Dynamic contrast-enhanced and diffusion-weighted MRI for early detection of tumoral changes in single-dose and fractionated radiotherapy: evaluation in a rat rhabdomyosarcoma model

We aimed to examine different intratumoral changes after single-dose and fractionated radiotherapy, using diffusion-weighted (DW) and dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI in a rat rhabdomyosarcoma model. Four WAG/Rij rats with rhabdomyosarcomas in the flanks received single-dose radiotherapy of 8 Gy, and four others underwent fractionated radiotherapy (five times 3 Gy). In rats receiving single-dose radiotherapy, a significant perfusion decrease was found in the first 2 days post-treatment, with slow recuperation afterwards. No substantial diffusion changes could be seen; tumor growth delay was 12 days. The rats undergoing fractionated radiotherapy showed a similar perfusion decrease early after the treatment. However, a very strong increase in apparent diffusion coefficient occurred in the first 10 days; growth delay was 18 days. DW-MRI and DCE-MRI can be used to show early tumoral changes induced by radiotherapy. Single-dose and fractionated radiotherapy induce an immediate perfusion effect, while the latter induces more intratumoral necrosis.

Magnetic anisotropy in clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene single crystals

Pyroxenes constitute an important component in mafic igneous and metamorphic rocks. They often possess a prismatic habit, and their long axis, the crystallographic c axis, helps define a lineation in a textured rock. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) serves as a fabric indicator in igneous and metamorphic rocks. If a rock’s AMS is carried by pyroxenes, it can be related to their crystallographic preferred orientation and degree of alignment. This requires knowing the intrinsic AMS of pyroxene single crystals. This study provides a comprehensive low-field and high-field AMS investigation of chemically diverse orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene crystals in relation to crystal structure, chemical composition, oxidation state of Fe, and the possible presence of ferromagnetic inclusions. The paramagnetic anisotropy, extracted from high-field data, shows clear relationships to crystallographic directions and Fe concentration both in clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene. In the diopside-augite series, the intermediate susceptibility is parallel to b, and the maximum is at 45° to the c axis. In aegirine, the intermediate axis remains parallel to b, while the maximum susceptibility is parallel to c. The AMS of spodumene depends on Fe concentration. In enstatite, the maximum susceptibility aligns with c and the minimum with b, and in the case of hypersthene, the maximum susceptibility is normal to the exsolution lamellae. Magnetite inclusions within augite possess a ferromagnetic anisotropy with consistent orientation of the principal susceptibilities, which dominates the low-field anisotropy. These results provide better understanding of magnetic anisotropy in pyroxenes and form a solid basis for interpretation of magnetic fabrics in pyroxene-bearing rocks.

Prevalence and management of familial hypercholesterolaemia in patients with acute coronary syndromes.

AIMS We aimed to assess the prevalence and management of clinical familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) among patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). METHODS AND RESULTS We studied 4778 patients with ACS from a multi-centre cohort study in Switzerland. Based on personal and familial history of premature cardiovascular disease and LDL-cholesterol levels, two validated algorithms for diagnosis of clinical FH were used: the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network algorithm to assess possible (score 3-5 points) or probable/definite FH (>5 points), and the Simon Broome Register algorithm to assess possible FH. At the time of hospitalization for ACS, 1.6% had probable/definite FH [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.3-2.0%, n = 78] and 17.8% possible FH (95% CI 16.8-18.9%, n = 852), respectively, according to the Dutch Lipid Clinic algorithm. The Simon Broome algorithm identified 5.4% (95% CI 4.8-6.1%, n = 259) patients with possible FH. Among 1451 young patients with premature ACS, the Dutch Lipid Clinic algorithm identified 70 (4.8%, 95% CI 3.8-6.1%) patients with probable/definite FH, and 684 (47.1%, 95% CI 44.6-49.7%) patients had possible FH. Excluding patients with secondary causes of dyslipidaemia such as alcohol consumption, acute renal failure, or hyperglycaemia did not change prevalence. One year after ACS, among 69 survivors with probable/definite FH and available follow-up information, 64.7% were using high-dose statins, 69.0% had decreased LDL-cholesterol from at least 50, and 4.6% had LDL-cholesterol ≤1.8 mmol/L. CONCLUSION A phenotypic diagnosis of possible FH is common in patients hospitalized with ACS, particularly among those with premature ACS. Optimizing long-term lipid treatment of patients with FH after ACS is required.

La imagen de España en las Aguafuertes españolas de Roberto Arlt

En la vida de Roberto Arlt, el periodismo ocupó un lugar de preeminencia como medio de vida, como expresión de ideas y como vehículo para reflejar la intrahistoria ciudadana. Si bien el mayor volumen de Aguafuertes están dedicadas al hacer y acontecer porteños, una buena cantidad fueron escritas como crónicas de viaje. Entre febrero de 1935 y mayo de 1936 Roberto Arlt concretó su ansiado viaje a Europa en el cual recorrió ciudades de España y África. Desde los distintos lugares que visita manda sus artículos al diario El Mundo con el nombre de Aguafuertes españolas. El propósito de este trabajo es relevar en este conjunto de escritos - que constituyen una colección de artículos político-costumbristas a la vez que un diario de viaje del autor- la idiosincracia española en los prolegómenos de la Guerra Civil, a través de la mirada perspicaz e irónica de este extranjero.

