The variation of the linear electro-optic effect in (-)-2-(alpha-methylbenzylamino)-5-nitropyridine with the wavelength of the incident light at room temperature has been measured. The reduced half-wave voltages have been found to have the values 2.1, 2.8, and 6.0 kV at 488, 514.5, and 632.8 nm respectively and the corresponding values of the linear electro-optic coefficient have been evaluated.;The interpretation of the results in terms of the structures of the molecule and the crystal is discussed. The thermal variation of the birefringence has also been investigated and the coefficient for the temperature variation of the refractive index difference is found to have the value (d Delta n/dT)=9.3X10(-5) K-1.

Rare-earth nickelates Ln(2)BaNi(1-x)Cu(2)O(5), Ln = Nd and Dy, and Dy2-xYxBaNiO5 have been synthesized in order to investigate the effect of substitution of Ni by Cu and Dy by nonmagnetic Y on the magnetic properties of the nickelates. In Ln(2)BaNi(1-x)Cu(x)O(5), the nickelate structure (x=0.0) changes to the cuprate structure (x=1.0) at a specific composition (x=0.3). The Neel temperature of Nd2BaNi1-xCuxO5 decreases continuously with increase in x upto x=0.3 (T-N = 18K); when x > 0.3, the materials are paramagnetic down to 20K. The mu(eff) in Nd2BaNi1-xCxO5 essentially corresponds to the contribution of the Nd ions. In Dy2-xYxBaNiO5, the Neel temperature decreases from 40K when x=0.0 to 24K when x=1.5. The compositions with 1.5 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 2 (including the x=1.95 composition) are paramagnetic down to 20K, unlike Y2BaNiO5 (x=2.0) which exhibits a T-N of 370K. Even the smallest concentration of paramagnetic Dy seems to destroy the antiferromagnetic Ni-O-Ni chains in Y2BaNiO5.

Synthesis of methyl 2, 7-dimethyltricyclo{5.2.2.0(1,5}undec-5-en-6-carboxylates, the tricyclic skeleton present in (+)-allo-cedrol (1) is described using the Diels-Alder strategy. Thus, Birch reduction of the aromatic acid 8 gives 5, the methyl ester of which is isomerised with DBU to a 1:1 mixture of the dienes 6 and 4. Cycloaddition of this mixture with 2-chloroacrylonitrile followed by hydrolysis yields the ketone 60 having the tricyclo{5.2.2.0(1.5)}undec-5-ene framework. Similar reaction with methyl vinyl ketone affords the regioisomeric adducts 61 and 62.

A method for the preparation of acicular hydrogoethite (alpha -FeOOH.xH(2)O, 0.1 < x < 0.22) particles of 0.3-1 mm length has been optimized by air oxidation of Fe( II) hydroxide gel precipitated from aqueous (NH4)(2)Fe(SO4)(2) solutions containing 0.005-0.02 atom% of cationic Pt, Pd or Rh additives as morphology controlling agents. Hydrogoethite particles are evolved from the amorphous ferrous hydroxide gel by heterogeneous nucleation and growth. Preferential adsorption of additives on certain crystallographic planes thereby retarding the growth in the perpendicular direction, allows the particles to acquire acicular shapes with high aspect ratios of 8-15. Synthetic hydrogoethite showed a mass loss of about 14% at similar to 280 degreesC, revealing the presence of strongly coordinated water of hydration in the interior of the goethite crystallites. As evident from IR spectra, excess H2O molecules (0.1- 0.22 per formula unit) are located in the strands of channels formed in between the double ribbons of FeO6 octahedra running parallel to the c- axis. Hydrogoethite particles constituted of multicrystallites are formed with Pt as additive, whereas single crystallite particles are obtained with Pd (or Rh). For both dehydroxylation as well as H-2 reduction, a lower reaction temperature (similar to 220 degreesC) was observed for the former (Pt treated) compared to the latter (Pd or Rh) (similar to 260 degreesC). Acicular magnetite (Fe3O4) was prepared either by reducing hydrogoethite (magnetite route) or dehydroxylating hydrogoethite to hematite and then reducing it to magnetite (hematite- magnetite route). According to TEM studies, preferential dehydroxylation of hydrogoethite along < 010 > leads to microporous hematite. Maghemite (gamma -Fe2O3 (-) (delta), 0 < < 0.25) was obtained by reoxidation of magnetite. The micropores are retained during the topotactic transformation to magnetite and finally to maghemite, whereas cylindrical mesopores are formed due to rearrangement of the oxygen sublattice from hexagonal to cubic close packing during the conversion of hydrogoethite to magnetite and then to maghemite. Accordingly, three different types of maghemite particles are realized: strongly oriented multicrystalline particles, single crystalline acicular particles with micropores or crystallites having mesopores. Higher values of saturation magnetization ((s) = 74 emu g(-1)) and coercivity (H-c = 320 Oe) are obtained for single crystalline mesoporous particles. In the other cases, the smaller size of particles and larger distribution of micropores decreases sigma (s) considerably ( < 60 emu g(-1)) due to relaxation effects of spins on the surface atoms as revealed by Mossbauer spectroscopy.

Functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are coated with a 4-5 nm thin layer of V(2)O(5) by controlled hydrolysis of vanadium alkoxide. The resulting V(2)O(5)/CNT composite has been investigated for electrochemical activity with lithium ion, and the capacity value shows both faradaic and capacitive (nonfaradaic) contributions. At high rate (1 C), the capacitive behavior dominates the intercalation as 2/3 of the overall capacity value out of 2700 C/g is capacitive, while the remaining is due to Li-ion intercalation. These numbers are in agreement with the Trasatti plots and are corroborated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies on the V(2)O(5)/CNTs electrode, which show 85% of vanadium in the +4 oxidation state after the discharge at 1 C rate. The cumulative high-capacity value is attributed to the unique property of the nano V(2)O(5)/CNTs composite, which provides a short diffusion path for Lit-ions and an easy access to vanadium redox centers besides the high conductivity of CNTs. The composite architecture exhibits both high power density and high energy density, stressing the benefits of using carbon substrates to design high performance supercapacitor electrodes.

High-quality self-assembled V(2)O(5) nanofiber-bundles (NBs) are synthesized by a simple and direct hydrothermal method using a vanadium(V) hydroxylamido complex as a vanadium source in the presence of HNO(3). The possible reaction pathway for the formation of V(2)O(5) NBs is discussed and demonstrated that HNO(3) functions both as an oxidizing and as an acidification agent. V(2)O(5) NBs are single-crystals of an orthorhombic phase that have grown along the [010] direction. A bundle is made of indefinite numbers of homogeneous V(2)O(5) nanofibers where nanofibers have lengths up to several micrometres and widths ranging between 20 and 50 nm. As-prepared V(2)O(5) NBs display a high electrochemical performance in a non-aqueous electrolyte as a cathode material for lithium ion batteries. Field emission properties are also investigated which shows that a low turn-on field of similar to 1.84 V mu m(-1) is required to draw the emission current density of 10 mu Lambda cm(-2).

3-(2,3-Dimethoxyphenyl)-1-(pyridin-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-one (DMPP) a potential second harmonic generating (SHG) has been synthesized and grown as a single crystal by the slow evaporation technique at ambient temperature. The structure determination of the grown crystal was done by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. DMPP crystallizes with orthorhombic system with cell parameters a = 20.3106(8)angstrom, b = 4.9574(2)angstrom, c = 13.4863(5)angstrom, alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 90 degrees, gamma = 90 degrees and space group Pca2(1). The crystals were characterized by FT-IR, thermal analysis, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and SHG measurements. Various functional groups present in DMPP were ascertained by FTIR analysis. DMPP is thermally stable up to 80 degrees C and optically transparent in the visible region. The crystal exhibits SHG efficiency comparable to that of KDP. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Bending at the valence angle N-C-alpha-C' (tau) is a known control feature for attenuating the stability of the rare intramolecular hydrogen bonded pseudo five-membered ring C-5 structures, the so called 2.0(5) helices, at Aib. The competitive 3(10)-helical structures still predominate over the C5 structures at Aib for most values of tau. However at Aib*, a mimic of Aib where the carbonyl 0 of Aib is replaced with an imidate N (in 5,6-dihydro-4H-1,3-oxazine = Oxa), in the peptidomimic Piv-Pro-Aib*-Oxa (1), the C(5)i structure is persistent in both crystals and in solution. Here we show that the i -> i hydrogen bond energy is a more determinant control for the relative stability of the C5 structure and estimate its value to be 18.5 +/- 0.7 kJ/mol at Aib* in 1, through the computational isodesmic reaction approach, using two independent sets of theoretical isodesmic reactions. The temperature (300-973K) and frequency (100Hz-10MHz) response of the dielectric and impedance characteristics of 2BaO-0.5Na(2)O-2.5Nb(2)O(5)-4.5B(2)O(3) glasses and glass nanocrystal composites were studied. The dielectric constant of the glass was found to be almost independent of frequency (100Hz-10MHz) and temperature (300-600K). The temperature coefficient of dielectric constant was 8 +/- 3ppm/K in the 300-600K temperature range. The relaxation and conduction phenomena were rationalized using modulus formalism and universal AC conductivity exponential power law, respectively. The observed relaxation behavior was found to be thermally activated. The complex impedance data were fitted using the least square method. Dispersion of Barium Sodium Niobate (BNN) phase at nanoscale in a glass matrix resulted in the formation of space charge around crystal-glass interface, leading to a high value of effective dielectric constant especially for the samples heat-treated at higher temperatures. The fabricated glass nanocrystal composites exhibited P versus E hysteresis loops at room temperature and the remnant polarization (P-r) increased with the increase in crystallite size.

