of genomic sequence of sufficient length can be used for establishing evolutionary relationships among tymoviruses.

Pressure and temperature dependence of 35Cl nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) has been investigated in NaClO3 and Ba(ClO3)2·H2O. NQR frequencies are measured in the temperature range 77–300 K and up to 5 kbar pressure. The torsional frequency of the ClO3 pyramid and its variation with both pressure and temperature are evaluated from the NQR frequencies under the harmonic approximation. In general, the pressure effect on the internal motions is found to be less in Ba (ClO3)2·H2O compared to NaClO3. When the samples are cooled to 77 K the pressure coeffecient of NQR frequency becomes nearly zero in sodium chlorate, whereas it retains a value of 6 kHz kbar−1 in barium chlorate. This behaviour follows from the fact that at 77K, the torsional frequency in NaClO3 is unaffected by the application of pressure while it increases at the rate 12 cm−1 kbar−1 in Ba(ClO3)2·H2O.

Analytical and numerical solutions of a general problem related to the radially symmetric inward spherical solidification of a superheated melt have been studied in this paper. In the radiation-convection type boundary conditions, the heat transfer coefficient has been taken as time dependent which could be infinite, at time,t=0. This is necessary, for the initiation of instantaneous solidification of superheated melt, over its surface. The analytical solution consists of employing suitable fictitious initial temperatures and fictitious extensions of the original region occupied by the melt. The numerical solution consists of finite difference scheme in which the grid points move with the freezing front. The numerical scheme can handle with ease the density changes in the solid and liquid states and the shrinkage or expansions of volumes due to density changes. In the numerical results, obtained for the moving boundary and temperatures, the effects of several parameters such as latent heat, Boltzmann constant, density ratios, heat transfer coefficients, etc. have been shown. The correctness of numerical results has also been checked by satisfying the integral heat balance at every timestep.

Diffuse optical tomographic image reconstruction uses advanced numerical models that are computationally costly to be implemented in the real time. The graphics processing units (GPUs) offer desktop massive parallelization that can accelerate these computations. An open-source GPU-accelerated linear algebra library package is used to compute the most intensive matrix-matrix calculations and matrix decompositions that are used in solving the system of linear equations. These open-source functions were integrated into the existing frequency-domain diffuse optical image reconstruction algorithms to evaluate the acceleration capability of the GPUs (NVIDIA Tesla C 1060) with increasing reconstruction problem sizes. These studies indicate that single precision computations are sufficient for diffuse optical tomographic image reconstruction. The acceleration per iteration can be up to 40, using GPUs compared to traditional CPUs in case of three-dimensional reconstruction, where the reconstruction problem is more underdetermined, making the GPUs more attractive in the clinical settings. The current limitation of these GPUs in the available onboard memory (4 GB) that restricts the reconstruction of a large set of optical parameters, more than 13, 377. An in vitro transcription system from Candida utilis is described. The template used is a hybrid plasmid containing Saccharomyces cerevisiae CYC1 promoter linked to a synthetic 377-bp G-minus casette (1). In vitro transcriptions are carried out in the presence of RNase. T1. Under these conditions only the transcripts that are resistant to RNase T1 accumulate. Using this protocol, it has been shown that in the absence of cytosolic factors RNA polymerase II (pol II) from C. utilis initiated RNA synthesis randomly. But both C. utilis and S. cerevisiae cell-free extracts could direct pol II from C. utilis to initiate transcription accurately. Results also indicated that the general transcription factors are functionally interchangeable between S. cerevisiae and C. utilis

The hot deformation characteristics of IN 600 nickel alloy are studied using hot compression testing in the temperature range 850-1200-degrees-C and strain rate range 0.001-100 s-1. A processing map for hot working is developed on the basis of the data obtained, using the principles of dynamic materials modelling. The map exhibits a single domain with a peak efficiency of power dissipation of 48% occurring at 1200-degrees-C and 0.2 s-1, at which the material undergoes dynamic recrystallisation (DRX). These are the optimum conditions for hot working of IN 600. At strain rates higher than 1 s-1, the material exhibits flow localisation and its microstructure consists of localised bands of fine recrystallised grains. The presence of iron in the Ni-Cr alloy narrows the DRX domain owing to a higher temperature required for carbide dissolution, which is essential for the occurrence of DRX. The efficiency of DRX in Ni-Cr is, however, enhanced by iron addition.

The oil phase, in an oil-in-water emulsion on a steel substrate, is strongly repelled by the substrate. The oil in this situation does not wet the steel and steel/steel friction is high. In this work we disperse anionic surfactants in an oil film and study the effect of this dispersion on the force of interaction between a silica colloid probe (AFM) carrying the oil film and a steel substrate in water. It is observed that when the surfactant is oil insoluble and the interaction time is short the strong entropic repulsion (without the surfactant) is replaced by a strong attraction. The steel on steel sliding friction in this case is low compared to that what is achieved when the surfactant is soluble in oil. The rationale underlying these interactions is explored here.
