Statement of John O'Connor Damaged Wheat Crop

Statement (handwritten, 3 pages) in which John O’Connor states that his wheat crop of 1834 was damaged. A fence was also down which resulted in his wheat crop being destroyed by cattle and pigs. The defendants had to pay the plaintiff for damages. S. D. Woodruff was the arbitrator in this case, Aug. 1835.

John Lewis Partnership lessons in logical incrementalism and organic growth: a case study and interview with the Chairman, Mr Charlie Mayfield

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how strategy is developed and implemented in an organisation with an unusual ownership model. Partnerships are not a prevalent form of ownership but as this case demonstrates they can be extremely effective. Furthermore this case demonstrates how logical incrementalism can be used to implement major strategic decisions. Design/methodology/approach – The paper draws on company documentary evidence and a semi-structured interview with Mr Charlie Mayfield, Chairman of John Lewis Partnership. A chairman has a helicopter view of business whose perspectives are rarely captured by strategy researchers. This case study offers an insight into strategic thinking of a chairman and chief executive of a successful company. Research limitations/implications – The case study and interview offer a unique insight into the rationale behind strategic decisions within a successful partnership that has grown organically in a highly competitive retail market without high gearing. Originality/value – This case study sheds light on strategic moves within partnership. Furthermore, very few case studies offer insight into the thinking of a chief executive who has successfully managed a business in a turbulent environment.

The Marshall Family Papers includes originals and photocopies of two letters written by Fred D. Marshall of Rock Hill. The first is from Camp Thomas in Chickamauga, Georgia and the second was from Camp Cuba Libre in Jacksonville, FL. while he was a soldier during the Spanish American War to his parents, Capt and Mrs. John Wilson Marshall of Rock Hill Also included is a letter by W.W. Byre to Capt. John Wilson Marshall while a missionary in Mexico. Fred D. Marshall served as mayor of Columbia from 1941 to 1946 and W.W. Byre became Dean of Erskine Theological Seminary at Due West, SC.

John La Farge as collector of Japanese art : motivations and reflections

Throughout his lifetime, American artist John La Farge (1835-1910) amassed an enormous collection of art and books. La Farge’s study of art and culture encompassed several genres and aesthetic elements. La Farge has been credited as the first American artist — even prior to James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903)— to integrate visual elements and cultural awareness of the Far East within his own Western-trained art. Although many scholars have studied La Farge’s art and life from various perspectives, including his interest in Asian art, the object of the present study is solely focused on La Farge’s collecting of Japanese art.

Letter from John Kirkland to Loammi Baldwin, 15 April 1813

Kirkland informs Baldwin that has ideas about the construction of University Hall, and requests to meet with Baldwin. Kirkland states that he does "not see the occasion for losing ten thousand dollars from modesty."

In this letter, Lowell approves of Baldwin's contracting with Walton & Moore for the construction of University Hall.

Lowell recounts meeting Mr. Nelson, a bidder for the stucco and plastering work for University Hall. Lowell recommends that a decision should be made on the work within a week.

Bemis, responding to an advertisement from Lowell and Baldwin requesting bids for building materials, outlines his proposal for using Chelmsford granite for the construction of University Hall. Bemis lists 12 stipulations in his proposal including costs per bricks, techniques for constructing the upper storeys, and labor costs.

Moore and Walton's projected cost for finishing University Hall is $5,386.61. This includes finishing the roof, laying the floors, and installing the gutters and windows.

This contract includes stipulations for finishing the two kitchens, windows, and floors in University Hall by the first of August 1815.

Annotated almanac, 1755

Almanac containing calendar pages with sporadic annotations of measurements and small one-word notes. Winthrop often corrected the almanac's printed chart for the rising and setting of the sun. There are a few handwritten entries including a note in Latin about Winthrop's mother. An unattached sheet of paper folded into the almanac has burial and baptism statistics for Boston and Charleston, and entries about General Braddock's defeat by the French (July 9), a battle between General Johnson and the French and Indians under the Baron de Dieskau (September 8), the execution of two slaves for murdering their master (September 18), and a note that President Holyoke preached the Dudleian lecture (November 25).
