TiO2 nanoparticle film catalysts with different thicknesses were prepared by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition(PECVD) method and the surfaces were subsequently treated by TiCl4 or O-2 plasma. Two kinds of TiO2 films with different surface properties were obtained. Their surface microstructures and energy levels of surface states were tested by AFM, XRD, SPS, The photocatalytic activities of the catalysts were determined via photodegradation experiments of phenol. The results demonstrated that photocatalytic activities of samples whose surface was treated by O-2 plasma were greater than those treated by TiCl4 plasma. Moreover, photodegradation ratio of phenol during the first hour catalyzed by 0. 17 mu m thickness TiO2 nanoparticle film was greater than other samples. Especially, the difference of photocatalytic activities of TiO2 nanoparticle films treated by TiCl4 or O-2 plasma was respectively explained by energy band theory.

In this paper, we report the optical properties of SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles in hydrosols and those of SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles in organosols in which the surfaces of the particles are coated by a layer of organic surfactant molecules. The photoluminescence spectra of SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles in the hydrosols and organosols in different conditions were measured and discussed. We conclude that the surface structure of the SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles affects their optical properties strongly. The oxygen deficiencies on the surface of SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles play an important role in the optical properties. The surface modification of the particles effectively removes the surface defects of the particles and enhances the intensity of luminescence.

Two types of macromolecular free radicals -CH2CONHCHCH2- (a) and -CH2C=O (b) trapped in irradiated Polyamide-1010 (PA1010) and PA1010 filled with neodymium oxide (Nd2O3) were characterized by an ESR approach. It was found out that a was mainly trapped in the fold surface of the lamellae and b in the amorphous phase. This result suggested that trapped radicals mainly existed in the noncrystalline phases. The effect of the fold surface area of the lamellae on the behavior of the trapped radicals are discussed in this article. Whether for the specimens with similar crystallinities but different crystallite sizes or for those with the same concentration of neodymium oxide but different crystallinities, radical a exists dominantly in a specimen with a larger fold surface area of the lamellae. Under a certain circumstance, radical a can transform into radical b for a specimen with a larger fold surface area of the lamellae. It means that the fold surface area of the lamellae plays an important role in the transformation of radical a to b. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Direct air-sea flux measurements were made on RN Kexue #1 at 40 degrees S, 156 degrees E during the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere (TOGA) Coupled Ocean-Atmospheric Response Experiment (COARE) Intensive Observation Period (IOP). An array of six accelerometers was used to measure the motion of the anchored ship, and a sonic anemometer and Lyman-alpha hygrometer were used to measure the turbulent wind vector and specific humidity. The contamination of the turbulent wind components by ship motion was largely removed by an improvement of a procedure due to Shao based on the acceleration signals. The scheme of the wind correction for ship motion is briefly outlined. Results are presented from data for the best wind direction relative to the ship to minimize flow distortion effects. Both the time series and the power spectra of the sonic-measured wind components show swell-induced ship motion contamination, which is largely removed by the accelerometer correction scheme, There was less contamination in the longitudinal wind component than in the vertical and transverse components. The spectral characteristics of the surface-layer turbulence properties are compared with those from previous land and ocean results, Momentum and latent heat fluxes were calculated by eddy correlation and compared to those estimated by the inertial dissipation method and the TOGA COARE bulk formula. The estimations of wind stress determined by eddy correlation are smaller than those from the TOGA COARE bulk formula, especially for higher wind speeds, while those from the bulk formula and inertial dissipation technique are generally in agreement. The estimations of latent heal flux from the three different methods are in reasonable agreement. The effect of the correction for ship motion on latent heat fluxes is not as large as on momentum fluxes.

