Single photon timing was used to study picosecond chlorophyll a fluorescence decay kinetics of pH induced non-photochemical quenching in spinach photosystem 2 particles. The characteristics of this quenching are a decrease in chlorophyll a fluorescence yield as well as a decrease in photochemistry at low pH. Picosecond kinetics of room temperature fluorescence temporally resolve the individual components of the steady state fluorescence yield into components that are related to primary energy conversion processes in photosystem 2. Four components were resolved for dark adapted (Fo), light saturated (Fm), and chemically reduced (Nadithionite) photosystem 2 reaction centres. The fastest and slowest components, indicative of energy transfer to and energy capture by the photosystem 2 reaction centre and uncoupled ("dead") chlorophyll, respectively, were not affected by changing pH from 6.5 to 4.0. The two intermediate components, indicative of electron transfer processes within the reaction centre of photosystem 2, were affected by the pH change. Results indicate that the decrease in the steady state fluorescence yield at low pH was primarily due to the decrease in lifetime and amplitude of the slower of the intermediate components. These results imply that the decrease in steady state fluorescence yield at low pH is not due to changes in energy transfer to and energy capture by the photosystem 2 reaction centre, but is related to changes in charge stabilization and charge recombination in the photosystem 2 reaction centre.

In the present thesis we have formulated the Dalgarno-Lewis procedure for two-and three-photon processes and an elegant alternate expressions are derived. Starting from a brief review on various multiphoton processes we have discussed the difficulties coming in the perturbative treatment of multiphoton processes. A small discussion on various available methods for studying multiphoton processes are presented in chapter 2. These theoretical treatments mainly concentrate on the evaluation of the higher order matrix elements coming in the perturbation theory. In chapter 3 we have described the use of Dalgarno-Lewis procedure and its implimentation on second order matrix elements. The analytical expressions for twophoton transition amplitude, two-photon ionization cross section, dipole dynamic polarizability and Kramers-Heiseberg are obtained in a unified manner. Fourth chapter is an extension of the implicit summation technique presented in chapter 3. We have clearly mentioned the advantage of our method, especially the analytical continuation of the relevant expressions suited for various values of radiation frequency which is also used for efficient numerical analysis. A possible extension of the work is to study various multiphoton processcs from the stark shifted first excited states of hydrogen atom. We can also extend this procedure for studying multiphoton processes in alkali atoms as well as Rydberg atoms. Also, instead of going for analytical expressions, one can try a complete numerical evaluation of the higher order matrix elements using this procedure.

A socio-economic research is required as an attempt to address the socio-economic issues facing small-scale fisheries. A study of the socio economic conditions of small-scale fishermen is a prerequisite for good design and successful implementation of effective assistance Programmes. It will provide an overall pidure of the structure, activities and standards of living of small-scale fisherfolk The study is confined to the coastal districts of Ernakulam, Thrissur and Malappuram districts. It also gives a picture of socio-economic conditions of the fisher folk in the study area. The variables that may depict the standard of living of the small-scale fisherfolk are occupational structure, family size, age structure, income, expenditure, education, housing and other social amenities. It attempts to see the asset creation of the fisherfolk with the help of government agencies, and the nature of savings and expenditure pattern of the fisherfolk. It also provides a picture of the indebtedness of the fisherfolk in the study area. The study analyses the schemes implemented by the government through its agencies, like Fisheries Department, Matsyaboard, and Matsyafed; and the awareness of fisherfolk regarding these schemes, their attitude and reactions, the extent of accessibility, and the viability of the schemes.

The reforms in Indian banking sector since 1991 is deliberated mostly in terms of the significant measures that were implemented in order to develop a more vibrant, healthy, stable and efficient banking sector in India. The effect of a highly regulated banking environment on asset quality, productivity and performance of banks necessitated the reform process and resulted the incorporation of prudential norms for income recognition, asset classification and provisioning and capital adequacy norms, in line with international best practices. The improvements in asset quality and a reduction in non-performing assets were the primary objective enunciated in the reform measures. In this context, the present research critically evaluates the trend in movement of nonperforming assets of public sector banks in India during the period 2000-01 to 2011-12, thereby facilitates an evaluation of the effectiveness of NPA management in the post-millennium period. The non-performing assets is not a function of loan/advance alone, but is influenced by other bank performance indicators and also by the macroeconomic variables. In addition to explaining the trend in the movement of NPA, this research also explained the moderating and mediating role of various bank performance and macroeconomic indicators on incidence of NPA

