The isothermal kinetics of Ag precipitation was studied in Cu-Al-Ag alloys with concentrations ranging from 2 to 8 wt.%Al and 2 to 12 wt.%Ag, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) and microhardness measurements. The results indicated a change in the precipitates growing mechanism from diffusion to interface controlled process, probably due to a change in the nature of the interface with the Ag and Al enrichment of the precipitates. Background. Hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is a rare malignant tumor of vascular origin with frequent multifocal appearance. Liver resection may cause tumor spread. Liver transplantation has been indicated for unresectable nodules. We hypothesized that adjuvant interferon treatment is effective to prevent metastasis after liver resection. We report a case of multifocal hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma successfully treated with interferon pulse therapy and bilobar hepatic resection.Methodology. CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging diagnosed three nodules in the liver (segments IV, VI and VII). Histopathology and specific immunostaining of a percutaneous nodule biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma. The treatment protocol included daily interferon alpha 2b 9 weeks before and 1 week after resection of liver segments IV, VI and VII.Results. The postoperative outcome was complicated by a self-limited biliary fistula. The patient remains tumor free at 3 years after liver resection and currently enjoys excellent health.Conclusion. Interferon pulse therapy and hepatic resection was a good option to treat multifocal bilobar hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma; it may prevent metastasis dissemination.

Purpose: To evaluate the macroscopy, microstructure, and tissue reaction of a double-setting a-tricalcium phosphate bone cement used as an intraocular implant in rabbits. Methods: the internal and external surface of the double-setting a-tricalcium phosphate implant was analyzed macroscopically and by scanning electron microscopy. Twelve New Zealand rabbits received 12-mm implants made of double-setting alpha-tricalcium phosphate cement after unilateral evisceration. Clinical evaluation was performed daily for the first 15 days after surgery and at 15-day intervals until the end of the study period. For histopathologic analysis, 3 animals per experimental period were submitted to enucleation at 15, 45, 90, and 180 days. Results: on gross inspection, the external surface of the implant was solid, smooth, and compact. The microarchitecture was characterized by the formation of columns of hexagonal crystals with interconnecting channels forming micropores. No wound dehiscence, signs of infection, or implant extrusion were observed in any animal throughout the study period. Histologic examination revealed the formation of fibrovascular tissue surrounding the implants, and there were signs of minimal integration of the surface limiting the fibrocellular cap with the space previously occupied by the implant. Conclusions: the double-setting alpha-tricalcium phosphate implant behaved as an inert and nonintegratable material. The lack of incorporation of this material by fibrovascular tissue is related to its characteristics of compactness and high resistance.

The effects of Alchornea glandulosa ethyl acetate fraction (AGF) on hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), nitric oxide (NO) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) production in peritoneal macrophages activated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) were investigated. Analysis by thin layer chromatography (TLC) of AGF showed several constituents, including flavonoids, which may have anti-inflammatory activity. Inhibitory effects of the fraction in H2O2 and NO production ranged from 8.59 +/- 7.84% to 70.56 +/- 4.16% and from 16.06 +/- 3.65% to 38.73 +/- 3.90%, respectively. The TNF-alpha production was only partially inhibited in the tested concentrations (12.21 +/- 6.23%-15.16 +/- 0.96%). According to these results, it is suggested that AGF has anti-inflammatory activity. This medicinal plant may have therapeutic potential in the control of inflammatory disorders.

The phase transition from the non-polar a-phase to the polar beta-phase of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) has been investigated using micro-Raman spectroscopy, which is advantageous for being a non-destructive technique. Films of alpha-PVDF were subjected to stretching under controlled rates and at 80 degrees C, the transition to beta-PVDF being monitored by the decrease in the Raman band at 794 cm(-1) characteristic of the a-phase, with the concomitant increase in the 839 cm(-1) band characteristic of the beta-phase. Poling with negative corona discharge was found to affect the alpha-PVDF morphology improving the Raman bands related to this crystalline phase. This effect is minimized for films stretched to higher ratios. Significantly, corona-induced effects could not be observed with the other experimental techniques, viz. X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are effector molecules of innate immune systems found in different groups of organisms, including microorganisms, plants, insects, amphibians and humans. These peptides exhibit several structural motifs but the most abundant AMPs assume an amphipathic alpha-helical structure. The alpha-helix forming antimicrobial peptides are excellent candidates for protein engineering leading to an optimization of their biological activity and target specificity. Nowadays several approaches are available and this review deals with the use of combinatorial synthesis and directed evolution in order to provide a high-throughput source of antimicrobial peptides analogues with enhanced lytic activity and specificity.

