Isolate microorganisms that fermenting xylose to ethanol is a challenge to expand production of biofuels from lignocellulosic materials. For this work was tested fermentation of xylose by yeast strains isolated from grape skins (Vitis spp) in order to ethanol produce. The yeasts were grown in submerged fermentation with xylose as a carbohydrate source. Aliquots were taken every 24 hours to measure cell growth, sugar consumption and ethanol production. The yeast had an production ethanol average of 2.5 g / L and yield (Ye / s) 0.12 g / g, showing that they have the ability to produce ethanol from xylose.

The aim of this study was to produce mix beverages of grape juice and soybean hydrosoluble extract (SHE) in laboratory scale. The raw materials were soybean (variety BRS 213), grape (species Vitis labrusca, variety Niagara Rosada), citric pectin, water and sugar. The mix beverage was produced with different proportions of SHE and grape juice (1:1; 1:1.5 and 1:2; respectively; m/m) and different soluble solids concentrations (10, 12 and 14 °Brix) obtained by adding granulated sugar (sucrose). Soybean hydrosoluble extract, grape juice and mix beverages were chemically analyzed (humidity, ash, protein, lipids, carbohydrate, reducing sugars, total reducing sugars, sucrose, titratable acidity and pH). The mix beverages were sensorial analyzed through the acceptance test (hedonic scale). The results of chemically analyzed were expressed as mean and standard deviation and the results of sensorial analyzed were submitted to variance analysis and the means were compared using the Tukey test at 5% of probability. The pH of mix beverages was lower than 3.9, without addition of acidulants. Sugar addition to mix beverages (10; 12 and 14ºBrix) increased the levels of soluble solids, total reducing sugar and carbohydrates, but it did not interfere in the reducing sugar concentration. The increased proportion of grape juice in mix beverages allowed observing the elevation of titratable acidity and reducing sugars levels, as well as the pH reduction. The increase of grape juice in mix beverage did not interfere in the acceptance of mix beverages. The more sweetened beverages were preferred by the sensory panel.

Purpose: To present 7 cases of peripheral sterile corneal infiltrates that occurred after corneal cross-linking (CXL) for progressive keratectasia. Methods: Seven patients who had their progressive keratoconus documented underwent corneal deepithelization and subsequently CXL, which was performed with the application of 0.1% riboflavin with 20% dextran, and exposure to UVA light (370 nm, 2.9-3.1 mW/cm(2)) for 30 minutes. Results: Nearly a week after the procedure, the patients presented with peripheral stromal infiltrates. The ring-like infiltrates were superficial and were present at the 9.0-mm zone. Sterile infiltration was diagnosed. Patients were treated with topical corticosteroids, and complete resolution was achieved after a few weeks of treatment. Conclusions: We hypothesize that the phototoxic effect on the corneal stroma may be the main mechanism that triggers these infiltrates. Alternatively, alterations in antigenicity that occur in native proteins after CXL could result in patients recognizing the proteins as nonself and mounting immune responses.

UVA light (320–400 nm) represents approximately 95% of the total solar UV radiation that reaches the Earth’s surface. UVA light induces oxidative stress and the formation of DNA photoproducts in skin cells. These photoproducts such as pyrimidine dimers (cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers, CPDs, and pyrimidine (6-4) pyrimidone photoproducts, 6-4PPs) are removed by nucleotide excision repair (NER). In this repair pathway, the XPA protein is recruited to the damage removal site; therefore, cells deficient in this protein are unable to repair the photoproducts. The aim of this study was to investigate the involvement of oxidative stress and the formation of DNA photoproducts in UVA-induced cell death. In fact, similar levels of oxidative stress and oxidised bases were detected in XP-A and NER-proficient cells exposed to UVA light. Interestingly, CPDs were detected in both cell lines; however, 6-4PPs were detected only in DNA repairdeficient cells. XP-A cells were also observed to be significantly more sensitive to UVA light compared to NER-proficient cells, with an increased induction of apoptosis, while necrosis was similarly observed in both cell lines. The induction of apoptosis and necrosis in XP-A cells using adenovirus-mediated transduction of specific photolyases was investigated and we confirm that both types of photoproducts are the primary lesions responsible for inducing cell death in XP-A cells and may trigger the skin-damaging effects of UVA light, particularly skin ageing and carcinogenesis.

In realtà sono cresciuto in un giardino, dietro le lance di un cancellata, e in una biblioteca di infiniti volumi inglesi. Quel Palermo del coltello e la chitarra (mi assicurano) era agli angoli delle strade, ma chi popolava le mie mattine e procurava un gradevole orrore alle mie notti erano il bucaniere cieco di Stevenson, agonizzante sotto gli zoccoli dei cavalli, e il traditore che abbandonò l’amico sulla luna, e il viaggiatore del tempo che riportò dal futuro un fiore appassito, e il genio prigioniero per secoli nell’anfora salomonica, e il profeta velato del Khorasan, che dietro le gemme e la seta nascondeva la lebbra. Cosa succedeva, nel frattempo, oltre le lance della cancellata? Quali destini vernacoli e violenti andavano compiendosi a pochi passi da me, nella sordida bettola o nello spazio turbolento? Com’era quel Palermo o come sarebbe stato bello che fosse? A tali domande vuole rispondere questo libro, più d’immaginazione che documentato.” E’ così che Jorge Luis Borges apre il libro Evaristo Carriego, saggio biografico che passò quasi inosservato all’interno degli ambienti intellettuali della capitale dei quali faceva parte lo scrittore stesso. Il libro era dedicato alla figura, estranea a quegli ambienti, del poeta “bohemien, tisico ed anarchico” Evaristo Carriego, vissuto tra otto e novecento nel quartiere Palermo, in quei tempi periferia malfamata di Buenos Aires. Buenos Aires è la città borgesiana per eccellenza: priva di caratteristiche tipologiche precise, volubile allo sguardo, specchio e metafora di tutte le grandi città del mondo. Ma soprattutto Buenos Aires è una città “inventata” da Borges, che le ha dato un’immagine letteraria che si relaziona in maniera complessa con quella reale. Segnerà nell’immaginario di Borges l’inizio e la fine della sua vita, una sorta di centralità, unico stralcio di stabilità, al quale l’inquieta mente dell’argentino possa far ritorno.
