O sistema educativo em Portugal rege-se por uma lei fundamental que é a Lei de Bases do Sistema Educativo. Esta lei não se assume como completa, tendo expressa a necessidade de lhe serem feitas adequações. Incumbe ao Ministério da Educação a definição dos normativos legais, que regem a administração e gestão escolar em todo o território nacional, por forma a garantir equidade e harmonização das práticas educativas em todos os estabelecimentos de ensino. Atualmente, a liderança de topo numa instituição escolar concretiza-se pela figura do Diretor de escola ou de agrupamento. É sobre este que recai a responsabilidade de gerir e liderar a instituição escolar em que está inserido, coadjuvado por uma equipa por ele escolhida para o efeito. O desempenho destas funções pressupõe o exercício da liderança de modo a que se adequem as práticas e se mobilizem os recursos para que a visão de escola do Diretor se cumpra. No que se refere à liderança escolar, vários autores se têm debruçado sobre esta temática, mais concretamente sobre as lideranças de sucesso, que se constituem como objeto de investigação do Projeto ISSPP – International Successful School Principal’s Project -, projeto ao abrigo do qual este estudo se desenvolve. O objetivo geral do presente estudo é analisar como é que uma líder escolar promove a comunicação e a circulação da informação no agrupamento que dirige, garantindo uma gestão partilhada, conducente à concretização da sua visão de escola e ao sucesso escolar dos alunos. De referir que esta investigação se insere no paradigma qualitativo. Trata-se de um estudo de caso, cujos dados foram recolhidos com recurso a uma entrevista semidiretiva aplicada à Diretora do Agrupamento. De acordo com os resultados obtidos, a Diretora exerce uma liderança forte mas participada, mostrando-se reflexiva relativamente à comunicação e circulação de informação. Esta reflexão deve-se ao facto de reconhecer, nestes processos, potencial para melhorar o desempenho da organização que dirige, não obstante a assunção das dificuldades de implementação de uma comunicação efetiva. Todavia, constata-se um grande enfoque nas tecnologias de informação e comunicação, para dar resposta às necessidades de comunicação e circulação da informação.

Edward W. Bowslaugh (1843-1923) was the son of Jacob and Anna (Beamer) Bowslaugh. Edward Bowslaugh married Mary Southward, and the couple had six children, Edgar Morley, Edward Freeman, twins Alfred Malcolm and Alice Mary, Annie Olivia, John Jacob and Mabel Florence. Edward W. Bowslaugh was a farmer, contractor and owner of the Grimsby Planing Mills in Grimsby, Ont. and Bowslaugh’s Planing Mill in Kingsville, Ont. The mills manufactured door and sash trim and other wood related products. Some customers contracted the firm to provide wood products for cottages being built at Grimsby Park, the Methodist camp ground. Some time before 1885 Edward Bowslaugh and his family moved to Kingsville, Ont. to open up a new planing mill and door and sash manufactory. He later sold the Grimsby Planing Mills to Daniel Marsh. The diaries and account books include many names of workers as well as friends and family members residing in the Grimsby and Kingsville areas. James M. Bowslaugh (1841-1882) was the son of Jacob and Anna (Beamer) Bowslaugh. James married first Anna Catharine Merritt and after her death in 1875 he married Mary Gee in 1877. James and Anna had three children, Eliza, James Herbert, George Hiram, all died very young. James and Mary Gee had one son, Charles Leopold Kenneth Frederich Bowslaugh, b. 1881. James Bowslaugh was a farmer and lumberman, much like his younger brother Edward. James’ early diaries often note the activities of himself and his brother Edward. Both Edward and James were heavily involved in the Methodist church, teaching or leading Sunday school and attending prayer meetings. Alfred M. Bowslaugh b. 1873 was the son of Edward W. Bowslaugh and his wife Mary Southward. The school notebook is from his days as a student in Kingsville, Ont.

