Cobalt-related impurity centers in diamond have been studied using first principles calculations. We computed the symmetry, formation and transition energies, and hyperfine parameters of cobalt impurities in isolated configurations and in complexes involving vacancies and nitrogen atoms. We found that the Co impurity in a divacant site is energetically favorable and segregates nitrogen atoms in its neighborhood. Our results are discussed in the context of the recently observed Co-related electrically active centers in synthetic diamond.

The Amazonian craton in the Sao Felix do Xingu city, southeast region of the Para state, north of Brazil, hosts exceptionally well-preserved Paleoproterozoic bimodal magmatic units grouped in the Sobreiro and Santa Rosa formations. These formations are correlated to the Uatuma magmatic event, which is largely distributed in the Amazonian craton occupying more than 1,500,000 km(2). Geological mapping and petrographical observations reveal distinct spectra of volcanic facies in both formations. The basal calc-alkaline Sobreiro Formation is composed mainly of andesitic and dacitic lava flows and associated volcaniclastic facies of autoclastic origin, with subordinate pyroclastic flow deposits. This formation shows inferred eruption style that is similar to those in Flood Basalt Provinces, with rare scutulum-type lava shields. The upper A-type Santa Rosa Formation was generated by multicyclic explosive and effusive episodes predominantly associated with large fissures and is materialized by voluminous ignimbrites with subordinated ash-fall tuff, crystal tuff, lapilli-tuff, co-ignimbritic breccias, rhyolitic dikes and domes, and associated granitic porphyries and equigranular granitic intrusions. Ignimbrite and rhyolite dikes reveal conspicuous vertical flow pattern pointing to a fissure-controlled eruption, similar to Sierra Madre Occidental ignimbrite province. The proposed evolutionary model for the Sao Felix do Xingu units differs from those of other occurrences related to the Uatuma magmatic event in the Amazonian craton, characterized by predominance of A-type volcanism and contemporaneous granites. BACKGROUND: A major problem in Chagas disease donor screening is the high frequency of samples with inconclusive results. The objective of this study was to describe patterns of serologic results among donors to the three Brazilian REDS-II blood centers and correlate with epidemiologic characteristics. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The centers screened donor samples with one Trypanosoma cruzi lysate enzyme immunoassay (EIA). EIA-reactive samples were tested with a second lysate EIA, a recombinant-antigen based EIA, and an immunfluorescence assay. Based on the serologic results, samples were classified as confirmed positive (CP), probable positive (PP), possible other parasitic infection (POPI), and false positive (FP). RESULTS: In 2007 to 2008, a total of 877 of 615,433 donations were discarded due to Chagas assay reactivity. The prevalences (95% confidence intervals [CIs]) among first-time donors for CP, PP, POPI, and FP patterns were 114 (99-129), 26 (19-34), 10 (5-14), and 96 (82-110) per 100,000 donations, respectively. CP and PP had similar patterns of prevalence when analyzed by age, sex, education, and location, suggesting that PP cases represent true T. cruzi infections; in contrast the demographics of donors with POPI were distinct and likely unrelated to Chagas disease. No CP cases were detected among 218,514 repeat donors followed for a total of 718,187 person-years. CONCLUSION: We have proposed a classification algorithm that may have practical importance for donor counseling and epidemiologic analyses of T. cruzi-seroreactive donors. The absence of incident T. cruzi infections is reassuring with respect to risk of window phase infections within Brazil and travel-related infections in nonendemic countries such as the United States.

Singlet oxygen ((1)O(2)) generation in the reaction centers (RCs) of Rhodobacter sphaeroides wild type was characterized by luminescent emission in the near infrared region (time resolved transients and emission spectra) and quantified to have quantum yield of 0.03 +/- 0.005. (1)O(2) emission was measured as a function of temperature, ascorbate, urea and potassium ferricyanide concentrations and as a function of incubation time in H(2)O: D(2)O mixtures. (1)O(2) was shown to be affected by the RC dynamics and to originate from the reaction of molecular oxygen with two sources of triplets: photoactive dimer formed by singlet-triplet mixing and bacteriopheophytin formed by direct photoexcitation and intersystem crossing.

The iso-alpha-acids or isohumulones are the major contributors to the bitter taste of beer, and it is well-recognized that they are degraded during beer aging. In particular, the trans-isohumulones seem to be less stable than the cis-isohumulones. The major radical identified in beer is the 1-hydroxyethyl radical; however, the reactivity between this radical and the isohumulones has not been reported until now. Therefore, we studied the reactivity of isohumulones toward the 1-hydroxyethyl radical through a competitive kinetic approach. It was observed that both cis- and trans-isohumulones and dihydroisohumulones are decomposed in the presence of 1-hydroxyethyl radicals, while the reactivities are comparable. On the other hand, the tetrahydroisohumulones did not react with 1-hydroxyethyl radicals. The apparent second-order rate constants for the reactions between the 1-hydroxyethyl radical and these compounds were determined by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry [ESI(+)-MS/MS]. It follows that degradation of beer bitter acids is highly influenced by the presence of 1-hydroxyethyl radicals. The reaction products were detected by liquid chromatography electrospray ionization-ion trap-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-IT-MS/MS), and the formation of oxidized derivatives of the isohumulones was confirmed. These data help to understand the mechanism of beer degradation upon aging.