The variation of surface compositions on amorphous Ni80.4W1.5P18.1 alloy by O-2 oxidation and H-2 reduction treatments have been studied by XPS, UPS and ISS. It shows that addition of tungsten in the amorphous Ni-P alloy leads to dramatic changes of the relating component distributions in the surface layers before and after these treatments. Oxidation of a Ni80.4W1.5P18.1 amorphous alloy in 1 bar of oxygen at 513 K caused a significant segregation of nickel in different oxide states at the surface. The subsequent reduction of the oxidized surface with I bar hydrogen at 553 K resulted in only a small portion of Ni and P being reduced into elemental states, while most of them was found to combine to form a kind of nickel phosphate compound. On the other hand, under the same conditions, the oxidation and reduction of a Ni80P20 alloy gave rise to metallic Ni and elemental P as the predominate species on the alloy surface. The addition of W in the amorphous alloy might act as nuclei for a favorable formation of the phosphate structure which was proposed to be an active species for hydrogen-relating catalytic reactions. Using quantum chemical calculations, we investigate surface reactions of copper precursors and diethylzinc as the reducing agent for effective Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) of Cu. The adsorption of various commonly used Cu(II) precursors is explored. The precursors vary in the electronegativity and conjugation of the ligands and flexibility of the whole molecule. Our study shows that the overall stereochemistry of the precursor governs the adsorption onto its surface. Formation of different Cu(II)/Cu(I)/Cu(0) intermediate complexes from the respective Cu(II) compounds on the surface is also explored. The surface model is a (111) facet of a Cu55 cluster. Cu(I) compounds are found to cover the surface after the precursor pulse, irrespective of the precursor chosen. We provide new information about the surface chemistry of Cu(II) versus Cu(I) compounds. A pair of CuEt intermediates or the dimer Cu2Et2 reacts in order to deposit a new Cu atom and release gaseous butane. In this reaction, two electrons from the Et anions are donated to copper for reduction to metallic form. This indicates that a ligand exchange between the Cu and Zn is important for the success of this transmetalation reaction. The effect of the ligands in the precursor on the electron density before and after adsorption onto the surface has also been computed through population analysis. In the Cu(I) intermediate, charge is delocalized between the Cu precursor and the bare copper surface, indicating metallic bonding as the precursor densifies to the surface.

INTRODUCTION: We previously reported models that characterized the synergistic interaction between remifentanil and sevoflurane in blunting responses to verbal and painful stimuli. This preliminary study evaluated the ability of these models to predict a return of responsiveness during emergence from anesthesia and a response to tibial pressure when patients required analgesics in the recovery room. We hypothesized that model predictions would be consistent with observed responses. We also hypothesized that under non-steady-state conditions, accounting for the lag time between sevoflurane effect-site concentration (Ce) and end-tidal (ET) concentration would improve predictions. METHODS: Twenty patients received a sevoflurane, remifentanil, and fentanyl anesthetic. Two model predictions of responsiveness were recorded at emergence: an ET-based and a Ce-based prediction. Similarly, 2 predictions of a response to noxious stimuli were recorded when patients first required analgesics in the recovery room. Model predictions were compared with observations with graphical and temporal analyses. RESULTS: While patients were anesthetized, model predictions indicated a high likelihood that patients would be unresponsive (> or = 99%). However, after termination of the anesthetic, models exhibited a wide range of predictions at emergence (1%-97%). Although wide, the Ce-based predictions of responsiveness were better distributed over a percentage ranking of observations than the ET-based predictions. For the ET-based model, 45% of the patients awoke within 2 min of the 50% model predicted probability of unresponsiveness and 65% awoke within 4 min. For the Ce-based model, 45% of the patients awoke within 1 min of the 50% model predicted probability of unresponsiveness and 85% awoke within 3.2 min. Predictions of a response to a painful stimulus in the recovery room were similar for the Ce- and ET-based models. DISCUSSION: Results confirmed, in part, our study hypothesis; accounting for the lag time between Ce and ET sevoflurane concentrations improved model predictions of responsiveness but had no effect on predicting a response to a noxious stimulus in the recovery room. These models may be useful in predicting events of clinical interest but large-scale evaluations with numerous patients are needed to better characterize model performance.

Although the release of nitric oxide (NO) from biomaterials has been shown to reduce the foreign body response (FBR), the optimal NO release kinetics and doses remain unknown. Herein, polyurethane-coated wire substrates with varying NO release properties were implanted into porcine subcutaneous tissue for 3, 7, 21 and 42 d. Histological analysis revealed that materials with short NO release durations (i.e., 24 h) were insufficient to reduce the collagen capsule thickness at 3 and 6 weeks, whereas implants with longer release durations (i.e., 3 and 14 d) and greater NO payloads significantly reduced the collagen encapsulation at both 3 and 6 weeks. The acute inflammatory response was mitigated most notably by systems with the longest duration and greatest dose of NO release, supporting the notion that these properties are most critical in circumventing the FBR for subcutaneous biomedical applications (e.g., glucose sensors).