A primary objective of agri-environment schemes is the conservation of biodiversity; in addition to increasing the value of farmland for wildlife, these schemes also aim to restore natural ecosystem functioning. The management of scheme options can influence their value for delivering ecosystem services by modifying the composition of floral and faunal communities. This study examines the impact of an agri-environment scheme prescription on ecosystem functioning by testing the hypothesis that vegetation management influences decomposition rates in grassy arable field margins. The effects of two vegetation management practices in arable field margins - cutting and soil disturbance (scarification) - on litter decomposition were compared using a litterbag experimental approach in early April 2006. Bags had either small mesh designed to restrict access to soil macrofauna, or large mesh that would allow macrofauna to enter. Bags were positioned on the soil surface or inserted into the soil in cut and scarified margins, retrieved after 44, 103 and 250 days and the amount of litter mass remaining was calculated. Litter loss from the litterbags with large mesh was greater than from the small mesh bags, providing evidence that soil macrofauna accelerate rates of litter decomposition. In the large mesh bags, the proportion of litter remaining in bags above and belowground in the cut plots was similar, while in the scarified plots, there was significantly more litter left in the aboveground bags than in the belowground bags. This loss of balance between decomposition rates above and belowground in scarified margins may have implications for the development and maintenance of grassy arable field margins by influencing nutrient availability for plant communities. In models of complicated physical-chemical processes operator splitting is very often applied in order to achieve sufficient accuracy as well as efficiency of the numerical solution. The recently rediscovered weighted splitting schemes have the great advantage of being parallelizable on operator level, which allows us to reduce the computational time if parallel computers are used. In this paper, the computational times needed for the weighted splitting methods are studied in comparison with the sequential (S) splitting and the Marchuk-Strang (MSt) splitting and are illustrated by numerical experiments performed by use of simplified versions of the Danish Eulerian model (DEM).

This paper presents results for thermal comfort assessment in non-uniform thermal environments. Three types of displacement ventilation (DV) units that created stratified condition in an environmental test chamber have been selected to carry out the thermal comfort assessment: a flat diffuser (DV1), semi-circular diffuser (DV2), and floor swirl diffuser (DV3). The CBE (Center for the Built Environment at Berkeley) comfort model was implemented in this study to assess the occupant’s thermal comfort for the three DV types. The CBE model predicted the occupant’s mean skin as well as local skin temperatures very well when compared with measurements found in the literature, while it underestimated the occupant’s core temperature. The predicted occupant’s thermal sensation and thermal comfort for the case of (DV2) were the best. Therefore, the semi-circular diffuser (DV2) provided better thermal comfort for the occupant in comparison with the other two DV types.

Global communicationrequirements andloadimbalanceof someparalleldataminingalgorithms arethe major obstacles to exploitthe computational power of large-scale systems. This work investigates how non-uniform data distributions can be exploited to remove the global communication requirement and to reduce the communication costin parallel data mining algorithms and, in particular, in the k-means algorithm for cluster analysis. In the straightforward parallel formulation of the k-means algorithm, data and computation loads are uniformly distributed over the processing nodes. This approach has excellent load balancing characteristics that may suggest it could scale up to large and extreme-scale parallel computing systems. However, at each iteration step the algorithm requires a global reduction operationwhichhinders thescalabilityoftheapproach.Thisworkstudiesadifferentparallelformulation of the algorithm where the requirement of global communication is removed, while maintaining the same deterministic nature ofthe centralised algorithm. The proposed approach exploits a non-uniform data distribution which can be either found in real-world distributed applications or can be induced by means ofmulti-dimensional binary searchtrees. The approachcanalso be extended to accommodate an approximation error which allows a further reduction ofthe communication costs. The effectiveness of the exact and approximate methods has been tested in a parallel computing system with 64 processors and in simulations with 1024 processing element

We establish Maximum Principles which apply to vectorial approximate minimizers of the general integral functional of Calculus of Variations. Our main result is a version of the Convex Hull Property. The primary advance compared to results already existing in the literature is that we have dropped the quasiconvexity assumption of the integrand in the gradient term. The lack of weak Lower semicontinuity is compensated by introducing a nonlinear convergence technique, based on the approximation of the projection onto a convex set by reflections and on the invariance of the integrand in the gradient term under the Orthogonal Group. Maximum Principles are implied for the relaxed solution in the case of non-existence of minimizers and for minimizing solutions of the Euler–Lagrange system of PDE.