The Survivability of Swedish Emergency Management Related Research Centers and Academic Programs: A Preliminary Sociology of Science Analysis Despite being a relatively safe nation, Sweden has four different universities supporting four emergency management research centers and an equal and growing number of academic programs. In this paper, I discuss how these centers and programs survive within the current organizational environment. The sociology of science or the sociology of scientific knowledge perspectives should provide a theoretical guide. Yet, scholars of these perspectives have produced no research on these related topics. Thus, the population ecology model and the notion of organizational niche provide my theoretical foundation. My data come from 26 interviews from those four institutions, the gathering of documents, and observations. I found that each institution has found its own niche with little or no competition – with one exception. Three of the universities do have an international focus. Yet, their foci have minimal overlap. Finally, I suggest that key aspects of Swedish culture, including safety, and a need aid to the poor, help explain the extensive funding these centers and programs receive to survive.

The p-median problem is often used to locate p service centers by minimizing their distances to a geographically distributed demand (n). The optimal locations are sensitive to geographical context such as road network and demand points especially when they are asymmetrically distributed in the plane. Most studies focus on evaluating performances of the p-median model when p and n vary. To our knowledge this is not a very well-studied problem when the road network is alternated especially when it is applied in a real world context. The aim in this study is to analyze how the optimal location solutions vary, using the p-median model, when the density in the road network is alternated. The investigation is conducted by the means of a case study in a region in Sweden with an asymmetrically distributed population (15,000 weighted demand points), Dalecarlia. To locate 5 to 50 service centers we use the national transport administrations official road network (NVDB). The road network consists of 1.5 million nodes. To find the optimal location we start with 500 candidate nodes in the network and increase the number of candidate nodes in steps up to 67,000. To find the optimal solution we use a simulated annealing algorithm with adaptive tuning of the temperature. The results show that there is a limited improvement in the optimal solutions when nodes in the road network increase and p is low. When p is high the improvements are larger. The results also show that choice of the best network depends on p. The larger p the larger density of the network is needed.

This paper examines the effects of Ikea store establishment in Kalmar and Karlstad on the trade and retail inside the two cities, and as well on the trade and retail in the close neighboring municipalities and in further peripheral municipalities in both regions. After the establishment of Ikea store, Kalmar and Karlstad have experienced significant growth in trade and retail. The question, however, is how big this growth is in both cities? And how different locations on different distances from Ikea have been affected? What impact there was on different segments of the retail? How different business branches have been affected? How large the catchment area for the emerging new large-scale retail locations is? These questions, in addition to few others, are investigated in this paper. The thesis starts with an introduction chapter containing a background of the topic, problem description, the investigated questions, the purpose, and the outline of the paper. The next chapter includes the frame of reference which consists of literature review and theoretical framework about the external shopping centers and their impact on retail and regional trade development. It includes also information gathered from previous studies technical reports and other available sources about the subject. The third chapter includes description for the methods used to collect the primary and secondary data needed for the purpose of this study. Then the empirical framework which demonstrates the results of the conducted research followed by analysis and concluded in discussion and conclusion. Mixed methods are used as research strategy in this thesis, and the method to conduct the research is based on telephone interviews for the primary (qualitative) data, and documents and desk research for the secondary (quantitative) data. The gathered data is analyzed and designed in a way that allows the usage of comparative analysis technique to present the findings and draw conclusions. The results showed that new established Ikea retail store outside the city boundaries results with many effects on the city center and on the neighboring municipalities as well. The city center seems not to be affected negatively, but on the contrary positive effects were witnessed in both regions, these positive effects are linked to the increase inflow of customers from the external retail area which is known as spillover effect. III On the other hand, the neighboring towns and municipalities are more negatively affected especially with the trade of con-convenience goods as the consumers in these towns and municipalities start to go to the area of Ikea and the large external retail center to do their purchasing, the substitution effect is then said to be occurred. Moreover, the further far municipalities do not seem to be significantly affected by the establishment of Ikea. These effects whether positive or negative could be monitored by looking to few trade parameters such as the turnover, the sales index, and the consumers’ expenditure, these parameters can be very useful to measure the developments and changes in the trade and retail in a given place.

