Creativity is often defined as developing something novel or new, that fits its context, and has value. To achieve this, the creative process itself has gained increasing attention as organizational leaders seek competitive advantages through developing new products, services, process, or business models. In this paper, we explore the notion of the creative process as including a series of “filters” or ways to process information as being a critical component of the creative process. We use the metaphor of coffee making and filters because many of our examples come from Vietnam, which is one of the world’s top coffee exporters and which has created a coffee culture rivaling many other countries. We begin with a brief review of the creative process its connection to information processing, propose a tentative framework for integrating the two ideas, and provide examples of how it might work. We close with implications for further practical and theoretical directions for this idea.

A variation of the least means squares (LMS) algorithm, called the delayed LMS (DLMS) algorithm is an ideally suited to achieve highly pipelined, adaptive digital filter implementations. The paper presents an efficient method of determining the delays in the DLMS filter and then transferring these delays using retiming in order to achieve fully pipelined circuit architectures for FPGA implementation. The method has been used to derive a series of retimed delayed LMS (RDLMS) architectures, which considerable reduce the number of delays and convergence time and give superior performance in terms of throughput rate when compared to previous work. Three circuit architectures and three hardware shared versions are presented which have been implemented using the Virtex-II FPGA technology resulting in a throughout rate of 182 Msample/s.

The problem of recognising targets in non-overlapping clutter using nonlinear N-ary phase filters is addressed. Using mathematical analysis, expressions were derived for an N-ary phase filter and the intensity variance of an optical correlator output. The N-ary phase filter was shown to consist of an infinite sum of harmonic terms whose periodicity was determined by N. For the intensity variance, it was found that under certain conditions the variance was minimised due to a hitherto undiscovered phase quadrature effect. Comparison showed that optimal real filters produced greater SNR values than the continuous phase versions as a consequence of this effect.

Asymptotic estimates of the norms of orbits of certain operators that commute with the classical Volterra operator V acting on L-P[0,1], with 1 0, but also to operators of the form phi (V), where phi is a holomorphic function at zero. The method to obtain the estimates is based on the fact that the Riemann-Liouville operator as well as the Volterra operator can be related to the Levin-Pfluger theory of holomorphic functions of completely regular growth. Different methods, such as the Denjoy-Carleman theorem, are needed to analyze the behavior of the orbits of I - cV, where c > 0. The results are applied to the study of cyclic properties of phi (V), where phi is a holomorphic function at 0.

A ridged-waveguide diplexer incorporating integrated compact ridged-waveguide filters and a ridged-waveguide T-junction is presented. The compact size of the filter is achieved by integrating of bandpass periodic filter, and a low-pass structure is used in order to suppress spurious responses. Simulation using the mode-matching method has been carried out for ridge-waveguide filters and T junctions and the results are presented. The measured results are in good agreement with the simulated results. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
