An attempt has been made to use the indigeneous oils-Bombax Malabarica oil and Shark liver oil in the form of sodium soaps as collectors in the flotation of quartz using barium chloride as activator. The effect of pH, collector concentration and activator concentration on the flotation of quartz is studied in a Leaf and knoll flotation cell. The experiments show that it is possible to obtain 98.0 per cent of quartz as float using 10 mg. of Bombax. Malabarica oil and Shark liver oil soaps at pH values of more than 7.0 and when barium ion concentration is in excess of that required to form barium soaps. Bombax Malabarica oil is found to be superior to Shark liver oil as collector in the flotation of quartz.

In the present work, the thermal efficiency of a conventional domestic burner is studied both experimentally and numerically for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and piped natural gas (PNG) fuels. Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling of the steady-state flow, combustion and heat transfer to the vessel is reported for the first time in such burners. Based on the insights from the CFD model concerning the flow and heat transfer, design modifications in the form of a circular insert and a radiant sheet are proposed which are observed to increase thermal efficiency for LPG. For PNG, predictions showed that loading height was a much more important factor affecting efficiency than these design modifications and an optimal loading height could be identified. Experiments confirm these trends by showing an improvement in burner thermal efficiency of 2.5% for LPG with the modified design, and 10% for PNG with the optimal loading height, demonstrating that the CFD modeling approach developed in the present work is a useful tool to study domestic burners. The presence of moisture in oil impregnated paper insulation (OIP) is detrimental to its long time performance. Until recently, it was thought insulation ageing was only a function of temperature and electrical stress. It has now been realized that moisture in all its forms causes rapid degradation of the electrical and mechanical properties with time. In this study, insulation paper samples were conditioned for desired level of moisture and were impregnated with premium quality transformer oil. The oil impregnated samples with 1 to 3 % moisture content were aged at 90 to 130 C. The indices for determining the extent of ageing considered in this work are degree of polymerization (DP), furan, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide content. These quantities were monitored throughout the ageing experimental run. End-of-life (EOL) criterion used here is the reduction in the value of DP. Phenomenological models for estimating the service life of insulation are proposed and are validated against actual experimental data.

A family of high molecular weight castor oil (CO)-based biodegradable polyanhydrides was synthesized by a catalyst-free melt-condensation reaction between prepolymers of CO and sebacic acid (SA). The structure of the polymers was characterized by H-1 NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, which indicated the formation of the anhydride bond along the polymer backbone. Thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction confirmed the semicrystalline nature of the polymers. Incorporation of SA enhanced the crystallinity of the polymer. The hydrophobic nature of these polymers was revealed by contact angle goniometry. Water wettability decreased with increase in SA content. Compressive tests demonstrated a sharp increase in strength and decrease in ductility with increasing SA content. In vitro hydrolytic degradation studies indicated surface-eroding behavior. The degradation rate decreased with an increase of SA content in the polymers because of increased crystallinity. The release studies of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic dyes followed zero-order kinetics. In vitro cell studies to assess the cytotoxicity of the polymer confirmed minimal toxicity of the degradation products. Thus, a family of CO-SA polyanhydrides have been synthesized and characterized for controlled release applications where the physical, mechanical, and degradation kinetics can be modulated by varying the weight fraction of the prepolymers.

Food industries like biscuit and confectionary use significant amount of fossil fuel for thermal energy. Biscuit manufacturing in India is carried out both by organized and unorganized sector. The ratio of organized to unorganized sector is 60 : 40 (1). The total biscuit manufacturing in the organized sector India in 2008 was about 1.7 million metric tons (1). Accounting for the unorganized sector in India, the total biscuit manufacturing would have been about 2.9 million metric tons/annum. A typical biscuit baking is carried in a long tunnel kiln with varying temperature in different zones. Generally diesel is used to provide the necessary heat energy for the baking purpose, with temperature ranging from 190 C in the drying zone to about 300 C in the baking area and has to maintain in the temperature range of +/- 5 C. Typical oil consumption is about 40 litres per ton of biscuit production. The paper discusses the experience in substituting about 120 lts per hour kiln for manufacturing about 70 tons of biscuit daily. The system configuration consists of a 500 kg/hr gasification system comprising of a reactor, multicyclone, water scrubbers, and two blowers for maintaining the constant gas pressure in the header before the burners. Cold producer gas is piped to the oven located about 200 meters away from the gasifier. Fuel used in the gasification system is coconut shells. All the control system existing on the diesel burner has been suitably adapted for producer gas operation to maintain the total flow, A/F control so as to maintain the temperature. A total of 7 burners are used in different zones. Over 17000 hour of operation has resulted in replacing over 1800 tons of diesel over the last 30 months. The system operates for over 6 days a week with average operational hours of 160. It has been found that on an average 3.5 kg of biomass has replaced one liter of diesel.

