Homo-and heteronuclear meso,meso-(E)-ethene-1,2-diyl-linked diporphyrins have been prepared by the Suzuki coupling of porphyrinylboronates and iodovinylporphyrins. Combinations comprising 5,10,15-triphenylporphyrin (TriPP) on both ends of the ethene-1,2-diyl bridge M 210 (M 2=H 2/Ni, Ni 2, Ni/Zn, H 4, H 2Zn, Zn 2) and 5,15-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)porphyrinato-nickel(II) on one end and H 2, Ni, and ZnTriPP on the other (M 211), enable the first studies of this class of compounds possessing intrinsic polarity. The compounds were characterized by electronic absorption and steady state emission spectra, 1H NMR spectra, and for the Ni 2 bis(TriPP) complex Ni 210, single crystal X-ray structure determination. The crystal structure shows ruffled distortions of the porphyrin rings, typical of Ni II porphyrins, and the (E)-C 2H 2 bridge makes a dihedral angle of 50° with the mean planes of the macrocycles. The result is a stepped parallel arrangement of the porphyrin rings. The dihedral angles in the solid state reflect the interplay of steric and electronic effects of the bridge on interporphyrin communication. The emission spectra in particular, suggest energy transfer across the bridge is fast in conformations in which the bridge is nearly coplanar with the rings. Comparisons of the fluorescence behaviour of H 410 and H 2Ni10 show strong quenching of the free base fluorescence when the complex is excited at the lower energy component of the Soret band, a feature associated in the literature with more planar conformations. TDDFT calculations on the gas-phase optimized geometry of Ni 210 reproduce the features of the experimental electronic absorption spectrum within 0.1 eV. © 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The synthesis, electronic absorption and 1H NMR spectra of a suite of novel porphyrinoids derived from meso-bromoporphyrins by palladium-catalysed aminations using ethyl and tert-butylcarbazates are reported. Instead of the expected carbazate-substituted porphyrins, a facile oxidative dearomatisation of the porphyrin ring occurs in high yield, especially for the nickel(II) complexes, resulting in high yields of 5,15-diiminoporphodimethenes (DIPDs). The analogous zinc(II) and free base DIPDs were also characterised, the former by X-ray crystallography. The oxidation and reduction reactions of DIPDs and their precursor carbazate porphyrins were studied. Density Functional Theory (DFT) was used to calculate the optimised geometries and frontier molecular orbitals of DIPD Ni8c and bis(azocarboxylate) 19c, and Time Dependent DFT calculations allowed the prediction of electronic absorption spectra, whose characteristics corresponded well with those of the observed solution spectra. In the latter case, the calculated low-energy absorptions were unlike those of a typical porphyrin, due to the near-degeneracy of the highest filled frontier orbitals, and the wide energy separation between the unfilled orbitals. This feature was present in the observed spectrum.

The reduction of meso-formyl derivatives of 5,15-diaryl- and 5,10,15-triphenylporphyrin (and their nickel(II) complexes) to the corresponding meso-methyl porphyrins is achieved in high yield by microwave heating of the substrate in dimethylformamide (DMF) in the presence of acids such as trifluoroacetic acid, or even just with added water. The reactions are complete in less than 30 min at 250 °C. The reaction is strongly suppressed in very dry DMF in the absence of added acid. The meso-hydroxymethyl porphyrins are also reduced to the methyl derivatives, suggesting the primary alcohols may be intermediates in the exhaustive reduction. UV-visible spectra taken at intervals during reaction at 240 °C indicated that at least one other intermediate is present, but it was not identified. In d7-DMF, the methylporphyrin isolated was mainly Por-CD2H, showing that both of the added hydrogens arise from the solvent, and not from the added water or acid.

