This work describes the construction and application of two amperometric sensors for sensitive UV-filter determination. The sensors were prepared using stainless steel electrodes in which polyaniline (PANI) was electrochemically polymerized in the presence of nickel (NiPcTS) or iron (FePcTS) tetrasulfonated phthalocyanines. The sensor surface characterizations were carried out using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The PANI/NiPcTS sensor was selective for the chemical UV-filter p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and the PANI/FePcTS sensor was selective for octyldimethyl-PABA (ODP), both in a mixture of tetrahydrofuran (THF) and 0.1 mol L(-1) H(2)SO(4) at a volume ratio of 30 : 70, and with an applied potential of 0.0 mV vs. Ag vertical bar AgCl. A detailed investigation of the selectivity was carried out for both sensors, in order to determine their responses for ten different UV filters. Finally, each sensor was successfully applied to PABA or ODP quantification in sunscreen formulations and water from swimming pools.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to use photoelastic analysis to compare the system of forces generated by retraction T-loop springs made with stainless steel and titanium-molybdenum alloy (TMA) (Ormco, Glendora, Calif) with photoelastic analysis. Methods: Three photoelastic models were used to evaluate retraction T-loop springs with the same preactivations in 2 groups. In group 1, the loop was constructed with a stainless steel wire, and 2 helicoids were incorporated on top of the T-loop; in group 2, it was made with TMA and no helicoids. Results: Upon using the qualitative analysis of the fringe order in the photoelastic model, it was observed that the magnitude of force generated by the springs in group 1 was significantly higher than that in group 2. However, both had symmetry for the active and reactive units related to the system of force. Conclusions: Both springs had the same mechanical characteristics. TMA springs showed lower force levels. Fifty-four extracted human mandibular molars were embedded and sectioned at two levels. The reassembled mesial root canals were prepared with stainless-steel hand K-files (Flexofiles) and either Nitiflex or Mity nickel-titanium hand K-files using a push-pull anticurvature filing technique. Each of the three experimental groups contained 36 mesial canals randomly distributed. Superimposed pre- and postinstrumentation cross-sectional root images were magnified using a stereomicroscope and transferred to a computer for measurement and statistical analysis. The direction and extent of canal center movement were evaluated. At the apical level, the groups produced no significant difference of direction of canal center movement. In cervical sections, all groups tended to move in a distolingual direction. The three groups, however, produced no significant difference in the cervical sections in the extent of canal center movement. In apical sections, Nitiflex produced the least canal center movement. High chromium content is responsible for the formation of a protective passive surface layer on austenitic stainless steels (ASS). Due to their larger amounts of chromium, superaustenitic stainless steels (SASS) can be chosen for applications with higher corrosion resistance requirements. However, both of them present low hardness and wear resistance that has limited their use for mechanical parts fabrication. Plasma nitriding is a very effective surface treatment for producing harder and wear resistant surface layers on these steel grades, without harming their corrosion resistance if low processing temperatures are employed. In this work UNS S31600 and UNS S31254 SASS samples were plasma nitrided in temperatures from 400 °C to 500 °C for 5 h with 80% H 2-20% N2 atmosphere at 600Pa. Nitrided layers were analyzed by optical (OM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and Vickers microhardness testing. Observations made by optical microscopy showed that N-rich layers were uniform but their thicknesses increased with higher nitriding temperatures. XRD analyses showed that lower temperature layers are mainly composed by expanded austenite, a metastable nitrogen supersaturated phase with excellent corrosion and tribological properties. Samples nitrided at 400 °C produced a 5 μm thick expanded austenite layer. The nitrided layer reached 25 lm in specimens treated at 500 °C. There are indications that other phases are formed during higher temperature nitriding but XRD analysis was not able to determine that phases are iron and/or chromium nitrides, which are responsible for increasing hardness from 850 up to 1100 HV. In fact, observations made by TEM have indicated that formation of fine nitrides, virtually not identified by XRD technique, can begin at lower temperatures and their growth is affected by both thermodynamical and kinetics reasons. Supermartensitic stainless steels (SMSSs) are a new generation of the classic 13%Cr martensitic steels, lower in carbon and with additional alloying of nickel and molybdenum offering better weldabilty and low temperature toughness. Several works have shown that plasma nitriding and nitrocarburising of stainless steels at low temperatures produces a hard surface layer which results in increased wear resistance. In this work, SMSS samples were plasma nitrided and nitrocarburised at 400, 450 and 500 °C. The plasma treated SMSS samples were characterised by means of optical microscopy, microhardness, X-ray diffraction and dry wear tests. The thickness of the layers produced increases as temperature is raised, for both plasma nitriding and nitrocarburising. X-ray diffraction demonstrates that the chromium nitride content grows with temperature for nitriding and nitrocarburising, which also showed increasing content of iron and chromium carbides with temperature. After plasma treating, it was found that the wear volume decreases for all temperatures and the wear resistance increased as the treatment temperature was raised. The main wear mechanism observed for both treated and untreated samples was grooving abrasion. © 2012 IHTSE Partnership Published by Maney on behalf of the Partnership.

The influence of ethanol, sulfuric acid and chloride on the corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel was investigated by means of polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. Over the studied range, the steel corrosion potential was independent of H2SO 4 and NaCl concentrations in aqueous solution. On the other hand, in solution containing 65 wt.% ethanol and 35 wt.% water, the corrosion potentials were higher than those obtained in aqueous solution. Besides, the steel corrosion potential was affected by the addition of H2SO4 and NaCl in solution. In solutions with and without ethanol, plus 0.35 wt.% NaCl, the presence of 1 wt.% H2SO4 inhibited the appearance of pitting corrosion. © 2013 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.

