Eighty-four sediment samples from four holes at Site 502 and 54 samples from three holes at Site 503 were analyzed for mineral content by semiquantitative X-ray diffraction methods. Site 502 is located in the Western Caribbean, whereas Site 503 lies in the Eastern Pacific (probably on the north flank of the Galapagos Spreading Center). Both sites were chosen to yield continuous core sections for investigations of late Neogene and Quaternary biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy and to study events such as the closing of the Isthmus of Panama. Our X-ray diffraction work should provide a framework for further investigations - for example, determination of climatic changes in relationship to clay mineral composition or the influx of terrigeneous sediment components from South America before and after development of the Panama landbridge.

Holes 572C and 573A provide high resolution (about 5000-yr. sampling interval) records of oxygen and carbon isotope stratigraphy (Globigerinoides sacculifera) and carbonate stratigraphy for the Pliocene of the equatorial Pacific. These data enable detailed correlation of carbonate events between sites and provide additional resolution to the previous carbonate stratigraphy. Comparison of calcium carbonate and d18O data reveal a "Pacific-type" carbonate stratigraphy throughout the Pliocene. The d18O data have two modes of variability with a boundary at 2.9 Ma. The planktonic d18O record does not have a steplike enrichment at 3.2 Ma, which is observed in benthic records elsewhere, suggesting that this event does not represent the proposed initiation of northern hemispheric glaciation. Hole 572C does record a distinct d18O enrichment event at about 2.4 Ma, which has been previously associated with the onset of major ice rafting in the North Atlantic.

The quartz contents of sediments from Hole 595A, determined by X-ray diffractometry, serve as an indicator of eolian transport of terrigenous material to the central southern Pacific. The quartz contents are very small and, within limits of analytical resolution, vary only slightly from the Cretaceous to the present. However, the accumulation rate of the eolian quartz does change significantly. The quartz accumulation reflects the changing position of the site with respect to the terrigenous source areas and the variations in wind systems through time.

The rate at which hydrothermal precipitates accumulate, as measured by the accumulation rate of manganese, can be used to identify periods of anomalous hydrothermal activity in the past. From a preliminary study of Sites 597 and 598, four periods prior to 6 Ma of anomalously high hydrothermal activity have been identified: 8.5 to 10.5 Ma, 12 to 16 Ma, 17 to 18 Ma, and 23-to-27 Ma. The 18-Ma anomaly is the largest and is associated with the jump in spreading from the fossil Mendoza Ridge to the East Pacific Rise, whereas the 23-to-27-Ma anomaly is correlated with the birth of the Galapagos Spreading Center and resultant ridge reorganization. The 12-to-16-Ma and 8.5-to-10.5-Ma anomalies are correlated with periods of anomalously high volcanism around the rim of the Pacific Basin and may be related to other periods of ridge reorganization along the East Pacific Rise. There is no apparent correlation between periods of fast spreading at 19°S and periods of high hydrothermal activity. We thus suggest that periods when hydrothermal activity and crustal alteration at mid-ocean ridges are the most pronounced may be periods of large-scale ridge reorganization.

Interaction between young basaltic crust and seawater near the oceanic speading centers is one of the important processes affecting the chemical composition of the oceanic layer. The formation of metalliferous hydrothermal sediments results from this interaction. The importance of the interaction between seawater and basalt in determining the chemical composition of pore waters from sediments is well known. The influence of mineral solutions derived from this interaction on ocean water composition and the significant flux of some elements (e.g., Mn) are reported by Lyle (1976), Bogdanov et al. (1979), and others. Metal-rich sediments found in active zones of the ocean basins illustrate the influence of seawater-basalt interaction and its effect on the sedimentary cover in such areas. The role of hydrothermal activity and seawater circulation in basalts with regard to global geochemistry cycles has recently been demonstrated by Edmond, Measures, McDuff, McDuff et al. (1979), and Edmond, Measures, Mangum (1979). In the area of the Galapagos Spreading Center the interaction of sediments and solutions derived from interaction of seawater and basalt has resulted in the formation of hydrothermal mounds. The mounds are composed of manganese crusts and green clay interbedded and mixed with pelagic nannofossil ooze. These mounds are observed only in areas characterized by high heat flow (Honnorez, et al., 1981) and high hydrothermal activity.

