Neste trabalho, apresentamos uma ferramenta cujo intuito é auxiliar não-programadores, jogadores de videogame, na criação de extensões na forma de Add-ons para World of Warcraft, o jogo online. Nele, o usuário pode criar extensões customizando completamente sua interface, de forma a reinventar a sua experiência de jogo e melhorar sua jogabilidade. A criação de extensões para aplicativos e jogos surgiu da crescente necessidade de fornecer aos usuários mecanismos eficientes de Programação por Usuário Final, permitindo que os mesmos preenchessem suas necessidades singulares através da criação, customização e especificação de extensões em software. Em World of Warcraft mais especificamente, os Add-ons exploram um tipo de extensão na qual os jogadores passam a programar sua própria interface de usuário ou a fazer uso de interfaces criadas por outros usuários. No entanto, realizar a programação dessas extensões - os Add-ons - não é uma tarefa fácil. Dentro deste contexto, desenvolvemos a ferramenta EUPAT for WoW (do inglês, End-User Programming Assistance Tool for World of Warcraft) que oferece assistência à criação de Add-ons. Além disso, investigamos como usuários jogadores com e sem conhecimento de programação são beneficiados. Os resultados desta pesquisa permitiram refletir sobre as estratégias de assistência de programação por usuário final no contexto de jogos

Die Aufgabenstellung, welche dieser Dissertation zugrunde liegt, lässt sich kurz als die Untersuchung von komponentenbasierten Konzepten zum Einsatz in der Softwareentwicklung durch Endanwender beschreiben. In den letzten 20 bis 30 Jahren hat sich das technische Umfeld, in dem ein Großteil der Arbeitnehmer seine täglichen Aufgaben verrichtet, grundlegend verändert. Der Computer, früher in Form eines Großrechners ausschließlich die Domäne von Spezialisten, ist nun ein selbstverständlicher Bestandteil der täglichen Arbeit. Der Umgang mit Anwendungsprogrammen, die dem Nutzer erlauben in einem gewissen Rahmen neue, eigene Funktionalität zu definieren, ist in vielen Bereichen so selbstverständlich, dass viele dieser Tätigkeiten nicht bewusst als Programmieren wahrgenommen werden. Da diese Nutzer nicht notwendigerweise in der Entwicklung von Software ausgebildet sind, benötigen sie entsprechende Unterstützung bei diesen Tätigkeiten. Dies macht deutlich, welche praktische Relevanz die Untersuchungen in diesem Bereich haben. Zur Erstellung eines Programmiersystems für Endanwender wird zunächst ein flexibler Anwendungsrahmen entwickelt, welcher sich als Basis zur Erstellung solcher Systeme eignet. In Softwareprojekten sind sich ändernde Anforderungen und daraus resultierende Notwendigkeiten ein wichtiger Aspekt. Dies wird im Entwurf des Frameworks durch Konzepte zur Bereitstellung von wieder verwendbarer Funktionalität durch das Framework und Möglichkeiten zur Anpassung und Erweiterung der vorhandenen Funktionalität berücksichtigt. Hier ist zum einen der Einsatz einer serviceorientierten Architektur innerhalb der Anwendung und zum anderen eine komponentenorientierte Variante des Kommando-Musters zu nennen. Zum anderen wird ein Konzept zur Kapselung von Endnutzerprogrammiermodellen in Komponenten erarbeitet. Dieser Ansatz ermöglicht es, unterschiedliche Modelle als Grundlage der entworfenen Entwicklungsumgebung zu verwenden. Im weiteren Verlauf der Arbeit wird ein Programmiermodell entworfen und unter Verwendung des zuvor genannten Frameworks implementiert. Damit dieses zur Nutzung durch Endanwender geeignet ist, ist eine Anhebung der zur Beschreibung eines Softwaresystems verwendeten Abstraktionsebene notwendig. Dies wird durch die Verwendung von Komponenten und einem nachrichtenbasierten Kompositionsmechanismus erreicht. Die vorgenommene Realisierung ist dabei noch nicht auf konkrete Anwendungsfamilien bezogen, diese Anpassungen erfolgen in einem weiteren Schritt für zwei unterschiedliche Anwendungsbereiche.

Background Young children are known to be the most frequent hospital users compared to older children and young adults. Therefore, they are an important population from economic and policy perspectives of health care delivery. In Switzerland complete hospitalization discharge records for children [<5 years] of four consecutive years [2002–2005] were evaluated in order to analyze variation in patterns of hospital use. Methods Stationary and outpatient hospitalization rates on aggregated ZIP code level were calculated based on census data provided by the Swiss federal statistical office (BfS). Thirty-seven hospital service areas for children [HSAP] were created with the method of "small area analysis", reflecting user-based health markets. Descriptive statistics and general linear models were applied to analyze the data. Results The mean stationary hospitalization rate over four years was 66.1 discharges per 1000 children. Hospitalizations for respiratory problem are most dominant in young children (25.9%) and highest hospitalization rates are associated with geographical factors of urban areas and specific language regions. Statistical models yielded significant effect estimates for these factors and a significant association between ambulatory/outpatient and stationary hospitalization rates. Conclusion The utilization-based approach, using HSAP as spatial representation of user-based health markets, is a valid instrument and allows assessing the supply and demand of children's health care services. The study provides for the first time estimates for several factors associated with the large variation in the utilization and provision of paediatric health care resources in Switzerland.