Structural component failures due to cyclic loading are associated to surface damage of materials and its interaction with environment. Fatigue failure occurs with stresses below the yield strength of each material and is a result of crack initiation and propagation. In aeronautical components is an important parameter to be considered in project, as well as the corrosion and wear resistance. Thermally sprayed HVOF coatings have been considered to replace galvanic chromium deposits with comparable performance for wear and corrosion resistance. The aim of present research is to study the influence of WC-13Co-4Cr applied by HVOF, on the axial fatigue strength of 15-5 PH stainless steel. The shot peening treatment was used to restore fatigue performance.

Corrosion research in steels is one of the areas in which Mossbauer spectroscopy has become a required analytical technique, since it is a powerful tool for both identifying and quantifying distinctive phases (which contain Fe) with accuracy. In this manuscript, this technique was used to the study of corrosion resistance of plasma nitrided AISI 316L samples in the presence of chloride anions. Plasma nitriding has been carried out using dc glow-discharge, nitriding treatments, in medium of 80 vol.% H-2 and 20 vol.% N-2, at 673 K, and at different time intervals: 2, 4, and 7 h. Treated samples were characterized by means of phase composition and morphological analysis, and electrochemical tests in NaCl aerated solution in order to investigate the influence of treatment time on the microstructure and the corrosion resistance, proved by conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy (CEMS), glancing angle X-ray diffraction (GAXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and potentiodynamic polarization. A modified layer of about 8 gin was observed for all the nitrided samples, independently of the nitriding time. A metastable phase, S phase or gamma(N), was produced. It seems to be correlated with gamma`-Fe-4 N phase. If the gamma(N) fraction decreases, the gamma` fraction increases. The gamma(N) magnetic nature was analyzed. When the nitriding time increases, the results indicate that there is a significant reduction in the relative fraction of the magnetic gamma(N) (in) phase. In contrast, the paramagnetic gamma(N) (p) phase increases. The GAXRD analysis confirms the Mossbauer results, and it also indicates CrN traces for the sample nitrided for 7 h. Corrosion results demonstrate that time in the plasma nitriding treatment plays an important role for the corrosion resistance. The sample treated for 4 h showed the best result of corrosion resistance. It seems that the epsilon/gamma` fraction ratio plays an important role in thin corrosion resistance since this sample shows the maximum value for this ratio. (c) 2008 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The distribution of delta ferrite fraction was measured with the magnetic method in specimens of different stainless steel compositions cast by the investment casting (lost wax) process. Ferrite fraction measurements published in the literature for stainless steel cast samples were added to the present work data, enabling an extensive analysis about practical methods to calculate delta ferrite fractions in stainless steel castings. Nineteen different versions of practical methods were formed using Schaeffler, DeLong, and Siewert diagrams and the nickel and chromium equivalent indexes suggested by several authors. These methods were evaluated by a detailed statistical analysis, showing that the Siewert diagram, including its equivalent indexes and iso-ferrite lines, gives the lowest relative errors between calculated and measured delta ferrite fractions. Although originally created for stainless steel welds, this diagram gives relative errors lower than those for the current ASTM standard method (800/A 800M-01), developed to predict ferrite fractions in stainless steel castings. Practical methods originated from a combination of different chromium/nickel equivalent indexes and the iso-ferrite lines from Schaeffler diagram give the lowest relative errors when compared with combinations using other iso-ferrite line diagrams. For the samples cast in the present work, an increase in cooling rate from 0.78 to 2.7 K/s caused a decrease in the delta ferrite fraction, but a statistical hypothesis test revealed that this effect is significant in only 50% of the samples that have ferrite in their microstructures.

The influence of different Cr and C contents upon the solidification interval of ASTM A352M-06 Grade CA6NM cast martensitic stainless steel has been investigated using computational thermodynamics, and checked against DTA measurements in samples taken from 13 large cast parts, in order to identify potential sources for improvement on the part castability. Calculation results suggest, indeed, that this would be the case for C: when its content increases from 0.018 to 0.044 wt.% C (within the allowed range in the alloy specification), the solidification intervals increases from 25 to 43 K, which suggests improved castability with decreasing C contents. DTA results, however, do not support this prediction, showing a fairly constant solidification interval around 23 K for all investigated samples. The results are discussed both regarding the impact in alloy processing and the fitness of the existing databases to reproduce experimental results in these limiting cases.

The most important property of austenitic stainless steels is corrosion resistance. In these steels, the transition between paramagnetic and ferromagnetic conditions occurs at low temperatures. Therefore, the use of austenitic stainless steels in conditions in which ferromagnetism absence is important can be considered. On the other hand, the formation of strain-induced martensite is detected when austenitic stainless steels are deformed as well as machined. The strain-induced martensite formed especially in the machining process is not uniform through the chip and its formation can also be related to the Md temperature. Therefore, both the temperature distribution and the gradient during the cutting and chip formation are important to identify regions in which martensite formation is propitiated. The main objective here is evaluate the strain-induced martensite formation throughout machining by observing microstructural features and comparing these to thermal results obtained through finite element method analysis. Results show that thermal analysis can give support to the martensite identified in the microstructural analysis.