George Cran was the son of a farmer in the parish of Forgue in Aberdeen Shire, Scotland. He became a member of the church at Huntley, Scotland where his devotion to God inspired him to become a Sunday school teacher. He subsequently became a member of the London Missionary Society. In 1801 he was sent to study at the seminary in Gosport, England where he spent two to three years. His desire was to preach Christ to the “heathens”. Messrs. Ringeltaube, Des Granges and Cran were designated to work in India. No ships for the East India Company would grant passage to missionaries due to the open hostility of the government therefore they set sail from Copenhagen on April 20, 1804 and reached Tranquebar on December 5th, 1805. Cran and Des Granges were designated to supervise the churches in Tinnevelly and they were to begin a mission among the northern Circars. This would have meant that they would have to work in two different places which would have separated them by over 500 miles. The society didn’t seem to be aware of the vast hindrances that the missionaries had to face. Cran and Des Granges decided instead to work in Vizagapatam where they were welcomed by many of the European residents. They conducted English services for which they were paid a monthly salary by the governor. They also conducted services for the natives and opened a school for native children. By November of 1806 a mission house had been built and a “charity” school for Eurasian children was opened. Cran and Des Granges were also diligently studying the native language and they began to translate the Bible into Telugu (spoken by the Hindus who live along the lower basins of the Kistna and Godaveri Rivers). In November of 1808 Cran was almost killed by a fever which left him severely weakened. He was only partially recovered, but accepted an invitation by the general who commanded the local district to accompany him on a journey around the province. The journey proved to be too much for Cran and he died on January 6th, 1809. He is buried at Chicacole, India. He is remembered for his successful work at Vizagapatam and his translation of the Bible. The fact that it was 27 years after the arrival of Cran before a single native was converted attests to the fact that this was a very difficult undertaking. The London Missionary Society was formed in 1795 in England by evangelical Anglicans and nonconformists. Fujaba is an Open Source UML CASE tool project started at the software engineering group of Paderborn University in 1997. In 2002 Fujaba has been redesigned and became the Fujaba Tool Suite with a plug-in architecture allowing developers to add functionality easily while retaining full control over their contributions. Multiple Application Domains Fujaba followed the model-driven development philosophy right from its beginning in 1997. At the early days, Fujaba had a special focus on code generation from UML diagrams resulting in a visual programming language with a special emphasis on object structure manipulating rules. Today, at least six rather independent tool versions are under development in Paderborn, Kassel, and Darmstadt for supporting (1) reengineering, (2) embedded real-time systems, (3) education, (4) specification of distributed control systems, (5) integration with the ECLIPSE platform, and (6) MOF-based integration of system (re-) engineering tools. International Community According to our knowledge, quite a number of research groups have also chosen Fujaba as a platform for UML and MDA related research activities. In addition, quite a number of Fujaba users send requests for more functionality and extensions. Therefore, the 8th International Fujaba Days aimed at bringing together Fujaba develop- ers and Fujaba users from all over the world to present their ideas and projects and to discuss them with each other and with the Fujaba core development team.

El presente trabajo contiene un análisis profundo sobre el concepto de Competitividad Nacional y la pertinencia de su medición. El principal objetivo del estudio es aclarar la esencia de tan trascendental y utilizado término, así como la lógica imperante en los más reconocidos índices de medición de la competitividad de las naciones a nivel mundial. En el capítulo 1 se presentan los primeros pasos en el proceso de elucidación, metodología que se eligió para examinar a fondo el término; incluye la revisión histórica del concepto y las posiciones de reconocidas personalidades en el campo entorno a la definición del mismo. El segundo capítulo contiene un razonamiento personal sobre la naturaleza del término y lo que significa ser competitivo como país y, continuando con la metodología del capítulo anterior, se extraen las ideas clave y comunes de los autores citados para concluir con una propuesta de definición de Competitividad Nacional. El tercer capítulo es una presentación de los índices de medición del Foro Económico Mundial (Reporte Global de Competitividad) y de la escuela de negocios IMD (Anuario Mundial de Competitividad), para culminar esta sección con un análisis comparativo entre ambos. El cuarto capítulo es un análisis crítico sobre la validez de estos índices. Por último, el lector encontrará las conclusiones y reflexiones finales de la investigación.

