New technologies, in particular those stemming from digitisation, allow amongst other things the production of perfect copies, instantaneous and ubiquitous distribution of and easy access to information with no real location restrictions. The effects of these technological advances have largely been perceived as negative for the protection of traditional cultural expressions (TCE), both because of the peculiarities of the digital networked environment and because of the lack of appropriate intellectual property protection models for TCE. The purpose of this article is, while accounting for the diversity and complexity of issues related to TCE, to reveal a more positive side of digital technologies. It shows the potential of these to be proactively applied and the further reaching possibilities for designing an efficient multi-level and multi-faceted toolbox for the protection and promotion of TCE in the digital ecology.

Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) is a fungus infecting the skin of amphibians. On metamorphosing animals the infection is difficult to detect because of the limited information concerning the location of Bd on the animals during this stage. Histological investigation revealed that Bd accumulated on the reabsorbing tail of metamorphosing animals. This observation may facilitate the detection of Bd in metamorphosing amphibians.

The tail-withdrawal circuit of Aplysia provides a useful model system for investigating synaptic dynamics. Sensory neurons within the circuit manifest several forms of synaptic plasticity. Here, we developed a model of the circuit and investigated the ways in which depression (DEP) and potentiation (POT) contributed to information processing. DEP limited the amount of motor neuron activity that could be elicited by the monosynaptic pathway alone. POT within the monosynaptic pathway did not compensate for DEP. There was, however, a synergistic interaction between POT and the polysynaptic pathway. This synergism extended the dynamic range of the network, and the interplay between DEP and POT made the circuit responded preferentially to long-duration, low-frequency inputs.

A plasmid based genetic system was developed for the tail protein of the Salmonella typhimurium bacteriophage P22 and used to isolate and characterize tail protein mutants. The tail protein is a trimeric structural protein of the phage and an endorhamnosidase whose activity is essential for infection. The gene for the tail protein has previously been cloned into a plasmid expression vector and sequenced. A plate complementation assay for tail protein produced from the cloned gene was developed and used to isolate 27 tail protein mutants following mutagenesis of the cloned gene. These mutations were mapped into 12 deletion intervals using deletions which were made on plasmids in vitro and crossed onto P22. The base substitutions were determined by DNA sequencing. The majority of mutants had missense or nonsense mutations in the protein coding portion of the gene; however four of the mutants were in the putative transcription terminator. The oligomeric state of tail protein from the 15 missense mutants was investigated using SDS and nondenaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of cell lysates. Wild-type tail protein retains its trimeric structure in SDS gels at room temperature. Two of the mutant proteins also migrated as trimers in SDS gels, yet one of these had a considerably faster mobility than wild-type trimer. Its migration was the same as wild-type in a nondenaturing gel, so it is thought to be a trimer which is partially denatured by SDS. Four of the mutants produced proteins which migrate at the position of a monomer in an SDS gel but cannot be seen on a nondenaturing gel. These proteins are thought to be either monomers or soluble aggregates which cannot enter the nondenaturing gel. The remainder of mutants produce protein which is degraded. The mutant tail protein which had normal trimeric mobility on SDS and nondenaturing gels was purified. This protein has essentially wild-type ability to attach to phage capsids, but its endorhamnosidase activity is only 4% of wild-type. ^

Long-term sensitization in Aplysia is a well studied model for the examination of the cellular and molecules mechanisms of long-term memory. Several lines of evidence suggest long-term sensitization is mediated at least partially by long-term synaptic facilitation between the sensory and motor neurons. The sensitization training and one of its analogues, serotonin (5-HT), can induce long-term facilitation. In this study, another analogue to long-term sensitization training has been developed. Stimulation of peripheral nerves of pleural-pedal ganglia preparation induced long-term facilitation at both 24 hr and 48 hr. This is the first report that long-term facilitation in Aplysia persists for more than 24 hr, which is consistent with the observation that long-term sensitization lasts for more than one day. Thus, the data support the hypothesis that long-term facilitation is an important mechanism for long-term sensitization.^ One of the major differences between short-term and long-term facilitation is that long-term facilitation requires protein synthesis. Therefore, the effects of anisomycin, a protein synthesis inhibitor, on long-term facilitation was examined. Long-term facilitation induced by nerve stimulation was inhibited by 2 $\mu$M anisomycin, which inhibits $\sim$90% of protein synthesis. Nevertheless, at higher concentration (20 $\mu$M), anisomycin induced long-term facilitation by itself, which raises an interesting question about the function of anisomycin other than protein synthesis inhibition.^ Since protein synthesis is critical for long-term facilitation, a major goal is to identify and functionally characterize the molecules whose mRNA levels are altered during the formation of long-term facilitation. Behavioral training or its analogues (nerve stimulation and 5-HT) increases the level of mRNA of calmodulin (CaM). Thus, the role of Ca$\sp{2+}$-CaM-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII), a major substrate of CaM, in long-term facilitation induced by nerve stimulation was examined. KN-62, a specific CaMKII inhibitor, did not block either the induction or the maintenance of long-term facilitation induced by nerve stimulation. These data indicate that CaMKII may not be involved in long-term facilitation. Another protein whose mRNA level of a molecule was increased by the behavioral training and the treatment of 5-HT is Aplysia tolloid/BMP-1-like protein 1 (apTBL-1). Tolloid in Drosophila and BMP-1 in human tissues are believed to be secreted as a metalloprotease to activate TGF-$\beta.$ Thus, the long-term effects of recombinant human TGF-$\beta1$ on synaptic strength were examined. Treatment of ganglia with TGF-$\beta1$ produced long-term facilitation, but not short-term or intermediate-term facilitation ($\le$4 hr). In addition, TGF-$\beta1$ and 5-HT were not additive in producing long-term facilitation, which indicates an interaction between two cascades. Moreover, 5-HT-induced facilitation (at both 24 hr and 48 hr) and nerve stimulation-induced facilitation (at 24 hr) were inhibited by TGF-$\beta$ sRII, a TGF-$\beta$ inhibitor. These results suggest that TGF-$\beta$ is part of the cascade of events underlying long-term sensitization, and also indicate that a signaling molecule used in development may also have functions in adult neuronal plasticity. ^

