We prospectively investigated the potential of positron emission tomography (PET) using the somatostatin receptor (SSTR) analogue ⁶⁸Ga-DOTATATE and 2-deoxy-2[¹⁸F]fluoro-D-glucose (¹⁸F-FDG) in diffuse parenchymal lung disease (DPLD). Twenty-six patients (mean age 68.9 ± 11.0 years) with DPLD were recruited for ⁶⁸Ga-DOTATATE and ¹⁸F-FDG combined PET/high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) studies. Ten patients had idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), 12 patients had nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP), and 4 patients had other forms of DPLD. Using PET, the pulmonary tracer uptake (maximum standardized uptake value [SUV(max)]) was calculated. The distribution of PET tracer was compared to the distribution of lung parenchymal changes on HRCT. All patients demonstrated increased pulmonary PET signal with ⁶⁸Ga-DOTATATE and ¹⁸F-FDG. The distribution of parenchymal uptake was similar, with both tracers corresponding to the distribution of HRCT changes. The mean SUV(max) was 2.2 ± 0.7 for ⁶⁸Ga-DOTATATE and 2.8 ± 1.0 (t-test, p  =  .018) for ¹⁸F-FDG. The mean ⁶⁸Ga-DOTATATE SUV(max) in IPF patients was 2.5 ± 0.9, whereas it was 2.0 ± 0.7 (p  =  .235) in NSIP patients. The correlation between ⁶⁸Ga-DOTATATE SUV(max) and gas transfer (transfer factor of the lung for carbon monoxide [TLCO]) was r  =  -.34 (p  =  .127) and r  =  -.49 (p  =  .028) between ¹⁸F-FDG SUV(max) and TLCO. We provide noninvasive in vivo evidence in humans showing that SSTRs may be detected in the lungs of patients with DPLD in a similar distribution to sites of increased uptake of ¹⁸F-FDG on PET.

‘The Father of Canadian Transportation’ is a term commonly associated with William Hamilton Merritt. Although he is most known for being one of the driving forces behind the building of the first Welland Canal, he was many things throughout his life; a soldier, merchant, promoter, entrepreneur and politician to name a few. Born on July 3, 1793 at Bedford, Westchester County, N.Y. to Thomas Merritt and Mary Hamilton, Merritt’s family relocated to Canada shortly after in 1796. The move came after Merritt’s father petitioned John Graves Simcoe for land in Upper Canada after serving under him in the Queen’s Rangers during the American Revolution. The family quickly settled into their life at Twelve Mile Creek in St. Catharines. Merritt’s father became sheriff of Lincoln County in 1803 while Merritt began his education in mathematics and surveying. After some brief travel and further education Merritt returned to Lincoln County, in 1809 to help farm his father’s land and open a general store. While a farmer and merchant, Merritt turned his attention to military endeavours. A short time after being commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Lincoln militia, the War of 1812 broke out. Fulfilling his duty, Merritt fought in the Battle of Queenston Heights in October of 1812, and numerous small battles until the Battle of Lundy’s Lane in July 1814. It was here that Merritt was captured and held in Cheshire, Massachusetts until the war ended. Arriving back in the St. Catharines area upon his release, Merritt returned to being a merchant, as well as becoming a surveyor and mill owner. Some historians hypothesize that the need to draw water to his mill was how the idea of the Welland Canals was born. Beginning with a plan to connect the Welland River with the Twelve mile creek quickly developed into a connection between the Lakes Erie and Ontario. Its main purpose was to improve the St. Lawrence transportation system and provide a convenient way to transport goods without having to go through the Niagara Falls portage. The plan was set in motion in 1818, but most living in Queenston and Niagara were not happy with it as it would drive business away from them. Along with the opposition came financial and political restraints. Despite these factors Merritt pushed on and the Welland Canal Company was chartered by the Upper Canadian Assembly on January 19, 1824. The first sod was turned on November 30, 1824 almost a year after the initial chartering. Many difficulties arose during the building of the canal including financial, physical, and geographic restrictions. Despite the difficulties two schooners passed through the canal on November 30, 1829. Throughout the next four years continual work was done on the canal as it expended and was modified to better accommodate large ships. After his canal was underway Merritt took a more active role in the political arena, where he served in various positions throughout Upper Canada. In 1851, Merritt withdrew from the Executive Council for numerous reasons, one of which being that pubic interest had diverted from the canals to railways. Merritt tried his hand at other public works outside transportation and trade. He looked into building a lunatic asylum, worked on behalf of War of 1812 veterans, aided in building Brock’s monument, established schools, aided refugee slaves from the U.S. and tried to establish a National Archives among many other feats. He was described by some as having “policy too liberal – conceptions too vast – views too comprehensive to be comprehensible by all”, but he still made a great difference in the society in which he lived. The Foundation began in 1980 and carries on events like William Hamilton Merritt Day. The group has strongly supported the Welland Canals Parkway initiative and numerous other activities”. William Hamilton Merritt (1793-1862) was a soldier, merchant, and politician who was instrumental in the promotion and development of the Welland Canal. After serving with the Lincoln militia during the War of 1812, Merritt became a merchant in St. Catharines, and purchased some land on Twelve Mile Creek on which he ran a sawmill and constructed a grist mill. He initially envisioned a canal between the Welland River and Twelve Mile Creek, which evolved into a plan to link Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. This would enable goods from western Canada to be conveniently shipped to Montreal and Great Britain through the St. Lawrence, while bypassing the Niagara portage. His plan met with opposition for financial and political reasons, as well as from those along the Niagara portage whose businesses would suffer if the canal were built. Despite this opposition, the Welland Canal Company was chartered by the Upper Canadian assembly in January, 1824. Construction on the canal began later that year, and was completed in 1829.