A quantitative study of late Cenozoic silicoflagellates from the northwestern Pacific sites of Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 86 shows a relative paleotemperature (Ts) gradient with lowest values (Ts = 30) in the north. Some new ecostratigraphic relations for the region are indicated, such as the last common occurrence of Dictyocha brevispina at 2.6 - 3.0 m.y. ago during a cool interval. Elements of North Pacific and low-latitude biostratigraphic zonations can be identified, but the mixing of cool- and warm-indicator taxa prompted the definition of the new Miocene Mesocena hexalitha Subzone and Pliocene Distephanus jimlingii Subzone. Scanning-electron microscope study of Leg 86 silicoflagellates was done to determine whether various types of skeletal surface texture are temperature dependent. To conduct the study we organized a new surface-texture descriptive code, which characterizes the apical structure/basal ring/spine sequence using new definitions of the terms crenulate (C), linear (L), nodular (N), reticulate (R), and smooth (S). One new silicoflagellate genus, Caryocha Bukry et Monechi, n. gen., is described and several new combinations are made.

Carbon isotope measurements were made on bulk sediments from the well preserved calcareous sequences recovered at ODP Sites 689 and 690 on the Maud Rise, Weddell Sea, Antarctica. The very positive delta13C values that characterize the late Paleocene and the rapid trend toward lighter values in the early Eocene established in other sites are clearly recorded here and may be of value for long-distance stratigraphic correlation. However, values in the late Eocene are significantly more positive than have been reported from other areas. The general pattern of the records from Sites 689 and 690 is sufficiently unlike those previously reported from lower latitudes that we suggest that carbon isotope data should be used only with considerable caution for correlating sequences from such high latitudes with lower latitude records.

A detailed paleomagnetic study was carried out on biosiliceous and calcareous sediments drilled on Maud Rise, Antarctica, during ODP Leg 113. High-quality APC sections were retrieved in the upper 220 m of Holes 689B and 690B. Average deposition rates range from 3 to 15 m/m.y. A close (25 cm) paleomagnetic sample spacing provided a medium-resolution magnetostratigraphic sequence for the Paleogene and Neogene. Paleomagnetic samples were demagnetized stepwise by alternating fields, and characteristic remanent magnetization directions were derived from detailed vector and difference vector component analysis. A magnetochronologic framework has been established for the first time for the Southern Ocean sedimentary sequences spanning Paleocene to Oligocene and middle Miocene to early Pliocene times. Biosiliceous and calcareous microfossil stratigraphies were used to constrain magnetostratigraphic age assignments. Although average sedimentation rates were rather low, nearly complete sections of the geomagnetic polarity time scale (e.g., Chrons C5 and C5A) could be correlated with the inferred polarity pattern. Miocene and Pliocene records are marked by a high number of hiatuses mainly identified by diatom biostratigraphy. Good paleomagnetic correlation between the two holes is afforded in particular in the middle to upper Miocene. Oligocene magnetostratigraphy reveals a high-quality paleomagnetic record with a mostly complete Oligocene section in Hole 689B at ~5 m/m.y. deposition rate. Hole 690B exhibits higher deposition rates (7-12 m/m.y.), although two hiatuses are present. Early and late Eocene sedimentary sequences could be analyzed in both holes, but in Hole 689B middle Eocene chrons were disrupted by hiatuses and only incomplete polarity intervals C21 and C24 were encountered. Highest resolution (14 m/m.y.) was achieved in Hole 690B in a complete early Eocene and late Paleocene sequence from Chrons C23 to C26, with a number of short polarity intervals detected within Chrons C24 and C25.
