Lead zirconate powder, with Zr/Ti ratio of 50/50 was prepared by polymeric precursor method and doped with 3, 5 and 7 mol% of Sr+2 Or Ba+2, as well as by 0.2 to 5 mol% of Nb+5. The powder was calcined at 750 degrees C by 4 hours and milled during 1.5 h in isopropilic alcohol. Powders were characterized by surface area measurements (BET method), by infrared spectroscopy and by X-ray diffraction to characterize the crystal structure. Isostatically pressed samples were sintered in a dilatometer furnace by using a constant heating rate of 10 degrees C/min from ambient to 1200 degrees C. Synthetic air and air with water vapor were used as atmospheres. Both Sr+2 and Ba+2 substitute Pb+2 and favor the formation of rhombohedral phase. Otherwise, Nb+5 substitute preferentially Zr+4 favoring tetragonal phase. The concentration of dopants and the atmosphere influence the densification and the microstructure of the PZT, which alters the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of the ceramics.

Polycrystalline BaxSr1-xTiO3 (x = 0.4 and 0.8) thin films with a perovskite structure were prepared by the polymeric precursor method on a platinum-coated silicon substrate. High-quality thin films with uniform composition and thickness were successfully produced by dip-coating and spin-coating techniques. The resulting thin films prepared by dip and spin-coating showed a well-developed dense polycrystalline structure with uniform grain size distribution. The metal-BST-metal structure of the thin films displays good dielectric and ferroelectric properties. The ferroelectric nature to BaxSr1-xTiO3 (x = 0.8) thin film, indicated by butterfly-shaped C-V curves and confirmed by the hysteresis curve, showed 2P(r) = 5.0 muC/cm(2) and E-c = 20 kV/cm. The capacitance-frequency curve reveals that the dielectric constant may reach a value of up to 794 at 1 kHz. on the other hand, the BaxSr1-xTiO3 (x = 0.4) thin films had paraelectric nature and dielectric constant and the dissipation factor at a frequency of 100 kHz were 680 and 0.01, respectively, for film annealed at 700 degreesC. In addition, an examination of the film's I-V curve at room temperature revealed the presence of two conduction regions in the BaxSr1-xTiO3 (x = 0.4 and 0.8) thin films, showing ohmic-like behavior at low voltage and a Schottky-emission or Poole-Frenkel mechanism at high voltage. Ferroelectric SrBi2Ta2O9 thin films on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si were successfully synthesized by the modified polymeric precursor method. The films were deposited by spin coating and crystallized by rapid thermal annealing in a halogen lamp furnace, followed by postannealing at temperatures ranging from 700 degreesC to 800 degreesC in an oxygen atmosphere. Microstructural and phase evaluations were followed by x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. The films displayed spherical grain structures with a superficial roughness of approximately 3-6 nm. The dielectric constant values were 121 and 248 for films treated at 700 degreesC and 800 degreesC, respectively. The P-E curve showed a voltage shift toward the positive side, which was attributed to crystallization under the halogen illumination. The remanent polarization (2P(r)) and coercive field (E-c) were 7.1 muC/cm(2) and 113 kV/cm, and 18.8 muC/cm(2) and 93 kV/cm for the films treated at 700 degreesC and 800 degreesC, respectively. Li2TiSiO5 powders were synthesized by the polymeric precursor method. The calcination temperatures were progressively increased until the complete crystallization of the phase occurring at 870 degreesC. For the first time, a strong photoluminescence was measured at room temperature with a 488 nm excitation wavelength for the non-crystalline samples. This photoluminescence in disordered phases has been interpreted by means of high-level quantum mechanical calculations based on density functional theory. Two periodic models have been used to represent the crystalline and disordered powders. They allowed to calculate electronic properties consistent with experimental data and to explain the relations between photoluminescence and structural disorder. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Our efforts were directed to the preparation of bismuth titanate-Bi4Ti3O12 (BIT) by two procedures: mechanically assisted synthesis and polymeric precursor method to display a variety of their advantages. To follow the nucleation and phase formation of BIT, XRD and Rietveld refinement analysis were used and it was shown that Bi4Ti3O12 ceramic can been successfully prepared from nano-sized powders obtained by both methods. The ferroelectric properties were determined and the loops from BIT obtained by polymeric precursor method were not fully saturated with a remnant polarization of 20 mu C/cm(2) and coercitive field of 1500 kV/cm. BIT obtained from powders prepared by mechanically assisted synthesis shows a remnant polarization of 0.65 mu C/cm(2) and coercitive field of 1050 kV/cm. The grain morphology may be the factor causing the observed differences. (C) 2005 Published by Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Intense photoluminescence in highly disordered strontium titanate amorphous thin films prepared by the polymeric precursor method was observed at room temperature (300 K). The luminescence spectra of SrTiO3 amorphous thin films at room temperature revealed an intense single-emission band in the visible region. X-ray absorption near edge structure was used to probe the local atomic structure of SrTiO3 amorphous and crystalline thin films. Photoluminescence intensity in the 535 nm range was found to be correlated with the presence of non-bridging oxygen defects. A discussion is presented of the nature of this photoluminescence, which may be related to the disordered structure in SrTiO3 amorphous thin films. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

