Gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) nanotubes of micron length and average diameter 100 nm have been synthesized by a controlled template-assisted electrochemical deposition technique. Structure and morphology of the synthesized nanotubes have been well characterized by using microscopy and spectroscopy analyses. HRTEM and XRD analysis revealed the crystalline planes of Gd2O3 nanotubes. Magnetic measurements of the aligned Gd2O3 nanotubes have been performed for both parallel and perpendicular orientations of the magnetic field with respect to the axis of the Gd2O3 nanotube array. Large bifurcation in ZFC-FC over the regime of 2-320 K without any signature of long range magnetic ordering confirms the presence of SPM clusters in Gd2O3 nanotubes. Also, large magnetocaloric effect is observed in the cryogenic temperature regime. No anisotropy is seen at the low temperature region but is found to evolve with temperature and becomes significant 300 K. These nanotubes can be considered as promising candidates for magnetic refrigeration at cryogenic temperature. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Achieving control on the formation of different organization states of magnetic nanoparticles is crucial to harness their organization dependent physical properties in desired ways. In this study, three organization states of iron oxide nanoparticles (gamma-Fe2O3), defining as (i) assembly (ii) network aggregate and (iii) cluster, have been developed by simply changing the solvent evaporation conditions. All three systems have retained the same phase and polydispersity of primary particles. Magnetic measurements show that the partial alignment of the easy axes of the particles in the network system due to the stacking aggregation morphology can result in significant enhancement of the coercivity and remanence values, while the opposite is obtained for the cluster system due to the random orientation of easy axes. Partial alignment in the aggregate system also results in noticeable non -monotonic field dependence of ZFC peak temperature (TpeaB). The lowest value of the blocking temperature (TB) for the cluster system is related to the lowering of the effective anisotropy due to the strongest demagnetizing effect. FC (Field cooled) memory effect was observed to be decreasing with the increasing strength of dipolar interaction of organization states. Therefore, the stacking aggregation and the cluster formation are two interesting ways of magnetic nanoparticles organization for modulating collective magnetic properties significantly, which can have renewed application potentials from recording devices to biomedicine. Despite intensive research on optimizing the methods for depositing carbon encapsulated ferromagnetic nanoparticles, the effect of the carbon cages remains unclear. In the present work, the effect of the graphitic cages on the magnetization of the ferromagnetic core has been studied by comparing the magnetic properties of pure and carbon encapsulated Ni particles of the same size. The carbon encapsulated Ni particles were formed using an electric arc discharge in de-ionized water between a solid graphite cathode and an anode consisting of Ni and C in a mass ratio of Ni:C = 7:3. This method is shown to have potential for low cost production of carbon encapsulated Ni nanoparticle samples with narrow particle size distributions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analysis were used to study the crystallography, morphology, and size distribution of the encapsulated and pure Ni nanoparticle samples. The availability of encapsulated particles with various sizes allowed us to elucidate the role of carbon cages in size-dependent properties. Our data suggest that even though encapsulation is beneficial for protection against hostile chemical environments and for avoiding low proximity phenomena, it suppresses the saturation magnetization of the Ni cores.

The transition from hard to soft magnetic behaviour with increasing quenching rate is shown for Nd60WAl10Fe20Co10 melt-spun ribbons with different thickness. Microstructure and magnetic domain structure of ribbons were studied by magnetic force microscopy (MFM). Particle sizes < 5 nm decreasing gradually with increasing quenching rate were deduced from topographic images which differ from large-scale magnetic domains with a periodicity of about 350 nm in all ribbons irrespective the coercivity. This indicates that the magnetic properties of the alloy are governed by interaction of small magnetic particles. It is concluded that the presence of short-range-ordered structures with a local ordering similar to the Al metastable Nd-Fe binary phase is responsible for the hard magnetic properties in samples subjected to relatively low quenching rate.

Bonded networks of metal fibres are highly porous, permeable materials, which often exhibit relatively high strength. Material of this type has been produced, using melt-extracted ferritic stainless steel fibres, and characterised in terms of fibre volume fraction, fibre segment (joint-to-joint) length and fibre orientation distribution. Young's moduli and yield stresses have been measured. The behaviour when subjected to a magnetic field has also been investigated. This causes macroscopic straining, as the individual fibres become magnetised and tend to align with the applied field. The modeling approach of Markaki and Clyne, recently developed for prediction of the mechanical and magneto-mechanical properties of such materials, is briefly summarised and comparisons are made with experimental data. The effects of filling the inter-fibre void with compliant (polymeric) matrices have also been explored. In general the modeling approach gives reliable predictions, particularly when the network architecture has been characterised using X-ray tomography. © 2005 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The thermal stability of nanocrystalline clusters, the phase evolution, and their effects on magnetic Propertieswere studied for as-cast Nd60Al10Fe20Co10 alloy using differential scanning calorimetry curves, x-ray diffraction patterns, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transition electron microscopy. Thermomagnetic curves and hysteresis loops of the bulk metallic glass were measured during the annealing process. The high thermostability of the hardmagnetic properties of the samples observed is attributed to the stability of the nanocrystalline clusters upon annealing, while the slight enhancement in the magnetization is due to the precipitation of some Nd-rich metastable phases. The mechanism of thermostability of the nanocrystalline clusters and the formation of the metastable phases are discussed.

The magnetic properties of melt-processed YBa2Cu3O7-δ thick films have been measured and correlated with features in the microstructure at 4.2 and 77 K for film thicknesses between 50 and 140 μm. A qualitative model for the volume magnetization of the films at 4.2 K is proposed in terms of the individual contributions from intra H-S grain, inter H-S grain and granular Jc components.

