Estrogenic endocrine disruptors present in sports supplements. A risk assessment for human health

Sports supplements are becoming a regular dietary addition for consumers who view such products as a means of improving their health and performance. Previously estrogenic endocrine disruptors (EDs) were detected in 80% of 116 sports supplements investigated by biological in vitro reporter gene assays (RGAs). The aim of this study was to quantify the hormonal activity in 50 of these sports supplement samples using a validated estrogen RGA and perform an exposure and risk assessment for human health. Results showed that 17β-estradiol equivalent levels were higher than those reported as being present in the typical human omnivore diet in 33 of the sports supplements and higher than the acceptable daily intake (ADI) in 13 of these products. The highest activity samples presented a potential to influence the human daily exposure to 17β-estradiol like activity in various risk groups with a predicted hormonal impact of greatest concern in young boys and postmenopausal women. In conclusion, consumers of sports supplements may be exposed to high levels of estrogenic EDs.

NanoStreams: Advancing the Hardware and Software Stack for Real-Time Analytics on Fast Data Streams

NanoStreams is a consortium project funded by the European Commission under its FP7 programme and is a major effort to address the challenges of processing vast amounts of data in real-time, with a markedly lower carbon footprint than the state of the art. The project addresses both the energy challenge and the high-performance required by emerging applications in real-time streaming data analytics. NanoStreams achieves this goal by designing and building disruptive micro-server solutions incorporating real-silicon prototype micro-servers based on System-on-Chip and reconfigurable hardware technologies.

On the Viability of Microservers for Financial Analytics

Energy consumption and total cost of ownership are daunting challenges for Datacenters, because they scale disproportionately with performance. Datacenters running financial analytics may incur extremely high operational costs in order to meet performance and latency requirements of their hosted applications. Recently, ARM-based microservers have emerged as a viable alternative to high-end servers, promising scalable performance via scale-out approaches and low energy consumption. In this paper, we investigate the viability of ARM-based microservers for option pricing, using the Monte Carlo and Binomial Tree kernels. We compare an ARM-based microserver against a state-of-the-art x86 server. We define application-related but platform-independent energy and performance metrics to compare those platforms fairly in the context of datacenters for financial analytics and give insight on the particular requirements of option pricing. Our experiments show that through scaling out energyefficient compute nodes within a 2U rack-mounted unit, an ARM-based microserver consumes as little as about 60% of the energy per option pricing compared to an x86 server, despite having significantly slower cores. We also find that the ARM microserver scales enough to meet a high fraction of market throughput demand, while consuming up to 30% less energy than an Intel server

Village Greens, Commons Land and the Emergence of Sports Law in the UK

This article traces the legal development of recreational rights surrounding village greens and, later, urban public spaces in the UK. The article highlights that at a critical juncture in the development of modern sport in Britain - in the mid-nineteenth century - the law helped embed not only just a space for sport in the emerging industrialised and increasingly urbanised environment, but also the place of sport in the Victorian era's evolving socio-economic landscape and, further, the relevant case law was the precursor for what is known today as sports law.

Iso-Quality of Service: Fairly Ranking Servers for Real-Time Data Analytics

We present a mathematically rigorous Quality-of-Service (QoS) metric which relates the achievable quality of service metric (QoS) for a real-time analytics service to the server energy cost of offering the service. Using a new iso-QoS evaluation methodology, we scale server resources to meet QoS targets and directly rank the servers in terms of their energy-efficiency and by extension cost of ownership. Our metric and method are platform-independent and enable fair comparison of datacenter compute servers with significant architectural diversity, including micro-servers. We deploy our metric and methodology to compare three servers running financial option pricing workloads on real-life market data. We find that server ranking is sensitive to data inputs and desired QoS level and that although scale-out micro-servers can be up to two times more energy-efficient than conventional heavyweight servers for the same target QoS, they are still six times less energy efficient than high-performance computational accelerators.

Sports Law

The term sports law is fourfold in nature and encompasses: (a) traditional areas of law, such as contract, tort, criminal, administrative and EU law, as applied to disputes of a sporting origin; (b) the particular impact that a range of statutory provisions might have on sport; for example, legislation governing discriminatory and unsafe practices in a workplace or monopolistic or fraudulent behaviour in an industry; (c) issues of public and social policy otherwise influencing the legislature and the courts, from the allocation of resources to the allocation of risk; and (d) lex sportiva, where that term is taken to reflect the various internal administrative regulations and awards by dispute-resolving mechanisms in sport. As a matter of practice, sports law tends to be concerned with the application of contract and commercial law principles to professional sport - and namely the application of such branches of law to disputes relating to the following "three pillars" of modern, professional sport i.e., disputes relating to the payment, sponsorship or endorsement of those who play sport for a living; disputes arising from decisions made by sports governing bodies; and disputes arising from the application of law to the holding of sports events.

The use of YouTube Analytics of Video Lecture Capture as a Teaching and Learning Performance Enhancer

Do patterns in the YouTube viewing analytics of Lecture Capture videos point to areas of potential teaching and learning performance enhancement? The goal of this action based research project was to capture and quantitatively analyse the viewing behaviours and patterns of a series of video lecture captures across several computing modules in Queen’s University, Belfast, Northern Ireland. The research sought to establish if a quantitative analysis of viewing behaviours coupled with a qualitative evaluation of the material provided from the students could be correlated to provide generalised patterns that could then be used to understand the learning experience of students during face to face lectures and, thereby, present opportunities to reflectively enhance lecturer performance and the students’ overall learning experience and, ultimately, their level of academic attainment.
