This report is a review of additive and subtractive manufacturing techniques. This approach (additive manufacturing) has resided largely in the prototyping realm, where the methods of producing complex freeform solid objects directly from a computer model without part-specific tooling or knowledge. But these technologies are evolving steadily and are beginning to encompass related systems of material addition, subtraction, assembly, and insertion of components made by other processes. Furthermore, these various additive processes are starting to evolve into rapid manufacturing techniques for mass-customized products, away from narrowly defined rapid prototyping. Taking this idea far enough down the line, and several years hence, a radical restructuring of manufacturing could take place. Manufacturing itself would move from a resource base to a knowledge base and from mass production of single use products to mass customized, high value, life cycle products, majority of research and development was focused on advanced development of existing technologies by improving processing performance, materials, modelling and simulation tools, and design tools to enable the transition from prototyping to manufacturing of end use parts.

This thesis explores methods for fabrication of nanohole arrays, and their integration into a benchtop system for use as sensors or anti-counterfeit labels. Chapter 1 gives an introduction to plasmonics and more specifically nanohole arrays and how they have potential as label free sensors compared to the current biosensors on the market. Various fabrication methods are explored, including Focused Ion Beam, Electron Beam Lithography, Nanoimprint lithography, Template stripping and Phase Shift Lithography. Focused Ion Beam was chosen to fabricate the nanohole arrays due to its suitability for rapid prototyping and it’s relatively low cost. In chapter 2 the fabrication of nanohole arrays using FIB is described, and the samples characterised. The fabricated nanohole arrays are tested as bulk refractive index sensors, before a bioassay using whole molecule human IgG antibodies and antigen is developed and performed on the senor. In chapter 3 the fabricated sensors are integrated into a custom built system, capable of real time, multiplexed detection of biomolecules. Here, scFv antibodies of two biomolecules relevant to the detection of pancreatic cancer (C1q and C3) are attached to the nanohole arrays, and detection of their complementary proteins is demonstrated both in buffer (10 nM detection of C1q Ag) and human serum. Chapter 4 explores arrays of anisotropic (elliptical) nanoholes and shows how the shape anisotropy induces polarisation sensitive transmission spectra, in both simulations and fabricated arrays. The potential use of such samples as visible and NIR tag for anti-counterfeiting applications is demonstrated. Finally, chapter 5 gives a summary of the work completed and discusses potential future work in this area.

Rotational moulding is a method to produce hollow plastic articles. Heating is normally carried out by placing the mould into a hot air oven where the plastic material in the mould is heated. The most common cooling media are water and forced air. Due to the inefficient nature of conventional hot air ovens most of the energy supplied by the oven does not go to heat the plastic and as a consequence the procedure has very long cycle times. Direct oil heating is an effective alternative in order to achieve better energy efficiency and cycle times. This research work has combined this technology with new innovative design of mould, applying the advantages of electroforming and rapid prototyping. Complex cavity geometries are manufactured by electroforming from a rapid prototyping mandrel. The approach involves conformal heating and cooling channels , where the oil flows into a parallel channel to the electroformed cavity (nickel or copper). Because of this the mould enables high temperature uniformity with direct heating and cooling of the electroformed shell, Uniform heating and cooling is important not only for good quality parts but also for good uniform wall thickness distribution in the rotationally moulded part. The experimental work with the manufactured prototype mould has enabled analysis of the thermal uniformity in the cavity, under different temperatures. Copyright © 2008 by ASME.

Questo lavoro di tesi mira ad indagare, a livello preliminare, quali siano i vantaggi e gli svantaggi a livello strutturale legati alla possibilità di realizzare componenti per mezzi spaziali con tecnologie di Rapid Prototyping direttamente nello spazio: questa possibilità verrà confrontata con il caso in cui gli stessi componenti siano realizzati a terra e poi inviati nello spazio con un lanciatore. Nonostante si siano riscontrati dei limiti derivanti dalla carenza di dati tecnici sulle caratteristiche meccaniche dei materiali, è stata sviluppata una metodologia che ha fornito l’opportunità, seppur con grandi approssimazioni, di valutare il problema. Il punto di partenza dell’attività è stato quello di visionare figure ed immagini di mezzi spaziali e di scegliere alcuni componenti che possano essere oggetto di manutenzione o sostituzione in volo. Sei componenti sono stati poi modellati al CAD, ed è stata condotta un’analisi ad elementi finiti (FEM) mediante il software MSC Patran/Nastran, con lo scopo di simulare la risposta strutturale nelle diverse condizioni di carico prese in considerazione. Seppur a livello qualitativo e del tutto preliminare, sono stati svolti dei confronti in termini di massa e tensioni per valutare in quali casi sembra sia conveniente realizzare un componente a terra con tecnologie tradizionali, e in quali sembra sia vantaggioso utilizzare nuove tecnologie di prototipazione rapida stampando direttamente il componente nello spazio.

