We present the essential features of the dissipative parametric instability, in the universal complex Ginzburg- Landau equation. Dissipative parametric instability is excited through a parametric modulation of frequency dependent losses in a zig-zag fashion in the spectral domain. Such damping is introduced respectively for spectral components in the +ΔF and in the -ΔF region in alternating fashion, where F can represent wavenumber or temporal frequency depending on the applications. Such a spectral modulation can destabilize the homogeneous stationary solution of the system leading to growth of spectral sidebands and to the consequent pattern formation: both stable and unstable patterns in one- and in two-dimensional systems can be excited. The dissipative parametric instability provides an useful and interesting tool for the control of pattern formation in nonlinear optical systems with potentially interesting applications in technological applications, like the design of mode- locked lasers emitting pulse trains with tunable repetition rate; but it could also find realizations in nanophotonics circuits or in dissipative polaritonic Bose-Einstein condensates.
Dark soliton generation from semiconductor optical amplifier gain medium in ring fiber configuration
Resumo:
We have investigated the mode-lock operation from a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) gain chip in the ring fibre configuration. At lower pump currents, the laser generates dark soliton pulses both at the fundamental repetition rate of 39 MHz and supports up to the 6th harmonic order corresponding to 234-MHz repetition rate with an output power of ∼2.1 mW. At higher pump currents, the laser can be switched between the bright, dark and concurrent bright and dark soliton generation regimes.

The only effective method of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) strain modulation has been by changing the distance between its two fixed ends. We demonstrate an alternative being more sensitive to force based on the nonlinear amplification relationship between a transverse force applied to a stretched string and its induced axial force. It may improve the sensitivity and size of an FBG force sensor, reduce the number of FBGs needed for multi-axial force monitoring, and control the resonant frequency of an FBG accelerometer.

Based on a method proposed by Reddy and Shanmugasundaram, similar solutions have been obtained for the steady inviscid quasi-one-dimensional nonreacting flow in the supersonic nozzle of CO2-N2-H2O and CO2-N2-He gasdynamic laser systems. Instead of using the correlations of a nonsimilar function NS for pure N2 gas, as is done in previous publications, the NS correlations are computed here for the actual gas mixtures used in the gasdynamic lasers. Optimum small-signal optical gain and the corresponding optimum values of the operating parameters like reservoir pressure and temperature and nozzle area ratio are computed using these correlations. The present results are compared with the previous results and the main differences are discussed. Journal of Applied Physics is copyrighted by The American Institute of Physics.

This paper reports the fabrication and characterization of an ultrafast laser written Er-doped chalcogenide glass buried waveguide amplifier; Er-doped GeGaS glass has been synthesized by the vacuum sealed melt quenching technique. Waveguides have been fabricated inside the 4 mm long sample by direct ultrafast laser writing. The total passive fiber-to-fiber insertion loss is 2.58 +/- 0.02 dB at 1600 nm, including a propagation loss of 1.6 +/- 0.3 dB. Active characterization shows a relative gain of 2.524 +/- 0.002 dB/cm and 1.359 +/- 0.005 dB/cm at 1541 nm and 1550 nm respectively, for a pump power of 500 mW at a wavelength of 980 nm. The standard approach to signal reconstruction in frequency-domain optical-coherence tomography (FDOCT) is to apply the inverse Fourier transform to the measurements. This technique offers limited resolution (due to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle). We propose a new super-resolution reconstruction method based on a parametric representation. We consider multilayer specimens, wherein each layer has a constant refractive index and show that the backscattered signal from such a specimen fits accurately in to the framework of finite-rate-of-innovation (FRI) signal model and is represented by a finite number of free parameters. We deploy the high-resolution Prony method and show that high-quality, super-resolved reconstruction is possible with fewer measurements (about one-fourth of the number required for the standard Fourier technique). To further improve robustness to noise in practical scenarios, we take advantage of an iterated singular-value decomposition algorithm (Cadzow denoiser). We present results of Monte Carlo analyses, and assess statistical efficiency of the reconstruction techniques by comparing their performance against the Cramer-Rao bound. Reconstruction results on experimental data obtained from technical as well as biological specimens show a distinct improvement in resolution and signal-to-reconstruction noise offered by the proposed method in comparison with the standard approach.

Thermal fluctuation approach is widely used to monitor association kinetics of surface-bound receptor-ligand interactions. Various protocols such as sliding standard deviation (SD) analysis (SSA) and Page's test analysis (PTA) have been used to estimate two-dimensional (2D) kinetic rates from the time course of displacement of molecular carrier. In the current work, we compared the estimations from both SSA and modified PTA using measured data from an optical trap assay and simulated data from a random number generator. Our results indicated that both SSA and PTA were reliable in estimating 2D kinetic rates. Parametric analysis also demonstrated that such the estimations were sensitive to parameters such as sampling rate, sliding window size, and threshold. These results furthered the understandings in quantifying the biophysics of receptor-ligand interactions.

We demonstrated optical amplification at 1550 nm with a carbon tetrachloride solution of Er3+-Yb3+ codoped NaYF4 nanocubes synthesized with solvo-thermal route. Upon excitation with a 980 nm laser diode, the nanocube solution exhibited strong near-infrared emission by the I-4(13/2) -> I-4(15/2) transition of Er3+ ions due to energy transfer from Yb3+ ions. We obtained the highest optical gain coefficient at 1550 nm of 0.58 cm(-1) for the solution with the pumping power of 200 mW. This colloidal solution might be a promising candidate as a liquid medium for optical amplifier and laser at the optical communication wavelength. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

We have developed a two-stage Ti:sapphire amplifier system which can produce 17-TW/23-fs pulses at a repetition rate 10 MHz. A birefringent plate is used in the regenerative amplifier to alleviate gain narrowing, while an all-reflective cylindrical-mirror-based pulse stretcher and an acousto-optic programmable dispersive filter (AOPDF) are used to compensate for the higher order dispersion of the system.

New parasitic lasing suppression techniques are developed and high gain amplification is demonstrated in a petawatt level Ti:sapphire amplifier based on the chirped pulse amplification (CPA) scheme. Cladding the large aperture Ti: sapphire with refractive-index matched liquid doped with absorber suppresses the transverse lasing. The acousto-optic programmable dispersive filter (AOPDF) is used to realize side-lobe suppression in the temporal profile of the compressed pulse. The 800 nm laser output with peak power of 0.89 PW and pulse width of 29.0 fs is demonstrated. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.
