In this action research study of my classroom of 7th grade students, enrolled in Pre- Algebra (an 8th grade course), I investigated: rate of homework completion when not taken as part of the academic grade, cognizant self-assessment and its affect on mastery of objectives, and use of self-assessment to guide instruction and re-teaching of classroom objectives. I learned that without sufficient accountability homework completion rates drop with time. Similarly, students can be overconfident in their abilities but unmoved when their summative reports do not match their initial perceived formative benchmarks. Finally, due in part to our society’s reactive nature; students find it more practical to play catch-up rather than staying caught up. As a result of this research, I plan to create, with the help of the students, an accountability statute to help students stay caught up with their understanding of the objectives, as well as allow additional time and energy spent by both student and teacher to react in a timely manner to complete student knowledge within a day or two rather than a week or two later.

There are clear signs that the agro-pastoralists in the Himalayan and Hindu-Kush mountain ranges will have less cropping opportunities due to reduced possibilities for irrigated agriculture as a result of climate change. The importance of extensive livestock production based on well adapted livestock species may once again increase. This calls for a better documentation and understanding of the adaptation capabilities of indigenous breeds considering a changing environment. The current study investigates the adaptive traits of the Azikheli buffalo to mountain environments through calculating mean, standard error and percentages for different variables. Results from this study suggest that the brown coat color, the small body size and the high fertility are adaptive traits of the Azikheli buffalo that may well suit harsh mountainous environment conditions with greater climate variability. Local farmers find it hard to sustain the Azikheli buffalo’s key adaptive traits because of a low bull to buffalo ratio, possibility of insemination with semen from imported breeds and a lack of institutional support to conserve the Azikheli breed. The breed is crucial for sustaining custodian communities in these mountains and thus needs to be conserved.

The purpose of our study was to assess whether prairie voles find alcohol rewarding. Prairie voles have recently become a species of interest for alcohol studies, which have traditionally used other rodent model species including several different strains of mice and rats. The prairie vole is one of only two known rodent species that readily administers high levels of unsweetened alcohol, implicating it as a potentially effective animal model for studying alcohol abuse. However, voluntary consumption does not necessarily imply that prairie voles find it rewarding. Therefore the purpose of our study was to investigate if alcohol has rewarding properties for prairie voles using three different approaches: place conditioning, flavor conditioning, and immunohistochemistry. Furthermore, we sought to characterize their reward profile and compare it to other commonly used rodent models ¿ C57BL/6 mice, DBA/2J mice, and Sprague-Dawley rats. Place and flavor conditioning are behavioral methods that rely on the learned association between a stimulus and the effects of a drug; the drug of interest in these studies is alcohol. To assess whether prairie voles will demonstrate a conditioned preference for alcohol-paired stimuli, seven place conditioning studies were run that investigated a range of different doses, individual conditioning session durations, and trial durations. Video analysis revealed no difference in the amount of time spent on the alcohol-paired floor, suggesting no conditioned place preference for alcohol. Two flavor conditioning tests were conducted to assess whether voles would demonstrate a preference for an alcohol-paired flavored saccharin solution. Voles demonstrated reduced consumption of the alcohol-paired flavored saccharin solution, regardless of dose or flavor, when alcohol administration occurred after conditioning sessions (p=<0.001). When alcohol was administered before conditioning sessions, no difference in consumption of the alcohol-paired and saline-paired flavored saccharin solutions was seen (p=0.545). Previous studies that have documented similar behavior have hypothesized that this is an example of an anticipatory contrast effect. This theory proposes that prairie voles reduce their intake of a hedonic solution (flavored saccharin solution) in anticipation of later drug administration (alcohol). However, conditioning-based behavioral methods of studying alcohol reward are highly sensitive to the parameters of the conditioned stimulus, thus it is possible that voles will not show preference for alcohol-related stimuli, even if they do find alcohol rewarding. Immunohistochemical analysis supplemented this behavioral data by allowing us to identify specific neural regions that were directly activated in response to the acute administration of alcohol. No difference in the number of activated c-Fos neurons in the Nucleus Accumbens (NAc) core or shell was seen (p=0.3364; p=0.6698) in animals that received an acute injection of alcohol or saline. There was a significant increase in the number of activated c-Fos neurons in the Paraventricular Nucleus of the Hypothalamus (PVN) in alcohol-treated animals compared to saline-treated animals (p=0.0034). There was no difference in the pixel count of activated c-Fos neurons or in the % area activated in the Arcuate Nucleus between alcohol and saline-treated animals (p=0.4523; p=0.3304). In conclusion, the place conditioning studies that were conducted in this thesis suggest that prairie voles do not demonstrate preference or aversion towards alcohol-paired stimuli. The flavor conditioning studies suggest that prairie voles do not demonstrate aversion but rather avoidance of the alcohol-paired flavor in anticipation of future alcohol administration. The preliminary immunohistochemical data collected is inconclusive but cannot rule out the possibility of neuronal activation patterns indicative of reward. The number of record-breaking events expected to occur in a strictly stationary time-series depends only on the number of values in the time-series, regardless of distribution. This holds whether the events are record-breaking highs or lows and whether we count from past to present or present to past. However, these symmetries are broken in distinct ways by trends in the mean and variance. We define indices that capture this information and use them to detect weak trends from multiple time-series. Here, we use these methods to answer the following questions: (1) Is there a variability trend among globally distributed surface temperature time-series? We find a significant decreasing variability over the past century for the Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN). This corresponds to about a 10% change in the standard deviation of inter-annual monthly mean temperature distributions. (2) How are record-breaking high and low surface temperatures in the United States affected by time period? We investigate the United States Historical Climatology Network (USHCN) and find that the ratio of record-breaking highs to lows in 2006 increases as the time-series extend further into the past. When we consider the ratio as it evolves with respect to a fixed start year, we find it is strongly correlated with the ensemble mean. We also compare the ratios for USHCN and GHCN (minus USHCN stations). We find the ratios grow monotonically in the GHCN data set, but not in the USHCN data set. (3) Do we detect either mean or variance trends in annual precipitation within the United States? We find that the total annual and monthly precipitation in the United States (USHCN) has increased over the past century. Evidence for a trend in variance is inconclusive.