SrBi2Nb2O9 thin films were produced by the polymeric precursor method using an aqueous solution. The crystallization of the films was carried out using a domestic microwave oven by means of a SiC susceptor in order to absorb the microwave energy and rapidly transfer the heat to the film. Low microwave power and short time have been used. The films obtained are well-adhered, homogeneous and with good specularity, even when treated at 600 degreesC for 10 min. The microstructure and the structure of the films can be tuned by adjusting the crystallization conditions. Depending on the direction of the heat flux it is possible to obtain preferential oriented or polycrystalline films in the microwave oven for 10 min. The microstructure presented a polycrystalline nature with spheroid small mean grain size when the susceptor is placed above the substrate. When the susceptor is placed below the substrate, the films presented platelet grains with mean grain size around 250 nm and a 001 orientation. For comparison, films were also prepared by the conventional method at 700 degreesC for 2 h. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Photoluminescence at room temperature was observed in amorphous zirconium titanate obtained from the polymeric precursor method. This was the first time in which PL was noticed in an amorphous compound made of two network formers. The PL spectra could be deconvoluted into two bands, whose center 1 was located from 540 nm to 552 nm and center 2 from 625 nm to 641 nm. The co-existence of fivefold and sixfold oxygen coordination of titanium and/or zirconium could be the origin of the radiative recombination of electron-hole pairs in amorphous ZT, which may be responsible for the emission of the photoluminescence.

PLZT ceramics belong to one of the very important groups of functional materials that make a basis for the production of a large range of electronic devices. The microstructure and properties of ceramics depend on the powder preparation and thermal processing conditions. Various techniques have been used to obtain chemically homogeneous and fine starting powders. PLZT powders have been prepared by two different production routes: by a modified Pechini method, using a polymeric precursor method (PMM) and by a partial oxalate method. A two-step sintering process, including a hot pressing, was carried out at 1100 and 1200degreesC Distinct phases obtained during the sintering process have been investigated by SEM and EDS techniques and dielectric properties such as permittivity and dielectric loss were measured in a frequency range from 1 to 20 kHz.. A significant difference in microstructure and dielectric properties, depending on powder origin and sintering procedure, has been noticed.
Photo luminescence: A probe for short, medium and long-range self-organization order in ZrTiO4 oxide
Resumo:
Photoluminescent disordered ZrTiO4 powders were obtained by the polymeric precursor soft-chemical method. This oxide system (ordered and disordered) was characterized by photoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and UV vis absorption experiments. The UV absorption tail formation in the disordered oxides was related to the diminution of optical band gap. In the disordered phase, this oxide displayed broad band photoluminescence caused by change in coordination number of titanium and zirconium with oxygen atoms. The gap decreased from 3.09 eV in crystalline oxide to 2.16 eV in disordered oxide. The crystalline oxide presented an orthorhombic alpha-PbO2-type structure in which Zr4+ and Ti4+ were randomly distributed in octahedral coordination polyhedra with oxygen atoms. The amorphous-crystalline transition occurred at almost 700 degrees C, at which point the photoluminescence vanished. The Raman peak at close to 80-200 cm(-1) indicated the presence of locally ordered Ti-O-n and Zr-O-n polyhedra in disordered photoluminescent oxides. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The SrWO4 (SWO) powders were synthesized by the polymeric precursor method and annealed at different temperatures. The SWO structure was obtained by X-ray diffraction and the corresponding photoluminescence (PL) spectra was measured. The PL results reveal that the structural order-disorder degree in the SWO lattice influences in the PL emission intensity. Only the structurally order-disordered samples present broad and intense PL band in the visible range. To understand the origin of this phenomenon, we performed quantum-mechanical calculations with crystalline and order-disordered SWO periodic models. Their electronic structures were analyzed in terms of band structure. The appearance of localized levels in the band gap of the order-disordered structure was evidenced and is a favorable condition for the intense PL to occur.

Ferroelectric Pb1-xCaxTiO3 (x = 0.24) thin films were formed on a Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate by the polymeric precursor method using the dip-coating technique for their deposition. Characterization of the films bq X-ray diffraction showed a perovskite single phase with a tetragonal structure after annealing at 700 degreesC. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses showed that the film had a smooth and crack-free surface with low surface roughness. In addition, the PCT thin film had a granular structure with an 80 nm grain size. The thickness of the films observed by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is 550 nm and there is a good adhesion between the film and substrate. For the electrical measurements metal-ferroelectric-metal of the type capacitors were obtained, where the thin films showed good dielectric and ferroelectric properties. The dielectric constant and dissipation factor at 1 kHz and measured at room temperature were found to be 457 and 0.03. respectively. The remanent polarization and coercive field for the: deposited films were P-r = 17 muC/cm(2) and E-c = 75 kV/cm, respectively. Moreover. The 550-nm-thick film showed a current density in the order of 10(-8) A/cm(2) at the applied voltage of 2 V. The high values of the thin film's dielectric properties are attributed to its excellent microstructural quality and the chemical homogeneity obtained by the polymeric precursor method.
