The invasion and infectivity of Meloidogyne javanica juveniles (J2) encumbered with spore of Pasteuria Penetrans were influenced by the temperature and the time J2 were in the soil before exposure to roots. The percentage of infected females decreased as the time juveniles spent in soil increased. When spore encumbered J2 were maintained at 30 degrees C the decrease in infection was greater than that at 18 degrees C. The thermal time requirements and the base temperature for P. penetrans development were estimated. The rate of development followed an exponential curve between 21 and 36 degrees C and the base temperature for development was estimated by extrapolation to be 18.5 degrees C. The effect of integrating a nematode resistant tomato cultivar with the biocontrol agent P. penetrans also was investigated. The ability of the biocontrol agent to reduce numbers of root-knot nematodes was dependent on the densities of the nematode and P. penetrans spores in the soil.

Seed set of rice (Oryza sativa L.) is highly sensitive to short episodes of high temperature at anthesis events that are likely to be more frequent in future climates. Breeding for tolerance is therefore an essential component of adaptation to climate variability and change. Experiments were conducted in 2003 and 2004 at optimum (30 degrees C daytime) and high (35 and 38 degrees C) air temperature using parents of some prominent mapping populations (i) to determine whether there were differences in the daily flowering pattern and hence a potential heat avoidance mechanism, and (ii) to identify rice genotypes having true heat tolerance during anthesis, that is, high seed set in spikelets exposed to high temperature. Rice cultivar CG14 (O. glaberrima) reached peak anthesis earlier in the morning (1.5 h after dawn) under both control (30 degrees C) and high (38 degrees C) temperature conditions than O. sativa genotypes (>= 3 h after dawn). Exposure to high temperature (centered on the time of peak anthesis) for 6 h reduced spikelet fertility more than exposure for 2 h, and fertility was lower at 38 degrees C than at 35 degrees C. Genotypic ranking for spikelet fertility at 35 and 38 degrees C was highly correlated in both 2003 and 2004. Fertility was also highly correlated across years, suggesting a consistent and reproducible response of spikelet fertility to temperature. The check cultivar N22 was the most heat tolerant genotype (64-86% fertility at 38 degrees C) and cultivars Azucena and Moroberekan the most susceptible (<8%).

The Entomopathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas putida from Steinernema abbasi and its metabolic secretions were lethal to the Galleria mellonella larvae. Different laboratory experiments on time interval, substrate, moisture, temperature, dose, penetration of cells, stored and dried metabolites were conducted in sand and filter paper bioassays. It was concluded that death was probably due to the toxic metabolites. This bacterium and its metabolites were found very effective at 30 degree C. Penetration of bacterium was rapid after application on G. mellonella larvae. P. putida cells were recovered from the haemocoele when suspensions containing bacterial cells were applied to the G. mellonella indicating that bacterial symbionts do have a free-living existence and can enter the haemocoele in the absence of nematode vector. Stored metabolite and dried metabolites were found persistent for long time. This bacterium or its toxic secretions can be used for insect control that can be important component of integrated pest management against different insect pests. P. putida and its secretions are suggested as the most appropriate suspension to apply against insect pest control program in tropical ecological regions.

Entomopathogenic nematodes, Steinernema carpocapsae, S. feltiae (Steinernematids) Heterorhabditis indica and H. bacteriophora (Heterorhabditids) were studied to control nymphs of desert locust Schistocerca gregaria. Results of all experiments showed a significant difference in mortality percentage among all isolates. All nematodes were found more effective when exposure time was increased up to 10 days. On the other hand, both Heterorhabditids caused maximum mortality as compared to Steinernematids at 30 degree C. When different moisture levels were tested in the sand arena, a medium level of moisture (1%) caused maximum insect mortality in all isolates. However, highest concentration of each isolate (200 IJs per ml) proved to be most appropriate for maximum insect death. Similarly, both Heterorhabditis nematodes when orally applied to insects killed maximum nymphs as compared to other two Steinernematids. A similar response was observed in infectivity test when maximum percentage of IJs of both isolates of Heterorhabditis successfully penetrated into the body of locust nymphs. This research suggests some useful basic findings in developing biocides with suitable virulent of entomopathogenic nematode for controlling nymphs of desert locust.

