Ultasonic spray pyrolysis (SP) has been investigated for the production of the barium strontium titanate (BST) powders from the polymeric precursors. The processing parameters, such as flux of aerosol and temperature profile inside the furnace, were optimized to obtain single phase BST. The powders were characterized by the methods of X-ray diffraction analysis, SEM, EDS and TEM. The obtained powders were submicronic, consisting of spherical, polycrystalline particles, with internal nanocrystalline structure. Crystallite size of 10 nut, calculated using Rietveld refinement, is in a good agreement with results of HRTEM. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work, carbon-supported Pt70Co30 nanoparticles were prepared by a polyol process using a long-chain diol as reducer (hexadecanediol) and oleic acid and oleylamine as stabilizers. Depending on the synthesis conditions, Pt70Co30/C nanocatalysts with very small particle size (1.9 +/- 0.2 nm) and narrow distribution homogeneously dispersed on the carbon support and having a high degree of alloying without the need of thermal treatments were obtained. The as-prepared catalyst presents an excellent performance as proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) cathode material. In terms of mass activity (MA), the Pt70Co30/C electrocatalysts produced single fuel cell polarization response superior to that of commercial catalyst. To analyze alloying effects, the result of thermal treatment at low temperatures (200-400 degrees C) was also evaluated and an increase of average crystallite size and a lower degree of alloying, probably associated to cobalt oxidation, were evidenced.

Nickel ferrite powders with a nominal NiFe2O4 composition were synthesized by combustion reaction using urea as fuel. The powder was obtained using a vitreous silica basin heated directly on a hot plate at 480 degrees C until self-ignition occurred. After combustion, the powder was calcined at 700 degrees C for 2 h. The formation of the spinel phase and the distribution of cations in the tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the crystal structure were investigated by the Rietveld method, using synchrotron X-ray diffraction data and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The material presented a crystallite size of 120 nm and magnetic properties. The resulting stoichiometry after the Rietveld refinement was (Fe-0.989(2) Ni-0.011(2)) [Fe-1.012(2) Ni-0.989(2)] O-4.

BaTiO(3) powders were prepared through mechanical activation chemistry and analyzed by Rietveld refinement with X-ray diffraction data. Raw BaCO(3) and TiO(2) powders were dry milled for 5 and 20 h and then calcinated for 2 and 4 h at 800 degrees C. The milling process was found to have broken up the BaCO(3) and TiO(2) crystals into smaller crystals and formed only small amounts ( 1.5 wt%) of BaTiO(3). Subsequence calcinations for 2 and 4 h at 800 degrees C successfully produced large amounts (>97.7 wt%) of BaTiO(3) crystals. The calcination process also generated microstrains and crystallite-size anisotropy in BaTiO(3). An increase in the calcination time from 2 to 4 h increased the BaTiO(3) weight percentage and the crystal lite-shape anisotropy, but decreased the tetragonal distortion anisotropic microstrains in BaTiO(3) crystals. Nanosized bismuth titanate was prepared via high-energy ball milling process through mechanically assisted synthesis directly from their oxide mixture of Bi2O3 and TiO2. Only Bi4Ti3O12 phase was formed after 3 h of milling time. The excess of 3 wt% Bi2O3 added in the initial mixture before milling does not improve significantly the formation of Bi4Ti3O12 phase comparing to stoichiometric mixture. The formed phase was amorphized independently of the milling time, The Rietveld analysis was adopted to determine the crystal structure symmetry, amount of amorphous phase, crystallite size and microstrains. With increasing the milling time from 3 to 12 h, the particle size of formed Bi4Ti3O12 did not reduced significantly. That was confirmed by SEM and TEM analysis. The particle size was less than 20 nm and show strong tendency to agglomeration. The electron diffraction pattern indicates that Bi4Ti3O12 crystalline powder is embedded in an amorphous phase of bismuth titanate. Phase composition and atom ratio in BIT ceramics were determined by X-ray diffraction and EDS analysis. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Nanocrystalline ZrO2-12 mol % CeO2 powders were synthesized using a polymeric precursor method based on the Pechini process. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showed that the method was effective to synthesize tetragonal zirconia single-phase. The mean crystallite size attained ranges from 6 to 15 nm. The BET surface areas were relatively high reaching 97 m(2)/g. Studies by nitrogen adsorption/desorption on powders, dilatometry of the compacts, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of the powders, were also developed to verify the particles agglomeration state. Both citric acid : ethylene glycol ratio and calcination temperature affected the powder morphology, which influenced the sinterability and microstructure of the sintered material, as showed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The ZnO luminescent properties are strongly influenced by the preparation method and they are principally related to electronic and crystalline structures. This work reports about the correlation among luminescence properties of ZnO, obtained from zinc hydroxycarbonate, and crystalline lattice defects, microstrain, as function of thermal treatment. The crystallite size increase and the qualitative microstrain, obtained by Williamson-Hall plots, decrease as function of temperature. The evolution of electronic defects is analyzed by luminescence spectroscopy based on energy of the electronic transitions. From excitation spectrum, it is verified two bands around 377 nm and 405 nm attributed to the transitions between valence-conduction bands and valence band to interstitial zinc level, respectively. The emission spectra of sample treated at 600 degreesC shows large band at 670 nm. However, the green emission around 530 nm is observed for samples treated at 900 degreesC. The intensities of excitation and emission bands are associated with the increase of the electronic defects that depend on the strain lattice decrease. The lowest strain lattice results on the best green luminescent properties of zinc oxide. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