In this work the La1.8Eu0.2O3 coating on nanometric alpha-alumina, alpha-Al2O3@La1.8Eu0.2O3, was prepared for the first time by a soft chemical method. The powder was heat-treated at 100, 400, 800 and 1200 degrees C for 2 h. X-ray powder diffraction patterns (XRD), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), emission and excitation spectra, as well as Eu3+, lifetime were used to characterize the material and to follow the changes in structure as the heating temperature increases. The Eu3+ luminescence data revealed the characteristic transitions D-5(0) --> F-7(J) (J = 0, 1 and 3) of Eu3+ at around 580, 591 and 613 nm, respectively, when the powders were excited by 393 nm. The red color of the samples changed to yellow when the powder was annealed at 1200 degrees C. The decrease in the (D-5(0) --> F-7(2))/(D-5(0) --> F-7(1)) ratio from around 5.0 for samples heated at lower temperatures to 3.1 for samples annealed at 1200 degrees C is consistent with a higher symmetry of the Eu3+ at higher temperature. The excitation spectra of the samples also confirms this change by the presence of a more intense and broad band at around 317 nm, instead of the presence of the characteristic peak at 393 mn, which corresponds to the F-7(0) --> L-5(6) transition of the Eu3+. The lifetimes of the D-5(0) --> F-7(2) transition of Eu3+ for the samples heat-treated at 100, 400, 800 and 1200 degrees C was evaluated as 0.57, 0.72, 0.43 and 0.31 ms, respectively. During a study of the LaF3-ZrF4 system, both La3Zr4F25 and alpha-LaZr3F15 compounds have been evidenced. Their crystal structures have been determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. La3Zr4F25 crystallises in the cubic system with a= 12.384 Angstrom and I (4) over bar 3d space group (no. 220). Its crystal structure is built up of (ZrF6)(2-) octahedra and (LaF8)(5-) dodecahedra sharing corners. The low temperature form, alpha, of LaZr3F15 is orthorhombic (space group Pmmn, no. 59) with a = 15.721 Angstrom, b = 16.299 Angstrom, c= 8.438 Angstrom. Its structure is built of corner-sharing tricaped trigonal prisms surrounding the La3+ ions and both octahedra and monocapped trigonal prisms encompassing the Zr4+ ions. This structure is characterised by dynamically disordered (ZrF6)(2-) complex anions. The Eu3+ luminescence properties of these phases have been investigated and are discussed in relationship with their crystal structures.

