The first objective of this paper is to show that a single-stage adsorption based cooling-cum-desalination system cannot be used if air cooled heat rejection is used under tropical conditions. This objective is achieved by operating a silica gel + water adsorption chiller first in a single-stage mode and then in a 2-stage mode with 2 beds/stage in each case. The second objective is to improve upon the simulation results obtained earlier by way of empirically describing the thermal wave phenomena during switching of operation of beds between adsorption and desorption and vice versa. Performance indicators, namely, cooling capacity, coefficient of performance and desalinated water output are extracted for various evaporator pressures and half cycle times. The improved simulation model is found to interpret experimental results more closely than the earlier one. Reasons for decline in performance indicators between theoretical and actual scenarios are appraised. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and IIR. All rights reserved.

General propagation properties and universal curves are given for double clad single mode fibers with inner cladding index higher or lower than the outer cladding index, using the parameter: inner cladding/core radii ratio. Mode cut-off conditions are also examined for the cases. It is shown that dispersion properties largely differ from the single clad single mode fiber case, leading to large new possibilities for extension of single mode operation for large wavelength tange. Paper demonstrates that how substantially we can extend the single mode operation range by using the raised inner cladding fiber. Throughout we have applied our own computations technique to find out the eigenvalue for a given modes. Detail derivations with all trivial mathematics for eigenmode equation are derived for each case. Paper also demonstrates that there is not much use of using depressed inner cladding fiber. We have also concluded that using the large inner cladding/inner core radius we can significantly increase the single mode operation range for the large wavelength region. (C) 2015 Elsevier GmbH. A previously developed Stochastic Reactor Model (SRM) is used to simulate combustion in a four cylinder in-line four-stroke naturally aspirated direct injection Spark Ignition (SI) engine modified to run in Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) mode with a Negative Valve Overlap (NVO). A portion of the fuel is injected during NVO to increase the cylinder temperature and enable HCCI combustion at a compression ratio of 12:1. The model is coupled with GT-Power, a one-dimensional engine simulation tool used for the open valve portion of the engine cycle. The SRM is used to model in-cylinder mixing, heat transfer and chemistry during the NVO and main combustion. Direct injection is simulated during NVO in order to predict heat release and internal Exhaust Gas Recycle (EGR) composition and mass. The NOx emissions and simulated pressure profiles match experimental data well, including the cyclic fluctuations. The model predicts combustion characteristics at different fuel split ratios and injection timings. The effect of fuel reforming on ignition timing is investigated along with the causes of cycle to cycle variations and unstable operation. A detailed flux analysis during NVO unearths interesting results regarding the effect of NOx on ignition timing compared with its effect during the main combustion. © 2009 SAE International.

In this paper we analyze the valuation of options stemming from the flexibility in an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) Power Plant. First we use as a base case the opportunity to invest in a Natural Gas Combined Cycle (NGCC) Power Plant, deriving the optimal investment rule as a function of fuel price and the remaining life of the right to invest. Additionally, the analytical solution for a perpetual option is obtained. Second, the valuation of an operating IGCC Power Plant is studied, with switching costs between states and a choice of the best operation mode. The valuation of this plant serves as a base to obtain the value of the option to delay an investment of this type. Finally, we derive the value of an opportunity to invest either in a NGCC or IGCC Power Plant, that is, to choose between an inflexible and a flexible technology, respectively. Numerical computations involve the use of one- and two-dimensional binomial lattices that support a mean-reverting process for the fuel prices. Basic parameter values refer to an actual IGCC power plant currently in operation.

It is proposed that single attosecond pulses be generated via high-order harmonic generation by using a two-color pump pulse with time dependent ellipticity. The two-color pump pulse is created by the fundamental field and its second harmonic: the fundamental field is left-circularly polarized and the second harmonic is right-circularly polarized. Numerical simulations show that single attosecond pulses can be produced in the cut-off region by using the synthesis of 20 fs left-hand and right-hand circularly polarized pulses with a pulse delay of 20 fs. The attosecond pulses produced this way are much stronger than that produced by a few-cycle linear polarized pulse of comparable intensity. (c) 2005 Optical Society of America

We theoretically demonstrate the generation of extreme ultraviolet supercontinua in an orthogonally polarized two-color few-cycle laser field. We show that the ionized electrons can be driven back to their parent ion after traveling along curved trajectories in a plane perpendicular to the beam propagation direction, giving rise to a train of attosecond pulses at different polarization angles. A single isolated attosecond pulse can be obtained by blocking the low-order high harmonics, which contribute to the formation of the satellite pulses. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America.

Diode-pumped passively mode-locked laser operation of Yb3+,Na+:CaF2 single crystal has been demonstrated for the first time. By using a SESAM ( semiconductor saturable mirror), simultaneous transform-limited 1-ps passively mode-locked pulses, with the repetition rate of 183MHz, were obtained under the self-Q-switched envelope induced by the laser medium. The average output power of 360mW was attained at 1047nm for 3.34W of absorbed power at 976nm, and the corresponding pulse peak power arrived at 27kW, indicating the promising application of Yb3+,Na+-codoped CaF2 crystals in achieving ultra-short pulses and high pulse peak power. We theoretically show that selection of a single quantum path in high-order harmonics generation can be realized in a few-optical-cycle regime with two-color schemes. We also demonstrate, in theory as well, the generation of spectrally smooth and ultrabroad extreme ultraviolet supercontinuum in argon gas which can produce single similar to 79 as pulses with currently available ultrafast laser sources. Our finding can be beneficial for generating isolated sub-100 as extreme ultraviolet pulses.