Mn+ ions were implanted into n-type Ge(111) single crystal at room temperature at an energy of 100 keV with a dose of 3 x 1016 cm-2. Subsequent annealing was performed on the samples at 400 °C and 600 °C in a flowing nitrogen atmosphere. The magnetic properties of the samples have been investigated by alternating gradient magnetometer at room temperature. The compositional properties of the annealed samples were studied by Auger electron spectroscopy and the structural properties were analyzed by X-ray diffraction measurements. Magnetization measurements reveal room-temperature ferromagnetism for the annealed samples. The magnetic analysis supported by compositional and structural properties indicates that forming the diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) MnxGe1-x after annealing may account for the ferromagnetic behavior in the annealed samples.

Cobalt-doped ZnO (Zn1-xCoxO) thin films were fabricated by reactive magnetron cosputtering. The processing conditions were carefully designed to avoid the occurrence of Co precipitations. The films are c-axis oriented, and the solubility limit of Co in ZnO is less than 17%, determined by x-ray diffraction. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements show Co ions have a chemical valance of 2+. In this paper, hysteresis loops were clearly observed for Zn1-xCoxO films at room temperature. The coercive field, as well as saturation magnetization per Co atom, decreases with increasing Co content, within the range of 0.07

Sintered magnets of Sm2Fe17Ny nitrides, with a density of 6.0-7.4 g/cm3, have been prepared by using an explosion technique. Both crystalline structure and the magnetic properties of Sm2Fe17Ny nitrides were retained in the process. The sintered magnet had a remanence B(r)=0.83 T, an intrinsic coercivity mu(0i)H(c)=0.57 T and an energy product (BH)max=88 kJ/m3. The temperature dependence of coercivity and remanence were also measured. The temperature coefficients alpha of remanence and beta of coercivity are -0.076%/degrees-C and -0.51%/degrees-C, respectively.

The amorphous phases of the Pd-Cu-P system has been obtained using the technique of rapidly quenching from the liquid state. Broad maxima in the diffraction pattern were obtained in the X-ray diffraction studies which are indicative of a glass-like structure. The composition range over which the amorphous solid phase is retained for the Pd-Cu-P system is (Pd100-xCux)80P20 with 10 ≤ x ≤ 50 and (Pd65Cu35)100-yPy with 15 ≤ y ≤ 24 and (Pd60Cu40)100-yPy with 15 ≤ y ≤ 24.
The electrical resistivity for the Pd-Cu-P alloys decreases with temperature as T2 at low temperatures and as T at high temperatures up to the crystallization temperature. The structural scattering model of the resistivity proposed by Sinha and the spin-fluctuation resistivity model proposed by Hasegawa are re-examined in the light of the similarity of this result to the Pt-Ni-P and Pd-Ni-P systems. Objections are raised to these interpretations of the resistivity results and an alternate model is proposed consistent with the new results on Pd-Cu-P and the observation of similar effects in crystalline transition metal alloys. The observed negative temperature coefficients of resistivity in these amorphous alloys are thus interpreted as being due to the modification of the density of states with temperature through the electron-phonon interaction. The weak Pauli paramagnetism of the Pd-Cu-P, Pt-Ni-P and Pd-Ni-P alloys is interpreted as being modifications of the transition d-states as a result of the formation of strong transition metal-metalloid bonds rather than a large transfer of electrons from the glass former atoms (P in this case) to the d-band of the transition metal in a rigid band picture.

The influence of composition on the structure and on the electric and magnetic properties of amorphous Pd-Mn-P and Pd-Co-P prepared by rapid quenching techniques were investigated in terms of (1) the 3d band filling of the first transition metal group, (2) the phosphorus concentration effect which acts as an electron donor and (3) the transition metal concentration.
The structure is essentially characterized by a set of polyhedra subunits essentially inverse to the packing of hard spheres in real space. Examination of computer generated distribution functions using Monte Carlo random statistical distribution of these polyhedra entities demonstrated tile reproducibility of the experimentally calculated atomic distribution function. As a result, several possible "structural parameters" are proposed such as: the number of nearest neighbors, the metal-to-metal distance, the degree of short-range order and the affinity between metal-metal and metal-metalloid. It is shown that the degree of disorder increases from Ni to Mn. Similar behavior is observed with increase in the phosphorus concentration.
The magnetic properties of Pd-Co-P alloys show that they are ferromagnetic with a Curie temperature between 272 and 399°K as the cobalt concentration increases from 15 to 50 at.%. Below 20 at.% Co the short-range exchange interactions which produce the ferromagnetism are unable to establish a long-range magnetic order and a peak in the magnetization shows up at the lowest temperature range . The electric resistivity measurements were performed from liquid helium temperatures up to the vicinity of the melting point (900°K). The thermomagnetic analysis was carried out under an applied field of 6.0 kOe. The electrical resistivity of Pd-Co-P shows the coexistence of a Kondo-like minimum with ferromagnetism. The minimum becomes less important as the transition metal concentration increases and the coefficients of ℓn T and T^2 become smaller and strongly temperature dependent. The negative magnetoresistivity is a strong indication of the existence of localized moment.
The temperature coefficient of resistivity which is positive for Pd- Fe-P, Pd-Ni-P, and Pd-Co-P becomes negative for Pd-Mn-P. It is possible to account for the negative temperature dependence by the localized spin fluctuation model and the high density of states at the Fermi energy which becomes maximum between Mn and Cr. The magnetization curves for Pd-Mn-P are typical of those resulting from the interplay of different exchange forces. The established relationship between susceptibility and resistivity confirms the localized spin fluctuation model. The magnetoresistivity of Pd-Mn-P could be interpreted in tenns of a short-range magnetic ordering that could arise from the Rudennan-Kittel type interactions.
