The soft x-ray reflectivity of multilayer films is affected by the surface roughness on the transverse nanometer scale. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is an ideal instrument for providing high-lateral-resolution roughness measurements for soft x-ray multilayer films that cannot be obtained with other types of instruments on the transverse nanometer scale. The surface roughnesses of Mo/Si, Mo/C, and W/Si soft x-ray multilayer films prepared by an ion-beam-sputtering technique were measured with a STM on the vertical and transverse attributes. The film roughnesses and average spatial wavelengths added to the substrates depend on the multilayer film fabrication conditions, i.e., material combinations, number of layers, and individual layer thickness. These were estimated to lead to a loss of specular reflectivity and variations of the soft x-ray scattering angle distribution. This method points the way to further studies of soft x-ray multilayer film functional properties and can be used as basic guidance for selecting the best coating conditions in the fabrications of soft x-ray multilayer films. Hot dip Zn-Al alloy coating performs better than hot dip galvanized coating and 55% Al-Zn-Si coating as well with regard to general seawater corrosion protection. A characterization of the corrosion products on Zn-Al alloy coating immersed in dynamic aerated seawater has been performed mainly based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for morphological analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique for crystalline phase identification. The XRD and TEM analyses showed that the corrosion products mainly were typical nanometer Zn4CO3(OH)(6).H2O, Zn-5(OH)(8)Cl-2 and Zn6Al2CO3(OH)(16). 4H(2)O microcrystals. This probably is connected to the co-precipitation of Zn2+ and Al3+ ions caused by adsorption. Zn-Al alloy coating being suffered seawater attacks, AI(OH)(3) gel was first produced on the coating surface. Zn and Al hydroxides would co-precipitate and form double-hydroxide when the concentration of adsorbed Zn2+ ions by the newly produced gel exceeded the critical degree of supersaturation of the interphase nucleation. However, because the growth of the crystals was too low to keep in step with the nucleation, a layer of nano-crystalline corrosion products were produced on the surface of the coating finally. BACKGROUND: Fibronectin-null cells assemble soluble fibronectin shortly after adherence to a substrate coated with intact fibronectin but not when adherent to the cell-binding domain of fibronectin (modules (7)F3-(10)F3). Interactions of adherent cells with regions of adsorbed fibronectin other than modules (7)F3-(10)F3, therefore, are required for early display of the cell surface sites that initiate and direct fibronectin assembly. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To identify these regions, coatings of proteolytically derived or recombinant pieces of fibronectin containing modules in addition to (7)F3-(10)F3 were tested for effects on fibronectin assembly by adherent fibronectin-null fibroblasts. Pieces as large as one comprising modules (2)F3-(14)F3, which include the heparin-binding and cell adhesion domains, were not effective in supporting fibronectin assembly. Addition of module (1)F3 or the C-terminal modules to modules (2)F3-(14)F3 resulted in some activity, and addition of both (1)F3 and the C-terminal modules resulted in a construct, (1)F3-C, that best mimicked the activity of a coating of intact fibronectin. Constructs (1)F3-C V0, (1)F3-C V64, and (1)F3-C Delta(V(15)F3(10)F1) were all able to support fibronectin assembly, suggesting that (1)F3 through (11)F1 and/or (12)F1 were important for activity. Coatings in which the active parts of (1)F3-C were present in different proteins were much less active than intact (1)F3-C. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that (1)F3 acts together with C-terminal modules to induce display of fibronectin assembly sites on adherent cells.

A new experimental procedure has been implemented and a prototype of a novel adhesion tester has been designed and constructed using rapid prototyping technology. A tumbler mixer has been designed and constructed for coating powder material onto a crisp substrate. In the impact separation experiment, the amount of powder detached from one side of a crisp substrate by the effect of impact forces (48g, 77g, 102g) generated by the tester was measured. Salt particles with different size fractions (63-125, 125-180, and 180-250m) and several flavoring powders have been tested extensively. By plotting the detachment versus impact force, the difference obtained between adhesion strength of different flavoring powders (which is a strong function of particle size and surface oil content of the crisp) has been discussed. The detachment rate of salt particles increased (from 1% to 2%) with particle size (from 63 to 250m) in the presence of oil on the surface of the crisp substrate and decreased rapidly with the increase in the amount of oil applied (from 0 to 1%).