The gas-phase infrared spectra of 1,2-ED and 1,4-BD have been, recorded at three different temperatures using a multipass gas cell of 6 m optical path length. DFT calculation has also been carried out using 6-311++G** and aug-cc-pVDZ basis sets to look for the existence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding, in them from the red shift and infrared absorption intensity enhancement of the bonded O-H band compared to that of the free O-H hand. Equilibrium population analysis With 10 conformers of 1,2-ED and 1,4-BD at experimental temperatures were-carried out for the reconstruction of the Observed vibrational spectra at that temperature, using standard statistical relationships. The most abundant conformer at experimental temperatures, was identified. In 1,2-ED a red shift of 45 cm(-1) in the intramolecularly interacting O-H stretching vibrational band position and no significant intensity enhancement compared to that of-the free O-H have been observed. On the contrary, in one of the hydrogen bonded conformers of 1,4-BD, a 124 cm(-1) red shift in the O-H stretching frequency and 8.5 times-intensity enhancement for the ``bonded'' O-H compared to that of the ``free'' O-H is seen. On the basis of this comparative study, we have concluded that strong intramolecular hydrogen bonding exists in 1,4-BD. But there appears, to be weak intramolecular hydrogen bonding in 1,2-ED at temperatures of 303, 313, and 323 Km the gas phase We have found that most stable hydrogen-bonded conformers of 1,4-BD are less populated than some of the non-hydrogen-bonded conformers. Even for the 1,4-BD, the relative population of the g'GG'Gt conformer, which has a strong intramolecular, hydrogen bond, is less than what is predicted. Perhaps the intramolecular hydrogen bond plays a less Significant role in the relative stability,of the various Conformers than what has been predicted from calculations and prevails in the literature.

Immune responses during fungal infections are predominately mediated by 5/15-lipoxygenases (LO)-or cyclooxygenase (COX)-2-catalysed bioactive eicosanoid metabolites like leukotrienes, lipoxins and prostaglandins. Although few host mediators of fungi-triggered eicosanoid production have been established, the molecular mechanism of expression and regulation of 5-LO, 15-LO and COX-2 are not well-defined. Here, we demonstrate that, macrophages infected with representative fungi Candida albicans, Aspergillus flavus or Aspergillus fumigatus or those treated with Curdlan, a selective agonist of pattern recognition receptor for fungi Dectin-1, displays increased expression of 5-LO, 15-LO and COX-2. Interestingly, Dectin-1-responsive Syk pathway activates mTOR-sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling cascade to stimulate the expression of these lipid metabolizing enzymes. Loss-of-function analysis of the identified intermediaries indicates that while Syk-mTOR-SHH pathway-induced 5-LO and 15-LO suppressed the Dectin-l-responsive pro-inflammatory signature cytokines like TNE-alpha, IL-1 beta and IL-12, Syk-mTOR-SHH-induced COX-2 positively regulated these cytokines. Dectin-1-stimulated IL-6, however, is dependent on 5-LO, 15-LO and COX-2 activity. Together, the current study establishes Dectin-1-arbitrated host mediators that direct the differential regulation of immune responses during fungal infections and thus are potential candidates of therapeutic intervention. The preparation and direct observation of triplet 2,4-dimethylene-1,3- cyclobutanediyl (1), the non-Kekule isomer of benzene, is described. The biradical was generated by photolysis of 5,6-dimethylene-2,3- diazabicyclo[2.1.1]hex-2-ene (2) (which was synthesized in several steps from benzvalene) under cryogenic, matrix-isolation conditions. Biradical 1 was characterized by EPR spectroscopy (‌‌‌‌‌│D/hc│ =0.0204 cm^(-1), │E/hc│ =0.0028 cm^(-1)) and found to have a triplet ground state. The Δm_s= 2 transition displays hyperfine splitting attributed to a 7.3-G coupling to the ring methine and a 5.9-G coupling to the exocyclic methylene protons. Several experiments, including application of the magnetophotoselection (mps) technique in the generation of biradical 1, have allowed a determination of the zero-field triplet sublevels as x = -0.0040, y = +0.0136, and z = -0.0096 cm^(-1), where x and y are respectively the long and short in-plane axes and z the out-of-plane axis of 1.

