The chemistry in a protoplanetary accretion disk is modelled between a radius of 100 and 0.1 AU of the central object. We find that interaction of the gas with the dust grains is very important, both by removing a large fraction of the material from the gas in the outer regions and through the chemical reactions which can occur on the dust grain surfaces. In addition, collision with grains neutralises gaseous ions effectively and keeps the ionization fraction low. This results in a chemistry which is dominated by neutral-neutral reactions, even if ionization is provided by cosmic rays or by the decay of radioactive isotopes. We model the effects of two desorption processes with very different efficiencies and find that while these produce similar results over much of the disk for many species, some molecules are extremely sensitive to the nature of the desorption and may one day be used as an observational test for the desorption process.

As part of a programme to investigate spatial variations in the Galactic chemical composition, we have been searching for normal B-type stars and A-type supergiants near the Galactic center. During this search we have found eleven peculiar stars, and in some cases performed detailed abundance analyses of them which suggest that they may be at a post-AGB evolutionary stage.

High resolution spectra of an early B-type star associated with the H II region detected by de Geus et al. (1993) are analysed using LTE model atmosphere techniques to derive stellar atmospheric parameters and a chemical composition. A distance to the star of 8.2 kpc is estimated, placing it near the edge of the galactic disk and closer than the kinematic distance of 20 kpc to the H II region, calculated by de Geus et al. A differential line by line abundance analysis with respect to the spectroscopic standard tau Sco indicates a significant metal depletion, with elements down on average by -0.5 dex.

Experimental static and fatigue tension-tension tests were carried out on 5HS/RTM6 composite intact coupons and coupons incorporating adhesively-bonded (FM300-2) stepped flush joints. The results show that the adhesive joint, which is widely used in repairs, significantly reduces the static strength as well as the fatigue life of the composite. Both, the static and the fatigue failure of the ‘repaired’ coupons occur at the adhesive joint and involve crack initiation and propagation. The latter is modelled using interface finite elements based on the decohezive zone approach. The material degradation in the interface constitutive law is described by a damage variable, which can evolve due to the applied loads as well as the number of fatigue cycles. The fatigue formulation, based on a published model, is adapted to fit the framework of the pseudotransient formulation that is used as a numerical tool to overcome convergence difficulties. The fatigue model requires three material parameters. Numerical tests show that a single set of these parameters can be used to recover, very accurately, the experimental S-N relationship. Sensitivity studies show that the results are not mesh dependent.

Star formation often occurs within or nearby stellar clusters. Irradiation by nearby massive stars can photoevaporate protoplanetary disks around young stars (so-called proplyds) which raises questions regarding the ability of planet formation to take place in these environments. We investigate the two-dimensional physical and chemical structure of a protoplanetary disk surrounding a low-mass (T Tauri) star which is irradiated by a nearby massive O-type star to determine the survivability and observability of molecules in proplyds. Compared with an isolated star-disk system, the gas temperature ranges from a factor of a few (in the disk midplane) to around two orders of magnitude (in the disk surface) higher in the irradiated disk. Although the UV flux in the outer disk, in particular, is several orders of magnitude higher, the surface density of the disk is sufficient for effective shielding of the disk midplane so that the disk remains predominantly molecular in nature. We also find that non-volatile molecules, such as HCN and H2O, are able to freeze out onto dust grains in the disk midplane so that the formation of icy planetesimals, e.g., comets, may also be possible in proplyds. We have calculated the molecular line emission from the disk assuming LTE and determined that multiple transitions of atomic carbon, CO (and isotopologues, 13CO and C18O), HCO+, CN, and HCN may be observable with ALMA, allowing characterization of the gas column density, temperature, and optical depth in proplyds at the distance of Orion (˜400 pc).

