In an electrochemical alloying reaction, the electroactive particles become mechanically unstable owing to large volume changes occurring as a result of high amounts of lithium intake. This is detrimental for long-term battery performance. Herein, a novel synthesis approach to minimize such mechanical instabilities in tin particles is presented. An optimal one-dimensional assembly of crystalline single-phase tin-antimony (SnSb) alloy nanoparticles inside porous carbon fibers (abbreviated SnSb-C) is synthesized for the first time by using the electrospinning technique (employing non-oxide precursors) in combination with a sintering protocol. The ability of antimony to alloy independently with lithium is beneficial as it buffers the unfavorable volume changes occurring during successive alloying/dealloying cycles in Sn. The SnSb-C assembly provides nontortuous (tortuosity coefficient, =1) fast conducting pathways for both electrons and ions. The presence of carbon in SnSb-C completely nullifies the conventional requirement of other carbon forms during cell electrode assembly. The SnSb-C exhibited remarkably high electrochemical lithium stability and high specific capacities over a wide range of currents (0.2-5Ag(-1)). In addition to lithium-ion batteries, it is envisaged that SnSb-C also has potential as a noncarbonaceous anode for other battery chemistries, such as sodium-ion batteries.

Since the discovery 1] of gamma' precipitate (L1(2) - Co-3 (Al, W)) in the Co-Al-W ternary system, there has been an increased interest in Co-based superalloys. Since these alloys have two phase microstructures (gamma + gamma') similar to Ni-based superalloys 2], they are viable candidates in high temperature applications, particularly in land-based turbines. The role of alloying on stability of the gamma' phase has been an active area of research. In this study, electronic structure calculations were done to probe the effect of alloying in Co3W with L1(2) structure. Compositions of type Co-3(W, X), (where X/Y = Mn, Fe, Ni, Pt, Cr, Al, Si, V, W, Ta, Ti, Nb, Hf, Zr and Mo) were studied. Effect of alloying on equilibrium lattice parameters and ground state energies was used to calculate Vegard's coefficients and site preference related data. The effect of alloying on the stability of the L1(2) structure vis a vis other geometrically close packed ordered structures was also studied for a range of Co3X compounds. Results suggest that the penchant of element for the W sublattice can be predicted by comparing heats of formation of Co3X in different structures.

Pure alpha-Al2O3 exhibits a very high degree of thermodynamical stability among all metal oxides and forms an inert oxide scale in a range of structural alloys at high temperatures. We report that amorphous Al2O3 thin films sputter deposited over crystalline Si instead show a surprisingly active interface. On annealing, crystallization begins with nuclei of a phase closely resembling gamma-Alumina forming almost randomly in an amorphous matrix, and with increasing frequency near the substrate/film interface. This nucleation is marked by the signature appearance of sharp (400) and (440) reflections and the formation of a diffuse diffraction halo with an outer maximal radius of approximate to 0.23 nm enveloping the direct beam. The microstructure then evolves by a cluster-coalescence growth mechanism suggestive of swift nucleation and sluggish diffusional kinetics, while locally the Al ions redistribute slowly from chemisorbed and tetrahedral sites to higher anion coordinated sites. Chemical state plots constructed from XPS data and simple calculations of the diffraction patterns from hypothetically distorted lattices suggest that the true origins of the diffuse diffraction halo are probably related to a complex change in the electronic structure spurred by the a-gamma transformation rather than pure structural disorder. Concurrent to crystallization within the film, a substantially thick interfacial reaction zone also builds up at the film/substrate interface with the excess Al acting as a cationic source. The gas-phase infrared spectra of 1,2-ED and 1,4-BD have been, recorded at three different temperatures using a multipass gas cell of 6 m optical path length. DFT calculation has also been carried out using 6-311++G** and aug-cc-pVDZ basis sets to look for the existence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding, in them from the red shift and infrared absorption intensity enhancement of the bonded O-H band compared to that of the free O-H hand. Equilibrium population analysis With 10 conformers of 1,2-ED and 1,4-BD at experimental temperatures were-carried out for the reconstruction of the Observed vibrational spectra at that temperature, using standard statistical relationships. The most abundant conformer at experimental temperatures, was identified. In 1,2-ED a red shift of 45 cm(-1) in the intramolecularly interacting O-H stretching vibrational band position and no significant intensity enhancement compared to that of-the free O-H have been observed. On the contrary, in one of the hydrogen bonded conformers of 1,4-BD, a 124 cm(-1) red shift in the O-H stretching frequency and 8.5 times-intensity enhancement for the ``bonded'' O-H compared to that of the ``free'' O-H is seen. On the basis of this comparative study, we have concluded that strong intramolecular hydrogen bonding exists in 1,4-BD. But there appears, to be weak intramolecular hydrogen bonding in 1,2-ED at temperatures of 303, 313, and 323 Km the gas phase We have found that most stable hydrogen-bonded conformers of 1,4-BD are less populated than some of the non-hydrogen-bonded conformers. Even for the 1,4-BD, the relative population of the g'GG'Gt conformer, which has a strong intramolecular, hydrogen bond, is less than what is predicted. Perhaps the intramolecular hydrogen bond plays a less Significant role in the relative stability,of the various Conformers than what has been predicted from calculations and prevails in the literature.