A family of soybean oil (SO) based biodegradable cross-linked copolyesters sourced from renewable resources was developed for use as resorbable biomaterials. The polyesters were prepared by a melt condensation of epoxidized soybean oil polyol and sebacic acid with citric acid (CA) as a cross-linker. D-Mannitol (M) was added as an additional reactant to improve mechanical properties. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed that the polyester synthesized using only CA as the cross-linker was semicrystalline and elastomeric at physiological temperature. The polymers were hydrophobic in nature. The water wettability, elongation at break and the degradation rate of the polyesters decreased with increase in M content or curing time. Modeling of release kinetics of dyes showed a diffusion controlled mechanism underlies the observed sustained release from these polymers. The polyesters supported attachment and proliferation of human stem cells and were thus cytocompatible. Porous scaffolds induced osteogenic differentiation of the stern cells suggesting that these polymers are well suited for bone tissue engineering. Thus, this family of polyesters offers a low cost and green alternative as biocompatible, bioresobable polymers for potential use as resorbable biomaterials for tissue engineering and controlled release.

The present study focuses on exploring air-assisted atomization strategies for effective atomization of high-viscosity biofuels, such as pure plant oils (PPOs). The first part of the study concerns application of a novel air-assisted impinging jet atomization for continuous spray applications, and the second part concerns transient spray applications. The particle/droplet imaging analysis (PDIA) technique along with direct imaging methods are used for the purpose of spray characterization. In the first part, effective atomization of Jatropha PPO is demonstrated at gas-to-liquid ratios (GLRs) on the order 0.1. The effect of liquid and gas flow rates on the spray characteristics is evaluated, and results indicate a Sauter mean diameter (SMD) of 50 mu m is achieved with GLRs as low as 0.05. In the second part of the study, a commercially available air-assisted transient atomizer is evaluated using Jatropha PPO. The effect of the pressure difference across the air injector and ambient gas pressure on liquid spray characteristics is studied. The results indicate that it is possible to achieve the same level of atomization of Jatropha as diesel fuel by operating the atomizer at a higher pressure difference. Specifically, a SMD of 44 mu m is obtained for the Jatropha oil using injection pressures of <1 MPa. A further interesting observation associated with this injector is the near constancy of a nondimensional spray penetration rate for the Jatropha oil spray.

Pulverized coal combustion in tangentially fired furnaces with fuel rich/lean burners was investigated for three low volatile coals. The burners were operated under the conditions with varied value N-d, which means the ratio of coal concentration of the fuel rich stream to that of the fuel lean stream. The wall temperature distributions in various positions were measured and analyzed. The carbon content in the char and Nox emission were detected under various conditions. The new burners with fuel rich/lean streams were utilized in a thermal power station to burn low volatile coal. The results show that the N-d value has significant influences on the distributions of temperature and char burnout. There exists an optimal N-d value under which the carbon content in the char and the Nox emission is relatively low. The coal ignition and Nox emission in the utilized power station are improved after retrofitting the burners.

Numerical simulation of an oil slick spreading on still and wavy surfaces is described in this paper. The so-called sigma transformation is used to transform the time-varying physical domain into a fixed calculation domain for the water wave motions and, at the same time, the continuity equation is changed into an advection equation of wave elevation. This evolution equation is discretized by the forward time and central space scheme, and the momentum equations by the projection method. A damping zone is set up in front of the outlet boundary coupled with a Sommerfeld-Orlanski condition at that boundary to minimize the wave reflection. The equations for the oil slick are depth-averaged and coupled with the water motions when solving numerically. As examples, sinusoidal and solitary water waves, the oil spread on a smooth plane and on still and wavy water surfaces are calculated to examine the accuracy of simulating water waves by Navier-Stokes equations, the effect of damping zone on wave reflection and the precise structures of oil spread on waves.

The gathering systems of crude oil are greatly endangered by the fine sand and soil in oil. Up to now , how to separate sand from the viscid oil is still a technical problem for oil production home or abroad. Recently , Institute of Mechanics in Chinese Academy of Sciences has developed a new type of oil-sand separator , which has been applied successfully in oil field in situ. In this paper, the numerical method of vortex-stream function is used to predict the liquid-solid separating course and the efficiency for this oil-sand separator. Results show that the viscosity and particle diameter have much influence on the particle motion. The calculating separating efficiency is compared with that of experiment and indicates that this method can be used to model the complex two-phase flow in the separator.

This paper carries out the analysis of mechanics of a grip system of three-key-board hydraulic tongs developed for offshore oil pipe lines which has been successfully used in oil fields in China. The main improvement of this system is that a lever frame structure is used in the structural design, which reduces greatly the stresses of the major components of the oil pipe tongs. Theoretical analysis and numerical calculation based on thirteen basic equations developed Show that the teeth board of the tongs is not easy to slip as frequently happens to other systems and is of higher reliability.
