Concept maps are a technique used to obtain a visual representation of a person's ideas about a concept or a set of related concepts. Specifically, in this paper, through a qualitative methodology, we analyze the concept maps proposed by 52 groups of teacher training students in order to find out the characteristics of the maps and the degree of adequacy of the contents with regard to the teaching of human nutrition in the 3rd cycle of primary education. The participants were enrolled in the Teacher Training Degree majoring in Primary Education, and the data collection was carried out through a training activity under the theme of what to teach about Science in Primary School? The results show that the maps are a useful tool for working in teacher education as they allow organizing, synthesizing, and communicating what students know. Moreover, through this work, it has been possible to see that future teachers have acceptable skills for representing the concepts/ideas in a concept map, although the level of adequacy of concepts/ideas about human nutrition and its relations is usually medium or low. These results are a wake-up call for teacher training, both initial and ongoing, because they shows the inability to change priorities as far as the selection of content is concerned.

Queensland fruit fly, Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a major horticultural insect pest in Australia which significantly limits domestic and international market access for Australian horticultural produce. Citrus is one of the industries seriously affected by the fruit fly problem in Australia. This research investigated the effect of citrus peel essential oil chemicals on B. tryoni larval survival in five different commercially important Citrus species and cultivars as a way of better understanding fruit susceptibility. The fruits used were Murcott Mandarin, Navel orange, Eureka lemon, Valencia orange and yellow grapefruit. The essential oils of each citrus type were extracted using hydrodistillation and then mixed, at different concentrations, with artificial larval diets to which B. tryoni eggs were added. Surviving larvae were counted after five trial days. The same process was repeated for six essential oil components. Regression analysis of increasing oil concentration against larval survival showed that the crude oil blends of Navel orange, Eureka lemon and yellow grapefruit had significant negative effects on B. tryoni larval survival, but no such effects were seen for Murcott Mandarin and Valencia orange. Of the individual essential oil fractions, only D-limonene had a significant effect on B. tryoni larval survival, with this chemical being highly toxic at very low concentrations. The results of this study open up opportunities for incorporating B. tryoni resistance mechanisms into citrus through minor peel property changes which would not impact on the eating attributes of the fruit.

Abstract : This is a study concerning comparisons between the Dubovik Aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrievals from AEROCAN (ARONET) stations and AOD estimates from simulations provided by a chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem : Goddard Earth Observing System Chemistry). The AOD products associated with the Dubovik product are divided into total, fine and coarse mode components. The retrieval period is from January 2009 to January 2013 for 5 Arctic stations (Barrow, Alaska; Resolute Bay, Nunavut; 0PAL and PEARL (Eureka), Nunavut; and Thule, Greenland). We also employed AOD retrievals from 10 other mid-latitude Canadian stations for comparisons with the Arctic stations. The results of our investigation were submitted to Atmosphere-Ocean. To briefly summarize those results, the model generally but not always tended to underestimate the (monthly) averaged AOD and its components. We found that the subdivision into fine and coarse mode components could provide unique signatures of particular events (Asian dust) and that the means of characterizing the statistics (log-normal frequency distributions versus normal distributions) was an attribute that was common to both the retrievals and the model.