A Li-rich layered-spinel material with a target composition Li1.17Ni0.25Mn1.08O3 (xLiLi1/3Mn2/3]O-2.(1 - x) LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4, (x = 0.5)) was synthesized by a self-combustion reaction (SCR), characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, Raman spectroscopy and was studied as a cathode material for Li-ion batteries. The Rietveld refinement results indicated the presence of monoclinic (LiLi1/3Mn2/3]O-2) (52%), spinel (LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4) (39%) and rhombohedral LiNiO2 (9%). The electrochemical performance of this Li-rich integrated cathode material was tested at 30 degrees C and compared to that of high voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 spinel cathodes. Interestingly, the layered-spinel integrated cathode material exhibits a high specific capacity of about 200 mA h g(-1) at C/10 rate as compared to 180 mA h g(-1) for LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 in the potential range of 2.4-4.9 V vs. Li anodes in half cells. The layered-spinel integrated cathodes exhibited 92% capacity retention as compared to 82% for LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 spinel after 80 cycles at 30 degrees C. Also, the integrated cathode material can exhibit 105 mA h g(-1) at 2 C rate as compared to 78 mA h g(-1) for LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4. Thus, the presence of the monoclinic phase in the composite structure helps to stabilize the spinel structure when high specific capacity is required and the electrodes have to work within a wide potential window. Consequently, the Li1.17Ni0.25Mn1.08O3 composite material described herein can be considered as a promising cathode material for Li ion batteries.

Eutectic growth offers a variety of examples for pattern formation which are interesting both for theoreticians as well as experimentalists. One such example of patterns is ternary eutectic colonies which arise as a result of instabilities during growth of two solid phases. Here, in addition to the two major components being exchanged between the solid phases during eutectic growth, there is an impurity component which is rejected by both solid phases. During progress of solidification, there develops a boundary layer of the third impurity component ahead of the solidification front of the two solid phases. Similar to Mullins-Sekerka type instabilities, such a boundary layer tends to make the global solidification envelope unstable to morphological perturbations giving rise to two-phase cells. This phenomenon has been studied numerically in two dimensions for the conditions of directional solidification, by Plapp and Karma (Phys Rev E 66:061608, 2002) using phase-field simulations. While, in the work by Plapp and Karma (Phys Rev E 66:061608, 2002) all interfaces are isotropic, in our presentation, we extend the phase-field model by considering interfacial anisotropy in the solid-solid and solid-liquid interfaces and characterize the role of interfacial anisotropy on the stability of the growth front through phase-field simulations in two dimensions.

Melt spun ribbons of Fe95-x Zr (x) B4Cu1 with x = 7 (Z7B4) and 9 (Z9B4) alloys have been prepared, and their structure and magnetic properties have been evaluated using XRD, DSC, TEM, VSM, and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The glass forming ability (GFA) of both alloys has been calculated theoretically using thermodynamical parameters, and Z9B4 alloy is found to possess higher GFA than that of Z7B4 alloy which is validated by XRD results. On annealing, the amorphous Z7B4 ribbon crystallizes into nanocrystalline alpha-Fe, whereas amorphous Z9B4 ribbon shows two-stage crystallization process, first partially to bcc solid solution which is then transformed to nanocrystalline alpha-Fe and Fe2Zr phases exhibiting bimodal distribution. A detailed phase analysis using Mossbauer spectroscopy through hyperfine field distribution of phases has been carried out to understand the crystallization behavior of Z7B4 and Z9B4 alloy ribbons. In order to understand the phase transformation behavior of Z7B4 and Z9B4 ribbons, molar Gibbs free energies of amorphous, alpha-Fe, and Fe2Zr phases have been evaluated. It is found that in case of Z7B4, alpha-Fe is always a stable phase, whereas Fe2Zr is stable at higher temperature for Z9B4. (C) The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International 2015