The firm adhesion of flavouring particles onto crisp surfaces during coating processes is a major concern in the snack production industry. Detachment of flavouring powders from products during handling and production stages can lead to substantial financial losses for the industry, in terms of variable flavour performance and extended cleaning down time of fugitive particle build-up on process equipment. Understanding the adhesion strength of applied bulk particulates used for flavouring formulations will help analysts to evaluate the efficiency of coating processes and potentially enable them to assess the adhesion strength of newly formulated flavouring powder prior to commitment to full scale plant trials. A rapid prototype of a novel adhesion tester has been designed and constructed. The apparatus operates according to the principle of impact force acting on particles attached to the surface of the food substrate. The main component is a circular plate to which four sample holders are attached and which is subjected to vertical travel down a guide shaft. Several flavouring powders have been tested extensively. By plotting the detachment versus impact force, the difference obtained between adhesion strength of different flavouring powders (which is a strong function of particle size) has been discussed.

Despite the emerging use of diamond-like carbon (DLC) as a coating for medical devices, few studies have examined the resistance of DLC coatings onto medical polymers to both microbial adherence and encrustation. In this study, amorphous DLC of a range of refractive indexes (1.7-1.9) and thicknesses (100-600 nm) was deposited onto polyurethane, a model polymer, and the resistance to microbial adherence (Escherichia coli; clinical isolate) and encrustation examined using in vitro models. In comparison to the native polymer, the advancing and receding contact angles of DLC-coated polyurethane were lower, indicating greater hydrophilic properties. No relationship was observed between refractive index, thickness, and advancing contact angle, as determined using multiple correlation analysis. The resistances of the various DLC-coated polyurethane films to encrustation and microbial adherence were significantly greater than that to polyurethane; however, there were individual differences between the resistances of the various DLC coatings. In general, increasing the refractive index of the coatings (100 nm thickness) decreased the resistance of the films to both hydroxyapatite and struvite encrustation and to microbial adherence. Films of lower thicknesses (100 and 200 nm; of defined refractive index, 1.8), exhibited the greatest resistance to encrustation and to microbial adherence. In conclusion, this study has uniquely illustrated both the microbial antiadherence properties and resistance to urinary encrustation of DLC-coated polyurethane. The resistances to encrustation and microbial adherence were substantial, and in light of this, it is suggested that DLC coatings of low thickness and refractive index show particular promise as coatings of polymeric medical devices. Electroless nickel composite coatings with silicon carbide, SiC, as reinforcing particles deposited with Ni–P onto aluminium alloy, LM24, having zincating as under layer were subjected to heat treatment using air furnace. The changes at the interface were investigated using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) to probe the chemistry changes upon heat treatment. Microhardness tester with various loads using both Knoop and Vickers indenters was used to study the load effect clubbed with the influence of second phase particles on the coating at the vicinity of the interface. It was observed that zinc was absent at the interface after elevated temperature heat treatment at 400–500 °C. Precipitation of copper and nickel with a distinct demarcation (copper rich belt) along the coating interface was seen with irregular thickness of the order of 1 μm. Migration of copper from the bulk aluminium alloy could have been the factor. Brittleness of the coating was confirmed on heat treatment when indented with Vickers. However, in composite coating the propagation of the microcrack was stopped by the embedded particles but the microcracks continue in the matrix when not interrupted by second phase particles (SiC).

