The relative energies of triangular face sharing condensed macro polyhedral carboranes: CB20H18 and C2B19H18+ derived from mono- and di-substitution of carbons in (4) B21H18- is calculated at B3LYP/6-31G* level. The relative energies, H center dot center dot center dot H non-bonding distances, NICS values, topological charge analysis and orbital overlap compatibility connotes the face sharing condensed macro polyhedral mono-carboranes, 8 (4-CB20H18) to be the lowest energy isomer. The di-carba- derivative, (36) 4,4'a-C2B19H18+ with carbons substituted in a different B-12 cage in (4) B21H18- in anti-fashion is the most stable isomer among 28 possibilities. This structure has less non-bonding H center dot center dot center dot H interaction and is in agreement with orbital-overlap compatibility, and these two have the pivotal role in deciding the stability of these clusters. An estimate of the inherent stability of these carboranes is made using near-isodesmic equations which show that CB20H18 (8) is in the realm of the possible. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Background: Aligning similar molecular structures is an important step in the process of bio-molecular structure and function analysis. Molecular surfaces are simple representations of molecular structure that are easily constructed from various forms of molecular data such as 3D atomic coordinates (PDB) and Electron Microscopy (EM) data. Methods: We present a Multi-Scale Morse-Smale Molecular-Surface Alignment tool, MS3ALIGN, which aligns molecular surfaces based on significant protrusions on the molecular surface. The input is a pair of molecular surfaces represented as triangle meshes. A key advantage of MS3ALIGN is computational efficiency that is achieved because it processes only a few carefully chosen protrusions on the molecular surface. Furthermore, the alignments are partial in nature and therefore allows for inexact surfaces to be aligned. Results: The method is evaluated in four settings. First, we establish performance using known alignments with varying overlap and noise values. Second, we compare the method with SurfComp, an existing surface alignment method. We show that we are able to determine alignments reported by SurfComp, as well as report relevant alignments not found by SurfComp. Third, we validate the ability of MS3ALIGN to determine alignments in the case of structurally dissimilar binding sites. Fourth, we demonstrate the ability of MS3ALIGN to align iso-surfaces derived from cryo-electron microscopy scans. Conclusions: We have presented an algorithm that aligns Molecular Surfaces based on the topology of surface curvature. Awebserver and standalone software implementation of the algorithm available at http://vgl.serc.iisc.ernet. in/ms3align.

We study a positivity condition for the curvature of oriented Riemannian 4-manifolds: the half-PIC condition. It is a slight weakening of the positive isotropic curvature (PIC) condition introduced by M. Micallef and J. Moore. We observe that the half-PIC condition is preserved by the Ricci flow and satisfies a maximality property among all Ricci flow invariant positivity conditions on the curvature of oriented 4-manifolds. We also study some geometric and topological aspects of half-PIC manifolds.

The problem of continuous curvature path planning for passages is considered. This problem arises when an autonomous vehicle traverses between prescribed boundaries such as corridors, tunnels, channels, etc. Passage boundaries with curvature and heading discontinuities pose challenges for generating smooth paths passing through them. Continuous curvature half-S shaped paths derived from the Four Parameter Logistic Curve family are proposed as a prospective path planning solution. Analytic conditions are derived for generating continuous curvature paths confined within the passage boundaries. Zero end curvature highlights the scalability of the proposed solution and its compatibility with other path planners in terms of larger path planning domains. Various scenarios with curvature and heading discontinuities are considered presenting viability of the proposed solution.

An efficient buffer layer scheme has been designed to address the issue of curvature management during metalorganic chemical vapour deposition growth of GaN on Si (111) substrate. This is necessary to prevent cracking of the grown layer during post-growth cooling down from growth temperature to room temperature and to achieve an allowable bow (<40 m) in the wafer for carrying out lithographic processes. To meet both these ends simultaneously, the stress evolution in the buffer layers was observed carefully. The reduction in precursor flow during the buffer layer growth provided better control over curvature evolution in the growing buffer layers. This has enabled the growth of a suitable high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) stack on 2'' Si (111) substrate of 300 m thickness with a bow as low as 11.4 m, having a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) of mobility, carrier concentration, and sheet resistance values 1510 cm(2)/V-s, 0.96 x 10(13)/cm(2), and 444 /, respectively. Another variation of similar technique resulted in a bow of 23.4 m with 2DEG mobility, carrier concentration, and sheet resistance values 1960 cm(2)/V-s, 0.98 x 10(13)/cm(2), and 325 /, respectively.