A new dearomatized porphyrinoid, 5,10-diiminoporphodimethene (5,10-DIPD), has been prepared by palladium-catalyzed hydrazination of 5,10-dibromo-15,20-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)porphyrin and its nickel(II) complex, by using ethyl and 4-methoxybenzyl carbazates. The oxidative dearomatization of the porphyrin ring occurs in high yield. Further oxidation with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanobenzoquinone forms the corresponding 5,10-bis(azocarboxylates), thereby restoring the porphyrin aromaticity. The UV/visible spectra of the NiII DIPDs exhibit remarkable redshifts of the lowest-energy bands to 780 nm, and differential pulse voltammetry reveals a contracted electrochemical HOMO–LUMO gap of 1.44 V. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to calculate the optimized geometries and frontier molecular orbitals of model 5,10-DIPD Ni7c and 5,10-bis(azocarboxylate) Ni8c. The conformations of the carbamate groups and the configurations of the CNZ unit were considered in conjunction with the NOESY spectra, to generate the global minimum geometry and two other structures with slightly higher energies. In the absence of solution data regarding conformations, ten possible local minimum conformations were considered for Ni8c. Partition of the porphyrin macrocycle into tri- and monopyrrole fragments in Ni7c and the inclusion of terminal conjugating functional groups generate unique frontier molecular orbital distributions and a HOMO–LUMO transition with a strong element of charge transfer from the monopyrrole ring. Time-dependent DFT calculations were performed for the three lowest-energy structures of Ni7c and Ni8c, and weighting according to their energies allowed the prediction of the electronic spectra. The calculations reproduce the lower-energy regions of the spectra and the overall forms of the spectra with high accuracy, but agreement is not as good in the Soret region below 450 nm.

A strategy to tackle the synthesis of azoporphyrins with unsubstituted terminal meso positions was investigated. It comprised the combination of diaza-Diels–Alder (DADA) reaction of 1,3-dienes with dialkyl azodicarboxylates, decarboxylative hydrolysis of the bis(carbamates), palladium-catalyzed amination of bromoporphyrin precursors, and retro-DADA reactions to release the ultimate targets. The somewhat confused historical results on the DADA reactions of 1,3-cyclohexadiene were clarified, but the hydrolyses yielded extremely air-sensitive amines which decomposed completely in minutes via autooxidation and retro-DADA reaction. With anthracene or 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene as the diene, the synthesis of azoporphyrin was not achieved but three amino-substituted porphyrins were obtained in moderate yields under mild conditions. The X-ray crystal structures of several of the intermediates and the final aminoanthracene-porphyrin nickel(II) complex were determined.

Ordinary nickel (II) oxide prepared by any of the usual methods is always contaminated with some higher valency states of nickel. Such nickel oxide however can be converted to pure nickel (II) oxide by soaking for some hours at 800–850°C in a closed system under a static inert atmosphere and in the presence of pure MnO as oxygen-getter. The resulting Ni(IT)O is highly resistant to oxidation.

The crown ethers, 2,3-benzo-1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxa-cyclopentadeca-2-ene and 2,3, ll,12-dibenzo-l,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxscyclooctadeca-2,11-diene are incorporated into H,N'-ethylenebis(acetylacetoneimino) nickel(II) and copper(II), phenol, and β-naphthol by diazo coupling reactions. Schiff bases and their transition metal complexes are of significant current interest even though they have been prepared for decades. They have been used in various applications such as catalysis, corrosion protection, and molecular sensors. In this study, N-aryl Schiff base ketimine ligands as well as numerous new, differently substituted salen and salophen-type ligands and their cobalt(II), copper(II), iron(II), manganese(II), and nickel(II) complexes were synthesised. New solid state structures of the above compounds and the dioxygen coordination properties of cobalt(II) complexes and catalytic properties of three synthesised binuclear complexes were examined. The prepared complexes were applied in the formation of self-assembled layers on a polycrystalline gold surface and liquid-graphite interface. The effect of metal ion and ligand structure on the as-formed patterns was studied. When studying gold surfaces, a unique thiol-assisted dissolution of elemental gold was observed and a new thin gold foil preparation method was introduced. In the summary, synthesis, structures, and properties of Schiff base ligands and their transition metal complexes are described in detail and the applications of these reviewed. Assemblies of other complexes on a liquid-graphite interface and on a gold surface are also presented, and the surface characterisation methods and surfaces employed are described.

