Superconductors have a bright future; they are able to carry very high current densities, switch rapidly in electronic circuits, detect extremely small perturbations in magnetic fields, and sustain very high magnetic fields. Of most interest to large-scale electrical engineering applications are the ability to carry large currents and to provide large magnetic fields. There are many projects that use the first property, and these have concentrated on power generation, transmission, and utilization; however, there are relatively few, which are currently exploiting the ability to sustain high magnetic fields. The main reason for this is that high field wound magnets can and have been made from both BSCCO and YBCO, but currently, their cost is much higher than the alternative provided by low-Tc materials such as Nb3Sn and NbTi. An alternative form of the material is the bulk form, which can be magnetized to high fields. This paper explains the mechanism, which allows superconductors to be magnetized without the need for high field magnets to perform magnetization. A finite-element model is presented, which is based on the E-J current law. Results from this model show how magnetization of the superconductor builds up cycle upon cycle when a traveling magnetic wave is induced above the superconductor. © 2011 IEEE.

Bulk, polycrystalline MgB2 samples containing 2.5 wt.% multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been prepared by conventional solid state reaction at 800 °C. The effect of Mg precursor powders composed of two different particle sizes on the critical current density (Jc) of the as-sintered samples has been investigated. An enhancement of Jc at high field has been observed in MgB2 samples containing CNTs prepared with fine Mg powders, whereas the values of Jc in the sample prepared using the coarser Mg powders was slightly decreased. These results contrast significantly with measurements on pure, undoped, MgB2 samples prepared from the same Mg precursor powders. They suggest that carbon substitution into the MgB2 lattice, which accounts for increased flux pinning, and therefore Jc, is more effective in precursor Mg powders with a larger surface area. Rather surprisingly, the so-called fishtail effect, observed typically in MgB2 single crystals and in the (RE)BCO family of high temperature superconductors (HTSs), was observed in both sets of CNT-containing polycrystalline samples as a result of lattice defects associated with C substitution. Significantly, analytical fits to the data for each sample suggest that the same flux pinning mechanism accounts for the fishtail effect in polycrystalline MgB2 and (RE)BCO. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. A simple, rapid and sensitive on-line method for simultaneous determination of four endocrine disruptors (17 beta-estradiol, estriol, bisphenol A and 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol) in environmental waters was developed by coupling in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME) to high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection (FLD). A poly(acrylamide-vinylpyridine-NAP-methylene bisacrylamide) monolith, synthesized inside a polyether ether ketone (PEEK) tube, was selected as the extraction medium. To achieve optimum extraction performance, several parameters were investigated, including extraction flow-rate, extraction time, and pH value, inorganic salt and organic solvent content of the sample matrix. By simply filtered with nylon membrane filter and adjusting the pH of samples to 6.0 with phosphoric acid, the sample solution then could be directly injected into the device for extraction. Low detection limits (S/N = 3) and quantification limits (S/N = 10) of the proposed method were achieved in the range of 0.006-0.10 ng/mL and 0.02-0.35 ng/mL from spiked lake waters, respectively. The calibration curves of four endocrine disruptors showed good linearity ranging from quantification limits to 50 ng/mL with a linear coefficient R-2 value above 0.9913. Good method reproducibility was also found by intra- and inter-day precisions, yielding the RSDs less than 12 and 9.8%, respectively. Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of these compounds in several environmental waters. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Hall effect, photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), mass spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction have been used to study bulk ZnO single crystal grown by a closed seeded chemical vapor transport method. Enhancement of n-type electrical conduction and increase of nitrogen concentration are observed of the ZnO samples after high temperature annealing. The results suggest that vacancy is dominant native defect in the ZnO material. These phenomena are explained by a generation of shallow donor defect and suppression of deep level defects in ZnO after the annealing.

CMOS/SOS devices have lower carriers mobility and higher channel leakage current than bulk silicon CMOS devices. These mainly results from the defects of heteroepitaxial silicon film, especially from the defects near Si-Sapphire interface. This paper describes the experiment results of CMOS/SOS devices characteristics improved by a better epitaxial silicon quality which is obtained by a modified solid phase epitaxy.

