This study reports the preparation and characterization of titanium dioxide (TiO2)-based non-film catalysts, reactor design and their utilization in a hybrid dynamic degradation of acetone and toluene. The behaviours of deactivation and regeneration of catalysts are explored as well. The regression equations of conversion rate in differing operating modes are concluded.

A hydrologic model was developed to predict the long-term impacts of land use change on the hydrology of the Woady Yaloak River catchment. The model can be used by catchment managers to formulate management decisions about land use changes expected to occur across the catchment in the future.

The research aimed to investigate the effect an increase in water prices would have on construction. It was found that while there is a considerable amount of water embodied in construction the actual effect of a water tax on construction would be minimal unless implemented at the highest rate.

This research explores geopolymer technology as a means of stabilising fly ash from power stations. By controlling the synthesis process, geopolymeric materials incorporating fly ash were synthesised. Successful stabilisation of strontium and barium was achieved, though attributed to side reactions. The geopolymer did not contribute significantly to stabilisation of fly ash.

To fully consider production impacts, this thesis adopts a systems perspective and uses a biophysical model, DairyMod, to measure the interactions between system components and gauge the environmental impact of dairy farming arising from nitrogen use. Performance from the perspective of both the individual farmer and society is examined.

Small mammals displayed contrasting patterns of occurence in forest fragments. Population studies revealed that key processes responsible for survival in habitat patches include demographic flexibility and the movement of individuals between patches. Combining pattern- and process-based approaches provides a more complete understanding of fauna in modified landscapes.

The research successfully showed how biological communities change in wetlands that are affected by salinity and altered water regimes as a result of irrigation and river regulation. As an outcome of the study, recommendations have been made for the future management of wetlands in the Kerang region in northern Victoria.

This study examined the distribution of native mistletoes in agricultural landscapes. Mistletoes occur in all types of wooded habitat, and provide resources for many species. Landscape structure, particularly the overall extent of tree cover, is vital for conserving mistletoes. Their future status depends on effective management across different land tenures.

The thesis reports on the strategic environmental assessment of Yalumba's 'Commitment to sustainable winemaking' programme. The case study identified the benefits, as well as shortcomings, of the wine firm's commitment to sustainability in the context of plausible future scenarios under the influence of various drivers of change, prominent amongst which was climate change.

Rehabilitation of Alcoa's Anglesea open cut brown coal mine to a healthy lake has many environmental challenges. The study of regional acid drainage, limnology of Wenslydale Coal Mine Lake and passive bioremediation of acid mine water has shown that a healthy lake can be created.

Yabbies from contaminated sites and those fed arsenic in a lab. study accumulated significant levels of arsenic mostly as As(III) and As(V). Arsenic accumulation affects the structure of the internal organs and contractile function of their muscle. The arsenic in their tissues was found to be bioaccessible to human consumers.
