La0.7Ca0.3MnO3/Mn3O4 composites can be synthesized in one step by thermal treatment of a spray-dried precursor, instead of mixing pre-synthesized powders. Another advantage of this composite system is that a long sintering step can be used without leading to significant modification of the manganite composition. The percolation threshold is reached at ∼20 vol% of manganite phase. The 77 K low field magnetoresistance is enhanced to ∼11% at 0.15 T when the composition is close to the percolation threshold. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) polymer composites are envisioned as the next-generation composite materials for a wide range of applications. In this work, we investigate the erosive wear behavior of epoxy matrix composites reinforced with both randomly dispersed and aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays. The aligned CNT composites are prepared in two different configurations, where the sidewalls and ends of nanotubes are exposed to the composite surface. Results have shown that the composite with vertically aligned CNT-arrays exhibits superior erosive wear resistance compared to any of the other types of composites, and the erosion rate reaches a similar performance level to that of carbon steel at 20° impingement angle. The erosive wear mechanism of this type of composite, at various impingement angles, is studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). We report that the erosive wear performance shows strong dependence on the alignment geometries of CNTs within the epoxy matrix under identical nanotube loading fractions. Correlations between the eroded surface roughness and the erosion rates of the CNT composites are studied by surface profilometry. This work demonstrates methods to fabricate CNT based polymer composites with high loading fractions of the filler, alignment control of nanotubes and optimized erosive wear properties. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Opened hollow microspheres of organoclays were prepared via spray drying the suspension of modified Na+-montmorillonite (Na+-MMT) with alkylsulfonate. The microstructure and thermal properties of these opened hollow spheres were characterized by means of wide-angle X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results showed that the organoclays had larger interlayer spacing compared with pure Na+-MMT and higher thermal stability relative to the alkylsufonate.

A novel glucose biosensor based on immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOD) in thin films of polyethylenimine-functionalized ionic liquid (PFIL), containing a mixture of carbon nanotubes (CNT) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and deposited on glassy carbon electrodes, was developed. Direct electrochemistry of glucose oxidase in the film was observed, with linear glucose response up to 12 mM. The PFIL-stabilized gold nanoparticles had a diameter of 2.4 +/- 0.8 nm and exhibited favorable stability (stored even over one month with invisible change in UV-vis spectroscopic measurements).

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was incorporated into multiwalled carbon nanotube/thionine/Au (MTAu) composite film by electrostatic interactions between positively charged HRP and negatively charged MTAu composite. The results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) confirmed adsorption of HRP on the surface of MTAu modified GC electrode.

Magnetic functionalization of the ordered mesoporous SBA-15 (SiO2) aggregate blocks and rice grain-like particles were realized by using a sol-gel method, resulting in the formation of FexOy@SBA-15 composite materials. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption/desorption, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results show that these composites conserved ordered mesoporous structure after the formation of FexOy nanoparticles in the pores and on the outer surface of SBA-15. It was confirmed by the XRD and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis that the FexOy generated in these mesoporous silica hosts is mainly composed of gamma-Fe2O3. Magnetic measurements reveal that these composites possess superparamagnetic properties at 300 K. The saturation magnetization of these composites increased with the increasing loading amount of gamma-Fe2O3. These composites, which possess high surface area and high pore volume, show magnetic response sufficient for drug targeting in the presence of an external magnetic field.