alpha-Hydroxides of nickel(II) and cobalt(II) are hydrotalcite-like phases, possessing a layered double hydroxide (LDH) structure even though there are no trivalent cations in the lattice. While the LDHs acquire a positive charge on the hydroxide layers by the incorporation of trivalent cations, we suggest that the alpha-hydroxides acquire a positive charge by partial protonation of the hydroxyl ions according to the equation M(OH)(2)+xH(+) --> [M(OH)(2-x)(H2O)(x)](x+). As in the LDHs, charge balance is restored by the incorporation of anions in the interlayer region. (C) 1997 Academic Press.

A novel catalyst system based on nickel(II) tetraphenylporphyrin (Ni(II)TPP) and methylaluminoxane for styrene polymerization was developed. This catalyst system has a high thermal stability and show fairly good activity. The obtained polystyrene (PS) was isotactic-rich atactic polymer by C-13 NMR analysis, and its molecular weight distribution was rather narrow (M-w/M-n approximate to 1.6, by GPC analysis). ESR revealed that Ni(II)TPP pi cation radicals were formed in the polymerization and could remain in the resulting PS stably. The mechanism of the polymerization was discussed and a special coordination mechanism was proposed. The PS product containing Ni(II)TPP pi cation radicals can be used as a potential functional material.

A series of reactor blends of linear and branched polyethylenes have been prepared, in the presence of modified methylaluminoxane, using a combination of 2,6-bis[1(2,6-dimethyphenylimino) pyridyl]-cobalt(II) dichloride (1), known as an active catalyst for producing linear polyethylene, and [1,4-bis(2,6-diidopropylphenyl)] acenaphthene diimine nickel(II) dibromide (2), which is active for the production of branched polyethylene. The polymerizations were performed at various levels of catalyst feed ratio at 10 bar. The linear correlation between catalyst activity and concentration of catalyst 2 suggested that the catalysts performed independently from each other. The weight-average molecular weights ((M) over bar (w)), crystalline structures, and phase structures of the blends were investigated, using a combination of gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, and small angle X-ray scattering techniques. It was found that the polymerization activities and MWs and crystallization rate of the polymers took decreasing tendency with the increase of the catalyst 2 ratios, while melting temperatures (T-m), crystalline temperatures (T,), and crystalline degrees took decreasing tendency. Long period was distinctly influenced by the amorphous component concentration.

In this paper, the interaction mechanism between La3+ and microperoxidase-11 (MP-11) in the imitated physiological solution was investigated with the electrochemical and spectroscopic methods. It was found that when the molar ratio of La3+, and MP-11 is low, such as 2, La3+ can coordinate with oxygen in the propionic acid group of the heme group in the MP-11 molecule, forming the La-MP-11 complexes and leading to the increase in the non-planarity of the porphyrin cycle in the heme group and then the increase in the extent of exposure of the electrochemically active center, Fe(I I I) in the porphyrin cycle of the heme group. The increase in the extent of exposure of the electrochemically active center, Fe(III) in the porphyrin cycle of the heme group would increase the reversibility of the electrochemical reaction of the La-MP-11 complexes and its electrocatalytic activity for the reduction of H2O2. The results of the chromatographic analysis demonstrated that the average molar ratio of La3+ and MP-11 in the La-MP-11 complexes is 1.62.When the molar ratio of La3+ and MP-11 is high, such as 3, La3+ would shear some amino acid residues of the peptide of MP-11. Therefore, many La3+ ions can bind to the oxygen- and/or nitrogen-containing groups in the sheared amino acid residues except coordinating with the sheared and non-sheared MP-11 molecules.
