The Leopold Center was established by the Iowa Legislature as part of the Iowa Groundwater Protection Act of 1987. Its mandated missions are to identify impacts of agricultural practices, contribute to the development of profitable farming systems that conserve natural resources, and cooperate with Iowa State University Extension to inform the public of new findings.Information for this report was compiled by Leopold Center staff with the help of its researchers and educators who are committed to improving Iowa agriculture and the lives of Iowans.

National Survey of Noncommunicable Diseases in Seychelles, 2013-2014 (Seychelles Heart Study IV) : methods and main findings

This report provides information on selected summary results of the National Survey of Noncommunicable Diseases in Seychelles in 2013‐2014 (Seychelles Heart Study IV). The survey is also referred shortly as the "2013 Survey" in this report. Overall crude results were reported in a comprehensive report in November 2014. Further detailed analyses and recommendations on particular topics will be performed separately.

Les comportements face au VIH/sida parmi les migrants originaires d'Afrique subsaharienne en Suisse : Enquête ANSWER 2013-2014

L'enquête Internet ANSWER (African Net Survey WE Respond!) auprès des migrants provenant d'Afrique subsaharienne (ASS) a été menée entre septembre 2013 et février 2014, sur mandat de l'OFSP et avec la collaboration de l'ASS. Cette enquête s'inscrit dans le cadre du mandat de surveillance épidémiologique de deuxième génération du VIH et des autres IST auquel l'IUMSP participe activement. Le but de cette enquête a été de décrire dans cette population les connaissances, attitudes et comportements (en particulier, les comportements sexuels, l'usage de préservatifs et la réalisation de tests de dépistage du VIH) en lien avec la prévention du VIH et des autres infections sexuellement transmissibles. Une analyse exploratoire de facteurs associés à certains comportements (partenaires multiples, utilisation de préservatifs, réalisation de tests) a également été menée. Il s'agissait d'une enquête par Internet auto-administrée disponible en 7 langues, à laquelle les personnes originaires d'Afrique subsaharienne étaient invitées à participer. Un groupe d'accompagnement composé de professionnels de la prévention du VIH et de médiateurs culturels de différents pays africains a participé activement à toutes les étapes du projet (conception du questionnaire, traductions, cognitive testing, promotion de l'enquête, mobilisation communautaire).

Retrospective study of pre-anesthetic electrocardiogram examination of 700 dogs conducted at the Veterinary Hospital of UFMG (2013-2014)

Abstract: Pre-operative electrocardiograms performed in 700 dogs were analyzed in order to establish correlation between sex, age, indication for surgery, body condition score, breed and weight. Initially a clinical questionnaire was filled out from each owner, including age, breed, sex, weight, clinical history and surgical indication. Dogs above 6 years of age or those showing any kind of cardiac auscultation disturbances were referred to electrocardiogram (ECG) evaluation. All ECG were performed and analyzed by the same veterinary specialist. Abnormalities at ECG were founnd in 364 of 700 (52%) evaluated dogs, and the most frequent variation was sinus arrhythmia, observed in 293 dogs (25.4%). No significant correlation was found between the electrocardiographic alterations with weight, sex and age of the animals. Therefore ECG should be conducted routinely regardless of age, sex, breed or surgical indication, highlighting its value for determining a safe anesthetic protocol that promotes minimal cardiopulmonary depression and allows rapid post-surgical recovery.