A globalização e o surgimento dos mercados internacionais têm trazido no bojo de sua evolução o interesse pela compreensão da relação entre a nacionalidade e o comportamento do consumidor ao redor do mundo. Embora a globalização seja um tema em evidência na literatura de marketing (Hadjimarcou, 1998), poucos são os estudos que analisam o comportamento trans -cultural do consumidor em ambientes de varejo na América do Sul. Verifica-se, nesta área, um franco predomínio da produção científica norte-americana, que se restringe a investigar a dinâmica do comportamento do consumidor entre as diversas “nações” existentes nos Estados Unidos (Czinkota e Ronkainen, 2001). Diante do desafio de se compreender a dinâmica existente entre a nacionalidade e o comportamento do consumidor em ambientes de varejo no contexto internacional, elegeu-se como cenário de pesquisa três países que guardam entre si similaridades e distinções marcantes: Brasil, Uruguai e Estados Unidos. Na busca de se colaborar com a consolidação do tema no escopo da área de marketing, este estudo investigou a relação entre a nacionalidade e o comportamento do consumidor nos shopping centers regionais em contextos internacionais. Brasileiros e uruguaios encontram-se imersos num caldo étnico e econômico que se confunde com a própria formação sócio-cultural dos dois países. Os resultados alcançados neste estudo revelam que a proximidade que eiva a relação histórica comum de Brasil e Uruguai manifestam-se valores pessoais e na forma como brasileiros e uruguaios se comportam nos shopping centers. Empregando-se a técnica de modelagem de equações estruturais, revelou-se que a nacionalidade guarda uma relação causal com os valores pessoais e o comportamento do consumidor nos shopping centers regionais dos três países. O modelo estrutural final obteve bons índices de ajustamento, indicando que a nacionalidade exerceu influência indireta sobre comportamento do consumidor nos shopping centers regionais através da mediação dos valores pessoais e atitudes em relação aos atributos daqueles centros de compras. No capítulo de conclusão apresenta-se as implicações dos resultados obtidos, as limitações do estudo e novas possibilidades de pesquisa que surgiram com a realização deste estudo.

A partir da perspectiva pós-estruturalista e de uma aproximação entre dois referenciais – o campo dos Estudos Culturais e a abordagem foucaultiana – este estudo traz como principal cenário a instituição shopping center. De forma geral, discuto, nessa Dissertação, os lugares que estão sendo destinados às crianças em shopping centers, especialmente nos empreendimentos denominados Iguatemi e Praia de Belas, ambos situados na cidade de Porto Alegre, RS, Brasil. O foco mais específico deste estudo está nos espaços infantis que são estrategicamente montados, dentro de shopping centers, para “abrigar” crianças de dois a dez anos enquanto suas famílias envolvem-se em outras atividades. Interessou-me ver, em especial, como tais espaços infantis são organizados, como são codificados e de que forma a organização e a codificação desses espaços acabam por distribuir os vários elementos constituintes desses (e constituídos nesses) mesmos espaços. Em suma, interessou-me ver, nessa Dissertação, que práticas disciplinares são colocadas em funcionamento nos e pelos lugares de criança dos shopping centers.

O presente estudo tem como foco a indústria de shopping centers de Porto Alegre, sua oferta de serviços ao cliente final, de forma efetiva e potencial, e a importância atribuída pelos freqüentadores desses estabelecimentos aos vários itens dessa oferta de serviço. Como referencial teórico que balizou o trabalho, têm-se uma pesquisa bibliográfica nas áreas de varejo, serviço ao cliente, histórico e situação atual da indústria de shopping centers na capital gaúcha, no Brasil e nos EUA, bem como pesquisas anteriormente realizadas de fatores de atratividade de clientes de shopping centers. Foram entrevistados 803 clientes de estabelecimentos da Capital, divididos entre shopping center regional e shopping de descontos, com controle de sexo, faixa etária e turno/dia de abordagem, por intermédio de um instrumento de coleta de dados com questões fechadas. Para o levantamento das variáveis que constaram do questionário, foi realizada antes uma necessária etapa qualitativa à base de entrevistas em profundidade com administradores dos estabelecimentos pesquisados e 15 clientes, além de teste de compreensão e ajuste do instrumento com outros 21 clientes. Sete dimensões de serviço ao cliente final foram levantadas, e verificada a importância de cada dimensão e das variáveis de serviço que as compunham, medição do nível de influência de cada dimensão e de cada serviço em relação à avaliação por parte do cliente e, finalmente, detecção de diferenças de opinião por shopping de abordagem (regional versus desconto), sexo, faixa etária e nível de escolaridade. Ao final, são apresentadas as contribuições deste estudo para o conhecimento científico e para a prática executiva do marketing em shopping centers.
