Terrestrial remote sensing imagery involves the acquisition of information from the Earth's surface without physical contact with the area under study. Among the remote sensing modalities, hyperspectral imaging has recently emerged as a powerful passive technology. This technology has been widely used in the fields of urban and regional planning, water resource management, environmental monitoring, food safety, counterfeit drugs detection, oil spill and other types of chemical contamination detection, biological hazards prevention, and target detection for military and security purposes [2-9]. Hyperspectral sensors sample the reflected solar radiation from the Earth surface in the portion of the spectrum extending from the visible region through the near-infrared and mid-infrared (wavelengths between 0.3 and 2.5 µm) in hundreds of narrow (of the order of 10 nm) contiguous bands [10]. This high spectral resolution can be used for object detection and for discriminating between different objects based on their spectral xharacteristics [6]. However, this huge spectral resolution yields large amounts of data to be processed. For example, the Airbone Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) [11] collects a 512 (along track) X 614 (across track) X 224 (bands) X 12 (bits) data cube in 5 s, corresponding to about 140 MBs. Similar data collection ratios are achieved by other spectrometers [12]. Such huge data volumes put stringent requirements on communications, storage, and processing. The problem of signal sbspace identification of hyperspectral data represents a crucial first step in many hypersctral processing algorithms such as target detection, change detection, classification, and unmixing. The identification of this subspace enables a correct dimensionality reduction (DR) yelding gains in data storage and retrieval and in computational time and complexity. Additionally, DR may also improve algorithms performance since it reduce data dimensionality without losses in the useful signal components. The computation of statistical estimates is a relevant example of the advantages of DR, since the number of samples required to obtain accurate estimates increases drastically with the dimmensionality of the data (Hughes phnomenon) [13].

The Everglades R-EMAP project for year 2005 produced large quantities of data collected at 232 sampling sites. Data collection and analysis is an on-going long-term activity conducted by scientists of different disciplines at irregular intervals of several years. The data sets collected for 2005 include bio-geo-chemical (including mercury and hydro period), fish, invertebrate, periphyton, and plant data. Each sampling site is associated with a location, a description of the site to provide a general overview and photographs to provide a pictorial impression. The Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing Center(GISRSC) at Florida International University (FIU) has designed and implemented an enterprise database for long-term storage of the projects data in a central repository, providing the framework of data storage for the continuity of future sampling campaigns and allowing integration of new sample data as it becomes available. In addition GISRSC provides this interactive web application for easy, quick and effective retrieval and visualization of that data.

Multiferroic materials displaying coupled ferroelectric and ferromagnetic order parameters could provide a means for data storage whereby bits could be written electrically and read magnetically, or vice versa. Thin films of Aurivillius phase Bi6Ti2.8Fe1.52Mn0.68O18, previously prepared by a chemical solution deposition (CSD) technique, are multiferroics demonstrating magnetoelectric coupling at room temperature. Here, we demonstrate the growth of a similar composition, Bi6Ti2.99Fe1.46Mn0.55O18, via the liquid injection chemical vapor deposition technique. High-resolution magnetic measurements reveal a considerably higher in-plane ferromagnetic signature than CSD grown films (MS = 24.25 emu/g (215 emu/cm3), MR = 9.916 emu/g (81.5 emu/cm3), HC = 170 Oe). A statistical analysis of the results from a thorough microstructural examination of the samples, allows us to conclude that the ferromagnetic signature can be attributed to the Aurivillius phase, with a confidence level of 99.95%. In addition, we report the direct piezoresponse force microscopy visualization of ferroelectric switching while going through a full in-plane magnetic field cycle, where increased volumes (8.6 to 14% compared with 4 to 7% for the CSD-grown films) of the film engage in magnetoelectric coupling and demonstrate both irreversible and reversible magnetoelectric domain switching.