Small-angle X-ray scattering was used to characterise aqueous micellar gels of triblock copolymers E137S18E137, E82S9E82, E76S5E76, E62P39E62, and of two mixtures: E137S18E137 and E62P39E62 (Mix 1) and ES2S9E82 and E62P39E62 (Mix 2), each 50/50 wt%. E = oxyethylene, CH2CH2O; S = oxyphenylethylene, OCH2CH(C6H5); and P = oxypropylene, OCH2CH(CH3)- Within the concentration and temperature ranges investigated (30-40 wt% copolymer, 20-80 degrees C), spherical micelles of copolymers E137S18E137, E82S9ES2 and E62P39E62 packed into bodycentred cubic (BCC) structures. Gels of E76S5E76 were stable only at high concentrations and low temperatures, and a 70 wt/o copolymer solution at T = 30 degrees C formed a hexagonal gel consistent with cylindrical micelles. It is likely that the mixed copolymers would form two distributions of micelles, and more complex structures were expected. However, gels of Mix 2 had well-ordered BCC structures, while the less ordered gels of Mix 1 were also best characterised as BCC. (c) 2006 Society of Chemical Industry.

With a solution technique, NaY zeolite incorporated, tetraethylorthosilicate-crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) membranes were prepared. The resulting membranes were tested for their ability to separate isopropyl alcohol/water mixtures by pervaporation in the temperature range of 30-50 degrees C. The effects of the zeolite content and feed composition on the pervaporation performance of the membranes were investigated. The experimental results demonstrated that both flux and selectivity increased simultaneously with increasing zeolite content in the membranes. This was explained on the basis of the enhancement of hydrophilicity, selective adsorption, and establishment of a molecular sieving action attributed to the creation of pores in the membrane matrix. The membrane containing 15 mass % zeolite exhibited the highest separation selectivity of 3991 with a flux of 5.39 X 10(-2) kg/m(2) h with 10 mass % water in the feed at 30 degrees C. The total flux and flux of water were close to each other for almost all the studied membranes, and this suggested that the membranes could be used effectively to break the azeotropic point of water/isopropyl alcohol mixtures to remove a small amount of water from isopropyl alcohol. From the temperature-dependent diffusion and permeation values, the Arrhenius activation parameters were estimated. The activation energy values obtained for water were significantly lower than those for isopropyl alcohol, and this suggested that the developed membranes had a higher separation efficiency for water/isopropyl alcohol systems. The activation energy values for total permeation and water permeation were found to be almost the same for all the membranes, and this signified that coupled transport was minimal because of the highly selective nature of the membranes. Positive heat of sorption values were observed in all the membranes, and this suggested that Henry's mode of sorption was predominant. (c) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, lnc.