Transparent thin films of nanocrystalline anatase were obtained by dip-coating process using an ethanolic suspension of redispersed nanoparticles. This suspension was prepared by sol-gel route and their redispersability achieved by surface grafting of para-toluene-sulfonic acid and acetylacetone. The effects of the acetylacetone content on the powder redispersibility and on the structural evolution of films were determined by small angle X-ray scattering, X-ray reflectometry and X-ray diffraction for different firing temperatures. The results demonstrated that the porous structure of the studied films consist of agglomerates of primary particles with two levels of porosity. The control of the amount of capping ligand allows for a fine-tuning of the average pore size of the dried films. Upon increasing the firing temperature up to 500 degrees C, progressive increase in apparent density, average pore size of films and average crystallite size of powders were observed. This work reports on the preparation, structural and luminescent studies of nanosized up-converter phosphors Y2O2S:Yb(4%), Er(0.1%) and Y2O2S:Yb(4%), Tm(0.1%),both from polymeric and basic carbonate precursors. The precursors were submitted to a sulphuration process that was previously developed for oxysulfide preparation from basic carbonate. From XRD data, all phosphors presented the oxysulfide phase and the mean crystallite size estimated from the Scherrer formula in the range of 15-20 nm. Polymeric precursor leads to the smallest crystallite size independent on the doping ion. SEM and TEM results confirmed that basic carbonate leads to spherical particles with narrow size distribution and mean diameter of 150 nm, and polymeric precursor smaller spherical particles with diameter between 20 and 40 nm. Up-conversion studies under 980 nm laser excitation showed that Er-doped phosphors present strong green emission related to H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2) --> I-4(15/2) Er transitions as well as the red ones, F-4(9/2) --> I-4(15/2). Tm-doped samples show strong blue emission assigned to (1)G(4) --> H-3(6) and also the red ones, related to (1)G(4) --> F-3(4). Therefore, the sulphuration method was successfully applied to prepare nanosized and nanostructured blue and green up-converter oxysulfide phosphors starting from basic carbonate and polymeric precursors. Tin dioxide (SnO2) thin film photoconductivity spectra were measured for a large temperature range using a deuterium source, the intensity of photocurrent spectra in the range 200-400 nm is temperature dependent, and the photocurrent increases in the ultraviolet even for illumination with photon energies much higher than the bandgap transition. This behavior is related to recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs with oxygen adsorbed at grain boundaries, which is consistent with nanoscopic crystallite size of sol-gel deposited films. Co-doped alumina powders were synthesized by means of the polymeric precursor method to obtain ceramic pigments. The effect of different contents of Co2+ on phase transition gamma to alpha-Al2O3 and appearing of CoAl2O4 spinel were studied by means of X-ray diffraction. A partial phase diagram of the system CoAl2O3 was proposed from these data by means of determination of the percentages of these phases according to the calcining temperature. Critical particle size to phase transition was determined by means of calculations of crystallite size and determination of superficial area through the BET method. UV-vis spectroscopy of the samples allow to compare the band shift with the phase transition. Besides, a study of thermal stability and intensity of the blue coloration of the synthesized powders with the presence of cobalt in relation to the calcining temperature was accomplished and compared to the phase transition. The results show that the higher blue color intensity was obtained for the powders with Co-doped gamma-Al2O3 closest of phase transition to alpha-Al2O3 + CoAl2O4. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Thin films of BaBi2Ta2O9 (BBT) composition were prepared through the metal organic decomposition method. The crystallinity, phase formation, crystallite size and morphology of the thin films were measured as a function of the type of substrate, stoichiometry of solution and process variables such as thickness and temperature. The thin films were investigated by grazing incidence X-ray diffractometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. For the sample without excess of bismuth, diffraction peaks other than that of the BBT phase were observed. A well crystallized BBT single phase was observed for films prepared from a solution with 10% excess of bismuth, deposited on Si/Pt substrate, with a thickness up to 150 nm and sintered at temperatures of 700 degreesC. The thin BBT phase films heat-treated at 600 degreesC presented a diffraction pattern characteristic of samples with lower degree of crystallinity whereas for the thin films heat-treated at 800 degreesC, we observed the presence of other phases than the BBT. For the thin film deposited on the Sin+ substrate, we observe that the peaks corresponding to the BBT phase are broader than that observed on the samples deposited on the Pt and Si/Pt substrates. No variation of average crystallite size was observed as the excess of Bi increased from 10 to 20%. AFM images for the samples showed that the increasing the amount of bismuth promotes grain growth. The average surface roughness measured was in the range of 16-22 nm showing that the bismuth amount had no or little effect on the roughness of films. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

This work describes the chemical modification by Tiron(R) molecules of the surface of SnO2 nanoparticles used to prepare nanoporous membranes. Samples prepared with Tiron(R) content between 1 and 20 wt% and fired at 400 C were characterised by X-Ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD), Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS), N-2 adsorption isotherms analysis and permeation experiments. XRPD and EXAFS results show a continuous reduction of crystallite size by increasing the Tiron(R) contents until 7.5 wt%. The control exercised by Tiron(R) modifying agent in crystallite growth allows the fine tuning of the average pore size that can be screened from 0.4 to 4 nm as the amount of grafted molecules decreases from 10 to 0 wt%. In consequence, the membrane cut-off can be screened from 1500 to 3500 g.mol(-1).