While empirical evidence continues to show that people living in low socio-economic status neighbourhoods are less likely to engage in health-enhancing behaviour, our understanding of why this is so remains less than clear. We suggest that two changes could take place to move from description to understanding in this field; (i) a move away from the established concept of individual health behaviour to a contextualised understanding of health practices; and (ii) a switch from focusing on health inequalities in outcomes to health inequities in conditions. We apply Pierre Bourdieu's theory on capital interaction but find it insufficient with regard to the role of agency for structural change. We therefore introduce Amartya Sen's capability approach as a useful link between capital interaction theory and action to reduce social inequities in health-related practices. Sen's capability theory also elucidates the importance of discussing unequal chances in terms of inequity, rather than inequality, in order to underscore the moral nature of inequalities. We draw on the discussion in social geography on environmental injustice, which also underscores the moral nature of the spatial distribution of opportunities. The article ends by applying this approach to the 'Interdisciplinary study of inequalities in smoking' framework.

Recent findings demonstrate that trees in deserts are efficient carbon sinks. It remains however unknown whether the Clean Development Mechanism will accelerate the planting of trees in Non Annex I dryland countries. We estimated the price of carbon at which a farmer would be indifferent between his customary activity and the planting of trees to trade carbon credits, along an aridity gradient. Carbon yields were simulated by means of the CO2FIX v3.1 model for Pinus halepensis with its respective yield classes along the gradient (Arid – 100mm to Dry Sub Humid conditions – 900mm). Wheat and pasture yields were predicted on somewhat similar nitrogen-based quadratic models, using 30 years of weather data to simulate moisture stress. Stochastic production, input and output prices were afterwards simulated on a Monte Carlo matrix. Results show that, despite the high levels of carbon uptake, carbon trading by afforesting is unprofitable anywhere along the gradient. Indeed, the price of carbon would have to raise unrealistically high, and the certification costs would have to drop significantly, to make the Clean Development Mechanism worthwhile for non annex I dryland countries farmers. From a government agency's point of view the Clean Development Mechanism is attractive. However, such agencies will find it difficult to demonstrate “additionality”, even if the rule may be somewhat flexible. Based on these findings, we will further discuss why the Clean Development Mechanism, a supposedly pro-poor instrument, fails to assist farmers in Non Annex I dryland countries living at minimum subsistence level.

UNLABELLED OBJECTIVE; Virtual autopsy methods, such as postmortem CT and MRI, are increasingly being used in forensic medicine. Forensic investigators with little to no training in diagnostic radiology and medical laypeople such as state's attorneys often find it difficult to understand the anatomic orientation of axial postmortem CT images. We present a computer-assisted system that permits postmortem CT datasets to be quickly and intuitively resliced in real time at the body to narrow the gap between radiologic imaging and autopsy. CONCLUSION Our system is a potentially valuable tool for planning autopsies, showing findings to medical laypeople, and teaching CT anatomy, thus further closing the gap between radiology and forensic pathology.