Colombia es un país que ha logrado atraer la atención de diferentes países a nivel mundial debido al comportamiento económico que ha presentado en los últimos años. Gracias a estos resultados, es reconocida como mercado emergente debido a su rápido crecimiento interno en temas comerciales e industriales, y a sus notables y crecientes relaciones con otros países, entre otras características. En América Latina nos encontramos con varios países con características e iniciativas comerciales similares a las nuestras; países como Perú, Chile y México cuentan con infraestructuras de mercado de tamaño significativo y gran potencial, además de la cercanía geográfica (a excepción de México) y una gran similitud entre sus culturas, en 2011 surgió una iniciativa de integración regional para desarrollar progresivamente una libre circulación económica, de bienes, servicios, y personas. Con miras a convertirse en una plataforma política, económica y comercial a nivel mundial, enfocándose en la región Asia-Pacífico. Esta iniciativa se conoce como Alianza del Pacífico (AP) Uno de los subsectores más sensibles para los países miembros de la AP es el subsector agrícola. Debido a la baja diferenciación de productos y a la amenaza progresiva de un ingreso masivo de productos extranjeros a menor precio, pudiendo esto conseguir desestabilizar el mercado y afectando la producción interna o de los demás socios comerciales.

Surface treatment of polymers by discharge plasmas has increasingly found industrial applications due to its capability of modifying uniformly the surface without changing the material bulk properties. This work deals with surface modification of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) by a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) at atmospheric pressure. The treatments were conducted in air, nitrogen or argon plasma. The polymer surface was characterized by contact angle measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results show that the plasma treatment introduces oxygen-and nitrogen-related polar groups on the polymer surface and promotes the surface roughening. Both plasma-induced surface modifications contribute to the enhancement of the polymer wettability.

This report examines the religious beliefs and practices of American Protestant teenagers using new, nationally representative survey data from the National Study of Youth and Religion (NSYR). The NSYR is a major study of the religious and spiritual lives of contemporary American teens, which recently produced a book on its major findings entitled, Soul Searching: the Religious and Spiritual Lives of American Teenagers (by Christian Smith with Melinda Lundquist Denton, Oxford University Press, 2005). In addition to broadly describing the religious outlook of Protestant teenagers today — and as a more detailed, descriptive follow-up to that book — this report highlights several positive and negative experiences and evaluations of teenagers in different Protestant denominations and groupings of denominations. In brief, this report presents the following findings in these areas of interest: ♦ Religious Participation: Protestant teenagers are relatively active in religious organizations and activities, both within and beyond their churches. About one-half of all Protestant teens attend church weekly, participate in Sunday school or in a religious youth group, pray and attend a religious summer camp or retreat, though less than one-third read the Bible each week. This also means, however, that substantial numbers of Protestant teens are not actively participating in their religious traditions. Teens from conservative denominations such as Southern Baptist Convention and Assemblies of God are especially likely to regularly attend church and participate in other religious activities. ♦ Theological Beliefs: Protestant teenagers are likely to hold many traditional Christian religious beliefs. The majority of Protestant teens say they believe in God, the afterlife, angels, demons, miracles, judgment day and they view God as a personal being involved in the lives of people today. Sizable numbers of Protestant teens, on the other hand, do not hold these traditional Christian religious beliefs. Teens from conservative and black Protestant denominations are more likely than mainline Protestant teens to hold these religious beliefs. ♦ Importance of Faith: The majority of Protestant teenagers report that their religious faith is very important in their lives. Most of them also say that their families talk about religion together, that they have shared their faith with someone not of their faith and that they have had a powerful worship experience. A large minority of all Protestant teenagers, and in the case of some denominations a majority of teenagers, do not report that religious faith is very important in their lives. Teens from conservative and black Protestant denominations are particularly likely to report that faith is important in their lives. ♦ Evaluations of Churches: The majority of Protestant teenagers express relatively positive views of their churches and fellow church members. They typically report that they would continue to attend church if it were totally up to them, that they would attend a similar church if given the choice and that their current church is generally warm and welcoming. Protestant adolescents, however, do have some reservations about and problems with their churches and fellow church attendees, as spelled out in the following pages, particularly with other teenage attendees.