Nanosized Ce1-xCuxOy materials were prepared by complexation-combustion method. The structural characteristics and redox behaviors were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (H-2-TPR), UV-Vis, and Raman spectroscopies. In XRD patterns, no evidence of CuO diffraction peaks are observed for the Ce1-xCuxOy samples calcinated at 650 degreesC for 5 h, until the Cu/(Ce + Cu) ratio is higher than 0.4. The stepwise decrease of the 2theta value of CeO2 in Ce1-xCuxOy with the increasing of Cu concentration suggests that the CU2+ ions incorporate into the CeO2 lattice to form Ce1-xCuxOy solid solutions for low Cu/(Ce + Cu) ratios (x less than or equal to 0.1). The CuO phase begins to segregate from the solid solutions with the further increasing of Cu/(Ce+Cu) ratio. The Raman mode at 1176 cm(-1) ascribed to the enhanced defects appears for CeO2 and the Ce0.9Cu0.1Oy solid solution. Compared with CeO2 alone, the Raman mode of cubic CeO2 shifts from 462 to 443 cm(-1) for the Ce0.9Cu0.1Oy solid solution. The H-2 consumption of the fresh Ce0.95Cu0.05Oy is 1.65 times higher than that needed to reduce CuO to Cu, and it increases to 2.4 after a reoxidation of the partially reduced Ce0.95Cu0.05Oy at 300 degreesC, which indicates that the CeO2 phase is also extensively reduced. Compared with the high Cu/(Ce+Cu) ratio sample Ce0.7Cu0.3Oy, the Ce0.9Cu0.1Oy solid solution shows high and stable redox property even after different reoxidation temperatures. When the reoxidation temperature exceeds 200 degreesC, the a peak (similar to170 degreesC) ascribed to the reduction of surface oxygen disappears, and the P peak (similar to190 degreesC) ascribed to the reduction of Cu2+ species and the partial reduction of bulk CeO2 shifts to higher temperatures with the H-2 consumption 1.16 times higher than that for fresh sample. The result demonstrates that the redox property of the CeO2 is Significantly improved by forming the Ce1-xCuxOy solid solutions.

A novel cemented carbides (W0.7Al0.3)C-0.65-Co with different cobalt contents were prepared by solid-state reaction and hot-pressing technique. Hot-pressing technique as a novel technique was performed to fabricate the bulk bodies of the hard alloys. The novel cemented carbides have superior mechanical properties compared with WC-Co. The density, operate cost of the novel material were lower than WC-Co system. The novel materials were easy to process nanoscale sintering and get the rounded particles in the bulk materials. There is almost no eta-phase in the (W0.7Al0.3)C-0.65-Co cemented carbides system although the carbon deficient get the astonished 35% value.

The electrolytic deposition and diffusion of lithium onto bulk magnesium-9 wt pct yttrium alloy cathode in molten salt of 47 wt pct lithium chloride and 53 wt pct potassium chloride at 693 K were investigated. Results show that magnesium-yttrium-lithium ternary alloys are formed on the surface of the cathodes, and a penetration depth of 642 mu m is acquired after 2 hours of electrolysis at the cathodic current density of 0.06 A center dot cm(-2). The diffusion of lithium results in a great amount of precipitates in the lithium containing layer. These precipitates are the compound of Mg41Y5, which arrange along the grain boundaries and hinder the diffusion of lithium, and solid solution of yttrium in magnesium. The grain boundaries and the twins of the magnesium-9 wt pct yttrium substrate also have negative effects on the diffusion of lithium.

The bulk moduli of some superhard materials were calculated by using the chemical bond method. For simple crystals, such as diamonds, c-BN, SiC, Si, BP, and Ge, the calculated results agree with experimental and theoretical values. For crystals of complex structure, such as beta-BC2N crystal and various structural C3N4 crystals, the results indicate that their bulk moduli are large, but do not exceed that of diamond.