This article proposes computing sensitivities of upper tail probabilities of random sums by the saddlepoint approximation. The considered sensitivity is the derivative of the upper tail probability with respect to the parameter of the summation index distribution. Random sums with Poisson or Geometric distributed summation indices and Gamma or Weibull distributed summands are considered. The score method with importance sampling is considered as an alternative approximation. Numerical studies show that the saddlepoint approximation and the method of score with importance sampling are very accurate. But the saddlepoint approximation is substantially faster than the score method with importance sampling. Thus, the suggested saddlepoint approximation can be conveniently used in various scientific problems.

Two sympatrically occurring bat species, the greater mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis (Borkhausen, 1797)) and the lesser mouse-eared bat (Myotis blythii (Tomes, 1857)) (Chiroptera, Vespertillionidae), share numerous similarities in morphology, roosting behaviour, and echolocation and are often difficult to distinguish. However, despite these similarities, their foraging behaviour is noticeably different. Our aim was to examine the extent to which these different foraging strategies reflect morphological adaptation. We assessed whether the morphology of the wing, body, and tail differed between M. myotis and M. blythii. In addition, in a laboratory experiment involving an obstacle course, we compared differences in manoeuvrability by relating them to our morphological measurements. The two species differed in their overall size, wing-tip shape, and tail-to-body length ratio. The generally smaller sized M. blythii performed better in the obstacle course and was therefore considered to be more manoeuvrable. Although differences in wing-tip shape were observed, we found the most important characteristic affecting manoeuvrability in both species to be the tail-to-body length ratio. Additionally, when we compared two bats with injured wing membranes with unharmed bats of the same species, we found no difference in manoeuvrability, even when the wing shape was asymmetric. We therefore postulate that morphometric differences between the two species in their overall size and, more importantly, in their tail-to-body length ratio are the main physical characteristics providing proof of adaptation to different foraging and feeding strategies.

We review various inequalities for Mills' ratio (1 - Φ)= Ø, where Ø and Φ denote the standard Gaussian density and distribution function, respectively. Elementary considerations involving finite continued fractions lead to a general approximation scheme which implies and refines several known bounds.

BACKGROUND Lymphedema is an underdiagnosed pathology which in industrialized countries mainly affects cancer patients that underwent lymph node dissection and/or radiation. Currently no effective therapy is available so that patients' life quality is compromised by swellings of the concerned body region. This unfortunate condition is associated with body imbalance and subsequent osteochondral deformations and impaired function as well as with an increased risk of potentially life threatening soft tissue infections. METHODS The effects of PRP and ASC on angiogenesis (anti-CD31 staining), microcirculation (Laser Doppler Imaging), lymphangiogenesis (anti-LYVE1 staining), microvascular architecture (corrosion casting) and wound healing (digital planimetry) are studied in a murine tail lymphedema model. RESULTS Wounds treated by PRP and ASC healed faster and showed a significantly increased epithelialization mainly from the proximal wound margin. The application of PRP induced a significantly increased lymphangiogenesis while the application of ASC did not induce any significant change in this regard. CONCLUSIONS PRP and ASC affect lymphangiogenesis and lymphedema development and might represent a promising approach to improve regeneration of lymphatic vessels, restore disrupted lymphatic circulation and treat or prevent lymphedema alone or in combination with currently available lymphedema therapies.