The Hamilton-Waterloo problem asks for a 2-factorisation of K-v in which r of the 2-factors consist of cycles of lengths a(1), a(2),..., a(1) and the remaining s 2-factors consist of cycles of lengths b(1), b(2),..., b(u) (where necessarily Sigma(i)(=1)(t) a(i) = Sigma(j)(=1)(u) b(j) = v). In thus paper we consider the Hamilton-Waterloo problem in the case a(i) = m, 1 less than or equal to i less than or equal to t and b(j) = n, 1 less than or equal to j less than or equal to u. We obtain some general constructions, and apply these to obtain results for (m, n) is an element of {(4, 6)1(4, 8), (4, 16), (8, 16), (3, 5), (3, 15), (5, 15)}.

OBJETIVO: Determinar os pontos de melhor sensibilidade e especificidade do Inventário de Depressão de Beck (BDI) e da Escala de Avaliação de Depressão de Hamilton (HAM-D) no diagnóstico de depressão associada à epilepsia. MÉTODOS: Setenta e três pacientes de um centro de referência no tratamento da epilepsia foram submetidos à avaliação neuropsiquiátrica. Foram colhidos dados clínicos e sociodemográficos, sendo utilizados os seguintes instrumentos: entrevista clínica estruturada (MINI-PLUS) para diagnóstico psiquiátrico conforme o DSM-IV, HAM-D e BDI. RESULTADOS: No momento da entrevista, 27,4% dos pacientes estavam deprimidos e 37% preenchiam critérios para diagnóstico de depressão maior ao longo da vida. A análise da curva ROC indicou que o ponto de corte em 16 (> 16) para o BDI (sensibilidade de 94,4%, especificidade de 90,6%) e em 16 (> 16) para a HAM-D (sensibilidade de 95%, especificidade de 75,5%) representou dicotomização ótima entre deprimidos e não deprimidos. Ambos os instrumentos apresentaram um valor preditivo negativo superior a 95%. CONCLUSÃO: A frequência de depressão maior é elevada em pacientes com epilepsia. BDI e a HAM-D podem auxiliar o clínico na identificação da depressão associada à epilepsia, diminuindo seu subdiagnóstico.

Objetivo Investigar as características psicométricas de uma versão traduzida da escala, propondo uma Versão Revisada que atenda aos critérios de adaptação transcultural para o contexto brasileiro. Métodos Este estudo incluiu 231 sujeitos – deprimidos (45,5%), bipolares (7,8%) e saudáveis (46,7%) – que participaram de uma pesquisa epidemiológica no sul do Brasil. A avaliação de transtornos mentais foi realizada por meio da Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID) e uma versão traduzida da Escala de Avaliação de Depressão de Hamilton (HAM-D), que habitualmente vem sendo utilizada no país sem estudos de adaptação. Resultados Identificou-se o ponto de corte (9 pontos) para discriminar a presença ou não de sintomas de depressão pela análise da curva ROC, resultando em uma sensibilidade e especificidade de 90 e 91%, respectivamente. A validade interna foi investigada pela análise fatorial e consistência dos itens. Dos 17 itens originais, apenas o item que avalia a “consciência do transtorno” não apresentou carga fatorial satisfatória para avaliar depressão geral e foi eliminado; os 16 restantes agruparam-se em cinco dimensões, denominadas: Humor deprimido, Anorexia, Insônia, Somatização e Ansiedade, as quais, com exceção da última, mostraram homogeneidade nos seus construtos (coeficientes alfa entre 0,66 e 0,78). Na análise de conteúdo dos itens, cinco especialistas sugeriram alterações redacionais em sete itens. Conclusão O estudo determina um ponto de corte diferente do original e evidencia características psicométricas favoráveis para a utilização da escala no Brasil.