The alarmone (p)ppGpp regulates transcription, translation, replication, virulence, lipid synthesis, antibiotic sensitivity, biofilm formation, and other functions in bacteria. Signaling nucleotide cyclic di-GMP (c-di-GMP) regulates biofilm formation, motility, virulence, the cell cycle, and other functions. In Mycobacterium smegmatis, both (p) ppGpp and c-di-GMP are synthesized and degraded by bifunctional proteins Rel(Msm) and DcpA, encoded by rel(Msm) and dcpA genes, respectively. We have previously shown that the Delta rel(Msm) and Delta dcpA knockout strains are antibiotic resistant and defective in biofilm formation, show altered cell surface properties, and have reduced levels of glycopeptidolipids and polar lipids in their cell wall (K. R. Gupta, S. Kasetty, and D. Chatterji, Appl Environ Microbiol 81:2571-2578, 2015, http://dx.doi.org/10.1128/AEM.03999-14). In this work, we have explored the phenotypes that are affected by both (p) ppGpp and c-di-GMP in mycobacteria. We have shown that both (p) ppGpp and c-di-GMP are needed to maintain the proper growth rate under stress conditions such as carbon deprivation and cold shock. Scanning electron microscopy showed that low levels of these second messengers result in elongated cells, while high levels reduce the cell length and embed the cells in a biofilm-like matrix. Fluorescence microscopy revealed that the elongated Delta rel(Msm) and Delta dcpA cells are multinucleate, while transmission electron microscopy showed that the elongated cells are multiseptate. Gene expression analysis also showed that genes belonging to functional categories such as virulence, detoxification, lipid metabolism, and cell-wall-related processes were differentially expressed. Our results suggests that both (p) ppGpp and c-di-GMP affect some common phenotypes in M. smegmatis, thus raising a possibility of cross talk between these two second messengers in mycobacteria. IMPORTANCE Our work has expanded the horizon of (p) ppGpp and c-di-GMP signaling in Gram-positive bacteria. We have come across a novel observation that M. smegmatis needs (p) ppGpp and c-di-GMP for cold tolerance. We had previously shown that the Delta rel(Msm) and Delta dcpA strains are defective in biofilm formation. In this work, the overproduction of (p) ppGpp and c-di-GMP encased M. smegmatis in a biofilm-like matrix, which shows that both (p) ppGpp and c-di-GMP are needed for biofilm formation. The regulation of cell length and cell division by (p) ppGpp was known in mycobacteria, but our work shows that c-di-GMP also affects the cell size and cell division in mycobacteria. This is perhaps the first report of c-di-GMP regulating cell division in mycobacteria.

The effects of curvature and wrinkling on the growth of turbulent premixed flame kernels were studied using both two-dimensional OH Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) and three-dimensional Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS). Comparisons of results between the two approaches showed a high level of agreement, providing confidence in the simplified chemistry treatment employed in the DNS, and indicating that chemistry might have only a limited influence on the evolution of the freely propagating flame. The usefulness of PLIF in providing data over a wide parameter range was illustrated using statistics obtained from both CH4/air and H2/air mixtures, which show markedly different behavior due to their different thermo-diffusive properties. The results provided a demonstration of the combined power of PLIF and DNS for flame investigation. Each technique compensate for the weaknesses of the other, and to reinforce the strengths of both.

A direct comparison between time resolved PLIF measurements of OH and two dimensional slices from a full three dimensional DNS data set of turbulent premixed flame kernels in lean methane/air mixture was presented. The local flame structure and the degree of flame wrinkling were examined in response to differing turbulence intensities and turbulent Reynolds numbers. Simulations were performed using the SEGA DNS code, which is based on the solution of the compressible Navier Stokes, species, and energy equations for a lean hydrocarbon mixture. For the OH PLIF measurements, a cluster of four Nd:YAG laser was fired sequentially at high repetition rates and used to pump a dye laser. The frequency doubled laser beam was formed into a sheet of 40 mm height using a cylindrical telescope. The combination of PLIF and DNS has been demonstrated as a powerful tool for flame analysis. This research will form the basis for the development of sub-grid-scale (SGS) models for LES of lean-premixed combustion systems such as gas turbines. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 30th International Symposium on Combustion (Chicago, IL 7/25-30/2004).

Abstract: The late antique destruction of two bronze statues of Pausanias - the Spartan general responsible for the Greek victory at the Battle of Plataea (479 BC) - housed in the temple of Athena Chalkioikos in Sparta (Lib. Ep. 1518), has been interpreted as one of the few cases of a violent conflict between pagan and Christian population in Greece. Nevertheless the sources suggest that late antique Sparta was a bastion of Hellenic paganism and give a picture of a small and quiet town ruled by a pagan educated élite, where pagans like Libanius wanted to live. Since there is no evidence of a violent conflict between pagans and Christians in Sparta, and Libanius confirms that in 365 AD all the temples and cult statues were still in place, this paper addresses the issue from a different point of view and offers a new contribution to the history of Sparta in Late Antiquity. By using literary, archaeological and epigraphic evidence the paper explores: 1) the relationship between Roman administration and Spartan élite in the IVth century AD; 2) the historical memory of Pausanias in Late Antiquity. It will be emphasized that the obscure burning of the two statues helped to remove from Sparta the memory of Pausanias - a controversial figure, misrepresented in Late Antiquity and connected to the ancient staseis in Laconia - in order to promote a positive image of Sparta as a city without conflicts and ruled by the political system of Lycurgus (eunomia). As documented by local inscriptions in praise of late Roman governors, the mythical lawgiver Lycurgus was the paradigm of the imperial governors who rebuilded the town in the IVth cent. AD. It can be assumed that while Rome, Constantinople, Antioch and Athens were troubled by political and religious violence or by seditions between different factions, Sparta aimed to revive its traditional model of civic order in the new historical context of Late Antiquity.

The Pearson instability was suggested to discuss the onset of Marangoni convection in a liquid layer of large Prandtl number under an applied temperature difference perpendicular to the free surface in the microgravity environment. In this case, the temperature distribution on the curved free surface is nonuniform, and the thermocapillary convection is induced and coupled with the Marangoni convection. In the present paper the effect of volume ratio of the liquid layer on the critical Marangoni convection and the corresponding spatial variation of the convection structure in zero-gravity condition were numerically investigated by two-dimensional model.