Model oil-in-water emulsions containing epicatechin (EC) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) showed a synergistic increase in stability in emulsions containing added albumin. EGCG showed a stronger synergy (35%) with ovalbumin than did EC. Oxidation of the oil was monitored by determining peroxide values and hexanal contents. The effect of bovine serum albumin (BSA) on model oil-in-water emulsions containing each of the green tea catechins [epicatechin gallate (ECG), EGCG, EC and epigallocatechin (EGC)] was studied during storage at 30 degrees C. The green tea catechins showed moderate antioxidant activity in the emulsions with the order of activity being ECG approximate to EGCG > EC > EGC. Although BSA had very little antioxidant activity in the absence of phenolic antioxidants, the combination of BSA with each of the catechins showed strong antioxidant activity. BSA, in combination with EC, EGCG or EGC, showing the strongest antioxidant activity with good stability after 45 days storage. Model experiments with the catechins stored with BSA in aqueous solutions confirmed that protein-catechin adducts with antioxidant activity were formed between the catechins and protein. The antioxidant activity of the separated protein-catechin adducts increased strongly with storage time and was stronger for EGCG and ECG than for EC or EGC. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. beta-Casein and alpha-casein showed radical-scavenging activities in aqueous solution, whereas bovine serum albumin (BSA), alpha-lactalbumin and P-lactoglobulin showed much weaker antioxidant activity, when assessed by the 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) radical-scavenging assay. However, beta-casein and alpha-casein showed reduced antioxidant activity after storage at 30 degrees C. An increase in radical- scavenging activity and a fall in fluorescence of the protein component were evident after 6 h, when BSA, beta-lactoglobulin or casein were mixed with EGCG, and excess EGCG was removed, indicating the formation of a complex with this protein on mixing. Storage of all the proteins with EGCG at 30 degrees C caused an increase in the antioxidant activity of the isolated protein component after separation from excess EGCG. This showed that EGCG was reacting with the proteins and that the protein-bound catechin had antioxidant properties. The reaction of EGCG with BSA, casein and beta-lactoglobulin was confirmed by the loss of fluorescence of the protein on storage, and the increase in UV absorbance between 250 and 400 nm. The increase in antioxidant activity of BSA after storage with EGCG was confirmed by the ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP) and the oxygen radical antioxidant capacity (ORAC) assays. A relatively simple, selective, precise and accurate high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method based on a reaction of phenylisothiocyanate (PITC) with glucosamine (GL) in alkaline media was developed and validated to determine glucosamine hydrochloride permeating through human skin in vitro. It is usually problematic to develop an accurate assay for chemicals traversing skin because the excellent barrier properties of the tissue ensure that only low amounts of the material pass through the membrane and skin components may leach out of the tissue to interfere with the analysis. In addition, in the case of glucosamine hydrochloride, chemical instability adds further complexity to assay development. The assay, utilising the PITC-GL reaction was refined by optimizing the reaction temperature, reaction time and PITC concentration. The reaction produces a phenylthiocarbarnyl-glucosamine (PTC-GL) adduct which was separated on a reverse-phase (RP) column packed with 5 mu m ODS (C-18) Hypersil particles using a diode array detector (DAD) at 245 nm. The mobile phase was methanol-water-glacial acetic acid (10:89.96:0.04 v/v/v, pH 3.5) delivered to the column at 1 ml min(-1) and the column temperature was maintained at 30 degrees C Using a saturated aqueous solution of glucosamine hydrochloride, in vitro permeation studies were performed at 32 +/- 1 degrees C over 48 h using human epidermal membranes prepared by a heat separation method and mounted in Franz-type diffusion cells with a diffusional area 2.15 +/- 0.1 cm(2). The optimum derivatisation reaction conditions for reaction temperature, reaction time and PITC concentration were found to be 80 degrees C, 30 min and 1 % v/v, respectively. PTC-Gal and GL adducts eluted at 8.9 and 9.7 min, respectively. The detector response was found to be linear in the concentration range 0-1000 mu g ml(-1). The assay was robust with intra- and inter-day precisions (described as a percentage of relative standard deviation, %R.S.D.) < 12. Intra- and inter-day accuracy (as a percentage of the relative error, %RE) was <=-5.60 and <=-8.00, respectively. Using this assay, it was found that GL-HCI permeates through human skin with a flux 1.497 +/- 0.42 mu g cm(-2) h(-1), a permeability coefficient of 5.66 +/- 1.6 x 10(-6) cm h(-1) and with a lag time of 10.9 +/- 4.6 h. Archaeological research has addressed imperial frontiers for more than a century. Romanists, in particular, have engaged in exploring frontiers from economic, militaristic, political, and (more recently) social vantages. This article suggests that we also consider the dialogue between space and social perception to understand imperial borderland developments. In addition to formulating new theoretical approaches to frontiers, this contribution represents the first comprehensive overview of both the documentary sources and the archaeological material found in Egypt's Great Oasis during the Roman period (ca. 30 B.C.E. to the sixth century C.E.). A holistic analysis of these sources reveals that Egypt's Great Oasis, which consisted of two separate but linked oases, served as a conceptual, physical, and human buffer zone for the Roman empire. This buffer zone protected the "ordered" Nile Valley inhabitants from the "chaotic" desert nomads, who lived just beyond the oases. This conclusion suggests that nomads required specific imperial frontier policies and that these policies may have been ideological as well as economic and militaristic.