Horizontal profiles of longwave and shortwave radiation components over sea ice near Barrow, Alaska during the 2011 melt

An integrated instrument package for measuring and understanding the surface radiation budget of sea ice is presented, along with results from its first deployment. The setup simultaneously measures broadband fluxes of upwelling and downwelling terrestrial and solar radiation (four components separately), spectral fluxes of incident and reflected solar radiation, and supporting data such as air temperature and humidity, surface temperature, and location (GPS), in addition to photographing the sky and observed surface during each measurement. The instruments are mounted on a small sled, allowing measurements of the radiation budget to be made at many locations in the study area to see the effect of small-scale surface processes on the large-scale radiation budget. Such observations have many applications, from calibration and validation of remote sensing products to improving our understanding of surface processes that affect atmosphere-snow-ice interactions and drive feedbacks, ultimately leading to the potential to improve climate modelling of ice-covered regions of the ocean. The photographs, spectral data, and other observations allow for improved analysis of the broadband data. An example of this is shown by using the observations made during a partly cloudy day, which show erratic variations due to passing clouds, and creating a careful estimate of what the radiation budget along the observed line would have been under uniform sky conditions, clear or overcast. Other data from the setup's first deployment, in June 2011 on fast ice near Point Barrow, Alaska, are also shown; these illustrate the rapid changes of the radiation budget during a cold period that led to refreezing and new snow well into the melt season.

La sexualidad psicoanalítica y los avatares de su interpretación por los colectivos de diversidad y género

El presente trabajo se presenta como un avance del Proyecto de investigación acreditado en el Programa de incentivos denominado 'La responsabilidad del sujeto en el campo del Psicoanálisis. Sexuación femenina y sexuación masculina'. En el mismo me propongo realizar un conjunto de reflexiones acerca del tema siempre complejo de losavatares del sujeto a partir de su determinismo estructural sexuado, el paradojal sentido de los no saberes que determinan el posicionamiento como hombre y mujer, así como la variedad de posibles relaciones entre los mismos, además deponer en situación dicha constitución subjetiva con los actuales planteos de las orientaciones de los colectivos de género, entre otros. A partir de ello se intenta poner en situación la responsabilidad subjetiva, que interpelamos habitualmente en los consultorios, es decir la responsabilidad ética de ese sujeto en relación a su deseo inconsciente que lo pone y quizás 'dispone' para el acto analítico. Resulta de plena actualidad analizar el discurso de los colectivos de género, a la luz del conjunto de reivindicaciones políticas que realizan sus grupos de vanguardia. El discurso de los mismos había quedado engrampado durante muchos años en la trampa del esencialismo dualista, que lo enfrentaba a categorías de hombre, mujer, masculino o femenino, patriarcado o matriarcado, etc. que pulía radicalmente las complejas aristas de la constitución de subjetividad. Los estudios sobre la sexualidad del psicoanálisis fue un continuoreferente para dichos colectivos, pero se piensa que no selogró captar desde un principio la potencialidad de argumentación casi revolucionaria que presentaban los mismos, quedando reducidos a una crítica reduccionista del planteo al que denominaron falocentrismo, una concepción biologizada de la teoría de la falta en ser constitutiva de lo humano. La dificultad de aprehensión de una realidad como la psíquica de naturaleza sexual, orientada por una falta en ser constitutiva y estructural, rompe con el modelo de las categorías de fuerte raigambre en los colectivos tales como el de identidad, hombre, mujer, poder, etc.De las apreciaciones y desarrollos se desprende que buena parte de los estudios sobre feminismo, género, etc. existe una matriz disciplinar común que pule las enriquecedoras aristas de la singularidad propia de los desarrollos del psicoanálisis que ellos mismos referencian, demarcando direccionalidades y determinaciones sociales en la orientación sexual, que ponen a distancia la falta en ser constitutiva de la subjetividad. A partir de lo anterior dichos enfoques se convierten en simples revisiones críticas de viejos modelos sociales, lingüísticos, discursivos, políticos, etc. La circulación discursiva con el Psicoanálisis se piensa que posibilitará que estos colectivos reactualicen su doctrina que quedó coaligada con la lectura genital del falo, desprendiéndose de allí una lectura sesgada por una ideología de dominancias que no son tales. Así el realizar un conjunto de reflexiones respecto al derrotero histórico que han seguido estos movimientos en la imposibilidad de adecuar a sus reivindicaciones y luchas sociales, aportes importantes del aparato teórico del Psicoanálisis de base freudiana y lacaniana, se piensa que colaborará al debate que se reactualiza, a partir que alguna de esas luchas han logrado fuerte impacto y éxito en el campo socio legal. Ultimamente algunos autores tales como Judith Butler realizan una aplicación de la teoría psicoanalítica sobre todo de base lacaniana, encontrando sobrados argumentos de base para el análisis, dando sustento teórico al discurso de los colectivos