Early definitions of Smart Building focused almost entirely on the technology aspect and did not suggest user interaction at all. Indeed, today we would attribute it more to the concept of the automated building. In this sense, control of comfort conditions inside buildings is a problem that is being well investigated, since it has a direct effect on users’ productivity and an indirect effect on energy saving. Therefore, from the users’ perspective, a typical environment can be considered comfortable, if it’s capable of providing adequate thermal comfort, visual comfort and indoor air quality conditions and acoustic comfort. In the last years, the scientific community has dealt with many challenges, especially from a technological point of view. For instance, smart sensing devices, the internet, and communication technologies have enabled a new paradigm called Edge computing that brings computation and data storage closer to the location where it is needed, to improve response times and save bandwidth. This has allowed us to improve services, sustainability and decision making. Many solutions have been implemented such as smart classrooms, controlling the thermal condition of the building, monitoring HVAC data for energy-efficient of the campus and so forth. Though these projects provide to the realization of smart campus, a framework for smart campus is yet to be determined. These new technologies have also introduced new research challenges: within this thesis work, some of the principal open challenges will be faced, proposing a new conceptual framework, technologies and tools to move forward the actual implementation of smart campuses. Keeping in mind, several problems known in the literature have been investigated: the occupancy detection, noise monitoring for acoustic comfort, context awareness inside the building, wayfinding indoor, strategic deployment for air quality and books preserving.

Cloud storage has rapidly become a cornerstone of many businesses and has moved from an early adopters stage to an early majority, where we typically see explosive deployments. As companies rush to join the cloud revolution, it has become vital to create the necessary tools that will effectively protect users' data from unauthorized access. Nevertheless, sharing data between multiple users' under the same domain in a secure and efficient way is not trivial. In this paper, we propose Sharing in the Rain – a protocol that allows cloud users' to securely share their data based on predefined policies. The proposed protocol is based on Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE) and allows users' to encrypt data based on certain policies and attributes. Moreover, we use a Key-Policy Attribute-Based technique through which access revocation is optimized. More precisely, we show how to securely and efficiently remove access to a file, for a certain user that is misbehaving or is no longer part of a user group, without having to decrypt and re-encrypt the original data with a new key or a new policy.

In-network storage of data in wireless sensor networks contributes to reduce the communications inside the network and to favor data aggregation. In this paper, we consider the use of n out of m codes and data dispersal in combination to in-network storage. In particular, we provide an abstract model of in-network storage to show how n out of m codes can be used, and we discuss how this can be achieved in five cases of study. We also define a model aimed at evaluating the probability of correct data encoding and decoding, we exploit this model and simulations to show how, in the cases of study, the parameters of the n out of m codes and the network should be configured in order to achieve correct data coding and decoding with high probability.

In this work we analyze how patchy distributions of CO2 and brine within sand reservoirs may lead to significant attenuation and velocity dispersion effects, which in turn may have a profound impact on surface seismic data. The ultimate goal of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of these processes within the framework of the seismic monitoring of CO2 sequestration, a key strategy to mitigate global warming. We first carry out a Monte Carlo analysis to study the statistical behavior of attenuation and velocity dispersion of compressional waves traveling through rocks with properties similar to those at the Utsira Sand, Sleipner field, containing quasi-fractal patchy distributions of CO2 and brine. These results show that the mean patch size and CO2 saturation play key roles in the observed wave-induced fluid flow effects. The latter can be remarkably important when CO2 concentrations are low and mean patch sizes are relatively large. To analyze these effects on the corresponding surface seismic data, we perform numerical simulations of wave propagation considering reservoir models and CO2 accumulation patterns similar to the CO2 injection site in the Sleipner field. These numerical experiments suggest that wave-induced fluid flow effects may produce changes in the reservoir's seismic response, modifying significantly the main seismic attributes usually employed in the characterization of these environments. Consequently, the determination of the nature of the fluid distributions as well as the proper modeling of the seismic data constitute important aspects that should not be ignored in the seismic monitoring of CO2 sequestration problems.
