The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was studied in KOH electrolyte on carbon supported epsilon-manganese dioxide (epsilon-MnO2/C). The epsilon-MnO2/C catalyst was prepared via thermal decomposition of manganese nitrate and carbon powder (Vulcan XC-72) mixtures. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) measurements were performed in order to determine the crystalline structure of the resulting composite, while energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) was used to evaluate the chemical composition of the synthesized material. The electrochemical studies were conducted using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and quasi-steady state polarization measurements carried out with an ultra thin layer rotating ring/disk electrode (RRDE) configuration. The electrocatalytic results obtained for 20% (w/w) Pt/C (E-TEK Inc., USA) and alpha-MnO2/C for the ORR, considered as one of the most active manganese oxide based catalyst for the ORR in alkaline media, were included for comparison. The RRDE results revealed that the ORR on the MnO2 catalysts proceeds preferentially through the complete 4e(-) reduction pathway via a 2 plus 2e(-) reduction process involving hydrogen peroxide as an intermediate. A benchmark close to the performance of 20% (w/w) Pt/C (E-TEK Inc., USA) was observed for the epsilon-MnO2/C material in the kinetic control region, superior to the performance of alpha-MnO2/C, but a higher amount of HO2- was obtained when epsilon-MnO2/C was used as catalyst. The higher production of hydrogen peroxide on epsilon-MnO2/C was related to the presence of structural defects, typical of this oxide, while the better catalytic performance in the kinetic control region compared to alpha-MnO2/C was related with the higher electrochemical activity for the proton insertion kinetics, which is a structure sensitive process. Therapeutic RNAs, especially siRNAs, are a promising approach for treating diseases like cancer, neurodegenerative disorders and viral infections. Their application, however, is limited due to a lack of safe and efficient delivery systems. Nanosized carriers with the ability to either complex or entrap RNA species are a promising option. rn rn rnSuch a carrier has to meet a lot of requirements, some of which are even partly contradictive. Understanding and controlling the interplay between the different demands would advance a strategic design at an early stage of therapeutic development. rn rn This work is centered around a systematic evaluation of polyplexes, such carriers that are able to complex siRNA due to electrostatic interactions. Six structurally and chemically diverse candidates, poly-L-lysine brushes, block copolymers, cationic peptides, cationic lipids, nanohydrogels, and manganese oxide particles, were tested in a simultaneous fashion. The assays, mostly based on fluorescently labeled siRNA, ranged from the evaluation of polyplex formation and stability to in vitro parameters like cellular uptake and knockdown capability. The analysis from several perspectives offered insight into the interplay between the specifications of one polyplex. Assessing the different carriers under exactly the same experimental conditions also allowed conclusions about favourable traits and starting points for further optimization. This comparative approach also revealed weaknesses of some of the conventional protocols, which were therefore contrasted with alternative methods. In addition, in vitro knockdown assays were optimized and the impact of fluorescently labeled siRNA on knockdown efficiency was assessed. rn rn rn A second class of carriers, which share the ability to entrap siRNA inside their matrix, are briefly addressed. Nanocapsules, dextran particles and liposomes were assessed for basic features like siRNA encapsulation and knockdown capability. rn rn rn rn In an approach towards targeted delivery of RNA, liposomes were endowed with mitochondriotropic tags. Despite successful functionalization, no colocalization between the liposomal cargo and mitochondria was so far observed, which makes further optimization necessary.

During the last few years a great deal of research has been done in connection with the black manganese oxide minerals. This is especially true of the so called mineral psilomelane. It has been proven without a doubt that the name psilomelane has been used in the past to include a great variety of similar black manganese oxide minerals. By the use of X-ray equipment these minerals have been definitely identified.

A total of 167 samples distubuted throughout the CRP-3 drillhole from 5.77 to 787.68 mbsf and representing fine to coarse sandstones have been analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) Bulk sample geochemistry (major and trace elements) indicates a dominant provenance of detritus from the Ferrar Supergroup in the uppermost 200 mbsf of the core. A markedly increased contribution from the Beacon sandstones is recognized below 200 mbsf and down to 600 mbsf. In the lower part of CRP-3, down to 787.68 mbsf, geochemical evidence for influxes of Ferrar materials is again recorded. On the basis of preliminary magnetostratigraphic data reported for the lower 447 mbsf of the drillhole, we tentatively evaluated the main periodicities modulating the geochemical records. Our results identify a possible influence of the precession, obliquity and long-eccentricity astronomical components (21, 41, and 400 ky frequency bands) on the deposition mechanisms of the studied glaciomarine sediments.

Geochemical data are presented for samples from strata, mainly of Miocene age, in the Cape Roberts-1 core (western McMurdo Sound, Antarctica) to assess the sediment provenance. Bulk (major and trace element) chemistry together with bulk mineralogy of fine-grained sandstones, siltstones, mudstones, and diamictites indicate that chemical alteration of source materials, fractionation due to sedimentary sorting, and diagenetic effects were not significant in the Cape Roberts sediment history. Relevant geochemical parameters are consistent with the Cape Roberts sediments being derived mainly from the crystalline basement and the Beacon Supergroup. On the basis of element distributions, an additional contribution from the Ferrar Dolerite and, mainly above about 60 m, influxes of detritus derived from basanitic to intermediate members of the McMurdo Volcanic Group are recognised.

Thirty-nine medium and fine grained sandstones from between 19,26 and 147,23 mbsf in the Cape Roberts-l core (CRP-1) were analysed for 10 major and 16 trace elements. Using whole-lock compositions, 9 samples were selected for analyses of mineral and glass grains by energy dispersive electron microscope. Laser-Ablation Mass-Spectrometry was used to determine rare earth elements and 14 additional trace elements in glass shards, pyroxenes and feldspars in order to examine their contribution to the bulk rock chemistry. Geochemical data reveal the major contribution played by the Granite Harbour Intrusives to the whole rock composition, even if a significant input is supplied by McMurdo volcanics and Ferrar dolerite pyroxenes McMurdo volcanics were studied in detail; they appeal to derive from a variety of litologies, and a dominant role of wind transpoitation from exposures of volcanic rocks may be inferred from the contemporary occurrence of different compositions at all depths. Only at 116.55 mbsf was a thin layer of tephra found, linked to an explosive eruption McMurdo volcanic rocks exhibit larger abundances at depths above 62 mbsf, in correspondence with the onset of volcanic activity in the McMurdo Sound area. From 62 mbsf to the bottom of the core, McMurdo volcanics are less abundant and probably issued from some centres in the McMurdo Sound region. However, available data do not allow the exclusion of wind transport from some eruptive centres active in north Victoria Land at the beginning of the Miocene Epoch.