BACKGROUND: Thermodynamic studies on Ce(IV) extraction with primary amine N1923 demonstrate that primary amine N1923 is an excellent extractant for separation of Ce(IV) from Re(III). In order to clarify the mechanism of extraction and to optimize the parameters in practical extraction systems used in the rare earth industry, the extraction kinetics was investigated using a constant interfacial area cell with laminar flow in the present work.RESULTS: The data indicate that the rate constant (k(ao).) becomes constant when stirring speed exceeds 250 rpm. The apparent forward extraction rate is calculated to be 10(-1.70). The activation energy (E.) was calculated to be 20.5 kJ/mol from the slope of log kao against 1000/T. The minimum bulk concentration of the extractant necessary to saturate the interface (C-min) is lower than 10(-5) mol L-1.CONCLUSION: Studies of interfacial tension and the effects of stirring rate and specific interfacial area on the extraction rate show that the extraction rate is kinetically controlled, and a mass transfer model has been proposed. The rate equation has been obtained as: -d[Ce(IV)]/dt = 10(-1.70)[Ce(IV)] [(RNH3)(2)SO4](1.376). The rate-controlling step has been evaluated from analysis of the experimental results.

Silica coating on Gd2O3:Eu particles was obtained by a simple method, e.g. solid-state reaction at room temperature. The urea homogeneous precipitation method was used to synthesize the Gd2O3:Eu cores. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that the core particles are spherical with submicrometer size which is the soft agglomerates with nanometer crystallites. The TEM morphology of coated particles shows that a thin film is coated on the surface of Gd2O3:Eu cores. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analysis indicate that the coating of silica can be used to avoid agglomeration of Gd2O3:Eu particles to obtain smaller particles. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) show that silica is coated on the surface of core particles by forming the chemical bond. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra conform that Gd2O3:Eu phosphors remain well-luminescent properties by the silica coating.

In this work, a novel substitutional solid solution (W0.8Al0.2)C was synthesized by mechanically activated high-temperature reaction. X-ray diffraction was used for phase identification during the whole reaction process. Environment scanning electronic microscopy-field emission gun and energy dispersive x-ray were used to investigate the microstructure and the quantitative material composition of the specimen. (W(0.8)A(10.2))C was found to crystallize in the WC-type, and the cell parameters were a = 2.907(1) angstrom and c = 2.837(1) angstrom. The hardness of (W0.8Al0.2)C was tested to be 19.3 +/- 1 GPa, and the density was 13.19 +/- 0.05 g cm(-3).

The synthesis Of SiO2 coated CeO2 nanoparticles by humid solid state reaction at room. temperature is described. Transmission electron microscope results show that CeO2 Particles were coated with a layer Of SiO2. Binding energy of Ce 3d(5/2) was shifted from 883.8 to 882.8 eV after coating in the XPS Ce 3d spectra. This confirms the chemical bond formation between SiO32- and Ce4+. Because the surface photovoltage property of CeO2 nanoparticles that were used as core materials in the experiment approaches to that of CeO2 macroparticles, peak P2 (electron transition from 0 2p on surface to Ce 4f) disappeared in the surface photovoltage spectrum of CeO2 nanoparticles. Also, the effect Of SiO2 on the electron transition from 0 2p to Ce 4f results in the lowering of surface photovoltage response intensity of P1 peak (electron transition from 0 2p in bulk to Ce 4f).

Humid solid state reaction at room temperature was utilized for the first time to coat Y2O3 : Eu3+ particles with alumina. The particles were studied with an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). XPS results show that the yttrium and europium contents are decreased and that the aluminum content is the highest except for that of oxygen after coating. SEM and EDS results show that particles are coated with a thin shell of alumina.

Based on the complex crystal chemical bond theory, the formula of Liu and Cohen's, which is only suitable for one type of bond, has been extended to calculate the bulk modulus of ternary chalcopyrite A(I)B(III)C(2)(VI) and A(II)B(IV)C(2)(V) which contains two types of bonds. The calculated results are in fair agreement with the previous theoretical values reported and experimental values. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