The rat tail artery has been used for the study of vasoconstriction mediated by alpha(1A)-adrenoceptors (ARs). However, rings from proximal segments of the tail artery (within the initial 4 cm, PRTA) were at least 3- fold more sensitive to methoxamine and phenylephrine (n = 6 - 12; p < 0.05) than rings from distal parts (between the sixth and 10th cm, DRTA). Interestingly, the imidazolines N-[ 5-( 4,5- dihydro- 1H- imidazol-2-yl)-2-hydroxy-5,6,7,8- tetrahydronaphthalen- 1- yl] methanesulfonamide hydrobromide (A-61603) and oxymetazoline, which activate selectively alpha(1A)- ARs, were equipotent in PRTA and DRTA (n = 4 - 12), whereas buspirone, which activates selectively alpha(1D)-AR, was approximate to 70-fold more potent in PRTA than in DRTA (n = 8; p < 0.05). The selective alpha(1D)-AR antagonist 8-[2-[4-(methoxyphenyl)-1-piperazinyl] ethyl]-8-azaspiro[4.5] decane-7,9-dione dihydrochloride (BMY- 7378) was approximate to 70- fold more potent against the contractions induced by phenylephrine in PRTA (pK(B) of approximate to 8.45; n = 6) than in DRTA (pK B of approximate to 6.58; n = 6), although the antagonism was complex in PRTA. 5-Methylurapidil, a selective alpha(1A)-antagonist, was equipotent in PRTA and DRTA (pK(B) of approximate to 8.4), but the Schild slope in DRTA was 0.73 +/- 0.05 ( n = 5). The noncompetitive alpha(1B)-antagonist conotoxin rho-TIA reduced the maximal contraction induced by phenylephrine in DRTA, but not in PRTA. These results indicate a predominant role for alpha(1A)-ARs in the contractions of both PRTA and DRTA but with significant coparticipations of alpha(1D)-ARs in PRTA and alpha(1B)-ARs in DRTA. Semiquantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction revealed that mRNA encoding alpha(1A)- and alpha(1B)-ARs are similarly distributed in PRTA and DRTA, whereas mRNA for alpha(1D)-ARs is twice more abundant in PRTA. Therefore, alpha(1)-ARs subtypes are differentially distributed along the tail artery. It is important to consider the segment from which the tissue preparation is taken to avoid misinterpretations on receptor mechanisms and drug selectivities. antagonism was complex in PRTA. 5- Methylurapidil, a selective alpha(1A)-antagonist, was equipotent in PRTA and DRTA (pK(B) of approximate to 8.4), but the Schild slope in DRTA was 0.73 +/- 0.05 ( n = 5). Background: Rat trachea display a differential topographical distribution of connective tissue mast cells (CTMC) and mucosal mast cells (MMC) that may imply regional differences in the release of allergic mediators such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and eicosanoids.Aim: To evaluate the role of CTMC and MMC for release of TNF-alpha and eicosanoids after allergenic challenge in distinct segments of rat trachea.Materials and methods: Proximal trachea ( PT) and distal trachea (DT) from ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized rats, treated or not with compound 48/80 ( 48/80) or dexamethasone, were incubated in culture medium. After OVA challenge, aliquots were collected to study release of TNF-alpha and eicosanoids. Results: Release of TNF-alpha by PT upon OVA challenge peaked at 90 min and decayed at 6 and 24 h. Release from DT peaked at 30-90 min and decayed 6 and 24 h later. When CTMC were depleted with 48/80, OVA challenge exacerbated the TNF-alpha release by PT at all time intervals, while DT exacerbated TNF-alpha levels 6 and 24 h later only. Dexamethasone reduced TNF-alpha production after 90 min of OVA challenge in PT and at 3 and 6h in DT. OVA challenge increased prostaglandin D-2 in DT and leukotriene B-4 in both segments but did not modify prostaglandin E-2 and leukotriene C-4 release. Conclusion: OVA challenge induces TNF-alpha release from MMC, which is negatively regulated by CTMC. The profile of TNF-alpha and eicosanoids depends on the time after OVA challenge and of the tracheal segment considered.

This paper explains the conceptual design of instrumentation that measures electric quantities defined in the Std. 1459-2000. It is shown how the instantaneous-space-phasor approach, based on alpha, beta, 0 components, can be used to monitor electric energy flow, evaluate the utilization of transmission line, and quantify the level of harmonic pollution injected by nonlinear loads.

The ability of the conotoxin p-TIA, a 19-amino acid peptide isolated from the marine snail Conus tulipa, to antagonize contractions induced by noradrenaline through activation of alpha(1A)-adrenoceptors in rat vas deferens, alpha(1B)-adrenoceptors in rat spleen and alpha(ID)-adrenoceptors in rat aorta, and to inhibit the binding of [I-125]HEAT (2-[[beta-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethyl]aminomethyl]-1-tetralone) to membranes of human embryonic kidney (HEK) 293 cells expressing each of the recombinant rat alpha(1)-adrenoceptors was investigated. p-TIA (100 nM to 1 muM) antagonized the contractions of vas deferens and aorta in response to noradrenaline without affecting maximal effects and with similar potencies (pA(2)similar to7.2, n=4). This suggests that p-TIA is a competitive antagonist of alpha(1A)- and alpha(1D)-adrenoceptors with no selectivity between these subtypes. Incubation of p-TIA (30 to 300 nM) with rat spleen caused a significant reduction of the maximal response to noradrenaline, suggesting that p-TIA is a non-competitive antagonist at alpha(1B)-adrenoceptors. After receptor inactivation with phenoxybenzamine, the potency of p-TIA in inhibiting contractions was examined with similar occupancies (similar to25%) at each subtype. Its potency (pIC(50)) was 12 times higher in spleen (8.3 +/- 0.1, n=4) than in vas deferens (7.2 +/- 0.1, n=4) or aorta (7.2 0.1, n=4). In radioligand binding assays, p-TIA decreased the number of binding sites (B,,,,,,) in membranes from HEK293 cells expressing the rat alpha(1B)-adrenoceptors without affecting affinity (K-D), In contrast, in HEK293 cells expressing rat alpha(1A)- or alpha(1D)-adrenoceptors, p-TTA decreased the KD without affecting the B-max. It is concluded that p-TIA will be useful for distinguishing the role of particular alpha(1)-adrenoceptor subtypes in native tissues. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