In the teaching practice of architecture and urbanism in Brazil, educational legislation views modeling laboratories and workshops as an indispensable component of the infrastructure required for the good functioning of any architectural course of study. Although the development of information technology at the international level has created new possibilities for digital production of architectural models, research in this field being underway since the early 1990s, it is only from 2007 onwards that such technologies started to be incorporated into the teaching activity of architecture and urbanism in Brazil, through the pioneering experience at LAPAC/FEC/UNICAMP. It is therefore a recent experiment whose challenges can be highlighted through the following examples: (i) The implementation of digital prototyping laboratories in undergraduate courses of architecture and urbanism is still rare in Brazil; (ii) As a new developing field with few references and application to undergraduate programs, it is hard to define methodological procedures suitable for the pedagogical curricula already implemented or which have already been consolidated over the years; (iii) The new digital ways for producing tridimensional models are marked with specificities which make it difficult to fit them within the existing structures of model laboratories and workshops. Considering the above, the present thesis discusses the tridimensional model as a tool which may contribute to the development of students skills in perceiving, understanding and representing tridimensional space. Analysis is made of the relation between different forms of models and the teaching of architectural project, with emphasis on the design process. Starting from the conceptualization of the word model as it is used in architecture and urbanism, an attempt is made to identify types of tridimensional models used in the process of project conception, both through the traditional, manual way of model construction as well as through the digital ones. There is also an explanation on how new technologies for digital production of models through prototyping are being introduced in undergraduate academic programs of architecture and urbanism in Brazil, as well as a review of recent academic publications in this area. Based on the paradigm of reflective practice in teaching as designed by Schön (2000), the experiment applied in the research was undertaken in the integrated workshop courses of architectural project in the undergraduate program of architecture and urbanism at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte. Along the experiment, physical modeling, geometric modeling and digital prototyping are used in distinct moments of the design process with the purpose of observing the suitability of each model to the project s phases. The procedures used in the experiments are very close to the Action Research methodology in which the main purpose is the production of theoretical knowledge by improving the practice. The process was repeated during three consecutive semesters and reflection on the results which were achieved in each cycle helped enhancing the next one. As a result, a methodological procedure is proposed which consists of the definition of the Tridimensional Model as the integrating element for the contents studied in a specific academic period or semester. The teaching of Architectural Project as it is developed along the fifth academic period of the Architecture and Urbanism undergraduate program of UFRN is taken as a reference

Physical places are given contextual meaning by the objects and people that make up the space. Presence in physical places can be utilised to support mobile interaction by making access to media and notifications on a smartphone easier and more visible to other people. Smartphone interfaces can be extended into the physical world in a meaningful way by anchoring digital content to artefacts, and interactions situated around physical artefacts can provide contextual meaning to private manipulations with a mobile device. Additionally, places themselves are designed to support a set of tasks, and the logical structure of places can be used to organise content on the smartphone. Menus that adapt the functionality of a smartphone can support the user by presenting the tools most likely to be needed just-in-time, so that information needs can be satisfied quickly and with little cognitive effort. Furthermore, places are often shared with people whom the user knows, and the smartphone can facilitate social situations by providing access to content that stimulates conversation. However, the smartphone can disrupt a collaborative environment, by alerting the user with unimportant notifications, or sucking the user in to the digital world with attractive content that is only shown on a private screen. Sharing smartphone content on a situated display creates an inclusive and unobtrusive user experience, and can increase focus on a primary task by allowing content to be read at a glance. Mobile interaction situated around artefacts of personal places is investigated as a way to support users to access content from their smartphone while managing their physical presence. A menu that adapts to personal places is evaluated to reduce the time and effort of app navigation, and coordinating smartphone content on a situated display is found to support social engagement and the negotiation of notifications. Improving the sensing of smartphone users in places is a challenge that is out-with the scope of this thesis. Instead, interaction designers and developers should be provided with low-cost positioning tools that utilise presence in places, and enable quantitative and qualitative data to be collected in user evaluations. Two lightweight positioning tools are developed with the low-cost sensors that are currently available: The Microsoft Kinect depth sensor allows movements of a smartphone user to be tracked in a limited area of a place, and Bluetooth beacons enable the larger context of a place to be detected. Positioning experiments with each sensor are performed to highlight the capabilities and limitations of current sensing techniques for designing interactions with a smartphone. Both tools enable prototypes to be built with a rapid prototyping approach, and mobile interactions can be tested with more advanced sensing techniques as they become available. Sensing technologies are becoming pervasive, and it will soon be possible to perform reliable place detection in-the-wild. Novel interactions that utilise presence in places can support smartphone users by making access to useful functionality easy and more visible to the people who matter most in everyday life.