We have modeled a small sample of Seyfert galaxies that were previously identified as having simple X-ray spectra with little intrinsic absorption. The sources in this sample all contain moderately broad components of FeK-shell emission and are ideal candidates for testing the applicability of a Compton-thick accretion disk wind model to active galactic nucleus (AGN) emission components. Viewing angles through the wind allow the observer to see the absorption signature of the gas, whereas face-on viewing angles allow the observer to see the scattered light from the wind. We find that the FeK emission line profiles are well described with a model of a Compton-thick accretion disk wind of solar abundances, arising tens to hundreds of gravitational radii from the central black hole. Further, the fits require a neutral component of FeKa emission that is too narrow to arise from the inner part of the wind, and likely comes from a more distant reprocessing region. Our study demonstrates that a Compton-thick wind can have a profound effect on the observed X-ray spectrum of an AGN, even when the system is not viewed through the flow. © 2012. PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical agreement in the detection of optic disk changes in patients with glaucoma using simultaneous stereophotographs. DESIGN: Masked-observer variability study. METHODS: Ten glaucoma specialists examined pairs of simultaneous stereophotographs of glaucomatous and control optic disks to determine whether there were changes compatible with progression of glaucomatous damage. RESULTS: Intraobserver agreement had a kappa value ranging from 0.55 to 0.78. Interobserver agreement among the glaucoma specialists had a kappa value ranging from 0.34 to 0.68. CONCLUSION: Clinical examination of stereophotographs to detect optic disk changes in glaucoma patients has limitations associated with suboptimal reproducibility. © 2003 by Elsevier Inc. Objective: To compare the reproducibility of optic disk measurements provided by an image analyzer and a scanning laser tomograph. Methods: Ten images of the same eye of 10 normal volunteers were taken with the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph and with the Topcon ImageNet. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and coefficient of variation (CV) were used to evaluate the reproducibility of the measurements. Results: Eleven parameters were analyzed with the Topcon ImageNet. Six parameters (55%) had ICC greater than 90%. Four parameters (36%) had CV less than 10%. Twelve parameters were evaluated with the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph. Nine parameters (75%) had ICC over 90%. Nine parameters (75%) had CV less than 10%. Conclusion: Both systems provided reproducible data. The optic disk parameters provided by the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph had a better reproducibility than those obtained from the Topcon ImageNet.

Objective: The aim of this research is to use finite element analysis (FEA) to quantify the effect of the sample shape and the imperfections induced during the manufacturing process of samples on the bond strength and modes of failure of dental adhesive systems through microtensile test. Using the FEA prediction for individual parameters effect, estimation of expected variation and spread of the microtensile bond strength results for different sample geometries is made. Methods: The estimated stress distributions for three different sample shapes, hourglass, stick and dumbbell predicted by FEA are used to predict the strength for different fracture modes. Parameters such as the adhesive thickness, uneven interface of the adhesive and composite and dentin, misalignment of axis of loading, the existence of flaws such as induced cracks during shaping the samples or bubbles created during application of the adhesive are considered. Microtensile experiments are performed simultaneously to measure bond strength and modes of failure. These are compared with the FEA results. Results: The relative bonding strength and its standard deviation for the specimens with different geometries measured through the microtensile tests confirm the findings of the FEA. The hourglass shape samples show lower tensile bond strength and standard deviation compared to the stick and dumbbell shape samples. ANOVA analysis confirms no significant difference between dumbbell and stick geometry results, and major differences of these two geometries compared to hourglass shape measured values. Induced flaws in the adhesive and misalignment of the angle of application of load have significant effect on the microtensile bond strength. Using adhesive with higher modulus the differences between the bond strength of the three sample geometries increase. Significance: The result of the research clarifies the importance of the sample geometry chosen in measuring the bond strength. It quantifies the effect of the imperfections on the bond strength for each of the sample geometries through a systematic and all embracing study. The results explain the reasons of the large spread of the microtensile test results reported by various researchers working in different labs and the need for standardization of the test method and sample shape used in evaluation of the dentin-adhesive bonding system. © 2007 Academy of Dental Materials.
