Microwave (MW)-assisted cellulose dissolution in ionic liquids (ILs) has routinely led either to incomplete biopolymer solubilization, or its degradation. We show that these problems can be avoided by use of low-energy MW heating, coupled with efficient stirring. Dissolution of microcrystalline cellulose in the IL 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride has been achieved without changing its degree of polymerization; regenerated cellulose showed pronounced changes in its index of crystallinity, surface area, and morphology. MW-assisted functionalization of MCC by ethanoic, propanoic, butanoic, pentanoic, and hexanoic anhydrides has been studied. Compared with conventional heating, MW irradiation has resulted in considerable decrease in dissolution and reaction times. The value of the degree of substitution (DS) was found to be DS(ethanoate) > DS(propanoate) > DS(butanoate). The values of DS(pentanoate) and DS(hexanoate) were found to be slightly higher than DS(ethanoate). This surprising dependence on the chain length of the acylating agent has been reported before, but not rationalized. On the basis of the rate constants and activation parameters of the hydrolysis of ethanoic, butanoic, and hexanoic anhydrides in aqueous acetonitrile (a model acyl transfer reaction), we suggest that this result may be attributed to the balance between two opposing effects, namely, steric crowding and (cooperative) hydrophobic interactions between the anhydride and the cellulosic surface, whose lipophilicity has increased, due to its partial acylation. Four ethanoate-based mixed esters were synthesized by the reaction with a mixture of the two anhydrides; the ethanoate moiety predominated in all products. The DS is reproducible and the IL is easily recycled. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 134-143, 2010

Secas extremas, inundações, furacões, pessoas que perderam suas casas, suas plantações, seus animais, sua fé. Essa é a realidade enfrentada por brasileiros em diversas regiões do País. A causa? As mudanças do clima. Ionic liquids (ILs) are organic compounds liquid at room temperature, good electrical conductors, with the potential to form as a means for electrolyte on electrolysis of water, in which the electrodes would not be subjected to such extreme conditions demanding chemistry [1]. This paper describes the synthesis, characterization and study of the feasibility of ionic liquid ionic liquid 1-methyl-3(2,6-(S)-dimethyloct-2-ene)-imidazole tetrafluoroborate (MDI-BF4) as electrolyte to produce hydrogen through electrolysis of water. The MDI-BF4 synthesized was characterized by thermal methods of analysis (Thermogravimetric Analysis - TG and Differential Scanning Calorimetry - DSC), mid-infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform by method of attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of hydrogen (NMR 1H) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Where thermal methods were used to calculate the yield of the synthesis of MDI-BF4 which was 88.84%, characterized infrared spectroscopy functional groups of the compound and the binding B-F 1053 cm-1; the NMR 1H analyzed and compared with literature data defines the structure of MDI-BF4 and the current density achieved by MDI-BF4 in the voltammogram shows that the LI can conduct electrical current indicating that the MDI-BF4 is a good electrolyte, and that their behavior does not change with the increasing concentration of water

Background: Hyperglycemia, insulin resistance and hyperleptinemia are some of the consequences of obesity. Gastric bypass for morbid obesity provides gastric restriction with decreased energy absorption. To confirm and extend previous reports in the literature, We evaluated the plasma glucose, serum insulin and leptin and insulin resistance of patients preoperatively and 1 and 3 months after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP).Methods: We determined body mass index (BMI), plasma glucose (glucose-oxidase method), serum leptin (immunoassay) and insulin (chemiluminescent immunometric assay), and insulin resistance index (IRI) by Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA) of 20 patients with morbid obesity both preoperatively and 1 and 3 months after RYGBP.Results: Patients showed a mean decrease in weight of 8 kg/month. Glycemia was above reference levels in 65% of the preoperative patients but dropped significantly 1 month postoperatively, serum insulin and leptin levels and the HOMA index also decreasing significantly in the same period. The percentage of patients with preoperative elevated serum insulin and leptin relative to reference levels decreased significantly following RYGBP. We also observed a weak but significant correlation between BMI and glucose, BMI and insulin, and leptin and insulin. Conclusions: the beneficial effects of bariatric surgery are already noticeable 1 month postoperatively, the reduction in insulin levels being more important for leptin reduction than decreased BMI. Leptin appeared to be subject to multifactorial control and showed a larger reduction than body weight.