Gadolinium oxide, cerium oxide, and 10 mol% gadolinia doped ceria ceramic powders have been synthesized using combustion technique. Though the cubic gadolinia phase is stable at room temperature, single phase monoclinic gadolinia was obtained as a result of combustion synthesis using fuel lean and stoichiometric precursor compositions. This powder was subjected to calcination treatment and ceria doping to study the stability of phases and the rate of phase transformation from monoclinic to cubic gadolinia. It was found that monoclinic gadolinia transforms to cubic gadolinia upon calcination at temperatures less than 1200 degrees C. It was also found that rate of phase transformation is more for powder produced using fuel lean compositions; and the rate is enhanced upon ceria doping. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper demonstrates light-load instability in a 100-kW open-loop induction motor drive on account of inverter deadtime. An improved small-signal model of an inverter-fed induction motor is proposed. This improved model is derived by linearizing the nonlinear dynamic equations of the motor, which include the inverter deadtime effect. Stability analysis is carried out on the 100-kW415-V three-phase induction motor considering no load. The analysis brings out the region of instability of this motor drive on the voltage versus frequency (V-f) plane. This region of light-load instability is found to expand with increase in inverter deadtime. Subharmonic oscillations of significant amplitude are observed in the steady-state simulated and measured current waveforms, at numerous operating points in the unstable region predicted, confirming the validity of the stability analysis. Furthermore, simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model is more accurate than an existing small-signal model in predicting the region of instability.

This paper proposes a design methodology to stabilize collective circular motion of a group of N-identical agents moving at unit speed around individual circles of different radii and different centers. The collective circular motion studied in this paper is characterized by the clockwise rotation of all agents around a common circle of desired radius as well as center, which is fixed. Our interest is to achieve those collective circular motions in which the phases of the agents are arranged either in synchronized, in balanced or in splay formation. In synchronized formation, the agents and their centroid move in a common direction while in balanced formation, the movement of the agents ensures a fixed location of the centroid. The splay state is a special case of balanced formation, in which the phases are separated by multiples of 2 pi/N. We derive the feedback controls and prove the asymptotic stability of the desired collective circular motion by using Lyapunov theory and the LaSalle's Invariance principle.

A metastable nano-scale disordered precipitate with orthorhombic symmetry has been identified using high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. The phase, termed O', is metastable, formed by a shuffle mechanism involving a {110}<1<(1)over bar>0> transverse phonon wave in samples of Ti-26Nb-2Zr (at.%) quenched from the beta phase. The addition of 2% Zr to Ti-26Nb appears to suppress significantly the stability of both the {11 (2) over bar}<111> shear and 2/3 <111> longitudinal phonon wave but promotes the {110}<1<(1)over bar>0> transverse shuffle. This results in the nano-size O' phase being homogeneously formed in the parent beta phase matrix rather than the massive alpha `' phase. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The thermal stability of Nd60Fe20Co10Al10 bulk metallic glass (BMG) has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), isochronal dilatation and compression tests. The results show that the glass transition of the BMG takes place quite gradually between about 460 and 650 K at a heating rate of 0.17 K/s. Several transformation processes are observed during continuous heating with the first crystallization process beginning at about 460 K, while massive crystallization takes place near the solidus temperature of the alloy. The positive heat of mixing between the two major constituents, Nd and Fe, and, consequently, a highly inhomogeneous composition of the attained amorphous phase are responsible for the anomalous thermal stability in this system. In the present paper, the principle of similarity for two phase flows at microgravity is studied based on the results of the linear stability analysis of the two fluid concentric annular flow configuration. A new criterion of gravity independence, namely the absolute value of the ratio between the Bond number and the capillary number of the phase flowing in the annulus is no more than one, is achieved. The influences of Casimir and van der Waals forces on the nano-electromechanical systems (NEMS) electrostatic torsional varactor are studied. A one degree of freedom, the torsional angle, is adopted, and the bifurcation behaviour of the NEMS torsional varactor is investigated. There are two bifurcation points, one of which is a Hopf bifurcation point and the other is an unstable saddle point. The phase portraits are also drawn, in which periodic orbits are around the Hopf bifurcation point, but the periodic orbit will break into a homoclinic orbit when meeting the unstable saddle point.

electrostatic torsional nano-electro-mechanical systems (NEMS) actuators is analyzed in the paper. The dependence of the critical tilting angle and voltage is investigated on the sizes of structure with the consideration of vdW effects. The pull-in phenomenon without the electrostatic torque is studied, and a critical pull-in gap is derived. A dimensionless equation of motion is presented, and the qualitative analysis of it shows that the equilibrium points of the corresponding autonomous system include center points, stable focus points, and unstable saddle points. The Hopf bifurcation points and fork bifurcation points also exist in the system. The phase portraits connecting these equilibrium points exhibit periodic orbits, heteroclinic orbits, as well as homoclinic orbits.