Electroless Ni–P (EN) and composite Ni–P–SiC (ENC) coatings were developed on cast aluminium alloy substrate, LM24. The coating phase composition, microstructure and microhardness were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and microhardness tester, respectively, on as-plated and heat-treated specimens. The original microstructure of the Ni–P matrix is not affected by the inclusion of the hard particles SiC. No formation of Ni–Si phase was observed up to 500 °C of heat treatment. The microhardness is increased on incorporation of SiC in Ni–P matrix. The hardening mechanism is the formation of intermetallic phase Ni3P on annealing at elevated temperature.

Surface behaviour is of paramount importance as failure and degradation tend to initiate from the surface. Electroless composite coating (NiP/SiC) was developed using SiC as reinforcing particles. As heat treatment plays a vital role in electroless nickel coating owing to the changes in microstructure, phase structure and mechanical properties, an insight at the interface changes in chemistry and micromechanical behaviour was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and microindentation techniques. Corrosion performance was analysed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Absence of zinc and migration of copper at the interface was detected. Brittleness and microcracks was seen long the interface when indenting at load of 500 gf (Vickers). Corrosion performance is weaker than particles free coating. However, a thin blanket of NiP could enhance the resistance to corrosive medium.

A novel artificial antibody for troponin T (TnT) was synthesized by molecular imprint (MI) on the surface of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). This was done by attaching TnT to the MWCNT surface, and filling the vacant spaces by polymerizing under mild conditions acrylamide (monomer) in N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (cross-linker) and ammonium persulphate (initiator). After removing the template, the obtained biomaterial was able to rebind TnT and discriminate it among other interfering species. Stereochemical recognition of TnT was confirmed by the non-rebinding ability displayed by non-imprinted (NI) materials, obtained by imprinting without a template. SEM and FTIR analysis confirmed the surface modification of the MWCNT. The ability of this biomaterial to rebind TnT was confirmed by including it as electroactive compound in a PVC/plasticizer mixture coating a wire of silver, gold or titanium. Anionic slopes of 50 mV decade−1 were obtained for the gold wire coated with MI-based membranes dipped in HEPES buffer of pH 7. The limit of detection was 0.16 μg mL−1. Neither the NI-MWCNT nor the MWCNT showed the ability to recognize the template. Good selectivity was observed against creatinine, sucrose, fructose, myoglobin, sodium glutamate, thiamine and urea. The sensor was tested successfully on serum samples. It is expected that this work opens new horizons on the design of new artificial antibodies for complex protein structures.

The diazirine functionalised fluorenone, 3-[3-(trifluoromethyl)diazirin-3-yl]phenyl-9-oxo-9H-fluorene-2-carboxyla te was synthesised to act as a model compound capable of modifying a wide variety of polymeric substrates. Photochemical activation of the diazirine moiety of the fluorenone derivative was utilised to afford highly reactive carbenes capable of insertion into or addition to a wide variety of functionalities. In this paper the photoinduced attachment of a fluorenone derivative to nylon 6,6 has been studied using UV-visible spectroscopic analysis. Incorporation of the fluorenone chromophore onto the backbone of nylon at different loading levels and after different coating cycles has been investigated and is detailed in this paper.

Asymmetric poly(styrene-b-methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) diblock copolymers of molecular weight M-n = 29,700g mol(-1) (M-PS = 9300 g mol(-1) M-PMMA = 20,100 g mol(-1), PD = 1.15, chi(PS) = 0.323, chi(PMMA) = 0.677) and M-n = 63,900 g mol(-1) (M-PS = 50,500 g mol(-1), M-PMMA = 13,400 g mol(-1), PD = 1.18, chi(PS) = 0.790, chi(PMMA) = 0.210) were prepared via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to investigate the surface structure of thin films, prepared by spin-coating the diblock copolymers on a silicon substrate. We show that the nanostructure of the diblock copolymer depends on the molecular weight and volume fraction of the diblock copolymers. We observed a perpendicular lamellar structure for the high molar mass sample and a hexagonal-packed cylindrical patterning for the lower molar mass one. Small-angle X-ray scattering investigation of these samples without annealing did not reveal any ordered structure. Annealing of PS-b-PMMA samples at 160 degrees C for 24 h led to a change in surface structure.