Triplet 1 is yellow-orange and displays highly structured absorption (λ_(max)= 506 nm) and fluorescence (λ_(max) = 510 nm) spectra, with vibronic spacings of 1520 and 620 cm^(-1) for absorption and 1570 and 620 cm^(-1) for emission. The spectra were unequivocally assigned to triplet 1 by the use of a novel technique that takes advantage of the biradical's photolability. The absorption є = 7200 M^(-1) cm^(-1) and f = 0.022, establishing that the transition is spin-allowed. Further use of the mps technique has demonstrated that the transition is x-polarized, and the excited state 1s therefore of B_(1g) symmetry, in accord with theoretical predictions.

Thermolysis or direct photolysis of diazene 2 in fluid solution produces 2,4- dimethylenebicyclo[l.l.0]butane (3), whose ^(l)H NMR spectrum (-80°C, CD_(2)Cl_(2)) consists of singlets at δ 4.22 and 3.18 in a 2:1 ratio. Compound 3 is thermally unstable and dimerizes with second-order kinetics between -80 and -25°C (∆H^(‡) = 6.8 kcal mol^(-1), (∆s^(‡) = -28 eu) by a mechanism involving direct combination of two molecules of 3 in the rate-determining step. This singlet-manifold reaction ultimately produces a mixture of two dimers, 3,8,9- trimethylenetricyclo[5.1.1.0^(2,5)]non-4-ene (75) and trans-3,10-dimethylenetricyclo[6.2.0.0^(2,5)]deca-4,8-diene (76t), with the former predominating. In contrast, triplet-sensitized photolysis of 2, which leads to triplet 1, provides, in addition to 75 and 76t, a substantial amount of trans-5,10- dimethylenetricyclo[6.2.0.0^(3,6)]deca-3,8-diene (77t) and small amounts of two unidentified dimers.

In addition, triplet biradical 1 ring-closes to 3 in rigid media both thermally (77-140 K) and photochemically. In solution 3 forms triplet 1 upon energy transfer from sensitizers having relatively low triplet energies. The implications of the thermal chemistry for the energy surfaces of the system are discussed.

In order to determine the properties of the bicycloheptatrienyl anion (Ia) (predicted to be conjugatively stabilized by Hückel Molecular Orbital Theory) the neutral precursor, bicyclo[3. 2. 0] hepta-1, 4, 6-triene (I) was prepared by the following route.

Reaction of I with potassium-t-butoxide, potassium, or lithium dicyclohexylamide gave anion Ia in very low yield. Reprotonation of I was found to occur solely at the 1 or 5 position to give triene II, isolated as to its dimers.

A study of the acidity of I and of other conjugated hydrocarbons by means of ion cyclotron resonance spectroscopy resulted in determination of the following order of relative acidities:

H2S ˃ C5H6 ˃ CH3NO2 ˃ 1, 4- C5H8 ˃ I ˃ C2H5OH ˃ H2O; cyclo-C7H8 ˃ C2 H5OH; фCH3 ˃ CH3OH

In addition, limits for the proton affinities of the conjugate bases were determined:

350 kcal/mole ˂ PA(C5 H5-) ˂ 360 kcal/mole

362 kcal/mole ˂ PA(C5H7-, Ia, cyclo-C7H7-) ˂ 377 kcal/mole PA(фCH2-) ˂ 385 kcal/mole

Gas phase kinetics of the trans-XVIII to I transformation gave the following activation parameters: Ea = 43.0 kcal/mole, log A = 15.53 and ∆Sǂ (220°) = 9.6 cu. The results were interpreted as indicating initial 1,2 bond cleavage to give the 1,3-diradical which closed to I. Similar studies on cis-XVIII gave results consistent with a surface component to the reaction (Ea = 22.7 kcal/mole; log A = 9.23, ∆Sǂ (119°) = -18.9 eu).

The low pressure (0.01 to 1 torr) pyrolysis of trans-XVIII gave in addition to I, fulvenallene (LV), ethynylcyclopentadiene (LVI) and heptafulvalene (LVII). The relative ratios of the C7H6 isomers were found to be dependent upon temperature and pressure, higher relative pressure and lower temperatures favoring formation of I. The results were found to be consistent with the intermediacy of vibrationally excited I and subsequent reaction to give LV and LVI.
