A method of immersion of panels for ecological studies on marine fouling and boring organisms

The importance of studies on the biology of marine foulers and borers needs no emphasis since they cause damage to submerged wooden structures resulting in considerable economic loss. In order to study their occurrence, settlement and to assess the rate of destruction to timber, several immersion techniques using iron racks, cages and rafts have been adopted. On the east and west coasts of India, at the Marine Centres of Forest Research Institute (Waltair, Madras, Cohin and Bombay) investigations have so far been carried out employing the first two methods.

Design method of an innovative motor for an intra-aortic ventricular assist device

A permanent-magnet motor has been designed for an innovative axial-flow ventricular assist device (VAD), to be placed in the descending aorta, intended to offload the left ventricle and augment renal perfusion in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). For this application, an intra-aortic impeller with a built-in permanent magnet rotor is driven by an extraaortic stator working in synchronism with the natural heart. To meet this need, a two-dimensional analytical model has been developed in the MATLAB environment to estimate machine parameters; finite element analysis (FEA) has been used to refine the results. A prototype blood pump equipped with an innovative motor designed from the procedure above has been tested in a mock loop representing the human circulatory system. The performance of VAD incorporating the motor is presented. © 2009 IEEE.

The Modeling of Ion Implantation in a Three-Layer Structure Using the Method of Dose Matching

The method of modeling ion implantation in a multilayer target using moments of a statistical distribution and numerical integration for dose calculation in each target layer is applied to the modelling of As⁺ in poly-Si/SiO2/Si. A method of creating micro patterned devices by patterning thin films which are deposited on a substrate. A channel or channels is created on the substrate, the width being of fine enough resolution such that a flowable mask material can be drawn along the channel by capillary forces.

A non-intrusive in situ method of optical beam profiling in LCOS-based optical fiber switches

This paper proposed a non-intrusive method of measuring the optical beam profile at the surface of the liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) device in an optical fiber switch. This method is based on blazed grating and can be employed in situ (on-line) for two-dimensional beam profiling in the LCOS-based optical fiber switches without introducing additional components or rearranging the system. The measured beam radius was in excellent agreement with that measured by the knife-edge technique. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Validation of a method of estimating age, modelling growth, and describing the age composition of Coilia mystus from the Yangtze Estuary, China

A collection of 577 Coilia mystus was made during April 2006 and 2007 from China's Yangtze Estuary to estimate the age structure and growth patterns of the population. Examination of sectioned sagittal otoliths revealed a periodic straight/curved growth pattern. The straight zone was from April to November, and the curved zone from October to May, indicating annual periodicity. Annual periodicity was also verified by margin zone analysis. The shift from a curved-zone to the next straight-zone stanza was defined as an annulus. The fish from which the otoliths were taken were 0-5 years old. The von Bertalanffy growth function was fitted to standard length (LS)-at-age data as L-S = 215.16 (1 - e(-0.53(t+0.30))) (n = 577, r(2) = 0.81, p < 0.05). The mature females included five age classes, ages 1 and 2 accounting for 74.3% of the population. The mature males included fish aged 1 and 2, those at age 1 accounting for 86.4% of the population. Mean length was smaller, and annual growth less, for mature males than for females of comparable age. The study demonstrated that the Yangtze population of C. mystus consists of more age classes than previously thought and that the age structure of the population needs to be considered in management decisions.

A novel method of extraction of blend component structure from SANS measurements of homopolymer bimodal blends

A new method is presented for the extraction of single-chain form factors and interchain interference functions from a range of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments on bimodal homopolymer blends. The method requires a minimum of three blends, made up of hydrogenated and deuterated components with matched degree of polymerization at two different chain lengths, but with carefully varying deuteration levels. The method is validated through an experimental study on polystyrene homopolymer bimodal blends with M A≈1/2MB. By fitting Debye functions to the structure factors, it is shown that there is good agreement between the molar mass of the components obtained from SANS and from chromatography. The extraction method also enables, for the first time, interchain scattering functions to be produced for scattering between chains of different lengths. © 2014 The Authors. An Automatic Classification Method of Metabolic Cycle Based on Biomimetic Pattern Recognition

Correct classification of different metabolic cycle stages to identification cell cycle is significant in both human development and clinical diagnostics. However, it has no perfect method has been reached in classification of metabolic cycle yet. This paper exploringly puts forward an automatic classification method of metabolic cycle based on Biomimetic pattern recognition (BPR). As to the three phases of yeast metabolic cycle, the correct classification rate reaches 90%, 100% and 100% respectively.
