Reaction of C-60 with excessive potassium in toluene at refluxing temperature results in black precipitate KaC60 with high conversion, which can completely be hydrolyzed to prepare the fullerol. Investigations including FT-IR. H-1 NMR C-13 NMR, UV-Vis and FABMS of the product were reported.

Rare-earth metals were hydrogenated in the presence of TiCl4 catalyst in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at 45 degreesC under normal pressure. Transmission electron micrographs showed that the re. sulting lanthanide hydrides were in the form of nanoparticles. The rate of hydrogenation decreased with increasing atomic number of the rare-earth elements.

Titania sols were prepared by acid hydrolysis of a TiCl4 precursor instead of titanium alkoxides. The effect of acid concentration on the particle size and stability of sol was investigated. Stable titania sols with mean particle size of 14 nm could be obtained when the H+/Ti molar ratio was 0.5. The titania sols were modified with Pt, SiO2, ZrO2, WO3 and MoO3 to prepare a series of modified catalysts, which were used for the photocatalytic oxidation of formaldehyde at 37 degreesC. They showed different photocatalytic activities due to the influence of the additives. Comparing with pure TiO2, the addition of silica or zirconia increased the photocatalytic activity, while the addition of Pt and MoO3 decreased the activity, and the addition Of WO3 had little effect on the activity. It is of great significance that the conversion of formaldehyde was increased up to 94% over the SiO2-TiO2 catalyst. The increased activity was partly due to higher surface area and porosity or smaller crystallite size. A comparison of our catalyst compositions with the literature in this field suggested that the difference in activity due to the addition of a second metal oxide maybe caused by the surface chemistry of the catalysts, particularly the acidity. Background: In order to isolate the â??bestâ?? sperm for assisted conception a discontinuous two-step density gradient centrifugation is usually employed. This technique is known to isolate a subpopulation with good motility, morphology and nuclear DNA (nDNA) integrity. As yet its ability to isolate sperm with unfragmented mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is unknown. Methods: Semen was obtained from men (n=28) attending our Regional Fertility Centre for infertility investigations. We employed a modified long polymerase chain reaction to study mtDNA and a modified alkaline Comet assay to determine nDNA fragmentation. Results: The high- density fraction displayed significantly more wild type mtDNA (75% of samples) than that of the low- density fraction (25% of samples). In the high-density fraction, there was a higher incidence of single, rather than double or multiple deletions and the deletions were predominantly small scale (0.1-4.0kb). There was a strong correlation between nDNA fragmentation, the number of mtDNA deletions (r=0.7, p

A number of routes to hydroxyiminodehydroquinate, one of the most potent inhibitors of type II dehydroquinase that is currently known, have been investigated. Methods based on the existing literature synthesis, i.e. oxime formation of a suitably C-4 and C-5 protected methyl 3-dehydroquinate derivative were initially studied. Benzoyl protection did give the desired product but in low overall yield. An alternative BBA protection strategy starting with a protected dehydroquinate was successful in generating a C4/C5 analogue of the desired oxime in high yield. Further investigation revealed that it was unecessary to protect the dehydroquinate precursor, hence the potassium salt corresponding to the desired oxime was simply synthesised as a single isomer from methyl dehydroquinate.

Substituted phenols undergo a facile Rh carbenoid-mediated O-H insertion reaction with (EtO)2P(O)C(:N2)CO2R (I; R = Et, Me) to give 44-86% 2-aryloxyphosphonoacetates II (R1 = e.g., H, 4-Me, 4-Cl, 2-OH, 4-PhCH2O). Phenols contg. strongly electron withdrawing groups, bulky ortho-substituents or certain ortho-heteroatom substituents show reduced or variable yields. Catechol affords a mono-adduct which cyclizes to lactate III. Aniline inserts preferentially and exclusively over phenol in a competition reaction with I (R = Et) to give (EtO)2P(O)CH(NHPh)CO2Et. II are versatile intermediates in a prepn. of 2-aryloxy-3-phenylpropenoates IV by Wadsworth-Emmons reaction with benzaldehydes R2C6H4CHO (R2 = PhCH2O, 2-Cl, H). Dissolving Mg metal redn. provides a mild method for the conversion of propenoates IV into the corresponding propanoates.

A method for the hydrothermal synthesis of a single layer of zeolite Beta crystals on a molybdenum substrate for microreactor applications has been developed. Before the hydrothermal synthesis, the surface of the substrate was modified by an etching procedure that increases the roughness at the nanoscale level without completely eliminating the surface lay structure. Then, thin films of Al2O3 (170 nm) and TiO2 (50 nm) were successively deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on the substrate. The internal Al2O3 film protects the Mo substrate from oxidation up to 550 degrees C in an oxidative environment. The high wettability of the external TiO2 film after UV irradiation increases zeolite nucleation on its surface. The role of the metal precursor (TiCl4 vs TiI4), deposition temperature (300 vs 500 degrees C), and film thickness (50 vs 100 nm) was investigated to obtain titania films with the slowest decay in the superhydrophilic behavior after UV irradiation. Zeolite Beta coatings with a Si/Al ratio of 23 were grown at 140 degrees C for 48 It. After ion exchange with a 10(-4) M cobalt acetate solution, the activity of the coatings was determined in the ammoxidation of ethylene to acetonitrile in a microstructured reactor. A maximum reaction rate of 220 mu mol C2H3N g(-1) s(-1) was obtained at 500 degrees C, with 42% carbon selectivity to acetonitrile. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
