The recent developments in nanotechnology are reviewed, with particular emphasis on its application in microsystem technology where increased reliability is achieved by integrating the sensor and the readout electronics on the same substrate. New applications may be possible using integrated micromechanical clips to connect optic fibers and components in integrated silicon systems. Some of the key developments in enabling technologies are also described, including the control of thin film deposition, nanostructuring to tailor the properties of thin film, silicon micromachining to make sensors, and microclips for the low-cost assembly of integrated optical microsystems.

This paper presents an incremental learning solution for Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and its applications to object recognition problems. We apply the sufficient spanning set approximation in three steps i.e. update for the total scatter matrix, between-class scatter matrix and the projected data matrix, which leads an online solution which closely agrees with the batch solution in accuracy while significantly reducing the computational complexity. The algorithm yields an efficient solution to incremental LDA even when the number of classes as well as the set size is large. The incremental LDA method has been also shown useful for semi-supervised online learning. Label propagation is done by integrating the incremental LDA into an EM framework. The method has been demonstrated in the task of merging large datasets which were collected during MPEG standardization for face image retrieval, face authentication using the BANCA dataset, and object categorisation using the Caltech101 dataset. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Seaweeds have been used as food, medicine, fertilizers, soil conditioner and source of salt. Realizing the potentials of seaweeds, research and development thrusts have been geared towards improving and developing its product applications. Today, various applications of seaweeds have been developed and improved. The major success in the seaweed industry is the development of phycocolloids with the following specific applications: 1) agar; 2) carrageenans; and, 3) alginates.

We built 64 sets of 3D models of DNA triplex base triplets (TBT) and minimized their energies. The TBTs were divided into 32 pairs of conjugated ones on the basis of their sequence characteristic, and the energies of each pair of them were compared and analyzed, the results showed: (i) The duplex DNA of which any strand contains at least a couple of A or T, has a preference for selecting the oligodeoxyribonucleic acid (ODN) strand containing abundant T to form TBT. (ii) The duplex DNA of which any strand contains at least a couple of G or C has a preference for selecting ODN containing abundant G to form symmetric antiparallel TBT, but selecting ODN containing abundant C to form asymmetric parallel TBT. (iii) The duplex DNA of which any strand contains only one of A, T, G or C has a preference for selecting ODN containing abundant pyrimidines (T or C) to form antiparallel TBT. Additionally, two examples of TBTs applications, in designing ODN to form triplex with duplex were presented. The energy calculation result revealed that 15-TCG is the best ligand of the HIV PPT duplex. The comparative analysis of energies of the conjugated TBTs provides directive significance for designing ODN strand that is easy to form triplex in theory. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