America’s low-income families struggle to protect their children from multiple threats to their health and growth. Many research and advocacy groups explore the health and educational effects of food insecurity, but less is known about these effects on very young children. Children’s HealthWatch, a group of pediatric clinicians and public health researchers, has continuously collected data on the effects of food insecurity alone and in conjunction with other household hardships since 1998. The group’s peer reviewed research has shown that a number of economic risks at the household level, including food, housing and energy insecurity, tend to be correlated. These insecurities alone or in conjunction increase the risk that a young child will suffer various negative health consequences, including increases in lifetime hospitalizations, parental report of fair or poor health,1 or risk for developmental delays.2 Child food insecurity is an incremental risk indicator above and beyond the risk imposed by household-level food insecurity. The Children’sHealthwatch research also suggests public benefits programs modify some of these effects for families experiencing hardships. This empirical evidence is presented in a variety of public venues outside the usual scientific settings, such as congressional hearings, to support the needs of America’s most vulnerable population through policy change. Children’s HealthWatch research supports legislative solutions to food insecurity, including sustained funding for public programs and re-evaluation of the use of the Thrifty Food Plan as the basis of SNAP benefits calculations. Children’s HealthWatch is one of many models to support the American Academy of Pediatrics’ call to “stand up, speak up, and step up for children.”3 No isolated group or single intervention will solve child poverty or multiple hardships. The Flavell (l981) model of cognitive monitoring and metamnemonic development was tested by four experiments conducted to determine whether preschool children (1) recognize that mood, fatigue, and fear are variables that influence learning; and (2) self-monitor their internal states and adjust their study behavior when they are sad or tired.

INTRODUCTION The new ATS/ERS consensus report recommends in vitro validation of multiple-breath inert gas washout (MBW) equipment based on a lung model with simulated physiologic conditions. We aimed to assess accuracy of two MBW setups for infants and young children using this model, and to compare functional residual capacity (FRC) from helium MBW (FRCMBW ) with FRC from plethysmography (FRCpleth ) in vivo. METHODS The MBW setups were based on ultrasonic flow meter technology. Sulfur hexafluoride and helium were used as tracer gases. We measured FRC in vitro for specific model settings with and without carbon dioxide and calculated differences of measured to generated FRC. For in vivo evaluation, difference between FRCMBW and FRCpleth was calculated in 20 healthy children, median age 6.1 years. Coefficient of variation (CV) was calculated per FRC. RESULTS In the infant model (51 runs, FRC 80-300 ml), mean (SD) relative difference between generated and measured FRCs was 0.7 (4.7) %, median CV was 4.4% for measured FRCs. In the young child model, one setting (8 runs, FRC 400 ml) showed a relative difference of up to 13%. For the remaining FRCs (42 runs, FRC 600-1,400 ml), mean (SD) relative difference was -2.0 (3.4) %; median CV was 1.4% for measured FRCs. In vivo FRCpleth exceeded FRCMBW values by 37% on average. CONCLUSIONS Both setups measure lung volumes in the intended age group reliably and reproducibly. Characteristics of different techniques should be considered when measuring lung volumes in vivo. Children typically hold very optimistic views of their own skills but so far, only a few studies have investigated possible correlates of the ability to predict performance accurately. Therefore, this study examined the role of individual differences in performance estimation accuracy as a global metacognitive index for different monitoring and control skills (item-level judgments of learning [JOLs] and confidence judgments [CJs]), metacognitive control processes (allocation of study time and control of answers), and executive functions (cognitive flexibility, inhibition, working memory) in 6-year-olds (N=93). The three groups of under estimators, realists and over estimators differed significantly in their monitoring and control abilities: the under estimators outperformed the over estimators by showing a higher discrimination in CJs between correct and incorrect recognition. Also, the under estimators scored higher on the adequate control of incorrectly recognized items. Regarding the interplay of monitoring and control processes, under estimators spent more time studying items with low JOLs, and relied more systematically on their monitoring when controlling their recognition compared to over estimators. At the same time, the three groups did not differ significantly from each other in their executive functions. Overall, results indicate that differences in performance estimation accuracy are systematically related to other global and item-level metacognitive monitoring and control abilities in children as young as six years of age, while no meaningful association between performance estimation accuracy and executive functions was found.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are classified as pervasive developmental disorders characterized by social, communicative, and behavioral impairments. According to formal and informal reports, children with ASD present with receptive and expressive language delay. Joint attention (JA: the behavior that occurs when two individuals focus on the same object or event) has been identified as a possible marker of delayed language development in children with ASD. In this study, the JA behaviors in children with ASD were contrasted with initially language-matched typically developing (TYP) children across three visits. Measures of language, the frequency, duration, and source of initiation of JA episodes, and the choice of toy during those episodes, were coded. Across visits and groups, mothers initiated more JA episodes than children; however, typical children also initiated more JA episodes than ASD children at visits 1 and 2. Also, the total duration of typically developing children’s JA episodes was generally longer than that of the ASD children’s, significantly so at Visit 2. Significant associations emerged between children’s vocabulary and two measures of JA: frequency and number of maternal initiations. Teaching parents to incorporate JA training in their interactions with their children may likely help children with ASD acquire language.