Many first-year teachers find it difficult to reach the needs of all their students in part, because they feel their college coursework left them ill-prepared for the complexity they face in the classroom. This is particularly true among urban teachers who often face crowded classrooms of diverse students with a wide range of instructional needs. This study is a comparative case study of two University of Connecticut graduates during their first year teaching in urban schools. Using mixed-methods, the study draws on interviews, questionnaires, and videotape data shared as a part of a monthly teacher study group of similar graduates. I also draw on group conversations in which teachers discussed their ability to reach the needs of all of their students as this was related to their preservice coursework. My findings suggest that many first-year teachers feel university coursework failed to help them. One teacher felt it did not help her at all, while the other felt it helped her but she still could not meet all of her students' needs. Many first-year, urban teachers do not feel confident in the classroom as a result of their preparation from coursework. With this lack in confidence, the teachers may be more likely to leave their urban position, and this may contribute to the high turnover of teachers in urban placements.

Church and state have historically had an uneasy relationship, sometimes close allies, at others harsh adversaries, and at still others largely independent of one another. This paper develops an economic model of this relationship, where the state's objective is to maximize net tax revenue, while the church provides religious goods. Religious goods benefit the state in two ways: first, they provide utility to citizens, thus allowing the state to extract more taxes before running up against citizens' reservation utility (the point at which they would revolt), and second, they potentially provide legitimacy to the state, thereby lowering the costs of tax collection. If the latter effect is strong enough, the state may find it optimal to take control of the church, either to enhance its legitimizing effect, or to suppress its de-legitimizing effect. To evaluate the model's implications, we use recent cross-country data on the relationship between religion and state, including measures coded from the 2001, 2003, and 2005 International Religious Freedom reports. We also examine in more detail some of the paradigmatic cases indicated by the model, presenting various types of evidence from current and historical examples of each case.

Multi-center clinical trials are very common in the development of new drugs and devices. One concern in such trials, is the effect of individual investigational sites enrolling small numbers of patients on the overall result. Can the presence of small centers cause an ineffective treatment to appear effective when treatment-by-center interaction is not statistically significant?^ In this research, simulations are used to study the effect that centers enrolling few patients may have on the analysis of clinical trial data. A multi-center clinical trial with 20 sites is simulated to investigate the effect of a new treatment in comparison to a placebo treatment. Twelve of these 20 investigational sites are considered small, each enrolling less than four patients per treatment group. Three clinical trials are simulated with sample sizes of 100, 170 and 300. The simulated data is generated with various characteristics, one in which treatment should be considered effective and another where treatment is not effective. Qualitative interactions are also produced within the small sites to further investigate the effect of small centers under various conditions.^ Standard analysis of variance methods and the "sometimes-pool" testing procedure are applied to the simulated data. One model investigates treatment and center effect and treatment-by-center interaction. Another model investigates treatment effect alone. These analyses are used to determine the power to detect treatment-by-center interactions, and the probability of type I error.^ We find it is difficult to detect treatment-by-center interactions when only a few investigational sites enrolling a limited number of patients participate in the interaction. However, we find no increased risk of type I error in these situations. In a pooled analysis, when the treatment is not effective, the probability of finding a significant treatment effect in the absence of significant treatment-by-center interaction is well within standard limits of type I error. ^

The chapbooks created in the year ending in June 2012 include eleven themed collections and three installments of “In Thirteen Moons,” which didn’t get completed till that fall. This Wildest Year brings together the poems of the eleven themed chapbooks, each as a separate chapter. I have e-published this book for three reasons. First, the chapbooks have all been printed in very limited runs, and few copies remain to be shared with friends, old and new. Second, by ordering the chapters more or less chronologically, one can more easily see themes unfold and new connections made. And finally, this e-book is a bit of an experiment, allowing me to develop skills in self-publishing and graphic design. I hope you will find it to be a successful experiment.