[EN] 3D microfluidic device fabrication methods are normally quite expensive and tedious. In this paper, we present an easy and cheap alternative wherein thin cyclic olefin polymer (COP) sheets and pressure sensitive adhesive(PSA) were used to fabricate hybrid 3D microfluidic structures, by the Origami technique, which enables the fabrication of microfluidic devices without the need of any alignment tool. The COP and PSA layers were both cut simultaneously using a portable, low-cost plotter allowing for rapid prototyping of a large variety of designs in a single production step. The devices were then manually assembled using the Origami technique by simply combining COP and PSA layers and mild pressure. This fast fabrication method was applied, as proof of concept, to the generation of a micromixer with a 3D-stepped serpentine design made of ten layers in less than 8 min. Moreover, the micromixer was characterized as a function of its pressure failure, achieving pressures of up to 1000 mbar. This fabrication method is readily accessible across a large range of potential end users, such as educational agencies (schools,universities), low-income/developing world research and industry or any laboratory without access to clean room facilities, enabling the fabrication of robust, reproducible microfluidic devices.

The objective of this research is to synthesize structural composites designed with particular areas defined with custom modulus, strength and toughness values in order to improve the overall mechanical behavior of the composite. Such composites are defined and referred to as 3D-designer composites. These composites will be formed from liquid crystalline polymers and carbon nanotubes. The fabrication process is a variation of rapid prototyping process, which is a layered, additive-manufacturing approach. Composites formed using this process can be custom designed by apt modeling methods for superior performance in advanced applications. The focus of this research is on enhancement of Young's modulus in order to make the final composite stiffer. Strength and toughness of the final composite with respect to various applications is also discussed. We have taken into consideration the mechanical properties of final composite at different fiber volume content as well as at different orientations and lengths of the fibers. The orientation of the LC monomers is supposed to be carried out using electric or magnetic fields. A computer program is modeled incorporating the Mori-Tanaka modeling scheme to generate the stiffness matrix of the final composite. The final properties are then deduced from the stiffness matrix using composite micromechanics. Eshelby's tensor, required to calculate the stiffness tensor using Mori-Tanaka method, is calculated using a numerical scheme that determines the components of the Eshelby's tensor (Gavazzi and Lagoudas 1990). The numerical integration is solved using Gaussian Quadrature scheme and is worked out using MATLAB as well. . MATLAB provides a good deal of commands and algorithms that can be used efficiently to elaborate the continuum of the formula to its extents. In this report, we develop an intelligent adaptive neuro-fuzzy controller by using adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) techniques. We begin by starting with a standard proportional-derivative (PD) controller and use the PD controller data to train the ANFIS system to develop a fuzzy controller. We then propose and validate a method to implement this control strategy on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware. An analysis is made into the choice of filters for attitude estimation. These choices are limited by the complexity of the filter and the computing ability and memory constraints of the micro-controller. Simplified Kalman filters are found to be good at estimation of attitude given the above constraints. Using model based design techniques, the models are implemented on an embedded system. This enables the deployment of fuzzy controllers on enthusiast-grade controllers. We evaluate the feasibility of the proposed control strategy in a model-in-the-loop simulation. We then propose a rapid prototyping strategy, allowing us to deploy these control algorithms on a system consisting of a combination of an ARM-based microcontroller and two Arduino-based controllers. We then use a combination of the code generation capabilities within MATLAB/Simulink in combination with multiple open-source projects in order to deploy code to an ARM CortexM4 based controller board. We also evaluate this strategy on an ARM-A8 based board, and a much less powerful Arduino based flight controller. We conclude by proving the feasibility of fuzzy controllers on Commercial-off the shelf (COTS) hardware, we also point out the limitations in the current hardware and make suggestions for hardware that we think would be better suited for memory heavy controllers.