Part I

These studies investigate the potential of single and double treatments with either 5-fluorodeoxyuridine of excess thymidine to induce cell division synchrony in suspension cultures of HeLa cells. The patterns of nucleic acid synthesis and cell proliferation have been analyzed in cultures thus synchronized. Several changes in cell population during long incubation with 5-fluorodeoxyuridine or excess thymidine are also described. These results are subjected to detailed evaluation in terms of the degree and quality of synchrony finally achieved.

Part II

Histones and non-histone proteins associated with interphase and metaphase chromosomes of HeLa cells have been qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed. Histones were fractionated by chromatography on Amberlite CG-50 and further characterized by analytical disc electrophoresis and amino acid analysis of each chromatographic fraction. It is concluded that histones of HeLa cells are comprised of only a small number of major components and that these components are homologous to those of other higher organisms. Of all the histones, arginine-rich histone III alone contains cysteine and can polymerize through formation of intermolecular disulfide bridges between histone III monomers.

A detailed comparison by chromatography and disc electrophoresis established that interphase and metaphase histones are made up of similar components. However, certain quantitative differences in proportions of different histones of interphase and metaphase cells are reported. Indirect evidence indicates that a certain proportion of metaphase histone III is polymerized through intermolecular disulfide links, whereas interphase histone III occurs mainly in the monomeric form.

Metaphase chromosomes are associated with an additional acid-soluble protein fraction which is absent from interphase chromosomes. All of these additional acid-soluble proteins of metaphase chromosomes are shown to be non-histones and it is concluded that the histone/DNA ratio is identical in interphase and metaphase chromosomes. The bulk of acid-soluble non-histone proteins of metaphase chromosomes were found to be polymerized through disulfide bridges; corresponding interphase non-histone proteins displayed no evidence of similar polymerization.

The factors responsible for the condensed configuration and metabolic inactivity of metaphase chromosomes are discussed in light of these findings.

The relationship between histone and DNA synthesis in nondividing differentiated chicken erythrocyte cells and in rapidly dividing undifferentiated HeLa cells is also investigated. Of all the histones, only arginine-rich histones are synthesized in mature erythrocytes. Histone synthesis in HeLa cells was studied in both unsynchronized and synchronized cultures. In HeLa cells, only part of the synthesis of all histone fractions is dependent on concurrent DNA synthesis, whereas all histones are synthesized in varying degrees even in the absence of DNA synthesis.

A novel method incorporating the shielded method and the post-processing method has been proposed to fabricate the pi-phase-shilted fibre grating. Then an Er-doped pi-phase-shifted distributed feedback fibre grating laser has been fabricated using the grating. The laser threshold is 20 mW. When pumped with 90 mW light at 980 nm, the laser gives an output of 1.1 mW. Its signal-to-noise ratio is better than 60 dB. It is demonstrated that the laser is single mode operation by means of a Fabry-Perot scanning interferometer.

A single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) laser-diode pumped Nd: YAG laser with adjustable pulse width is developed by using the techniques of pre-lasing and changing polarization of birefingent crystal. The Q-switching voltage is triggered by the peak of the pre-lasing pulse to achieve the higher stability of output pulse energy. The output energy of more than 1 mJ is obtained with output energy stability of 3% (rms) at 100 Hz. The pulse-width can be adjusted from 30 ns to 300 ns by changing the Q-switching voltage. The probability of putting out single-longitudinal-mode pulses is almost 100%. The laser can be run over four hours continually without mode hopping.

We describe high-power planar waveguide laser which can achieve single-mode output from a multi-mode structure. The planar waveguide is constructed with incomplete self-imaging properties, by which the coupling loss of each guided mode can be discriminated. Thermal lens effects are evaluated for single-mode operation of such high-power diode-pumped solid-state lasers. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

High-quality Nd:LuVO4 single crystal was successfully grown by Czochralski method. The assessment of the crystalline quality by the chemical etching method and Conoscope image was reported. The absorption spectra from 300 to 1000 nm and emission spectra from 960 to 1450 nm of Nd: LuVO4 were measured. Laser performance was achieved with Nd:LUVO4 crystal for the transition of F-4(3/2) -> I-4(11/2) (corresponding wavelength 1065.8 nm) in an actively Q-switched operation, and the average output power reached 5.42 W at a pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of 40 kHz under pump power of 18 W, giving an optical conversion efficiency of 30.1%. The pulse energy and peak power reached 138 mu J and 16.2 kW at PRF of 25 kHz under pump power of 14.2 W, and the pulse duration was 8.5 ns. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

For the first time, a high optical quality 10 at.% Yb3+-doped gadolinium oxyorthosilicate laser crystal Gd2SiO5 (GSO) was grown by the Czochralski (Cz) method. The segregation coefficient of Yb3+ was studied by the inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES) method. The crystal structure has monoclinic symmetry with space group P2(1)/c; this was determined by means of an x-ray diffraction analysis. The absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra and fluorescence decay curves of Yb3+ ions in a GSO crystal at room temperature were also studied. Then, the spectroscopic parameters of Yb:GSO were calculated. The advantages of the Yb:GSO crystal include high crystal quality, quasi-four-level laser operating scheme, high absorption cross-sections and particularly broad emission bandwidth (similar to 72 nm). The results indicated that the Yb:GSO crystal seemed to be a very promising laser gain medium in diode-pumped femtosecond laser and tunable solid state laser applications when LD pumped at 940 and 980 nm.