Shell fluxes of planktonic Foraminifera species vary intra-annually in a pattern that appears to follow the seasonal cycle. However, the variation in the timing and prominence of seasonal flux maxima in space and among species remains poorly constrained. Thus, although changing seasonality may result in a flux-weighted temperature offset of more than 5° C within a species, this effect is often ignored in the interpretation of Foraminifera-based paleoceanographic records. To address this issue we present an analysis of the intra-annual pattern of shell flux variability in 37 globally distributed time series. The existence of a seasonal component in flux variability was objectively characterised using periodic regression. This analysis yielded estimates of the number, timing and prominence of seasonal flux maxima. Over 80% of the flux series across all species showed a statistically significant periodic component, indicating that a considerable part of the intra-annual flux variability is predictable. Temperature appears to be a powerful predictor of flux seasonality, but its effect differs among species. Three different modes of seasonality are distinguishable. Tropical and subtropical species (Globigerinoides ruber (white and pink varieties), Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, Globigerinoides sacculifer, Orbulina universa, Globigerinella siphonifera, Pulleniatina obliquiloculata, Globorotalia menardii, Globoturborotalita rubescens, Globoturborotalita tenella and Globigerinoides conglobatus) appear to have a less predictable flux pattern, with random peak timing in warm waters. In colder waters, seasonality is more prevalent: peak fluxes occur shortly after summer temperature maxima and peak prominence increases. This tendency is stronger in species with a narrower temperature range, implying that warm-adapted species find it increasingly difficult to reproduce outside their optimum temperature range and that, with decreasing mean temperature, their flux is progressively more focussed in the warm season. The second group includes the temperate to cold-water species Globigerina bulloides, Globigerinita glutinata, Turborotalita quinqueloba, Neogloboquadrina incompta, Neogloboquadrina pachyderma, Globorotalia scitula, Globigerinella calida, Globigerina falconensis, Globorotalia theyeri and Globigerinita uvula. These species show a highly predictable seasonal pattern, with one to two peaks a year, which occur earlier in warmer waters. Peak prominence in this group is independent of temperature. The earlier-when-warmer pattern in this group is related to the timing of productivity maxima. Finally, the deep-dwelling Globorotalia truncatulinoides and Globorotalia inflata show a regular and pronounced peak in winter and spring. The remarkably low flux outside the main pulse may indicate a long reproductive cycle of these species. Overall, our analysis indicates that the seasonality of planktonic Foraminifera shell flux is predictable and reveals the existence of distinct modes of phenology among species. We evaluate the effect of changing seasonality on paleoceanographic reconstructions and find that, irrespective of the seasonality mode, the actual magnitude of environmental change will be underestimated. The observed constraints on flux seasonality can serve as the basis for predictive modelling of flux pattern. As long as the diversity of species seasonality is accounted for in such models, the results can be used to improve reconstructions of the magnitude of environmental change in paleoceanographic records.

El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar la interpretación léxico-gramatical de la relación participante-proceso en textos en inglés y evaluar su incidencia en la efectividad de los resúmenes de dichos textos en español. Utilizando el marco de la Lingüística Sistémico-Funcional (Halliday, 1985, 1994, 2004), se realizó un análisis tripartito de diez resúmenes en español de una noticia periodística en inglés sobre deportes, escritos por alumnos de la carrera de Profesorado de Educación Física de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata en una instancia de evaluación final de la asignatura Capacitación en Inglés-Nivel II. En base a la Teoría del Registro y el Género (Martin y Eggins, 1997), se evaluó la incidencia de las relaciones lingüísticas a nivel de Contexto de Situación (Registro) y Contexto de Cultura (Género). También se solicitó la colaboración de un grupo de colegas para que dieran una opinión adicional sobre la efectividad de los resúmenes. A partir del análisis de los textos meta se pudo observar que aquellos escritores que muestran más dificultades para identificar la relación participante-proceso construyen resúmenes menos efectivos. Este menor grado de efectividad aparece como consecuencia de determinadas selecciones léxico-gramaticales. Por otro lado, la identificación de la relación participante proceso en el texto fuente parece incidir directamente en la construcción de la adecuada estructura genérica del texto meta. En conclusión, la identificación de la relación participante-proceso en textos en inglés puede considerarse central para la construcción de resúmenes efectivos en español

El presente trabajo pretende reflexionar sobre los desafíos que la sociedad atravesada por las tecnologías le presenta a las prácticas educativas. Para esto nos introduciremos en el contexto uruguayo y en el Plan CEIBAL específicamente, como ejemplo de una política educativa que busca acompasar la educación con la realidad actual. Como futuros docentes de Historia, nos interesa profundizar en la educación en y con las tecnologías como alternativa didáctica para superar las dificultades pedagógicas que se plantean a partir de los obstáculos historiográficos que presenta la Edad Media