Negli ultimi anni, i limiti sempre più stringenti sulle emissioni inquinanti dei gas di scarico, hanno portato ad un notevole aumento della complessità dei motori a combustione interna. Questa complicazione determina un aumento esponenziale del numero di test da effettuare nella sala prova. I metodi tipici di gestione dei test non possono più essere utilizzati, ma è essenziale creare un sistema che ottimizzi le prove. Per ridurre drasticamente il tempo di esecuzione, è necessario implementare un'architettura in grado di facilitare lo scambio di dati tra i sistemi presenti nella sala prova, e, in aggiunta, definire le strategie di automazione dei test. L'approccio a taluni metodi si presenta ancora complicato in molti gruppi di sviluppo di strategie di controllo motore, anche se, una volta sviluppati, portano e a grandi benefici durante la fase di test. Il lavoro illustra i metodi implementati per la gestione di queste strategie. Prima si descrive l'approccio utilizzato nella calibrazione di anticipo di accensione per mantenere livelli accettabili di detonazione durante il processo di calibrazione. Successivamente è mostrato il sistema di automazione dei test che consente il pieno controllo del punto di funzionamento del motore, la gestione dell'acquisizione e la verifica della stabilità delle condizioni ottenute. L'ultima parte mostra sistemi di prototipazione rapida per la gestione di componenti innovatici del motore.

This thesis describes a study conducted for the development of a new approach for the design of compliant mechanisms. Currently compliant mechanisms are based on a 2.5D design method. The applications for which compliant mechanisms can be used this way, is limited. The proposed research suggests to use a 3D approach for the design of CM’s, to better exploit its useful properties. To test the viability of this method, a practical application was chosen. The selected application is related to morphing wings. During this project a working prototype of a variable sweep and variable AoA system was designed and made for an SUAV. A compliant hinge allows the system to achieve two DOF. This hinge has been designed using the proposed 3D design approach. To validate the capabilities of the design, two methods were used. One of these methods was by simulation. By using analysis software, a basic idea could be provided of the stress and deformation of the designed mechanism. The second validation was done by means of AM. Using FDM and material jetting technologies, several prototypes were manufactured. The result of the first model showed that the DOF could be achieved. Models manufactured using material jetting technology, proved that the designed model could provide the desired motion and exploit the positive characteristics of CM. The system could be manufactured successfully in one part. Being able to produce the system in one part makes the need for an extensive assembly process redundant. This improves its structural quality. The materials chosen for the prototypes were PLA, VeroGray and Rigur. The material properties were suboptimal for its final purpose, but successful results were obtained. The prototypes proved tough and were able to provide the desired motion. This proves that the proposed design method can be a useful tool for the design of improved CM’s. Furthermore, the variable sweep & AoA system could be used to boost the flight performance of SUAV’s.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are proving to have huge potential in road safety, comfort, and efficiency. In recent years, car manufacturers have equipped their high-end vehicles with Level 2 ADAS, which are, according to SAE International, systems that combine both longitudinal and lateral active motion control. These automated driving features, while only available in highway scenarios, appear to be very promising towards the introduction of hands-free driving. However, as they rely only on an on-board sensor suite, their continuative operation may be affected by the current environmental conditions: this prevents certain functionalities such as the automated lane change, other than requiring the driver to keep constantly the hands on the steering wheel. The enabling factor for hands-free highway driving proposed by Mobileye is the integration of high-definition maps, thus leading to the so-called Level 2+. This thesis was carried out during an internship in Maserati's Virtual Engineering team. The activity consisted of the design of an L2+ Highway Assist System following the Rapid Control Prototyping approach, starting from the definition of the requirements up to the real-time implementation and testing on a simulator of the brand new compact SUV Maserati Grecale. The objective was to enhance the current Level 2 highway driving assistance system with hands-free driving capability; for this purpose an Autonomous Lane Change functionality has been designed, proposing a Model Predictive Control-based decision-maker, in charge of assessing both the feasibility and convenience of performing a lane-change maneuver. The result is a Highway Assist System capable of driving the vehicle in a traffic scenario safely and efficiently, never requiring driver intervention.
